Production of turkeys in Utah has had a rapid growth since its beginning a few decades ago. In 1929 there were only 226,000 birds sold by Utah producers and in 1960 there were 2,798,000 birds sold. Over this 31 year period of time production has increased 12 times.
Gross income received in 1960 for Utah turkeys amounted to $13,787,000 and accounted for 8.35 percent of total farm income in Utah in 1960 (2).
In addition to the income direct to turkey producers, this industry contributes to the incomes of various other industries such as processors, feed handlers, hatcheries, transportation agencies, …

Dairymen have a continuing problem in maintaining herd size. Disease, injuries, and low production, make it necessary for them to cull animals from their herds. Replacements equal to a complete herd turnover are necessary every two to six years. Consequently, many are wondering as to the most profitable practice to supply the needed replacements in the herd. Three alternatives are available: Dairymen can produce herd replacements. They can purchase either heifers or cows. They can contract with growers specializing in raising heifers to provide replacements. Since all dairy enterprises differ to some degree, each dairyman should seek a specific solution …

Since 1946, the cost of producing canning peas has been investigated on a continuing basis by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. The original comprehensive study was made in 1946. A second study was completed in 1951. The most recent study was made in 1961. In between the major studies annual costs of production have been calculated.

With the exception of corn, barley has probably been used more than any other cultivated plant in genetic studies. It was one of several plants with which Erich von Tschermak-Seysenegg was working when he discovered Mendel's paper.
Barley is excellent material for use in genetic studies. It is adapted to many environments and has a large number of contrasting characters. Large populations can be grown on a small area of land in one season. It is a diploid with seven chromosome pairs. Each of these seven chromosome pairs can be identified cytologically.

In growing alfalfa it is important to obtain a good initial stand. However, it is difficult to predict the exact amount of seed necessary to insure a good stand.
There are about 220,000 seeds in 1 pound of alfalfa seed, or enough for four to five seeds per square foot at the rate of 1 pound of seed per acre. If every seed should grow, 2 to 3 pounds of seed per acre would be sufficient for a good stand.
However, there are many hazards. Some seeds are not viable, and others are planted too deep or too shallow to …

Dairying ranked second in producing farm income in the state of Utah in 1929 (II). Twenty-two and two tenths percent of cash receipts from the sale of agricultural products came from dairying. Beef enterprises were the only larger source of farm income in the state, with 24.7 per cent of the total cash receipts. Because of the importance of dairying in the state, much work has been done to provide dairymen with information that will enable them to obtain a higher net return from dairying.

A current problem facing farmers is, how much should they mechanize their farm perations? As the relative price and productivity of factors change farmers usually have to adjust their operations to assure maximum profits. Technological advances often change the relative productiveness and the price of machinery. These changes have caused the progressive farmer to continually review his farm organization and make adjustments in levels of factor use. If he is to produce at maximum profits it is necessary that his machinery investment be in proper adjustment with other resources.

Within the boundaries of Utah are approximately 52.7 million acres of land. About 41 million acres are rangeland, of which 73 percent is federally owned and 5 percent state owned (6).1 The portion owned by the Federal government is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Forest Service. Most of this land is either arid or mountainous and has been used mainly for grazing in the past. IT has other uses, however, such as mining, forestry, recreation, and watersheds. Since the beginning of history the wool of sheep has been used by the human race. Its chief use has been and still is for clothing. Also, it is widely used for blankets, upholstery, carpets, and numerous other products.
The wool industry is important to the state of Utah, which was the sixth largest producing state in the United States in 1958. Wool growers in Utah received approximately $7,897,000 in sales proceeds and government payments for wool sold during the 1958 marketing year (12).1

Red sour cherries have been a dessert item for Americans since long before George Washington chopped down the cherry tree. In the past twenty years production of sour cherries has increased at a faster rate than population. Since 1938 population of the United States has increased approximately 43 million, a 25 percent increase, whereas sour cherry production has increased approximately 78 million pounds, a 38 percent increase. This trend is expected to continue in the future, in fact, according to a Michigan survey the production of sour cherries in relation to the population will increase more in the future.

Range land is an important resource in Utah's economy. Of 52.7 million acres of land in Utah about 78 percent is used for production of range livestock (14).1 In 1958, cash receipts of range livestock amounted to 62.7 million dollars, or 38.8 percent of Utah's total agricultural cash receipts (19).
Of total land within its boundary, the state owns 2,723,157 acres, or 5.17 percent (32). The state legislature has designated the Utah State Land Board as the responsible agency for administering this land to provide income for various state institutions.

