Effect Of Crop Residue On Soil Water Content And Yield Of Sprinkler-Irrigated Corn, Simon Van Donk, Derrel Martin, Suat Irmak, Steven Melvin, James Petersen
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Competition for water is becoming more intense in many parts of the USA, including west-central Nebraska. It is believed that reduced tillage with increased crop residue conserves water, but the magnitude of water savings is not clear. In 2007, a study was initiated on the effect of residue on soil water content and crop yield at North Platte, Nebraska. The experiment was conducted on a set of plots planted to field corn (Zea mays). There were two treatments: residue-covered soil and bare soil. Bare-soil plots were created by using a dethatcher and subsequent hand-raking, removing most of the …

Determination Of Crop Water Stress Index For Irrigation Scheduling Of Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Yeşi̇m Erdem, Sezen Şehi̇rali̇, Tolga Erdem, Di̇nçer Kenar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the canopy-air temperature differential and the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), which can be used to quantify the crop water stress index (CWSI) under fully irrigated (100%) and maximum water stress (0%) conditions of trickle irrigated bean. The effects of 5 irrigation levels (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 0% replenishment of soil water depleted when 50% of available soil moisture was consumed in the 0.60 m soil profile depth of fully irrigated treatment) on seed yields and resulting CWSIs calculated using the empirical approach were also investigated. The highest yield and water …

Comparison Of Different Irrigation Methods Based On The Parametric Evaluation Approach, Orhan Dengi̇z
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The main objective of this research is to compare two different irrigation methods according to parametric evaluation system in the Field Plants Central Research Institute-Ikizce Research Farm's soils located in southern Ankara. Soil properties of the study area including texture, depth, EC, drainage, carbonate content and slope were derived from a detailed soil map scaled 1/5000. After analyzing and evaluating soil properties using geographic information system techniques, gravity and drop irrigation suitability maps were generated. Results showed that 13.1% of the study area was highly suitable for surface and gravity irrigation methods, whereas 51.2% of the study area was highly …

Weather adjustments to an automatic irrigation system can conserve A LOT of water.
A system applying 1 inch of water to an average size lawn (approximately 5,000 square feet) that has already received sufficient rain wastes over 3,000 gallons of water -- a year's supply of drinking water for 17 people.
Turfgrass Water Use In Utah, Robert W. Hill, Kelly L. Kopp
Turfgrass Water Use In Utah, Robert W. Hill, Kelly L. Kopp
All Current Publications
The goal of turfgrass irrigation is to maintain quality by replacing water lost to the atmosphere from the soil by evaporation, and from leaf surfaces by transpiration. The combination of evaporation and transpiration is referred to as evapotranspiration (Et), or simply water use.

G02-1465 Crop Water Use In Western Nebraska, C. Dean Yonts
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Whether your water originates from the ground or the river, water for irrigation is becoming limited due to diminishing supplies and increasing environmental needs. In many areas of the Nebraska Panhandle, groundwater levels are dropping due to over development of the aquifers. In river valleys, water shortages occur during periods of drought.
This NebGuide provides information on average weekly crop water use values for the major crops grown in western Nebraska. The information is best used for planning decisions before the season begins or for long term irrigation system planning.

Nf02-505 Drinking Water: Chloramines Waters Disinfection In Omaha Metropolitan Utilities District, Sharon Skipton, Bruce I. Dvorak
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Bacteria and other disease-causing organisms in drinking water can cause intestinal infections, dysentery, and a variety of other illnesses. Water disinfection reduces disease-causing organisms and prevents the transmission of disease. This publication discusses the disinfection process used by Metropolitan Utilities District and how it will change in 2002.

Irrigation Scheduling Of Drip-Irrigated Tomatoes Using Class A Pan Evaporation, Öner Çeti̇n, Osman Yildirim, Demet Uygan, Hasan Boyaci
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was carried out to investigate the irrigation schedule of drip-irrigated tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Dual Large, F 1) using Class A pan evaporation. Tomatoes plants were grown in a clay soil in the experimental fields of the Research Institute of Rural Services in Eskişehir between 1998 and 2000. Irrigation water was applied as a certain ratio of Class A pan evaporation (k_{pc} = 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25) with different irrigation intervals (2, 4, and 6 days). Significant differences in fruit yields were obtained between the treatments, except for in 1998. Maximum marketable fruit yield was found at …
Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger
Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebFact addresses how to deal with an inadequate supply of forage for range beef cattle because of drought. Precipitation can be below average for much of the Nebraska Panhandle and adjoining areas for prolonged periods. Prolonged drought results in an inadequate supply of forage for hundreds of thousands of beef cattle on millions of acres of rangeland. While some variation occurs among ranches and among pastures within a given ranch, all rangeland vegetation in arid environments like western Nebraska can be moderately to severely damaged by drought stress and/or excessive grazing. Consequently, even if soil moisture is not limited …
