Fragments containing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal rDNA were amplified from Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica, M. arenaria and M. hapla by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Only digestion of the ITS region with the enzyme RsaI significantly distinguished M. hapla from other species, while other enzymes, EcoRI and BamHI, were not effective in distinguishing these nematode species. PCR was also done with mitocondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers for species discrimination. The obtained amplification product of 600 bp was digested with HinfI restriction endonuclease allowing discrimination among the four root-knot species. mtDNA was found to be a useful tool for discriminating between …

Induction Of Phytoalexin Accumulation In Broad Bean (Vicia Faba L.) Cotyledons Following Treatments With Biotic And Abiotic Elicitors, Soner Soylu, Mark H. Bennett, John W. Mansfield
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Broad bean (Vicia faba) cotyledons that were inoculated artificially with fungal pathogens or exposed to various abiotic agents were analysed for phytoalexin production. Biotic elicitors, such as Botrytis cinerea and B. allii, and abiotic elicitors, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation (254 nm) and freezing-thawing, were used to induce phytoalexin accumulation. Wyerone and other wyerone derivatives were the major phytoalexins responding in broad bean cotyledons. The quantities of wyerone within elicitor-treated tissues were examined by thin layer chromatography. The highest amount of wyerone was induced by B. cinerea (943 \mug/g fresh weight). Treatment of cotyledons with UV radiation (452 \mug/g f.wt), …

The Effect Of Wheat Straw, Corn Straw And Tobacco Residues On Denitrification Losses In A Field Planted With Wheat, Ali̇ Coşkan, Mustafa Gök, Işik Onaç, İlker İnal, Turan Sağlamti̇mur
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different organic residues (OR) (e.g., wheat straw corn straw and tobacco residues) on nitrogen mineralization and denitrification loss (N_2O-N) using application rates recommended to local farmers. Nitrate and ammonium analyses were carried out on periodically collected soil samples. In-situ denitrification loss was determined using the acetylene inhibition technique (AIT). The results revealed that OR application increased N mineralization significantly. In the favorable conditions for nitrification and intensive mineralization period, NO_3^--N accumulation at 0-60 cm depth peaked at 163.0, 177.7 and 226.6 kg N ha^{-1} in plots with wheat straw, corn …

An Evaluation Of Physically Based And Empirically Determined Evapotranspiration Models For Nursery Plants, Hali̇l Kirnak, R. C. Hansen, H. M. Keener, Ted Henry Short
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
A lysimeter study was conducted to determine the evapotranspiration (ET) rates of Red Sunset red maple (Acer Rubrum 'Red Sunset') nursery trees under outdoor conditions in August and September 1997. The average ET rate was 0.084 mm day^{-1}. This measured ET rate was compared with calculated ET rates based on four physical ET (i.e., Penman, Penman-Monteith, Stanghellini and Fynn) and two empirically determined ET models (vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and solar radiation based empirical ET models). The Penman-Monteith and Penman models overestimated the measured ET rate by 15% and 31%, respectively while the Stanghellini and Fynn models underestimated the measured …
Determination Of Relationships Between Various Aerodynamics, Physio-Mechanical And Fiber Properties In Cotton, Mustafa Bülent Coşkun
Determination Of Relationships Between Various Aerodynamics, Physio-Mechanical And Fiber Properties In Cotton, Mustafa Bülent Coşkun
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The relationships between aerodynamic properties such as vacuum pressure and suction speed and the fiber and physio-mechanical properties of cotton during harvesting were determined by using the Nazilli 84 cotton variety. Aerodynamic properties such as vacuum pressure and suction speed and physio-mechanical properties such as wet and dry lock masses, lock moisture, number of seeds per lock, carpel openness, carpel depth, carpel angle and force of lock break-off were measured. In addition fiber length, fiber strength, fiber elongation and fiber fineness were determined. The statistical relationships between the aerodynamic, physio-mechanical and fiber properties were also determined. It was observed that …

A Game Theoretic Analysis Of U.S. Rice Exports Under Alternative Japanese And South Korean Policy Scenarios, Dae-Seob Lee
A Game Theoretic Analysis Of U.S. Rice Exports Under Alternative Japanese And South Korean Policy Scenarios, Dae-Seob Lee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As a result of the Uruguay Round (UR), the impact on the international rice market is profound. In addition, another round of the WTO trade negotiations has started and the impacts of potential policy changes on rice trade are unknown. The major U.S. benefit of the UR has been the access to the Japanese market. However, the U.S. share of this import market has been unstable and the share of Korean rice market is zero percent. Therefore, this study attempts to analyze the potential implication of U.S. rice exports to Japan and Korea. The Japanese and Korean rice economies as …
Dynamic Econometric Modeling Of The U.S. Wheat Grain Market, Carlos Walter Robledo
Dynamic Econometric Modeling Of The U.S. Wheat Grain Market, Carlos Walter Robledo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Structural-time series models have not gained much ground in commodity market modeling despite the overwhelming popularity of time series approaches in forecasting and dynamic analyses. This dissertation contributes by applying developments in seasonal cointegration and structural-time series analysis (e.g., Zellner and Palm (1974); Hsiao (1997); Lee (1992); Franses and Kunst (1999); Ghysels and Osborn, 2001) to the study of agricultural commodity markets. The focus is on three research themes. The first theme investigates the role of cointegration and seasonal cointegration for market data, an issue considered timely because most applications assume deterministic seasonal components. The second issue breaks new ground …

The federal government has recently approved legislation to develop revenue insurance products that are affordable and user-friendly for livestock producers. The features of the products will be the ultimate determinant of product acceptance among producers. The objective of the study was to determine the relative importance of livestock revenue insurance product attributes as well as to identify the characteristics of beef cattle producers who prefer certain levels of a given product attribute. Conjoint analysis was utilized to determine the importance of selected attributes. Conjoint Designer was used to develop eleven hypothetical insurance products from four attributes with three levels each. …
Genetic Variation For Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Marla Dale Hall
Genetic Variation For Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Soft Red Winter Wheat, Marla Dale Hall
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Fusarium graminearum, the causative agent of Fusarium head blight, is an economically important pathogen of wheat (Triticum aestivum). Breeding Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistant wheat requires knowledge of the underlying genetic control of FHB resistance.
Two nine-parent diallel analyses were completed in greenhouse and field environments. Combining abilities, variance component ratios, and narrow sense heritabilities for FHB resistance and deoxynivalenol levels were calculated. Significant general and specific combining ability effects were observed. Resistance to FHB seems to be mostly controlled by additive genetic effects with some dominance noted in the field. Resistance noted in the greenhouse environment …

Multidemensional Goals Of Farmers In The Beef Cattle An Dairy Industries, Aydin Basarir
Multidemensional Goals Of Farmers In The Beef Cattle An Dairy Industries, Aydin Basarir
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Farm firm decision making processes have long been of concern to agricultural economists. The concept of maximizing utility rather than profit is an important concept in multidimensional goal research. The prevalence of low or negative net returns in Louisiana beef and dairy production leads to the hypothesis that goals other than profit maximization compete strongly in producers' decisions. The objective of this study is to determine the hierarchy of goals that motivate beef and dairy producers and evaluate them in a multi-dimensional framework. Seven goals were evaluated in producer decision making: Maintain and Conserve Land, Maximize Profit, Increase Farm Size, …