During the last two decades, Utah's market milk industry has changed from one of local processing and distribution by small-scale plants to one of state-wide distribution by large-scale dairies. At present, four large producer cooperatives control most of the state's market milk and six large processing plants accounts for more than 80 percent of the state's fluid milk sales.
Along with centralized processing and distribution has also come some centralization of production. Statistics recently published by Utah State University show that in 1957, 56 percent of the market milk produced in the state came from the five counties of Cache, …

The widespread use of chemicals for the control of diseases, insects, and weeds in the production of alfalfa seed has caused concern with regards to what effect these materials may have on the inherent reproductive potential of the plants. It has been reported that captan (N-(trichloromethylthio)-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide) has both a morphological and physiological effect on some plants. The action of this chemical with regards to alfalfa reproduction has not been reported. Demeton (0,0-diethyl 0(and S)-2-(ethylthio) ethylphosphorodithioate) is another chemical used in alfalfa seed production for which the direct effects on reproduction have not been studied. Extensive areas of potentially productive but depleted range land in the United States are occupied by a weed commonly known aa cluster tarweed (Madia glomerata). Moat attempts at seeding these areas to useful forage plants have resulted in failure. Many of these failures have been attributed to the vigorous competitive growth of tarweed plants. More recent observations of seedings in tarweed areas and laboratory work at the University of Utah indicate that tarweed is not only a strong competitor but may also produce substances which inhibit the germination and growth of other species of plants.

In recent years the weed commonly known as dodder has become an important reason for the rejection of several alfalfa seed fields for certification in Utah. The rapid spread of infestation in alfalfa seed fields, difficulty in removing the dodder seed from the alfalfa seed due to the similarity in size, and a lack of adequate control are among the main causes for the rising concern with dodder, Dodder is an annual which reproduces from seed each year.

Dry land farming is an essential part of the economy of northern Utah. With wheat in surplus production and subsequent crop controls a serious problem has developed in the area. The State Agricultural Statistician and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee report that between thirty thousand and forty thousand acres have been taken from wheat production and are available for crops other than wheat.

The beef cattle industry in Utah is of major importance in the economy of the state. In terms of cash receipts it is the largest single agricultural enterprise. In 1957 cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves amounted to $38,405,000. This figure represents approximately 70 percent of cash receipts from the sale of all meat animals. It comprises 33 percent of cash receipts from the sale of livestock and livestock products and 24 percent of total cash receipts from farm marketings (2).

Alfalfa plays an important part in Utah's economy. It is the major forage crop and occupies approximately 40 percent of all irrigated land in the state.
During the past most of the alfalfa varietal trials have been conducted in Cache Valley, which is not representative of conditions found throughout Utah. Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) is adapted to low wet lands and survives flooding and periods of drought. Much of the valley bottom land of Utah is flooded during part of the year, yet some of this land is very dry late in the summer. This grass could become an important forage for Utah's valley bottom lands if stand establishment could be assured. Low germination percentages and long germination periods under field conditions often result in poor stands.

Importance of lamb marketings
The production and marketing of lambs is important in Utah's economy. In 1956, Utah ranked fifth in the United States in lambs produced and saved, with 1,038,000 head produced and 840,000 marketed for consumption, table 1. Cash receipts from the lamb marketings during the year amounted to over 10 million dollars, and in addition, the state's economy benefited through revenues, employment, and raw materials which were provided by the lamb industry.

Many experiments have been conducted measuring the effects of nitrogen rates, moisture, or time of application but few combined all three in one experiment. The object of this investigation is to study the effects and interactions of nitrogen fertilizer, moisture, and time of application on silage corn, grain corn, and sweet com. The effects of these factors should be shown by changes in yield and quality of the crop.

Utah is rapidly changing from what was once predominately an agricultural state to an urban and industrial state. This shift is not decreasing our water needs; it is often intensifying these needs and creating many new problems. Perhaps we should ask ourselves-are we prepared to recognize and accept these changes? Are we really facing up to the problems that are developing or are we turning our heads and hoping they will go away? These changes involve technical, legal, and sociological problems never before encountered, some of which I should like to discuss.
