Management Of The Rice Tungro Virus Vector Nephotettix Virescens (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) With Controlled-Release Formulations Of Carbofuran, R. M. Wilkins, S. Batterby, E. A. Heinrichs, G. B. Aquino, S. L. Valencia

Field trials were conducted in lowland flooded rice in the Philippines to evaluate a number of carbofuran controlled-release formulations in comparison with commercial formulations. The test formulations were based on a biodegradable matrix of pine kraft lignin and were used as granules of different sizes and also in the form of small strips. The release rates were assessed under field conditions by bioassaying rice plants in the field, using adult rice green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens Distant. The lignin formulations with a high level of active ingredient (15–45% by weight) gave as good or better control than the commercial 3% granules …

Seedling screening and survival and population growth studies on 30-day-old plants indicated similar degrees of susceptibility on Taichung Native 1 (TN1) and Triveni rice to Nilaparvata lugens (Homoptera: Dilphacidae). However, studies in the screenhouse and field indicated that at both the vegetative and mature stage, Triveni possesses tolerance to insect damage, expressed as the ability to survive and produce a higher percentage of productive tillers than TN1 at similar N. lugens populations. Yield reduction caused by feeding of N. lugens was ca. 40% when infested with 400 N. lugens on 35-, 50-, or 75-day-old plants, whereas it was almost 100% …

Stand risk rating for the southern pine beetle.

Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., is a first step toward dealing with a serious but sporadic insect problem. Two approaches, one utilizing readily available resource data, the other employing data obtained from aerial photographs, illustrate application of current knowledge to meet the protection needs of resource management-the primary role of integrated pest management. During a 36-month period in Louisiana, high-risk stands accounted for 13.4 infestations per 1,000 acres, four times the rate of low-risk stands; in Texas high-risk stands accounted for 9 .9 infestations per 1 ,000 acres during 1973-1978, almost five times the …

Thirty-five insecticides used on rice in Asia were tested in the field against Nilaparvata lugens. The most important predators of the pest, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis, Microvelia atrolineata, and predacious spiders, Lycosa pseudoannulata, Tetragnatha, and Araneus species, were also monitored in the test plots. Ten insecticides significantly reduced numbers of N. lugens, but propoxur and ethylan gave the most consistent and effective control. Most insecticides did not significantly reduce populations of spiders and M. atrolineata compared with untreated checks, but they did reduce numbers of C. lividipennis. Three rice varieties, IR29, IR40, and IR42, which are, respectively, susceptible, moderately resistant, and resistant to Nilaparvata lugens Stål in the Philippines, were treated in the field with decamethrin, an insecticide known to cause resurgence. N. lugens populations increased to a significantly higher level in the treated plots than in untreated checks, but the degree of resurgence varied among varieties. The maximum population increases in the treated plots compared with the checks were ca. 74-, 50-, and 5-fold, respectively, for IR29, IR40, and IR42. The release of an insect pest-resistant variety and subsequent adaptation of the insect species to that variety through the process of biotype selection has occurred on many cultivated crops. The present study was designed to obtain detailed information on some of the processes involved in the selection of biotypes of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) on two rice varieties with different major genes for resistance. Resurgence of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) after insecticide application is a common phenomenon in rice in South and Southeast Asia. Among other insecticides inducing resurgence, carbofuran, decamethrin, and methyl parathion were selected for this study. Of the various methods of carbofuran application tested, foliar sprays were most active in inducing resurgence. Extent of resurgence was highly influenced by time of insecticide application. Sprays of methyl parathion and decamethrin applied 50 and 65 days after transplanting (DT) induced resurgence in the third generation of N. lugens at ca. 90 DT, whereas earlier applications had little effect. Ovicidal Activity Of Insecticides Against Planthoppers On Rice, E. A. Heinrichs, S. L. Valencia

Insecticides were evaluated to determine their ovicidal activity against rice-feeding planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) and Sogatella furcifera Horvath. Carbofuran, methyl parathion, and triazophos were ovicidal as foliar sprays, and carbofuran, diazinon, metalkamate, and triazophos were ovicidal as paddy-water applications of granules in insectary studies. In a field study, only triazophos as a foliar spray provided significant ovicidal activity against N. lugens. Eggs of S. furcifera were more susceptible to insecticides than those of N. lugens. Ovicidal activity was dependent on age of egg at the time of insecticide application and on insecticide concentration.

