The Amount Of No_{3}^{-}-N Transferred To Soil By Legumes, Forage And Seed Yield, And The Forage Quality Of Annual Legume + Triticale Mixtures, Uğur Büyükburç, Yaşar Karadağ

The forage yield and quality of hairy vetch, grasspea and triticale grown alone and as mixtures of legume + triticale were investigated in field experiments conducted in the fields of the Faculty of Agriculture of Gaziosmanpaşa University in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000. The highest dry matter (10.06 t/ha) and crude protein yields (1.56 t/ha) were obtained from the mixture including 50% Line-452 of grasspea + 50% triticale. On the other hand, the highest seed yield (5.38 t/ha) was achieved from the 50% Line-38 of grasspea + 50% triticale mixture. Effect Of Different Planting Times On Essential Oil Components Of Different Mint (Mentha Spp.) Varieties, Abdulhabi̇p Özel, Menşure Özgüven

This study was carried out to determine the effect of different planting times on the essential oil components of different mint varieties (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens, M. piperita Mitcham, M. piperita Eskişehir and M. piperita Prilubskaja). The field trials were conducted at the GAP Agricultural Research Station under Harran Plain conditions in 1993 and 1994. The mint oil components, a-pinene (0.49-1.00%), b-pinene (1.38-2.12%), 1,8-cineole (2.64-10.85%), menthone, menthofuran (28.09-49.52%), menthole (22.55-38.89%), pulegone (0.00-1.32%), menthyl acetate (0.46-6.78%) and b-caryophyllene (0.54-2.84%), were determined. The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first aim is to present briefly game theory and to illustrate the relationship between game theory and linear programming. The other aim is to apply game theory to field crops. The game theory model was used for main field crops, namely wheat, barley, maize, chickpea, sesame, cotton and groundnut, in Antalya province in Turkey. The data included time series of gross product values of the investigated crops for the period 1980-1999. The genetic similarity between Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis and other mycobacterial species has confounded the development of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis-specific diagnostic reagents. Random shotgun sequencing of the M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis genome in our laboratories has shown >98% sequence identity with Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium in some regions. However, an in silico comparison of the largest annotated M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis contigs, totaling 2,658,271 bp, with the unfinished M. avium subsp. avium genome has revealed 27 predicted M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis coding sequences that do not align with M. avium subsp. avium sequences. Acquisition of metals such as iron, copper, and zinc by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is tightly regulated. High affinity uptake systems are induced under metal-limiting conditions to maintain an adequate supply of these essential nutrients. Low affinity uptake systems function when their substrates are in greater supply. The FET4 gene encodes a low affinity iron and copper uptake transporter. FET4 expression is regulated by several environmental factors. In this report, we describe the molecular mechanisms underlying this regulation. Production Of Dissolving Grade Pulp From Poplar Wood By Ethanol-Water Process, Hüseyi̇n Kirci, Mehmet Akgül

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The possibilities of dissolving grade pulp production from poplar by an ethanol-water process were investigated. The effects of ethanol ratio, cooking temperature and acid catalyst ratio on unbleached, bleached and alkali-purified pulps were studied. It was seen that catalyst ratios exceeding 0.01% caused serious yield and viscosity losses. The results showed that with the catalyst ratio to pulping liquor exceeding 0.01%, pulp yield and viscosity were reduced to an unacceptable level. The best pulping result was obtained at 40% ethanol consistency, 180 ºC pulping temperature and 150 min reaction time without the addition of acid catalyst to the pulping liquor. …

