Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela
Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela
Wayne State University Dissertations
Sound source localization is typically conducted in open space so that the line of sight is not blocked among individual sensors. This research presents a new technology that enables one to see acoustically through a solid Plexiglass enclosure to locate a sound source stationed inside at some arbitrarily selected locations. By using SODAR technology, non-invasive laser-assisted microphones, analog, and digital signal processing (band-pass filtering, fast Fourier transform algorithm, cross-correlations, and triangulations) satisfactory sound source localization results were obtained. In this project, the enclosure walls were flat; only the azimuth angle of a sound source could be determined. To obtain the …

Assessment Of Small-Scale Mechanical Damage On Safety Performance Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Maher A. Almohammedali
Wayne State University Dissertations
Battery safety studies of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) related to mechanical abusive loadinginvolving contact compression of hard objects, bending and nail penetration usually show that LIBs can withstand some mechanical deformation prior to internal short circuit (ISC). Stress or strain-based criteria has been suggested to understand local conditions between the anode, cathode and the separator due such abusive mechanical loading. A strain-based criterion has also been developed at Wayne State and reported in open literature (Newaz et al.) Focus of such work has been to determine strain levels that may rupture the separator putting in contact the anode and cathode leading …

The abrupt occurrence of twinning when Mg is deformed leads to a highly anisotropic response, making it too unreliable for structural use and too unpredictable for observation. Here, we describe an in-situ transmission electron microscopy experiment on Mg crystals with strategically designed geometries for visualization of a long-proposed but unverified twinning mechanism. Combining with atomistic simulations and topological analysis, we conclude that twin nucleation occurs through a pure-shuffle mechanism that requires prismatic-basal transformations. Also, we verified a crystal geometry dependent twin growth mechanism, that is the early-stage growth associated with instability of plasticity flow, which can be dominated either by …

Adhesively bonded joints have an advantage in joining dissimilar engineering materials due to their high structural efficiency and being lightweight. These joints are either between two opposite laminates or between a composite laminate and a metal structure. The aerospace and automotive industries have seen an increase in utilizing these adhesive joints in their engineering applications. Joint strength along with the failure mode (adhesive, delamination, etc.) is the most important parameter to evaluate when understanding the capability of the adhesive joint. In this paper, a regression and a classification machine learning (ML) model are utilized to predict the failure load and …

This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a partially wetting polymer droplet driven over a nanostructured interface. We consider the bead-spring model to represent a polymeric liquid that partially wets a rough surface composed of a periodic array of spherical particles. Results show that at sufficiently small values of external force, the droplet remains pinned at the particle's surface, whereas above the threshold its motion consists of alternating periods of pinning and rapid displacements between neighboring particles. The latter process involves large periodic variation of the advancing and receding contact angles due to the attachment …

One of the technological challenges in the widespread application of additive manufacturing is the formation of undesired material microstructure and defects. Specifically, in metal additive manufacturing, the microstructural formation of columnar grains in Ti-6Al-4V is common and results in anisotropic mechanical properties and a reduction in properties such as ductility and endurance limit. This work presents the application of hexagonal and circular arrays of synchronized lasers to alter the microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V in favor of equiaxed grains. An anisotropic heat transfer model obtains the temporal/spatial temperature distribution and constructs the solidification map for various process parameters, including laser power, laser …

Effects Of Additive Manufacturing Techniques On The Magnetocaloric Properties And Chemical Stability Of Lafexcoysi13-X-Y Alloys, Binyam Wodajo
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging process to fabricate net shape, intricate, engineering components with minimal material waste; however, traditionally it has been largely applied to structural materials. AM of functional materials, such as magnetic materials, has received much less attention and the field is still in its infancy. To date, AM of magnetocaloric regenerators for magnetic refrigeration (an energy-efficient alternative to the conventional vapor-compression cooling technology), remains a challenge. There are several magnetic refrigerator device designs in existence today that are predicted to be highly energy-efficient, on condition that suitable working materials can be developed. This challenge in manufacturing …
Type Iii And Iv Deformation Twins In Minerals And Metals, John P. Hirth, Greg Hirth, Jian Wang
Type Iii And Iv Deformation Twins In Minerals And Metals, John P. Hirth, Greg Hirth, Jian Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Type IV twins are defined and shown to exist in triclinic crystal systems, as well as in some monoclinic and trigonal systems. Here, we focus on Pericline twins in triclinic plagioclase as an example. Type IV twins are associated with the irrationality of one of the twinning elements that is rational for a type II twin. The formation of type IV twins is accomplished through the shear on a K2 plane produced by the motion of twinning disconnections on a K1 plane, followed by rotational partitioning. The same systems where type IV twins are present also have type III twins …

Tuning surface emissivity has been of great interest in thermal radiation applications, such as thermophotovoltaics and passive radiative cooling. As a low-cost and scalable technique for manufacturing surfaces with desired emissivities, femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP) has recently drawn enormous attention. Despite the versatility offered by FLSP, there is a knowledge gap in accurately predicting the outcome emissivity prior to fabrication. In this work, we demonstrate the immense advantage of employing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to predict the emissivity of complex surfaces. For this aim, we used FLSP to fabricate 116 different aluminum samples. A comprehensive dataset was established by …

Construction Of A Peridynamic Model For Viscous Flow, Jiangming Zhao, Adam Larios, Florin Bobaru Ph.D.
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We derive the Eulerian formulation for a peridynamic (PD) model of Newtonian viscous flow starting from fundamental principles: conservation of mass and momentum. This formulation is different from models for viscous flow that utilize the so-called “peridynamic differential operator” with the classical Navier- Stokes equations. We show that the classical continuity equation is a limiting case of the PD one, assuming certain smoothness conditions. The PD model for viscous flow is calibrated to the classical Navier-Stokes equations by enforcing linear consistency for the viscous stress term. Couette and Poiseuille flows, and incompressible fluid flow past a regular lattice of cylinders …

Symmetric Or Asymmetric Glide Resistance To Twinning Disconnection?, Mingyu Gong, Houyu Ma, Kunming Yang, Yue Liu, Jian-Feng Nie, Jian Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Successive gliding of twinning disconnections (TDs) creates three-dimensional twins in parent crystal and accommodates shear deformation. It is generally recognized that TD is subject to the same Peierls stress as it glides forward or backward because of its dislocation character and the twofold rotation symmetry of the twin plane. Based on atomistic simulations, we demonstrate that the glide of TDs may be subject to a symmetric or asymmetric resistance corresponding to step character, symmetric resistance for A/A type steps but asymmetric resistance for A/B type steps, where A and B represent crystallographic planes in twin and matrix. Furthermore, we experimentally …

Liquid manipulation is the foundation of most laboratory processes. For macroscale liquid handling, both do-it-yourself and commercial robotic systems are available; however, for microscale, reagents are expensive and sample preparation is difficult. Over the last decade, lab-on-a-chip (LOC) systems have come to serve for microscale liquid manipulation; however, lacking automation andmulti-functionality. Despite their potential synergies, each has grown separately and no suitable interface yet exists to link macro-level robotics with micro-level LOC or microfluidic devices. Here, we present a robot-assisted acoustofluidic end effector (RAEE) system, comprising a robotic arm and an acoustofluidic end effector, that combines robotics and microfluidic functionalities. We …