Resurgence of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) on rice was induced by applications of decamethrin, methyl parathion, and diazinon. Differential mortality of predators and hoppers did not appear to be the primary factor for resurgence. Hoppers appeared to be attracted to methyl parathion and decamethrin treated plants because of plant growth. Improved plant growth, however, did not compensate for the increased feeding of the insecticide-treated hopper population, and plants treated with resurgence-causing insecticides succumbed to feeding injury earlier than untreated plants. A method of dissection followed by staining was initiated to allow physiological age- grading based on ovarian development in order to more completely describe the physiological development of adult female stable flies [Stomoxys calcitrans (L. )]. The gonotrophic developmental continuum from a non-differentiated cell in teneral females to mature eggs at the time of oviposition was first arbitrarily divided into six stages by using distinct landmarks within the developing oocyte . Three tests in southwestern Nebraska during 1971 and 1972 evaluated insecticides against the army cutworm. Adult alfalfa weevils did not damage new second growth alfalfa in a small plot study during a 3-year period (1973-1975) at Gothenburg, NE. However, excellent control of larval alfalfa weevils was obtained. These results indicated a need to establish economic threshold levels for the alfalfa weevil in Nebraska to prevent unnecessary use of insecticides. Four tests to control the alfalfa weevil with registered insecticides verified the efficacy of these materials under Nebraska conditions. Techniques to quantify the feeding activity of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) on rice varieties as based on honeydew excretion are described, and their potential as a bioassay for biotype identification are discussed. Honeydew, excreted on filter paper, was stained with ninhydrin and quantified by measuring the area (mm2) or by weighing. Results were satisfactory but the methods were extremely tedious. Volumetric measurement of honeydew with micropipettes was less sensitive. The color intensity of one μliter honeydew streaked on filter paper and treated with 0.001% ninhydrin was determined with a Fujiox Densitometer. The method was relatively simple and rapid …

Flowering vegetation was investigated to determine its potential as an aggregation site for the mating of screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). Fly activity was observed at vegetation on a typical south Texas shrub community. Noted were the species of vegetation present and the phenology of their flowering. Screwworm flies were found to be attracted to specific species of brush; however, in the absence of the most attractive species, the flies responded to secondary species. Both feeding and mating behavior were observed on vegetation.

Olfaction and visual mechanisms of aggregation were investigated. Results from an olfactometer showed the attractancy of some …

When sheep dipping was compulsory, lice infestations and their control could have been costing the sheep industry in Westrn Australi as much as $8 million a year.

On March 1, 1977 compulsory annual sheep dipping ended.

This raises the question of whether an owner should dip sheep.

The European wasp was detected in Western australia for the first time in January and February 1977 in the metropolitan suburbs of Mosman Park, Cottesloe and Attadale.

So far it has only been found within an area of 8 km radius from Fremantle but the outer boundries of the infestation are still uncertain.

It is Department of agriculture policy to eradicate the European wasp, if possible, and to destroy all nests detected.

Western Australian farmers now have a legal responsibility to control stored grain insects on their farms.

Ten species of insects, usually referred to collectively as 'weevils', have been 'declared' under the Agriculture and Related Resources Act.

In Western Australia, grain storage insects are not found in standing cereal crops. Thus, it should be possible to set up a clean delivery "pipeline" from the paddock to the C.B.H. bin.

The spotted alfalfa aphid which is devastating lucerne crops in the Eastern States, could be introduced to Western Australia on lucerne hay which is fed en route to imported livestock. The Department of Agriculture has therefore alerted all inspection points about the possible danger.

The Department of Agricultureis maintaining traps specifically for the aphid, and has found no evidence of it yet.

