Laboratory and field tests were conducted to determine the effects of different food plants on fecundity, adult longevity and larval development of the tuber flea beetle, Epitrix tuberis Gentner. All food plants tested were those upon which the overwintered beetles commonly feed in the spring following emergence from hibernation.

Field and laboratory tests conducted in Nebraska showed DDT to be more effective than any other material yet tested against potato insect pests. Records were obtained on tuber flea beetles, Epitrix tuberis, potato psyllids, Paratrioza cockerelli, potato leafhoppers, Empoasca fabae, green peach aphids, Myzus persicae, Lygus elisus, Chlamydatus associatus, Aceratagallia uhleri and Macrosteles divisus. DDT remained effective against potato psyllids and potato leafhoppers under field conditions for a relatively long period of time. Populations of certain beneficial insects, such as Nabis spp., Orius spp. and lady beetles were found to be significantly reduced …

A survey of mosquitoes in Nebraska was conducted by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station during 1942 and 1943. The object of the study was to determine the species, relative abundance, seasonal occurrence, and principal breeding places of mosquitoes in representative areas of the state. This report presents the results of the survey, and, in addition, some records and observations made in Nebraska by other workers during and previous to initiation of the project.

Warfare against destructive insects is not ended when grain has been placed in the bin. Here it is subject to attack by stored-grain pests which reduce its weight, feeding quality, and value for seed. These losses become especially serious when large stocks of grain are held for extended periods on farms and in warehouses. This circular describes methods available for handling and storage that will prevent or suppress infestations before they reach serious proportions.

The chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus (Say), is one of the most injurious insect pests of cereal crops in the United States. Although some damage by it has occurred over a wide area in the United States, the greatest injury has been in the Corn Belt. The years in which the chinch bug appears in destructive abundance come irregularly in cycles of varying duration, and the length of these cycles is largely controlled by the direct or indirect effects of weather upon the bugs. At the close of 1939 about twice the amount of wheat was in storage in Nebraska as compared to the close of 1938. Frequently a new crop of grain goes into storage before the preceding older grain leaves the farm, and, due to inadequate storage space, the crops are not kept separated, thus promoting an early infestation of the new grain from the older grain that has become infested. Under such conditions the damage by stored grain pests becomes a matter of unusual importance.

Summary and Conclusions
Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown. Recent investigations by the writer have shown that the flour beetle, Tenebroides nana, and the sand hopper, Orchestia platensis, collected from poultry farms in the Territory of Hawaii have been found naturally infested with the infective larvae of the poultry gizzard-worm, Cheilospirura hamulosa. It is probable that more than one insect species are capable of spreading some of the potato virus diseases. This conclusion was also indicated by repeated observations in the dry-land section of western Nebraska. While aphids are abundant and are probably the chief vectors of potato virus diseases in the more humid sections of the country, they are usually scarce in the western upland plains area and are not present in large enough numbers to account for the rapid spread of spindle tuber and unmottled curly dwarf which sometimes occurs. On May 8, 1911, Mr. Smith Riley, the District Forester, with headquarters at Denver, in a letter to Acting Supervisor Pierce at Halsey, requested that the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station take up energetically the investigation of the pine tipmoth in the Nebraska National Forest. This request being presented to the Department by Mr. Pierce later in the month resulted in the presentation of the problem to the Experiment Station Council as a proposed Station project. During the last half century there have been five separated and well-marked chinch bug outbreaks, or periods of serious damage, in Nebraska, and we are now approaching the climax of a sixth such period. As to just how serious this present outbreak will be in 1925 no one can now say, because no one can exactly forecast the weather conditions of the summer, but the present situation is sufficiently menacing to make advisable the issuing of this circular, which aims to give the essential information concerning the chinch bug as a Nebraska pest, and the locally applicable means of control.

The last three crops of winter wheat, and especially the crop of 1922-23, have been seriously injured in southwestern Nebraska and especially on the dry land farms of Cheyenne, Kimball, Banner, Morrill, Garden, Deuel , Keith, Perkins, and Hitchcock Counties, by an abundance of hard-bodied, cylindrical, shining waxy yellow, soil-infesting larvae. These greatly resemble wireworms and are often mistaken for them, but they differ conspicuously in being more active and having well-developed, club-shaped antennae, long and stout front legs, and a less flattened body with a distinctly upturned tip. This pest is sometimes called in error the "Red Spider" or the 'Earth Flea."
It is neither a spider nor a flea, being a species of mite.
It belongs to the family of mites known as the Eupodidae and to the Genus Notophallus. Many of the members of this family are predaceous, that is, they live upon other insects or animals, but the species we are dealing with appears to be wholly a plant feeder. Although "corn is king" in Nebraska, our crops of small grains are not insignificant. The insect enemies of wheat, oats, barley, and rye therefore demand our attention nearly or quite as much as do those which attack corn. Accordingly, during the past year much time has been given to the study of this class of insect pests.
