The effects of fat, raw pork skin and added water on the color, yield, texture and palatability of fresh pork sausage were investigated. Fresh pork sausage was produced to contain 8 percent and 20 percent fat, 10 percent or 20 percent pork skin and zero percent or 10 percent added water. Three controls were produced at 8 percent, 20 percent and 35 percent fat with no added pork skin or water. Sausage with added pork skins had increased pH values. The 8 percent fat sausage and sausage without added water had the greatest cook yields, while the addition of pork …

Managing the environmental risk associated with livestock production is a significant challenge. The degree of imbalance between the amount of nutrient input and nutrient output for a livestock operation provides insight into the underlying causes of nutrient-related environmental challenges. A nitrogen and phosphorus balance was constructed for 33 Nebraska livestock operations (including 17 swine operations). On most farms, substantially more nitrogen entered the farm (through purchased feed, fertilizer, etc) than left it in the form of animals, crops and manure sold. A trial was conducted to determine the effects of genetic line and gilt development diet regimen and the interaction of these factors on the timely attainment of puberty in gilts. Genetic line was an important factor on the probability of gilts attaining puberty by 8.5 months. Results also indicated leaner gilts (as measured by backfat adjusted to 240 lb) had a lower probability of reaching puberty by 8.5 months than fatter gilts. Gilt development diet regimen and the interaction between genetic line and diet regimen were not significant effects on the attainment of puberty by 8.5 months of age. These …

In this study, growth performance data from finishing pigs indicate the response of barrows and gilts to dietary protein concentration was maximized with a 15 percent protein corn-soybean meal diet. Review of the response of plasma urea concentration to dietary protein intake indicated that, in this study, the protein requirement of barrows was between 12 and 15 percent and the protein requirement for gilts was between 15 and 18 percent. Based on the many findings in the literature documenting that protein requirements ( percent of the diet) of gilts are greater than those of barrows, we believe the use of …

A previous research summary indicated sows fed high-fiber diets during gestation weaned an average of .3 more pigs/litter than sows fed lower-fiber, grain-based diets. Gestation diets containing 45 percent wheat midds, 20 percent soybean hulls, 25 percent alfalfa meal, 30 percent sugar beet pulp or 40 percent oats provide similar amounts of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), which should be sufficient to increase litter size weaned by .3 pigs per litter. An economic analysis suggests feeding a diet containing these sources of NDF would increase sow feed ingredient costs from 0 to $3.30/ sow/period (110 days) compared to feeding a corn-soybean …

The patterns of follicular development during the proestrous period were compared in gilts selected for an index of high ovulation rate and high prenatal survival (White Line-2, WL-2) and randomly selected controls (White Line-1, WL-1) on days 0, 2, 3, 4, 5 and estrus after induced luteolysis with PGF2on day 13 (day 0) of the estrous cycle. The effectiveness of twice daily (2x) versus once daily (1x) boar exposure (BE) and the possible interaction of frequency of BE and type of BE (physical, PBE, versus fence-line, FBE) for stimulating earlier puberty in gilts was evaluated. Gilts (n=120) from the R-LS line of the gene pool herd at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were, within litter, assigned randomly to two frequencies of BE (1x versus 2x per day) and two types of BE (PBE versus FBE) plus one additional treatment where gilts were maintained in continuous fence-line contact with boars (CFBE). For several years now, the Canadian Federal government’s Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy has provided a means for substantial co-management of fisheries resources by First Nations. Unfortunately, there is a widespread lack of understanding of the Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy (AFS) by all interested parties. This study examines the AF S agreement of the Tahltan First Nation of Northwestern British Columbia and other fisheries co-management agreements in place in B.C. It does so by comparing them with the provisions and process of development of comprehensive claim based co- management agreements elsewhere in Canada. One of the primary obstacles to understanding why some oyster populations are successful and others are not is the complex interaction of environmental variables with oyster physiology and with such population variables as the rates of recruitment and juvenile mortality. A numerical model is useful in investigating how population structure originates out of this complexity. We have monitored a suite of environmental conditions over an environmental gradient to document the importance of short time-scale variations in such variables as food supply, turbidity, and salinity. A Study On The Long-Eared Hedgehog, Hemiechinus Auritus(Gmelin, 1770)(Mammalia: Insectivora) In Turkey, Ercüment Çolak, Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Mustafa Sözen, Şakir Özkurt