Foi conduzido um experimento a campo, na Estação Experimental Agronômica da UFRGS, em Guaíba, RS, com o objetivo de determinar o efeito de vários inseticidas no controle da “broca-do-colo,” Elasmopalpus lignosellus (Zeller, 1848). Os tratamentos aplicados foram: 2 dosagens de Carbofuran no tratamento de sementes; 2 dosagens de Carbofuran, Aldicarb e Disulfoton granulado, aplicado no sulco na época do plantio; e 2 tratamentos de Endrin de 1 e 3 pulverizações no período de pós-emergência. LEPIDOPTERA are divided into the major suborders Monotrysia and Ditrysia (Borner, 1939). The vast majority of Lepidoptera belong to the Ditrysia. The Noctuidae, which is the largest family in the order, is probably the most destructive (Metcalf, et aI., 1962). It includes Loxagrotis albicosta (Smith), the western bean cutworm, originally a pest of field beans, which has become a relatively serious pest of corn in southwestern and central Nebraska (Hagen and Roselle, 1972). Removal samples from an irrigated pasture were used as a calibration technique for the D-Vac. Plots 4 m2 were enclosed with a frame, and 1 initial and 3 removal samples were taken. Equations are given for computing the population and probability of collecting an insect. For leafhopper adults, leafhopper nymphs, Orius insidiosus (Say), and corn flea beetle, Chaetocnema pulicaria Melsheimer, calibrations (m2/linear m) were 0.405, 0.328, 0.272, and 0.490, respectively.

The main purpose of this study was to obtain information on forage yield and quality of four alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties that differed in level of resistance to potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris) yellowing, when cut at three stages of growth in the second and third cuttings in field plots, with and without insecticide application. Viruses are extremely small particles which can only be seen with an electron microscope. A virus is present in a diseased plant as huge numbers of tiny particles within the cells of the plant. Viruses which are infectious can cause disease, and reproduce only inside the cells of a living plant.

Many insects transmit plant virus diseases—aphids, leafhoppers, mealy bugs, thrips and beetles. Generally a virus is spread by only one of these groups of insects.

The Western Australian Department of Agriculture is expanding the diagnostic service for the identification of plant viruses.

ULV malathion (9.7 oz AI/acre) was applied by air to a 16 square-mile area during August of 1968, 1969, and 1970. Adult Diabrotica virgifera LeConte populations were reduced the following season by 39, 54, and 72%. No economic infestations occurred in the treated area the year following any application. Postspray migration of beetles was very limited, but adult migration during the peak emergence period the following season contributed to repopulation of the treated area. Migration and fecundity appear to be density-dependent factors which favor increases under low populations. Area suppression does not appear economically feasible, but adult control in individual …

ULV malathion (9.7 oz AI/acre) was applied to a 16 mi2 area in August 1968, 1969, and 1970 for western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera LeConte, adult control. Nontarget insects in alfalfa, also treated, were monitored. Tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), was reduced 89–98%. Survival of eggs and adult migration resulted in rapid reinfestation of the treated area in 1969 and 1970; adult migration alone was important in 1968. Alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze), was reduced 96–98%. Repopulation following the 1969 and 1970 treatments was by development from eggs surviving the treatment. The activity of TH 6040, a chitin synthesis inhibitor, was determined against velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, and other soybean defoliators in field tests in Georgia, South Carolina, and Brazil. Single applications at rates as low as 75 g AI/ha afforded adequate initial and excellent residual control of A. gemmatalis and some suppression of low populations of Plusia spp. Two applications at higher rates gave significant control of soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), and showed promise against green cloverworm, Plathypena scabra (F.), and Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Mulsant. Annual changes in corn borer populations in the North Central States were measured as a phase of a Regional Project, NC-20, entitled "Factors Influencing Corn Borer Populations" in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Ohio over a period of years. Drift Of Terrestrial Arthropods In An Irrigation Canal Following A Wide-Area Application Of Ulv Malathion, Dewey Urbauer, K. P. Pruess

Numbers of arthropods drifting in an irrigation canal were recorded at 30-min intervals during and after an upstream application of ULV malathion. Flower-visiting and parasitic Hymenoptera were the first insects to increase; a bimodal drift pattern resulted from an interruption in the spray application. Diptera exhibited a delayed response but the numbers collected, especially Paracantha culta (Wiedemann), suggest high susceptibility. Ants occurred in large numbers over a long period, but mortality was probably low. Miridae and Cicadellidae were probably more susceptible than Orthoptera and adult Odonata but had similar delayed drift patterns. Tetragnathidae were the most, and Thomiscidae the least, …
