Plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are being used increasingly in the construction of upholstered furniture frames. Yet there is little information available concerning the holding strength of various fasteners, and, in particular, dowels in these materials. A study was conducted accordingly, to obtain basic information about the holding strength of dowels in both plywood and oriented strand board. Results of the tests were incorporated into predictive expressions that allow designers to estimate withdrawal strength as a function of the diameter of the dowels, their depth of embedment and the density of the composite material. Comparing Cotton Evapotranspirations Estimated By Micrometeorological And Water Budget Methods, Mustafa Ünlü, Riza Kanber, Kenan Di̇ker, Pasquale Steduto
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study aimed at comparing actual water consumption of cotton obtained by the water balance method under full and limited irrigation conditions, with that estimated by a micrometeorological method (energy balance), which is being widely used nowadays. Results indicated that in the first year the total irrigation water applied was 438 mm, whereas in the second year it was 199 mm. Deep percolation losses were were 6 and 0 mm, respectively, in the first and second year of the experiment. The evapotranspirations of cotton under full irrigation condition were 496 and 629 mm for the energy balance and water budget …

This research was carried out in 1995-97, in Erzurum ecological conditions, in order to study the effects of different seeding rates (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 seeds/m^2) and cutting times (at shooting, boot, heading and flowering stages) on hay yield and quality. The effects of seeding rates on fresh and dry hay yields, crude protein content and crude protein yield were significant while P, Ca, Mg, K, and ash contents and tetany value were not significant, based on the research. Evaluation Of Yield And Yield Components In Inbred Maize Lines I. Heterosis And Line X Tester Analysis Of Combining Ability, Şevket Meti̇n Kara
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In maize, three male testers and six female lines together with their 18 F_1 hybrids were evaluated to study the general and specific combining ability estimates and heterosis following line x tester approach. Analysis of variance indicated the existence of significant variation among F_1 and parents for all characteristics. Average heterosis was significant for all characteristics studied and was positive, except for days to tasseling, with the average yield of hybrids being 79.8% above that of the parents. Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The aim of this study is to investigate the species composition and significance of beech-wood decomposing macromycetes. A total of 101 species of macromycetes were found on beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) in Azerbaijani forests. All species of xylotophic macromycetes belonged to 52 genera and 13 families of the orders Aphyllophorales, Polyporales, Agaricales and Auriculariales from the subdivision Basidiomycotina. The greatest part (79%) of xylotrophic species is represented by the order Aphyllophorales, species of Polyporales compose 10.9%, Agaricales 8.9%, and only one species belonging to the order Auriculariales. This study presents the results of a study conducted to determine stem quality and the homogeneity of stands of ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Wahl.) in natural and plantation stands in the central and western Black Sea Regions in Turkey. The results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (i) According to homogeneity index values, plantations are more homogeneous than natural ash stands, (ii) The homogeneity index values of natural ash stands and plantations are similar to the values of some even-aged stands given in the literature, (iii) There is a statistically significant difference between the stand value of plantations …

This study was conducted to determine the agricultural technical conditions and irrigation systems for obtaining high yields in wheat production. A questionnaire was prepared and applied to farmers growing wheat in Ankara, Konya and Eskişehir in 1996. After analyzing the data, we determined the water resources, the amount of water used for wheat production, the allocation of crops, and the technical and financial problems faced by farmers in the research area. Twenty-three entries of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), including eight inbred lines (five males and three females) and 15 hybrids, were evaluated to determine the proportion of γ, αII, and β-αI-kafirins and their association with contents of crude protein, fat, and starch; protein digestibility; in vitro dry matter disappearance; and seed weight. The male lines included three normal-seeded lines (TX2737, TX435, and P954063) and two large-seeded lines (Eastin1 and PL-1). Although there is growing demand for sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] with white seed and tan plant color, there is limited information on the overall agronomic fitness of sorghum with these characters. A set of experiments was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of plant color and seed color on sorghum germination, emergence, and agronomic performance. Twenty near-isogenic lines with red seed/tan plant (RT), red seed/purple plant (RP), white seed/ tan plant (WT), white seed/purple plant (WP) phenotypes were tested under field and laboratory conditions. This paper reviews characteristics and properties of aspen wood, including anatomical structure and characteristics, moisture and shrinkage properties, weight and specific gravity, mechanical properties, and processing characteristics. Uses of aspen are evaluated: sawn and veneer products, composite panels, pulp, excelsior, post and poles, animal bedding, animal food supplements, fuel applications, and novelties. Aspen is a preferred species for paneling, veneer products including matchsticks and chopsticks, waferboard and oriented strandboard (OSB), fiberboard, pulp, excelsior, research animal bedding, animal food supplements, and tourist or gift items.

This trial was conducted on the experimental fields of the Agricultural Faculty at Atatürk University in 1987-92 and five-year results were evaluated except for the first year. The effects of different row spacings (20, 30 and 40 cm), cutting stubble heights (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 cm) and stubble burning on seed yield and yield components of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) were studied. According to five-year averages, the effects of row spacings on the seed and straw yield, reproductive shoot number per m^2 and seed number and weight per spike were significant. Serving Size And Gender Effects On Product (Lemonade) Acceptance And Just-Right Attribute Ratings, Zehra Ayhan, Chen-Ta Li, Matrid K. Ndife, Q. Howard Zhang

The serving size and gender effects on product acceptance and ideal attribute (lemonade flavor, sourness and sweetness) ratings of lemonade were investigated using a 15-point hedonic scale and a 5-point just-right scale, respectively. Females (67) and males (68) consumed a 4 oz (118 ml) sample ad libitum, or a full 8 oz (236 ml) serving. Ad libitum male consumption was not different (p>0.05) from female consumption. A low correlation (R^2=0.011) was observed between the amount of lemonade consumed and product acceptability or just-right attribute ratings. Neither serving size nor gender had an effect on the overall acceptability (p>0.05). …

This research was carried out to determine the pollen quality (pollen viability and germination), quantity (pollen production) and the role of cross pollination on the fruit set in Hicaz and 33 N 26 pomegranate cultivars under Adana ecological conditions in 1997. Pollen viability levels with TTC and FDA, pollen germination level with agar in the petri method, and pollen production capacity with the hemacytometric method of these cultivars were determined in both male (A type-unfertile) and bisexual (B type-fertile) flowers. In this study, it was intended to determine the usage possibilites of some alpine plant species having high potential value as ornamental plants for landscape planning in Erzurum and environs. The investigation was conducted in 15 locations of 1750-3176 m altitudes between May 1997 and September 1998. In the study, direct plant observation methods were employed as well as floristic plant analysis. The results showed that 166 alpine plant species were found belonging 32 families and useful for landscape planning. In this research, the adaptation and ground cover properties of some plants with aesthetic and functional features, found in the natural flora of the province of Trabzon, were investigated. Nineteen different natural ground cover plants from 8 families were chosen as trial plant material. These materials, which were mostly from the alpine zone, were planted as plugs in 1994. Survival rates and plant cover area were recorded and measured at the beginning of the vegetation season, during flowering, and at the end of the vegetation season in 1995 and 1996. This study was conducted to determine of effects the cotton plant growth of different irrigation programs in a drip system. The amount of water applied was based on free surface evaporation from a screened Class-A Pan. Irrigation treatments consisted of two different irrigation intervals (I1: 5; I2: 10 days), and three plant-pan coefficients (Kcp1: 0.75; Kcp2: 0.90 and Kcp3: 1.05) and two different wetted percentages (P1: 0.70 and P2: based on cover percentage of the crop). The first consideration prior to seeding is to determine the present level of management being applied to the proposed site.
