Mechanical Characterization Of Parts Produced By Ceramic On‐Demand Extrusion Process, Amir Ghazanfari, Wenbin Li, Ming Leu, Gregory Hilmas
Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering
Ceramic On‐Demand Extrusion (CODE) is an additive manufacturing process recently developed to produce dense three‐dimensional ceramic components. In this paper, the properties of parts produced using this freeform extrusion fabrication process are described. High solids loading (~60 vol%) alumina paste was prepared to fabricate parts and standard test methods were employed to examine their properties including the density, strength, Young's modulus, Weibull modulus, toughness, and hardness. Microstructural evaluation was also performed to measure the grain size and critical flaw size. The results indicate that the properties of parts surpass most other ceramic additive manufacturing processes and match conventional fabrication techniques.

Lighted Ear Curette, Kaitlin Klotzle, Kelsey Ashmore, Crysta Yamamoto, Katrina Elfrink, Cynthia Stoller
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The ear canal is a sensitive and small part of the human body that is prone to accumulate cerumen or lodge foreign bodies. In order to clean the ear canal or remove foreign bodies, three hands are required: one to brace the patient's head, one to maneuver the curette that is used to clean the ear, and one to hold a light source in order to make the small, dark area visible. Therefore, a design is needed that can allow a doctor to safely clean an ear with an instrument that only requires two hands. Furthermore, the design must have …

Pore Formation In Aluminum Castings: Theoretical Calculations And The Extrinsic Effect Of Entrained Surface Oxide Films, Pedram Yousefian
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Aluminum alloy castings are being integrated increasingly into automotive and aerospace assemblies due to their extraordinary properties, especially high strength-to-density ratio. To produce high quality castings, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms of the formation of defects, specifically pores and inclusion, in aluminum. There have been numerous studies on pore formation during solidification which lead to hot tearing and/or reduction in mechanical properties. However, a comprehensive study that correlates pore formation theory with in situ observations and modeling assumptions from the literature as well as experimental observations in not available. The present study is motivated to fill this gap. …

The idea for the following project came from the Lean Manufacturing class that is offered at Central Washington University. In this class the manufacturing processes is demonstrated through the production of guitar kits. A problem with the class is that the CNC machine gets backed up causing a bottleneck in the production line. The solution to this problem was to make a pin router duplicator. A pin router duplicator is a device that allows the operator to trace a finished part with a pin while a router mimics its movements, cutting a new part. The component that is looked into …
Nanotextured Titanium Surfaces For Implants: Manufacturing And Packaging Aspects, Sachin Bhosle
Nanotextured Titanium Surfaces For Implants: Manufacturing And Packaging Aspects, Sachin Bhosle
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
It has been shown that nanotexturing the surface of otherwise smooth titanium orthopedic materials increases osteoblast proliferation in vitro, and the bone-implant contact area and pullout force in vivo. However, this prior work has not focused on the requirements for scale-up to industrial processes. This dissertation reports on titanium surface modifications by electrochemical anodization using a benign NH4F electrolyte, and a hybrid electrolyte also containing AgF, rather than hazardous hydrofluoric acid used elsewhere. Nanotube fabrication of Ti6Al4V foils, rods, thermal plasma sprayed commercial implants, and laser and e-beam melted powder materials was demonstrated.
It was found …

Water Jet Cutting Head Actuator, Jacob D. Augustynovich
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In an effort to increase efficiency and productivity, WARDJet was seeking a better actuation method for the cutting head on their waterjets. Current actuation methods were, for the most part, purely mechanical, relying on compressed air, springs, and water pressure to open and close the valve to 60,000 psi of water. Increasing the speed of the on/off cycle times of the waterjet would allow for faster movements of the cutting head from one cut to the next, increasing the overall amount of products cut in a day, week, and year. This obviously points to increased sales, increased profit, and increased …
Ti-Fe Intermetallics Analysis And Control In Joining Titanium Alloy And Stainless Steel By Laser Metal Deposition, Wei Li
Masters Theses
"Direct fusion joining titanium alloy and stainless steel can cause brittle Ti-Fe intermetallics which compromise the mechanical properties of diffusion bonds between titanium alloys and stainless steel. Therefore, filler metals are required as transition layers. In this research, stainless steel metallic powder was directly deposited on the titanium alloy substrate by laser beam, the Ti-Fe intermetallic phases formed in this process were investigated through analyzing fracture morphology, phase identification, and Vickers Hardness Number (VHN). After that, Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) was applied to explore a new fabricating process to join Ti6Al4V and SS316. A transition composition route was introducedTi6Al4V → …

Error Mapping Of Build Volume In Selective Laser Melting, Ninad Kulkarni
Error Mapping Of Build Volume In Selective Laser Melting, Ninad Kulkarni
Masters Theses
“Selective laser melting is one of the commonly used additive manufacturing processes employed for production of functional part. Therefore, quality aspects such as dimensional accuracy have become a point of great interest. Like all of the other additive manufacturing processes selective laser melting process suffers from the issue if having wide range of process parameters making the process control a complex task. Additionally, issues specific to the selective laser melting process such as position dependency of accuracy of the part, makes it difficult to predict the resulting dimensional inconsistencies in the part manufactured by this processes. This research is an …
Adaptive Scheduling For Operating Room Management, Honghan Ye
Adaptive Scheduling For Operating Room Management, Honghan Ye
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
The perioperative process in hospitals can be modelled as a 3-stage no-wait flow shop. The utilization of OR units and the average waiting time of patients are related to makespan and total completion time, respectively. However, minimizations of makespan and total completion time are NP-hard and NP-complete. Consequently, achieving good effectiveness and efficiency is a challenge in no-wait flow shop scheduling. The average idle time (AIT) and current and future idle time (CFI) heuristics are proposed to minimize makespan and total completion time, respectively. To improve effectiveness, current idle times and future idle times are taken into consideration …
Torque Response Of Thin-Film Ferromagnetic Prisms In Uniform Magnetic Fields At Macro And Micro Scales, Soroosh Torabi
Torque Response Of Thin-Film Ferromagnetic Prisms In Uniform Magnetic Fields At Macro And Micro Scales, Soroosh Torabi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
The non-contact nature of magnetic actuation makes it useful in a variety of microscale applications, from microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip devices to classical MEMS or even microrobotics. Ferromagnetic materials like nickel are particularly attractive, because they can be easily deposited and patterned using traditional lithography-based microscale fabrication methods. However, the response of ferromagnetic materials in a magnetic field can be difficult to predict. When placed in a magnetic field, high magnetization is induced in these ferromagnetic materials, which in turn generates force and/or torque on the ferromagnetic bodies. The magnitude and direction of these forces are highly dependent on the type …

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Majority of the products get discarded at end-of-life (EoL), causing environmental pollution, and resulting in a complete loss of all materials and embodied energy. Adopting a closed-loop material flow approach can aid preventing such losses and enable EoL value recovery from these products. Design and engineering decisions made and how products are used impact the capability to implement EOL strategies such as disassembly and remanufacturing. Some underlying factors affecting the capability to implement these EOL strategies have been discussed in previous studies. However, relevant metrics and attributes are not well defined and comprehensive methods to quantitatively evaluate them are lacking. …
