Are Biotech Crops And Conventional Crops Like Products? An Analysis Under Gatt, Julian Wong
Are Biotech Crops And Conventional Crops Like Products? An Analysis Under Gatt, Julian Wong
Duke Law & Technology Review
The transatlantic debate over the use of genetically modified organisms ("GMO"s) as food products, with the US as a proponent on one side, and the European Union ("EU") as an opponent on the other, is set to take center stage. The US has initiated formal legal action under the World Trade Organization Dispute Settlement System, charging that the EU violates several agreements of international trade law, including Article III of GATT, an anti-protectionist measure which forbids a country from favoring its own products over imported "like products." The US claims that GMOs and conventional crops are "like products,, and that …
Predicting Fish Species Diversity In Lotic Freshwaters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes
Predicting Fish Species Diversity In Lotic Freshwaters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes
Virginia Journal of Science
Objectives were to test the hypothesis that stream order and stream width alone account for species diversity in drainages of Greece, and to create a mathematical model that predicts fish diversity in small and medium sized freshwater streams in the southern Balkan Peninsula in accord with the stream classification system proposed by the European Environmental Agency (EEA). Thirty-seven species of fishes in 12 families (Petromyzontidae, Anguillidae, Cyprinidae, Moronidae, Centrarchidae, and Blenniidae) were collected in five stream orders (1-5) from 19 river drainages in Greece in 1993 and from 2000-2002. Numbers of species were significantly correlated with stream order (+), width …
Identification Key To Fishes In Fresh Waters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Panos S. Economidis
Identification Key To Fishes In Fresh Waters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Panos S. Economidis
Virginia Journal of Science
The European Environmental Agency formulated a biodiversity initiative in 1996 specifying a freshwater stream-monitoring program to inventory, identify and describe aquatic and terrestrial species in European Union countries. With one of the richest freshwater ichthyofaunas in Europe (126 fish taxa: 97 species and 29 subspecies of primary or secondary freshwater fishes), Greece has two extinct fish species, five listed as critically endangered, and 29 considered endangered and/or vulnerable. There are, however, no published identification guides that are available for identifying fish specimens from fresh waters in Greece. We present an English translation of the only available identification key (in Greek) …

Creating A Geographical Information System For Freshwater Crabs And Fishes In Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Walter R.T. Witschey, Panos S. Economidis, Dimitra Bobori
Virginia Journal of Science
A geographical information system (GIS) for freshwater crabs and fishes in Greece was created in response to the European Environmental Agency's (EEA) biodiversity initiative for European Union countries. A total of 1931 collections, made with seines, dipnets, and backpack electroshockers in 32 drainages of Greece, yielded 126 species of fishes and crabs in 2,359 data records including species, latitude, longitude, drainage, prefecture, and locality, 731 also include stream order, elevation, gradient, stream width and depth, pH, temperature, and distance to river mouth. Our GIS indicates current distributions of species, species rich and poor areas, anomalous species distributions, areas warranting further …
Hatch–Waxman Reform And Accelerated Market Entry Of Generic Drugs: Is Faster Necessarily Better?, Sarah E. Eurek
Hatch–Waxman Reform And Accelerated Market Entry Of Generic Drugs: Is Faster Necessarily Better?, Sarah E. Eurek
Duke Law & Technology Review
Recently there has been a considerable amount of pressure to accelerate consumer access to generic drugs, which are significantly less expensive than their brand-name counterparts. One way to bring generic drugs on to the market sooner is through revision of the existing law relating to pharmaceutical patents. This iBrief describes recent regulatory changes to the Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act (the Hatch-Waxman Act), which governs the patenting process for new drug products, as well as current legislative efforts to speed generic access through Hatch-Waxman reform. This iBrief also assesses whether these changes will be beneficial to consumers …

Characterization Of Various Wheat Starch In Pasta Development, Wen-Chieh Sung, Martha Stone
Characterization Of Various Wheat Starch In Pasta Development, Wen-Chieh Sung, Martha Stone
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Determination of pasta cooking quality was more dependent on a continuous protein network than the physicochemical properties of gelatinized starch. In the absence of coagulated protein, “starch pasta” strands fractured into small pieces and did not swell in contrast to pasta made from flour or semolina after 20 minutes cooking. The starch of semolina was not a key factor related to better cooking quality of pasta compared to starches of hard wheat, but the starch of soft wheat might down grade the cooking quality of pasta. The results of this experiment showed that surfactants, monoglyceride and sodium stearoyl lactylate, did …
Reviving Informed Consent: Using Risk Perception In Clinical Trials, Dana Ziker
Reviving Informed Consent: Using Risk Perception In Clinical Trials, Dana Ziker
Duke Law & Technology Review
The current doctrine of informed consent falls far short of its potential to serve as a valuable safeguard for human research subjects. Instead of providing a channel of communication between physician and subject, informed consent is a lifeless entity responsible for a large portion of the misunderstanding existing between these parties. Acknowledging risk perception principles may help transform the informed consent process into an effective communication of health risks.

Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Of Avhrr Sea Surface Temperature Patterns In Taiwan Strait, Ming-An Lee, Ching-Dong Yeah, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Jui-Wen Chan, Kuo-Tien Lee
Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Of Avhrr Sea Surface Temperature Patterns In Taiwan Strait, Ming-An Lee, Ching-Dong Yeah, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Jui-Wen Chan, Kuo-Tien Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was used to study a time-series of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imageries from the waters of Taiwan Strait to examine the temporal and spatial characteristics and to determine the dominant pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) variability for 72 months from January 1996 to December 2001. The spatial variance was consistent with a quasi-permanent front at the Chang-Yuen Ridge in winter and associated with strong temperature contrast to the Kuroshio branch or the South China Sea Warm Current. It also displayed a cool water plume extending from the Peng-Hu Islands to Formosa …

The Case For National Dna Identification Cards, Ben Quarmby
The Case For National Dna Identification Cards, Ben Quarmby
Duke Law & Technology Review
Foes of the United States have demonstrated their ability to strike at the heart of this country. Fear of renewed attacks and a desire for greater national security have now prompted many to call for improvements in the national personal identification system. In particular, the possibility of a national identification card containing the carrier's DNA information is being seriously considered. However, this raises difficult questions. Would such a card system, and the extraction of individuals' DNA it entails, violate the 4th Amendment of the Constitution? This article will show that such a card system could in fact be found to …