Farm firm decision making processes have long been of concern to agricultural economists. The concept of maximizing utility rather than profit is an important concept in multidimensional goal research. The prevalence of low or negative net returns in Louisiana beef and dairy production leads to the hypothesis that goals other than profit maximization compete strongly in producers' decisions. This study was carried out in glasshouse conditions in summer 2000. Metaphase I (MI) chromosome association and numbers of chromosome arms bound were studied in autotetraploid perennial (Lolium perenne L.) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and their interspecific hybrid plants (Lolium hybridum). In addition, the relationships among different cytological characteristics with respect to meiotic regularity were determined. Chromosome associations at MI were often regular in the parent species and hybrid ryegrass plants however different pairing irregularities were found to be higher in perennial and especially in hybrid ryegrass plants than in the annual ryegrass plant genotypes. The objective of this study was to determine the most suitable saturated hydraulic conductivity (K) values as input into DRAINMOD among a range of K data sets developed for the drainage experiment site in North Central Ohio using seven different K estimation methods. The K methods evaluated were monolith, core, auger-hole, MUUF soil database, and using the Hooghoudt, Kirkham, and van Schilfgaarde equations with water table drawdown and drainage discharge data. Simulations using DRAINMOD (Version 4.6) were conducted for the years 1962-1964 and 1967-1971, and runoff and drain discharge predictions were compared with measured discharges. The objective of the work presented in this paper was to simulate drain flow into subsurface drainage pipes for a layered soil profile using a finite element based HYDRUS-2D model. Data from the drainage experiment in North Central Ohio were used as input to the model. Studies were conducted to determine the ability of the model to predict drain discharge-water table elevation relationships. The model was also used to evaluate the effect of backfill on drain discharge-water table elevation relationships. The structure of the U.S. hog industry is changing rapidly. U.S. hog farms have become smaller in number, larger in size and more specialized. This study examines the factors that influence the hog producer's choice among business arrangements offered in the U.S. hog industry. A national survey was mailed to 4,986 hog producers to determine these factors. The survey consisted of questions covering topics such as: production characteristics, autonomy, transaction costs, risk, social relationships, and demographics. The recreational use value of Kursunlu Waterfall Nature Park in the Antalya province of Turkey was studied by using the Individual Travel Cost Method (ITCM). For this purpose, 500 on-site questionnaires were administered between September 1998 and June 1999. By applying certain criteria to these questionnaires, 280 cases were selected for economic analysis. In small fruit species, like the mandarin, fruit size is lower in Turkey than in other countries and this has a negative effect on their marketing. Effects Of Pruning Treatments On The Yield And Fruit Quality Of Precoce De Tyrinthe Apricot Cultivar, Levent Son, Ali̇ Küden

This study was carried out to determine the effects of pruning on the yield, fruit quality and phenological aspects of three year-old trees of the Precoce de Tyrinthe apricot cultivar grown in Mut-Mersin. In the first experimental year, unpruned trees were found to be more productive; however, these trees gave lower yields (6.5 kg/tree) in the second year due to alternate bearing. August+winter (12.0 kg/tree), July+winter (10.4 kg/tree), and September+winter (10.1 kg/tree) pruning applications were more productive than control trees (6.50 kg/tree). This study was conducted to (i) determine the effect of tobacco waste application on the soil structure stability (SS), hydraulic conductivity (HC), bulk density, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and electrolyte concentration of alkaline soils, and (ii) observe the possibility of using tobacco waste for the reclamation of alkaline soils. The main purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the farmers' adoption behaviour in adopting land consolidation implemented in Güzelbeyli town in Zile county, Tokat province. Chi-square analysis was performed to determine whether a difference existed between the farmers who adopted and did not adopt the land consolidation. The results of the analysis indicated that there were some factors affecting the adoption of land consolidation such as farmers' social participation level and their level of awareness about land consolidation. The aim of this study was to determine some mechanical properties (compression, static bending, impact bending and shear strengths) of Eastern beech wood (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) and to compare with them other beech species. In the tests, randomly selected logs taken from the trunk 2-4 m height were obtained from trees naturally growing in Andırın (Northeastern Mediterranean region) and these logs were prepared and tested according to Turkish standards. The results showed that the mean compression strength was 606 kgcm^{-2}, static bending strength 1204 kgcm^{-2}, impact bending strength 0.85 kgmcm^{-2} and shear strength 99 kgcm^{-2}. There have been some problems reported associated with the use of alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) in alkali papermaking. Excessive use of size emulsion, poor size performance when filler used, problems with back water contamination, poor retention, and formation of pitch deposits on machinery are some of the problems experienced during papermaking operations. Comparison Of Erosion And Runoff Predicted By Wepp And Agnps Models Using A Geographic Information System, Hali̇l Kirnak

The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model and the Agricultural Non-Point-Source Pollution Model (AGNPS) were used in conjunction with a geographic information system (GIS) database to predict runoff and sediment discharges for Rock Creek watershed, an agricultural watershed in Ohio, USA. Observed and predicted values were compared for selected storm events in 1988 and 1990. The statistical evaluation of the WEPP and AGNPS models showed that WEPP predicted average runoff, peak runoff and sediment yield better than AGNPS. WEPP and AGNPS overpredicted peak runoff rates compared to observed data by 15.5% and 26.5%, respectively. The t-test showed that there was …
