Real and apparent conflicts between ecosystem and human needs for fresh water are contributing to the emergence of an alternative model for conducting river science around the world. The core of this new paradigm emphasizes the need to forge new partnerships between scientists and other stakeholders where shared ecological goals and river visions are developed, and the need for new experimental approaches to advance scientific understanding at the scales relevant to whole-river management. We identify four key elements required to make this model succeed: existing and planned water projects represent opportunities to conduct ecosystem-scale experiments through controlled river flow manipulations; …

Prevalence Of Overweight In Preschool Children And The Association With Dietary And Lifestyle Factors, Anthony H. Ng
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past several decades, there has been a steady increase in obesity in the United States. National surveys indicate that 64% of American adults are overweight or obese and more than 1 0% of preschool children are overweight. This study determined the prevalence of overweight in a group of preschool children aged between three and five years at a Head Start Center and evaluated the relationship of specific lifestyle factors between caregivers and their children and the relationship of these patterns to the development of overweight. The caregivers were asked to complete a questionnaire, which assessed specific dietary and …

Lipopolysaccharide Induced Septicemia In Chronic Morphine Treated Rats, Frank Ocasio
Lipopolysaccharide Induced Septicemia In Chronic Morphine Treated Rats, Frank Ocasio
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Opiate-addicts have been known to show increased susceptibility to bacterial infection. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is a cell wall component in gram-negative bacterial, is a potent stimulator of inflammation. We investigated how treatment with morphine alters LPS-induced inflammatory responses in the rat. Chronic morphine exposure alone elevated serum endotoxin levels. Animals treated with morphine and LPS (250 µglkg) developed hypothermia, decreased mean arterial pressure (MAP), increased plasma thrombin anti-thrombin III (TAT) complex, and approximately 67% exhibited progressive intramicrovascular coagulation. Morphine also enhanced LPS induced leukocyte endothelial adhesion (LEA), suppressed leukocyte flux and corticosterone production, and elevated interleukin- I, tumor necrotic factor-a, …

Sustainable Agricultural Growth In The Al-Ahsa Oasis Of Saudi Arabia: Harmonizing Wto Goals, Environmental Constraints, And National Food Security Issues, Ahmad Mohammad Al-Mass
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Local agricultural practices in Saudi Arabia today are shaped by local land, labor, and technological conditions, by national governmental regulations, subsidies, and price controls, and by the global impacts of foreign competition and goals of international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO). Human and natural forces over which local oasis residents have no control exert more influence upon their social and economic life than do daily agricultural tasks. These forces are recognized by Saudi national planners, for agricultural development is very important to the government and to oasis dwellers in Saudi Arabia. Reducing the loss of foreign exchange, …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2002-03, Bruce Johnson, Glenn A. Helmers
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports
For the year ending February 1, 2003, Nebraska's agricultural land values showed a slight over-all increase of just over 1 percent; but with considerable variation across the State and by type of land. Based on UNL's 2003 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey, sub-state regional all-land changes ranged from a 6.6 percent decline in the Southwest to gains of 4.6 percent for the 12-month period in the Cental and East. The relative severity of the prolonged drought during 2002 appears to be a contributing factor to these regional value patterns. Similarly, drought impacts resulted in considerable variations in value changes …

We used immunofluorescence techniques to determine the localization of nucleoside diphosphate (NDP) kinase in NIH-3T3 fibroblasts. We found that cytoplasmic NDP kinase can be separated into two populations according to subcellular localization and response to extracellular stimuli. Specifically, within minutes of stimulation of resting fibroblasts with serum, growth factors or bombesin, a portion of NDP kinase becomes associated with membrane ruffles and lamellipodia. Another pool of NDP kinase accumulates independently of stimulation around intracellular vesicles. Transfection of cells with activated Rac mimics, whereas expression of dominant negative Rac inhibits, the effects of extracellular stimulation on the translocation of NDP kinase …

Boltzmann Machine Learning With The Latent Maximum Entropy Principle, Shaojun Wang, Dale Schuurmans, Fuchun Peng, Yunxin Zhao
Kno.e.sis Publications
We present a new statistical learning paradigm for Boltzmann machines based on a new inference principle we have proposed: the latent maximum entropy principle (LME). LME is different both from Jaynes maximum entropy principle and from standard maximum likelihood estimation. We demonstrate the LME principle BY deriving new algorithms for Boltzmann machine parameter estimation, and show how robust and fast new variant of the EM algorithm can be developed. Our experiments show that estimation based on LME generally yields better results than maximum likelihood estimation, particularly when inferring hidden units from small amounts of data.

