Activity Of Papain On Gelatin Mixtures, Edward J. Ruschmann

Bachelors’ Theses

Within the Marquette chemical laboratories under the direction and supervision of Dr. John R. Koch, professor and head of the Chemistry Department, many noteworthy advances in enzyme chemistry have been achieved. A new type all glass, single unit viscometer was developed and perfected by Koch and now is the basis of the study of enzyme activity by viscometric methods. The use of this viscometer is not limited solely to work in these laboratories but has also been used with great success in bating and brewing.

The Germination Of Weed Seeds As Influenced By Environmental Factors, Edna Pauline Mertz Jul 1941

The Germination Of Weed Seeds As Influenced By Environmental Factors, Edna Pauline Mertz

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The problem involved in this investigation was that of determining the effect of environmental factors upon the germination of twelve species of weed seeds. The seeds were harvested, divided into three groups designated as Groups I, II and III, and stored under different environmental conditions. Group I, a temperature control group, was stored under conditions of normal temperature, Group II under continued cold and Group III was subjected to intermittent freezing and thawing. A small fourth group, consisting of seeds of species which failed to germinate or showed low percentages of germination in earlier tests was subjected to scarification. These …

A Taxonomic And Distributional Study Of Simuliidae Of Western United States, George S. Stains Jun 1941

A Taxonomic And Distributional Study Of Simuliidae Of Western United States, George S. Stains

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Simuliidae, usually called black-flies or buffalo gnats, are abundant both as individuals and species in many parts of the western United States. The present study of this family was undertaken (1) because of the extensive annoyance caused to livestock, wild life, and man by the blood-sucking females, (2) because certain disease pathogens are known to be transmitted during the feeding process, and (3) because the species and distribution of these economically important pests are so incompletely known in the West.

Analysis Of Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Kill Records Of Five-Year Deer Removal From The Logan River Drainage Of Northern Utah, Wilmur Bartels

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Checking stations operated during the deer hunting season serve a two-fold purpose. It has long been recognized that such inspection stations aid greatly in the enforcement of hunting laws through the detection of illegal practices, and in many cases have been set up with this as a primary purpose. A more far reaching objective, however, is the collection of information to aid in the solution of the problems of maintenance of the range and the deer herd, and determination of the quality and quantity of the deer removal.

Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin May 1941

Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wool as it is shorn from the sheep, is known as grease wool. The first step in the manufacturing of wool is scouring, or removal of all grease and foreign matter. Within any given grade, as determined by length of staple and fineness of fiber, the yield of clean wool is the primary factor in determining the value of the original grease wool. The price of scoured or clean wool is multiplied by the percentage yield of clean wool to determine the value of the grease wool.

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle May 1941

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle

Bachelors’ Theses

Very little, if any, work has been done on the thorax musculature in · the larvae stage of insects. The work that has been done has been confined mostly to the muscles of the abdominal region. From this work it has been found that extraordinary differences in muscle pattern occur often between larvae and adult stages of the same species. Since the muscles of all insects are more or less comparatively the same, what is true of one .will be generally true of another. There may be slight variations found between the abdominal segments and head segments but these differences …

Normal Variation In Growth Rate Of Mice, Helene Gysin May 1941

Normal Variation In Growth Rate Of Mice, Helene Gysin

Bachelors’ Theses

Although there has been extensive research carried on with growth variations of rats, there has been comparatively little done on this subject with respect to mice. Stefan Kopec (1938) carried out an experiment in which 24, 000 daily weights were taken of 3 female and 49 male black - and - white - spotted, white, and lilac mice, all sexually mature. He found that males showed non-cyclic weight increase with irregular fluctuations, while the females showed marked cycles of weight change. These
cycles appeared at the time when sexual maturity was attained; decreased in intensity with age, and ended with …

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen May 1941

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Farmers and agriculturalists have in recent years become more conscious of the seriousness of the weed problems. The solution of this problem is obviously the development of more efficient and less costly methods of eradication. Most pernicious weeds are propagated vegetatively by means of underground parts in which reserve food is stored as a source of energy in tiding the plant over winter and initiating spring growth each year. In order to get at the behavior of these perennial parts, it is necessary to resort to a study of root reserves. This involves information not only on the composition of …

Phylogenetic Studies On The Blood-Inhabiting Trematodes, Harold Frederick Dieckmann Jan 1941

Phylogenetic Studies On The Blood-Inhabiting Trematodes, Harold Frederick Dieckmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Trematodes belonging to the blood-inhabiting group have long attracted the attention of parasitologists and medical men, especially those trematodos belonging to the family Schistosomidae because throw widely distributed species, Schistosoma Japonicum, S. haematobium, and S. mansoni, are parasitic in man, and in endemic regions are the cause of important human diseases. These schistosomes, with a few exception, have undergone more detailed research than any other trematodes.

Since the discovery of the first digenetic trematode exhibiting sexual dimorphism by Rudolphi (1819), which was named Distoma canaliculatum, and the descriptions of the other blood flukes up until the present time, a vast …

Trees And Shrubs Of Kings Canyon National Park, Kenneth M. Stocking Jan 1941

Trees And Shrubs Of Kings Canyon National Park, Kenneth M. Stocking

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In 1935 I first visited the Kings Canyon area. Since then I have spent many hours wandering through the woods and over the mountains in the area around the old General Grant National Park and the country which is now included in the Kings Canyon National Park. To my knowledge, no complete flora has been made for this vicinity. I consider the following pages to be the beginning of a fascinating work. It is the beginning because this paper includes only plants with woody stems.