Thirteen specimens of Hemiechinus auritus collected in Turkey were examined for external, cranial, karyological and phallic characteristics along with postnatal development. The karyotype of H. auritus has 2n = 48 chromosomes, NFa = 92 and NF = 96. The X chromosome is a large metacentric and the Y chromosome is the smallest metacentric. There are two rows of spines on the dorsal of the glans penis. The pups were born with an average weight of 6.74 g, and they opened their eyes and ears 20 days after birth. Weaning took place on day 31.

Concentrations of cadmium, lead, copper, chromium and nickel were determined in the gill, liver and muscle of Cyprinus carpio, Barbus capito and Chondrostoma regium caught at 5 stations on the Seyhan river system. Heavy metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations, and one station thought to be contaminated by hospital effluents showed particularly high metal concentration. Liver and gill tissues showed higher metal concentrations than muscle tissue. The ranges of mean metal concentrations (µg/g d.w.) were as follows: the range of cadmium concentration was 1.26-6.10, 0.96-4.72 and 0.51- 1.67, that of lead was 9.41-44.75, 5.22-37.15 and …

Few ornithological observations are available from the isolated massifs of the Central Plateau; and for Karadag, Konya province there exists only the records of Ramsay (1914) in the summer of 1907. Observations from a visit in June 1996 are pre-sented and compared with those of Ramsay and data from other sources, principally Roselaar (1995). The total number of bird species recorded on the mountain is 53, of which 18 have been proven to breed; it seems probable that the globally threatened White-tailed Eagle formerly bred in the study area.

Trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of weaning calves at 150, 210 and 270 days of age (i.e. August, October and December, respectively). A total of 75 Angus x MARC II heifers calves were used in this study. Heifers were bled on the day of weaning and again at 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after weaning. Blood was analyzed for differential WBC, cortisol, T3 and glucose. Weight changes were recorded. Twenty-one pastures (three pastures/ treatment) were used in a two-year study to determine the effects of summer grazing on winter diet quality of Sandhills range. Summer grazing treatments consisted of no summer grazing (control) and June or July grazing at three stocking rates. After summer grazing, pastures were then diet sampled using esophageally fistulated cows in November, January and March following summer treatments. Year and sampling date had a significant effect on CP and IVDMD of winter range diets, whereas summer grazing treatments did not have a large impact.

Heifers experienced either a: 1) large magnitude of change in progesterone; 2) medium magnitude of change in progesterone; or 3) small magnitude of change in progesterone. During the 24 hours following the progesterone shift, heifers with the large magnitude progesterone shift had a greater LH pulse frequency than heifers with a medium or small magnitude of shift in progesterone. Despite the large or medium magnitude progesterone shift, LH pulse frequency did not differ from heifers in which a small change in progesterone occurred. We conclude that amount of progesterone in circulation is more important in regulation of LH secretion than …

A grazing trial was conducted in the winter of 1996-97 to compare the feeding value of soybean stubble to that of cornstalks. Irrigated bean residues were stocked at 0.5 animals/acre, while irrigated corn residues were stocked at 1.2 animals/acre. Calves grazing cornstalks gained (0.17 lb/day) faster (P = .003) than calves consuming soybean stubble (-0.03 lb/day). In addition, calves grazing cornstalks remained in fields 14 days longer. Diet samples were collected on both corn and soybean residues. Ruminally fistulated steer calves grazing bean stubble consumed diets high in crude protein (12- 25%), but low in organic matter digestibility (40-46%). Calves …

Finishing diets containing wet corn gluten feed were fed to 128 yearling steers to evaluate inclusion of lime filtrate as the source of supplemental calcium. Lime filtrate supplied 0, 50, 100 and 150% of the base calcium level of .70%, with limestone supplying the remainder. While dry matter intake was reduced for the 100% level of calcium from lime filtrate (P<.10), average daily gain and feed efficiency were not different from the limestone control. The 150% level of calcium from lime filtrate did reduce average daily gain and feed efficiency (P<.10).

