Potatoes harvested from home gardens and in commercial early-producing fields in the Midwest are an important low-cost source of ascorbic acid from late June into September. The major portion of the early commercial crop in Nebraska (harvested mostly in August) is produced with irrigation. Straw or litter mulching is a well established practice in the nonirrigated garden and farm potato patches. The value of these cultural methods for increasing yield is well known, but prior to this study little was known about their influence on the ascorbic acid content of the tubers, or about the persistence of any such influence …

"The Valley Gravity Project Plan has been formulated to furnish an adequate and dependable irrigation water supply for fertile and productive area in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, It would also provide drainage works, which would remove the threat of destruction of the economy of the area due to effects of a high water table and salt accumulations. The project works would permit generation of the maximum practicable amount of electrical energy which otherwise would be required to operate irrigation pumping plants. Other incidental benefits include fish and wildlife conservation, recreation and flood control."

Scottsbluff Pinto is the name of a new variety of pinto field bean being released this year by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. The new bean variety is a selection from a cross between Great Northern and the common pinto bean. In a bean-breeding program conducted for the past several years by the Department of Plant Pathology, attempts have been made to obtain improved varieties of both field and garden beans for Nebraska. Their influence on the agricultural development of the state is well known, but their relation to water supply in general is not so well understood.
