The park is an important refuge for birds in the metropolitan area but is losing species through habitat disturbance. Understanding the way in which birds are related to their habitat helps to understand the effect of habitat disturbance on the bird community. Mark-recapture sampling and radiotelemetry were used to investigate populations of the eastern cottonmouth, Agkistrodon p. piscivorus, in both natural and anthropogenic marsh habitats at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (BBNWR), Virginia Beach, Virginia from autumn 1995 to late spring 1998. Mark-recapture subjects were captured, marked by ventral scale-clipping, and released back into the population. A modified Schnabel Census estimator was used to estimate population sizes and corresponding densities in both marsh systems based on a total of 244 captures of 222 individuals. A new subterranean amphipod species, Bogidiella (Medigidiella) arista, found in the mesopsam mic ground waters of southern Anatolia, Turkey, is described, together with Bogidiella (Bogidiella) calicali Karaman, the latter being recorded for the first time in the eastern Mediterranean. A cladistic analysis of 37 Mediterranean species of the family Bogidiellidae is performed, using 4 species from the Canary Islands as an outgroup. Alternatively, 2 cladistic software packages, PAUP 3.1.1 and HENNIG86, are employed to calculate consensus trees of minimal length. Hibernation pattern and changes in the body weight of juvenile and adult dormice, Glis glis orientalis, kept in uncontrolled conditions were investigated. It was determined that G.g.orientalis entered hibernation on October 28 when its body weight was 180 g and the ambient temperature was below 18 ºC, which seems to be the critical temperature for entering hibernation. Although body weight has an important role in entering hibernation at the beginning of the hibernation season, dormice hibernated as the hibernation season progressed regardless of their body weight. Adult dormice arose from hibernation during the period of May 13 to June 6. …

In this study, the early development of barbel ( Barbus barbus L.) larvae has been determined by measuring their wet weight, dry weight, whole body mineral content (Ca, Mg, Na and K), skeletal development and gill development. It has been observed that wet weight, whole body mineral contents, the number of lamellae per filament of gill and the number of calcified vertebrae of larvae during early development stage increased by age, whereas dry weight decreased. Specimens of the Oligochaeta species to be used as bioindicators of organic pollution were collected from Ankara Stream between April 1991 and November 1992. These species have been interpreted together with physico-chemical and the most important ecological parameters of the sampling point and evaluated to be used in biomonitoring.

A New Subspecies Of Meriones Tristrami Thomas, 1892 (Rodentia:Gerbillinae) From Kilis (Southeastern Turkey):Meriones Tristrami Kilisensis Subsp. N., Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak

In this study, seventeen specimens of Meriones tristrami from Kilis were compared with the specimens of Meriones tristrami bodenheimeri along with topotypes of Meriones tristrami lycaon close to those from Kilis. It was determined that the specimens from Kilis were distinguishable from M.t. lycaon by characters such as dorsal coloration, Tx100 / HB (ratio of tail length to head and body), zygomatic breadth, occipitonasal length, basal length, diastema length, occipital width, weight, baculum shape and fundamental number of chromosomes. Thus, the specimens of M. tristrami from Kilis were determined to be a new subspecies, Meriones tristrami kilisensis subps. n.

The young of Allactaga williamsi and Allactaga euphratica were born at an average weigth of 2.51 and 2.74 g., respectively. Litter size ranged from 3 to 6 with an average of 4.8 in A. williamsi, and it changed from 4 to 8 with an average of 4.8 in A. euphratica , A. williamsi breeds during the period of March to August, A. williamsi and A. euphratica produced 2 and 2 or 3 litters per year, respectively. Specimens collected from Veliköprüsü in Thrace (European Turkey), Akçaalan (Abant, Bolu), Akkus, (Ordu), and Meryemana (Trabzon), which is the type locality of M. majori, were examined according to morphological, external, cranial, bacular, phallic and karyological characters. Specimens from Thrace were included in Microtus subterraneus. Populations of M. subterraneus in Thrace karyologically differ from those in Anatolia, the former having 2n = 52 chromosomes, NFa = 56, NF =60, and the latter 2n = 54 chromosomes, NFa = 56, NF = 60. In this study, blood-serum proteins of 22 adult (11 MM , 11 VV ) Chalcides ocellatus (ocelated skink) specimens collected from various localities in Southern Anatolia are investigated qualitatively and quantitatively by means of polyacrylamide disc electrophoresis and densitometry. The species' serum protein electropherograms and protein distribution patterns are established for the first time.

Survival And Growth Of Corophium Volutator In Organically Enrichedsediment: A Comparison Of Laboratory And Field Experiments, Levent Bat, Dave Raffaelli

In this study, the amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) was evaluated as test organisms for use in sediment toxicity tests by adapting standard protocols for conducting 10-day and 28-day sediment toxicity tests. Combine laboratory and field bioas-says showed that Corophium can survive in organically enriched sediment if they have no alternative, suggesting that Corophium is relatively tolerant of organically enriched sediment. Neither were there effects on emergence or reburying behaviour. Therefore this bioassay is considered inappropriate for estimating the quality of organically enricment sediment.

