The Biology And Ecology Of The Bromegrass Seed Midge In Nebraska, E. L. Nieman, G. R. Manglitz
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
These studies indicate that smooth bromegrass, Bromus inermis Leyss, is the only host of the bromegrass seed midge, Stenodiplosis bromicola Marikovskiy and Agafonova, in Nebraska. The midge did not infest two common annual brome species under field conditions. The midge has been collected from all counties surveyed in Nebraska and seems to be widely distributed throughout the midwestern states. An apparently undescribed species of Tetrastichus (Hymenoptera: Eulophiclae) was observed to parasitize all stages of the bromegrass seed midge. Parasitism rates greater than 90% were observed. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A description of the study area is presented indicating the ecological niches that exist in the Nebraska Panhandle. Seventy-five species of grasshoppers are listed from the 11 Panhandle counties. Twenty-one occur in the subfamily Acridinae, 29 in Oedipodinae, 24 in Cyrtacanthacridinae and 1 in Romaleinae. Ecological, taxonomic and distributional data are presented.

These investigations were undertaken to determine the distribution and importance of Trogoderma glabrum (Herbst) in stored grain in Nebraska, the ecological factors favoring population increase in stored wheat, corn, and sorghum, and the role T. glabrum might play in disseminating internally the Aspergillus molds commonly encountered in stored grain.

WITH unusually large quantities of grain likely to be stored on farms this season, 1970 will be an important year for the control of pests in stored grain.
Infested grain from farms is responsible for almost all outbreaks of infestation in bulk storages, leading to costly treatment by the grain handling authority. Effective control on the farm would eliminate most of this.

Under a conventional plowing system, eggs of Diabrotica virgifera LeConte were more uniformly deposited in the top 6 inches of the soil profile than under a reduced strip-tillage system which resulted in heaviest egg deposition in the furrow or ridge. Equal numbers of eggs were deposited in both systems. After corn was planted, more eggs occurred in the seedling zone in conventionally planted corn; in till-plant corn, eggs were removed from the seed row, and eggs concentrated in the furrow were covered with additional soil. Adult emergence was 5–10 days later in till-plant corn than in the conventional tillage system.

INSECT pests have been taking toll of mans' crops and herds since very early times and despite modern control techniques the annual loss is still very high.
It has been estimated that damage to stored grain alone may average 10 per cent, per year, or, in terms of the West Australian harvest, a loss by weevils of about twice the capacity of the large Midland Junction bin.

A long-range study of the annual changes in corn borer populations in the North Central States was started in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska in 1955 and in Missouri and Ohio in 1956. This investigation was a phase of a broader Regional Project, NC-20, entitled "Factors Influencing Corn Borer Populations" and was undertaken to measure by standardized procedures the seasonal changes in abundance of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hbn.), under cropping procedures in different locations within, the North Central States. Sources of combined resistance to spotted alfalfa and pea aphids were found in Ranger alfalfa and its parental strains, foreign plant introductions, clones and their progenies. Ranger alfalfa appeared to be a good source for selection of plants with resistance to both aphids.

Because the potential of the sweetclover aphid for damaging sweetclover is well documented, yet damage occurs only occasionally under field conditions, it would appear that natural factors which depress midsummer populations are important in preventing greater damage and worthy of detailed study. Thus, this study was begun early in 1959 to investigate the natural factors which generally keep populations of this aphid below levels causing economic damage.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a ready means of identifying bumblebees found in Nebraska. It is for both amateur and professional entomologists. Included are an annotated list of the bumblebees found in Nebraska, artificial keys for species determination, a glossary for those not acquainted with the terminology used in the keys, a list of flower preferences and biological notes pertaining to bumblebees in Nebraska. The keys for identification include a few species of bumblebees which have not yet been collected in Nebraska but which may occur in the state.

Populations of the army cutworm, Chorizagrotis auxiliaris (Grote), tended to be higher in winter barley than winter wheat planted side by side in the same field. Highest populations occurred in barley within 30 feet of the adjoining wheat. Distribution of larvae in linear 1-foot samples agreed closely with the Poisson. Practical application of these results are discussed.

INTEREST in the agricultural potential of the Kimberley region in Western Australia dates from its early exploration and settlement in the last century.
Several farming development schemes were considered for the area, but were never implemented.
This could be mainly attributable to lack of knowledge of agricultural potentialities, limitations of the local environment and ways of exploiting the local environment.
Up to the present the economy of the region is almost entirely based upon the extensive production of beef and to a lesser extent, wool.

Rainfall and populations of the clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Marsham), were artificially controlled in pots of red clover grown under shelters in the field. Populations of clover root borer were higher under dry conditions. Although yield losses were high in borer-infested pots, yield reductions were no greater under dry than under wet conditions.

Oviposition by the clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Marsham), is completed earlier in weakened than in vigorous plants, but development is more rapid in vigorous or lightly infested roots. High populations occurring early in the season result in plant mortality with subsequently slowed borer development.

Weaver & Haynes (1955) described a method of placement of insecticides in bands under red clover seed that achieved control of the clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Marsh.). Band placement was as effective at 0.75 pound of toxicant per acre as broadcast treatments at 1 pound or more as reported by Gyrisco et al. (1954) and App & Everly (1950). Since the 1951–53 tests were carried out in one location on small plots and applied by a farm crew experienced in experimental procedures, it was desired to test the band placement method more extensively. FOR many years, the losses from blowfly strike on the crutch and tail areas imposed a tremendous economic burden on the Merino sheep industry in Australia. Today, the modified Mules operation and the tail-strip treatment have provided a convincing answer to this menace. Breech wrinkles encourage strike, and although as a long-term policy, efforts are being made to eliminate wrinkles by breeding for plainness of breech, it is of the utmost importance to give the sheep IMMEDIATE protection by the most effective methods available.
