Detangling The Interrelationships Between Self-Regulation And Ill-Structured Problem Solving In Problem-Based Learning, Xun Ge, Victor Law, Kun Huang Oct 2016

Detangling The Interrelationships Between Self-Regulation And Ill-Structured Problem Solving In Problem-Based Learning, Xun Ge, Victor Law, Kun Huang

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

One of the goals for problem-based learning (PBL) is to promote self-regulation. Although self-regulation has been studied extensively, its interrelationships with ill-structured problem solving have been unclear. In order to clarify the interrelationships, this article proposes a conceptual framework illustrating the iterative processes among problem-solving stages (i.e., problem representation and solution generation) and self-regulation phases (i.e., planning, execution, and reflection). The dynamics of the interrelationships are further illustrated with three ill-structured problem-solving examples in different domains (i.e., information problem solving, historical inquiry, and science inquiry). The proposed framework contributes to research and practice by providing a new lens to examine …

Lies And Legality: Evaluating Legislation's Role In Monitoring Campaign Truthfulness, James E. Britton Oct 2016

Lies And Legality: Evaluating Legislation's Role In Monitoring Campaign Truthfulness, James E. Britton

Journal of Legislation Online Supplement

Given the gravity of a campaign to be elected to the highest office of what could conservatively be called a major international power, one might be tempted think that apparent perfidy would be a serious, and perhaps even criminal, charge. After all, these are men and women going out in front of every camera in the country and asking its people to consign their trust to them with their vote; doing so under false pretenses and misrepresentations seems to transcend the boundaries of the merely unsavory into the unconscionable. However, in reality, the inverse of that assertion actually carries the …

Brief Amici Curiae Of Professors Of History, Political Science, And Law In Support Of Respondent, Kristin Collins, Catherine E. Stetson, Jessica K. Jacobs

Faculty Scholarship

Sex-based laws premised on archaic presumptions about the proper roles of men and women run afoul of established constitutional principles, especially when they interfere with the parent-child relationship. Amici write to explain the history of the federal government’s use of sex-based classifications in the regulation of citizenship. In its regulation of intergenerational and interspousal citizenship transmission, the federal government has perpetuated outdated gender-based norms concerning proper parental roles, even when those norms have been rejected in other legal and social contexts. In addition, the laws governing derivative citizenship have significantly encumbered the ability of American fathers to transmit citizenship to …

National Wildlife Federation V. National Marine Fisheries Service, Jacob R. Schwaller Oct 2016

National Wildlife Federation V. National Marine Fisheries Service, Jacob R. Schwaller

Public Land & Resources Law Review

The tide in the legal battle surrounding anadromous fish protections in the Columbia River watershed most recently swung in favor of the fish. In the latest iteration of National Wildlife Federation v. National Marine Fisheries Service, the Court found in a lengthy opinion that NOAA fisheries acted arbitrarily and capriciously when it issued its 2014 BiOp concluding that the FCRPS did not violate the ESA. The Court also ruled that the Corps violated NEPA by failing to prepare an environmental impact statement in connection with their records of decision implementing reasonable and prudent alternatives in the BiOp. This decision could …