In Euryglossa orientalis,sexual maturity was separated into seven stages. Size at sexual maturity was observed at 182 mm TL in males and 178 mm TL in females. A male-female ratio of 1.00:1.60 was determined (0.385:0.615). This species has two spawning seasons in Pakistani waters. The ist spawning season starts in September and the second in February. Fecundity ranged from 9922 to 83891 with a mean value of 36361.

Abstract.—We investigated distribution and dispersal patterns of subadult and adult Colorado squawfish Ptychocheilus lucius (recently renamed the Colorado pikeminnow) throughout their range in the upper Colorado River. Annual, river-wide, capture–recapture data were used to document movements during a 5-year period (1991–1995). Average total length of Colorado squawfish progressively increased upstream: juveniles and subadults occurred almost exclusively in the lowermost 105 km of the 298-km study area, whereas most adults were concentrated in the uppermost 98 km. Recent records along with a synopsis of the known bats of Jordan are given. Twenty-four species of bats are reported from Jordan, including two additional records, Rhinolophus mehelyi and Asellia tridens. Five other bat species are suspected to occur.

This study is a taxonomical evaluation of 146 specimens of Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) collected in Turkey between 1974 and 1994. Turkish Myotis myotis were compared with records from the Palaearctic Region. It was determined that both Myotis myotis myotis and Myotis myotis macrocephalicus are distributed in Turkey. The diagnostic characters, habitat, pelage colour, external and cranial measurements and distribution of each taxon were recorded.

Contribution To The Taxonomy, Distribution And Karyology Of Martes Foina(Erxleben, 1777) (Mammalia: Carnivora) In Turkey, Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak, Mustafa Sözen, Şakir Özkurt

In this preliminary study, nine Stone Martens were recorded from different localities in Turkey. Their morphological characteristics were found to be consistent with previously published papers. However, the throat patches of Turkish Stone Martens show variations with respect to shape. In addition, it was determined that the morphologic and biometric characteristics of Turkish samples were consistent with those of M. f. syriaca. According to the karyological findings, the diploid number of chromosomes and the fundamental number were 38 and 76, respectively.

Mugil so-iuyis a freshwater fish living in Amu Darya River Basin, Far East Asia. It was first introduced to the area around the Sea of Azov for fish farming but, then migrated to the Black Sea, and from there to the Sea of Marmara. The present study is the first report from the Aegean Sea. Morphometrical and meristic characteristics of the two specimens caught are described.

In this study, the growth properties of tench ( Tinca tincaL., 1758) in the Kesikköprü Dam Lake between April 1995 and March 1996 were studied. In the specimens examined, ages ranged from I-VI in both sexes. The population was 51.43% female and 48.57% male. The fork length and weight in ranged from 16.1 to 41.4 cm and from 85 to 1350 g, respectively, and in males from 15.8 to 40.3 cm and from 83 to 1127 g, respectively. This report describes the determination of the toxicity of two pesticides, neem formulation (RB-a+PBO+Tx-100) and fenpropathrin, on Alphitobius diaperinus adults. The mortalities caused by the two compounds were found to be 70% for a 117.8\mug/cm 2 dose of neem formulation, and 88% for a 1.96 \mug/cm 2 dose of synthetic pyrethroid, fenpropathrin (Danitol). The LD 50 value of Danitol was found to be 0.2749 \mug/cm 2 , and that of neem formulation was found to be 58.92 \mug/cm 2 . In this study carbon-length regression was established for Arctodiaptomus bacilliferand length-weight relationships were established for Diaphanosoma lacustris, Keratella quadrata and Filinia longiseta, which are abundant in Lake Mogan. Great individual variation was determined in the carbon and nitrogen contents of Arctodiaptomus bacillifer, Furthermore, the length-weight regressions varied greatly for the, other zooplanktonic organisms according to sampling dates and, for some, to sampling points.

The parasite fauna in cetaceans from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the larger Caribbean region is poorly known. We provide the first records for parasite biodiversity among a diverse assemblage of cetaceans from the Caribbean Sea. Internal and external parasites and commensals were collected from stranded whales and dolphins salvaged in Puerto Rico, the United States and British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and Venezuela between 1989 and 1997. A total of 47 individuals of 16 species of whales and dolphins (15 odontocetes and one mysticete) were examined. West Wallabi Island in the Houtman Abrolhos, Western Australia, provides significant breeding habitat for the largest colony of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, Puffinus pacificus, in the Eastern Indian Ocean. The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) surveyed the Island in 1992 and estimated the population to be in excess of 1,117,000 pairs of breeding birds. The elemental composition of fish otoliths may represent a permanent record of the environmental conditions an individual has experienced as trace elements, incorporated into the growing surface of the otolith, reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the ambient water. We tested the utility of trace element signatures in otoliths as natural tags of the river of origin of juvenile American shad (Alosa sapidissima) collected from the Connecticut, Hudson and Delaware Rivers in August and October 1994. The larval chondrocranium and visceral skeleton of Dendrobates auratus ls described and compared with those of other dendrobatids. Four characters, i.e. lack of fusion between orbital cartilages and otic capsules, wide processus muscularis palatoquadrati, lack of processus pseudopterygoideus, and lack of processus anterolateralis hyalis, represent derived conditions for Dendrobates within Dendrobatidae. Cranial and postcranial ossification sequences are reported for D. auratus and Epipedobates tricolor. Skeletogenesis is earlier in E. tricolor, but the overall pattern of ossification is similar in the two species.
