Arthropod Populations And Rice Yields In Direct-Seeded And Transplanted Lowland Rice In West Africa, I. O. Oyediran, E. A. Heinrichs

Two methods for planting rice in irrigated lowland were evaluated during the wet seasons of 1994 and 1995 to determine their effect on rice arthropod numbers, insect-caused rice plant damage, and rice grain yield. The six treatments tested were: hand transplanting of seedlings at spacings of 14 cm × 14 cm, 20 cm × 20 cm, and 30 cm × 30 cm; and direct-seeding of rice at 60 kg seeds ha^–1, 90 kg seeds ha^–1, and 120 kg seeds ha^–1. The general objective of this study was that of giving food, health, and nutrition education via educational lessons based on a diagnostic of teachers' and children's knowledge at the Cuambo school. The study is descriptive and transverse and lasted from October 2000 through June 2001. The study included 100% of the attending children and teachers of the Cumabo community school, being 42 in number. Variables were: topics on eating, nutrition, and health that complete the plan of basic studies, along with training of students and teachers. The markets facing nursery producers have changed dramatically in the past decade. These changes in nursery markets have outdated previous research. New research into nursery marketing will assist nursery producers in making marketing decisions. Nursery producers can market their plants to five different marketing channels: Mass-merchandisers, garden centers, other retailers, landscapers and re-wholesalers. This study described the 1998 Louisiana nursery industry, analyzed nursery market changes over the past decade in Louisiana and the Southeast and analyzed characteristics of Louisiana and Southeastern nurseries to estimate marketing channel choice. Soy products contain isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, and glycitein)that display biological effects when ingested by humans and animals, these effects are species, dose and age dependent. Therefore, the content and quality of isoflavones in soybeans is a key to their biological effect. Our objective was to identify loci that underlie isoflavone content in soybean seeds. The study involved 100 recombinant inbred lines (RIL)fr om the cross of ‘Essex’ by ‘Forrest,’ two cultivars that contrast for isoflavone content. Isoflavone content of seeds fromeach RIL was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The distribution of isoflavone content was continuous and unimodal. The …

Field evaluation of banana plants for disease tolerance in soil infested with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense is commonly used. The process is slow as disease expression usually takes 4-5 months, while inoculum concentration, edaphic conditions, temperature and other variables that may affect disease expression are difficult to control. An alternative method of screening plantlets at the nursery stage was developed.
