Pipe inspections are performed using large robots that utilize wheels or tracks for locomotion. Due to their large size, weight and hard exterior, these robots can occasionally cause damage to the pipe interiors during inspection. In addition, these pipe inspection robots struggle with the ability to move in a congested environment and adapt to obstacles or geometry changes within the pipe. This project investigates the capabilities of auxetic and conventional metamaterials to achieve locomotion in an enclosed channel through the different metamaterials reactions to an axial force. However, it comes with the drawbacks of long computation time and needing many aerodynamic coefficients which can be hard to obtain. The Modified Point Mass Trajectory Model was introduced as a simplified solution. This work compares them with each other, and with some more conventional methods. A variety of normal operation and accident scenarios can generate thermal stresses large enough to cause cracking in light-water reactor (LWR) fuel pellets. Cracking of fuel pellets can lead to reduced heat removal, larger centerline temperatures, and localized stress in cladding, all of which impact fuel performance. It is important to understand the temperature profile on the pellet before and after cracking to improve cracking models in fuel performance codes such as BISON. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) installed 7.95 miles of cable median barrier (CMB) along K-10, K-96, and US-75 freeways in 2011 and 2012. In January 2020, KDOT funded a study to determine the in-service performance of its CMBs. In addition, KDOT sought to determine if it was cost-effective to modify guidelines for installing median barriers, which were based on annual daily traffic and median width.

A winnower is a device that separates chaff from usable grain after harvesting and threshing. Many such devices exist, from industrial-scale winnowers sorting high volumes of grain to personal coffee bean winnowers. This in situ transmission electron microscopy work presents a nanoscale characterization of the microstructural evolution in 3D-printed Inconel 718 (IN718) while exposed to elevated temperature and an associated change in the mechanical property under tensile loading. Here, we utilized a specially designed specimen shape that enables tensile testing of nano-sized thin films without off-plane deformations. Consistent manufacturing of volumetrically dense engineering components, free of solidification cracks by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), has been demonstrated for Al-Si alloys such as AlSi10Mg and Al12Si. The success in LPBF of these alloys is attributed to the near eutectic composition with a small freezing range. To illuminate this observation, cracking susceptibility was examined from Scheil-Gulliver solidification modeling by calculating the hot cracking susceptibility, |dT/dfS1/2|.