A balance between the nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs balance was constructed for 16 Nebraska feedlots to provide insight to potential environmental risks. Substantial nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances were observed for many participating feedlots. Size of the livestock operation and the degree of integration of livestock with a cropping operations provided only limited explanation concerning nutrient balance variations observed among the feedlots. Substantially improved nutrient balances were achieved by those feedlots marketing manure nutrients to off-farm customers. A “sustainable” nutrient balance appears possible for larger feedlots actively marketing manure nutrients.

Four experiments including vegetative and dormant forages tested modifications of the in situ neutral detergent fiber nitrogen (NDFN) method of estimating forage undegraded intake protein (UIP). Experiments 1, 2 and 3 tested bag size, closure, rinsing, density, and reflux conditions. None of the modifications affected in situ NDFN content. Experiment 4 compared rates of in situ NDFN digestion calculated with or without correction for undegradability. A close relationship exists between rates calculated by the two methods. Modifications make the improved in situ NDFN method a more desirable means of estimating forage UIP than the standard method.

Including cull dry edible beans into diets for steer calves in two yearly trials produced slightly different results. In the first year, calculated net energy levels were higher in diets with 5 or 10% dry beans and daily gains were equal or better than for the no-bean diets. In the second year, with equal net energy values in rations containing 0, 7.5 or 15% dry beans, daily gains and feed intake decreased linearly with dry bean additions. Feed efficiency was improved as bean level increased.

Forty-one wildlife ponds were monitored between 1988 and 1992 for breeding use by wood frogs (Rana sylvatica). Data were collected on egg deposition and pond characteristics. Breeding activity and characteristics were similar to that reported in other portions of the range of the wood frog. We also monitored 15 newly-constructed ponds to determine chronological breeding patterns. Data collected for each site indicated a significant increase (P< 0.05) in the number of egg masses deposited in ponds as they age from 1-3 years during our study period. Increased chronological use of newly-constructed ponds may be due to localized population increase resulting from greater availability of breeding habitat

Reported reduced sportfish densities in the main channel of the Ouachita River prompted an investigation, beginning in 1990, into potential causes of ongoing impairment to aquatic biota. In-stream monitoring that incorporated toxicity testing of sediments and water was conducted to discern potential sources of contaminants that might be related to the suboptimal fishery populations. Organisms selected to evaluate chronic impairment included larval fish, clams, midges and water fleas. The fathead minnow {Pimephales promelas) and cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia dubid) were used to estimate patterns of toxicity associated with water from seven designated reaches and selected tributaries of the Ouachita River. Ozark big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii ingens) foraging activities were studied during 1995 in Marion County, Arkansas. Adult bats were equipped with radiotransmitters and tracked during June and July. Foraging activities were generally within 1 kilometer (km) of the roost cave. Male bats ranged farther than females with the exception of one female that flew 2.5 km into a different watershed. Male big-eared bats and northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) were also found within the maternity colony.

In late 1994, Gilbert's Potoroo was rediscovered almost 120 years after it was believed to have become extinct. It was found at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, near Albany, Western Australia. Since then, it has become urgent that detailed studies of the potoroo's behaviour and ecology be undertaken, so as to increase the understanding of the needs of 'this critically endangered marsupial. Due to its critical status, increasing the number of animals is of paramount importance to the continued survival of this species.
