Industry Professionals’ Perceptions Of Crisis Communications Educational Needs For New Professionals And Best Practices For Second Life© Simulations, Kristin M. Pennington, Leslie D. Edgar
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Crises impacting agriculture cost the nation billions of dollars in expenses and lost revenues annually. Organizations and governmental agencies continue to refocus energies on improving crisis communication plans in an effort to lessen economic impacts of unanticipated events. This study brought together an advisory team of agricultural communications professionals to gather perceptions of crisis communications educational needs for new professionals and to identify the best practices for using Second Life© (SL), a 3-D virtual world, simulations for training. Advisory team members represented the human, crop, animal, and environmental sectors of the agricultural industry. Perceptions were gathered during a roundtable, open-ended …

Economic Contribution Of The Agricultural Sector To The Arkansas Economy In 2007 And Revised Estimates For 2006, Nathan Kemper, Jennie Popp, Wayne Miller
AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
This report is the fourth in a series of reports examining agriculture’s economic contribution on the Arkansas economy. Utilizing data from the United States Bureau of Economic Analysis, USDA Economics Research Service, USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, and Minnesota IMPLAN Group, Inc., the economic contribution of agriculture on the Arkansas economy was estimated for the most recent year available, 2007. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by State information for Arkansas was compared with those of other states in the southeast U.S. to give a measure of the relative importance of agriculture in Arkansas. The total economic contribution of agriculture (direct, indirect, …
Evaluation Of Best Management Practices To Reduce Nutrients Runoff In Watersheds In Arkansas, Hector German Rodriguez Diaz
Evaluation Of Best Management Practices To Reduce Nutrients Runoff In Watersheds In Arkansas, Hector German Rodriguez Diaz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are many non point sources (NPS) of pollution issues across the state of Arkansas. Each region of the state has different concerns. Many watersheds have been included in the Arkansas's 2008 303(d) list for NPS impairments with sediment and nutrients being the primary causes of concern. This research hypothesized that there are no cost or net returns risks when adopting best management practices (BMPs) to control nutrients runoff and that selection, timing, placement and cost have no impact on the implementation of BMPs. Using two priority watersheds, the L'Anguille River and the Lincoln Lake, as examples, the environmental benefits …

History Of Development And Characterization Of The U.S. Blackberry Market, Thais F. Carvalho, John R. Clark, Michael R. Thomsen
History Of Development And Characterization Of The U.S. Blackberry Market, Thais F. Carvalho, John R. Clark, Michael R. Thomsen
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
The fresh blackberry market within the United States has expanded significantly in the past 10 years based on the development of new cultivars with improved firmness and longer shelf life, permitting their shipment over long distances. Currently, blackberries maintain a nearly continuous presence on the shelves of grocery stores across the U.S., which was uncommon a decade ago. Increased consumption of blackberries is due to increased consumer desire for improved nutrition and diet along with expanded availability. Worldwide, producers have increased production with a 45% increase in area planted from 1995 to 2005. Further expansion has occurred since then. This …

A Meating Of The Minds: Possible Pitfalls And Benefits Of Certified Organic Livestock Production And The Prodigious Potential Of Brazil, Adam Schlosser
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Certified organic food represents the fastest growing segment of food production in both the United States and throughout the entire world. This article examines the issues and opportunities facing both large and small-scale farmers who wish to engage in organic livestock production. Organic regulations cover everything involved in production, starting with the organic certification process and concluding with slaughter and the subsequent shipping and sale of the end organic product. The final section of this article addresses the unique ability of Brazil - described alternatively as "the world's warehouse" and the "world's [future] source of food" - to increase the …

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
This publication is for anyone who has ever considered entering the wine industry. The goal of this publication is to provide information about requirements and procedures for starting a winery. It is not a “how-to” manual but rather is designed to serve as a starting point to investigate the many aspects of owning and operating a winery. Although the manuscript frequently refers to procedures for starting a winery in Arkansas, the concepts presented are applicable throughout the U.S. Detailed economic information on starting a winery is covered in a companion publication. Both publications are part of a project supported by …
An Acreage Response Model For Arkansas Rice Farms, J. Grant Ballard, Michael R. Thomsen
An Acreage Response Model For Arkansas Rice Farms, J. Grant Ballard, Michael R. Thomsen
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
In recent years, market forces have signaled a strong demand for rice as well as other Arkansas crops. However, high fuel, fertilizer, and chemical costs have negatively impacted farm income, and these input costs are widely known to impact planting decisions of farmers. The goal of this study is to develop and estimate an acreage response model for rice. The model is used to compute acreage response elasticities and provides insight into roles that input costs and crop prices play in acreage decisions made by producers. Economic theory predicts that prices for important inputs such as fuels and fertilizers as …
The Effect Of Austrian Winter-Pea Cover Crop And Cow-Pea Companion Crop On Corn Yield, Matthew Marsh, David Longer, Vaughn Skinner
The Effect Of Austrian Winter-Pea Cover Crop And Cow-Pea Companion Crop On Corn Yield, Matthew Marsh, David Longer, Vaughn Skinner
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Leguminous cover crops have the potential to combat the rising input cost of commercial nitrogen (N) fertilizers. This experiment examines benefits of implementing a leguminous cover and/or companion crop into a corn production system. Legumes biologically fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, adding to the nitrogen content of the soil. In this experiment Austrian winter peas (Pisum arvense) (AWP) were used as the leguminous cover crop and cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) were used as the companion crop. A two year experiment was carried out in which winter peas were planted on half the field in the fall and allowed to grow until …

The Changing Structure Of Arkansas' Economy: A Shift-Share Analysis, Biswaranjan Das, Daniel V. Rainey
AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
The state of Arkansas enjoys the advantages of its unique central location in the nation, excellent natural surroundings, low cost of living, and one of the best business climates in the southern United States. It is home to several of the largest corporations in the world. Over the period 1980-2000, there was tremendous growth in the state’s economy. However, the growth was confined to specific regions that led to several socio-economic issues adversely affecting the state. To better understand the components and variations in economic growth, a county-wise shift-share analysis was conducted. Employment, a good indicator of economic growth, was …