Field Observations Of Intraspecific Agonistic Behavior Of Two Crayfish Species, Orconectes Rusticus And Orconectes Virilis, In Different Habitats, Daniel A. Bergman, Paul A. Moore
Peer Reviewed Articles
Agonistic behavior is a fundamental aspect of ecological theories on resource acquisition and sexual selection.
Crustaceans are exemplary models for agonistic behavior within the laboratory, but agonistic behavior in natural habitats is often neglected. Laboratory studies do not achieve the same ecological realism as field studies. In an attempt to connect laboratory results to field data and investigate how habitat structure affects agonistic interactions, the nocturnal behavior of two crayfish species was observed by scuba diving and snorkeling in two northern Michigan lakes. Intraspecific agonistic interactions were analyzed in three habitats: two food resources—macrophytes and detritus—and one sheltered habitat. The …

Overproduction And Analysis Of Eukaryotic Multiprotein Complexes In Escherichia Coli Using A Dual-Vector Strategy, Jeff Finkelstein, Edwin Antony, Manju M. Hingorani, Michael O’Donnell
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Biochemical studies of eukaryotic proteins are often constrained by low availability of these typically large, multicomponent protein complexes in pure form. Escherichia coli is a commonly used host for large-scale protein production; however, its utility for eukaryotic protein production is limited because of problems associated with transcription, translation, and proper folding of proteins. Here we describe the development and testing of pLANT, a vector that addresses many of these problems simultaneously. The pLANT vector contains a T7 promoter-controlled expression unit, a p15A origin of replication, and genes for rare transfer RNAs and kanamycin resistance. Thus, the pLANT vector can be …

Diverse Sequences Within Tlr Elements Target Programmed Dna Elimination In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Jeffrey D. Wuitschick, Kathleen M. Karrer
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Tlr elements are a novel family of ~30 putative mobile genetic elements that are confined to the germ line micronuclear genome in Tetrahymena thermophila. Thousands of diverse germ line-limited sequences, including the Tlr elements, are specifically eliminated from the differentiating somatic macronucleus. Macronucleusretained sequences flanking deleted regions are known to contain cis-acting signals that delineate elimination boundaries. It is unclear whether sequences within deleted DNA also play a regulatory role in the elimination process. In the current study, an in vivo DNA rearrangement assay was used to identify internal sequences required in cis for the elimination of Tlr elements. Multiple, …

Fall Calving In The Intermountain West, Dale R. Zobell, Craig Burrell, Darrell Rothlisberger, Eleanor Jenson
All Current Publications
Fall calving has been practiced by beef producers for many years, although in small numbers relative to spring calving. The spring calf crop has been a traditional event for most beef producers and probably will continue to be. There are distinct advantages, however, to fall calving which producers could take advantage of. The potential for higher conception and weaning rates, price premiums and the elimination of calf scours are among the reasons some beef producers have switched from spring calving their herd to fall calving.

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Arkansas is the leading rice producing state in the U .S .. representing almost 46% of the total U .S. production and almost 47% of the total acres planted to rice . Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, due to changing political, environmental, and economic times, the practices arc dynamic. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor how the changing times reflect the changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county Extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas that produce rice. Questions …

Prey Nutritional Quality Interacts With Chemical Defenses To Affect Consumer Feeding And Fitness, Edwin Cruz-Rivera, Mark E. Hay
Faculty Publications
Numerous studies have assessed the individual effects of prey nutritional quality or chemical defenses on consumer feeding behavior. However, little is known about how these traits interact to affect consumer feeding and performance. We tested the separate and interactive effects of prey chemical defenses and nutritional quality on the feeding behavior and fitness of six sympatric crustacean mesograzers. Natural concentrations of diterpene alcohols (dictyols) from the brown alga Dictyota menstrualis were incorporated, or not incorporated, into lower quality and higher quality foods to create artificial diets mimicking prey of variable value and defense. Five amphipods (Ampithoe longimana, A. valida, Cymadusa …
