Design And Analysis Of A Pipe And Pump System Constructed To Connect Port Canaveral To The Banana River, Nicole Ann Mcclain
Theses and Dissertations
The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) has hosted an extensive array of plants and animals throughout its lifetime, having one of the greatest species’ diversity of all North American estuaries. In addition to the variety of marine wildlife that is supported by the IRL, the system is also a recreational and economic resource for the counties bordering it. The biological integrity of the IRL, however, has shown evidence of decline in the last few decades, due to impaired water quality caused by pollution and disruptions to natural circulation patterns. If far-reaching changes are made to repair the water quality of the …

Event-Triggered Control Architectures For Scheduling Information Exchange In Uncertain And Multiagent Systems, Stefan Ristevski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the numerous advantages that networked controlled systems provide, potential network overload in these systems can severely degrade their performance and even cause catastrophic failures. To this end, the work presented in this dissertation provides a neat solution on reducing network utilization in uncertain networked controlled systems using an adaptive event-triggered control approach predicated on a novel dynamical threshold and information exchange methodology while guaranteeing closed-loop system stability.
In particular, consider a system consisting of an operator (e.g, a ground station) and an uncertain controlled dynamical system (e.g., a vehicle equipped with feedback control algorithm), where the aim of the …

Interrelation Of Thermal Stimulation With Haptic Perception, Emotion, And Memory, Mehdi Hojatmadani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Haptics is an interdisciplinary field of science that deals with how humans perceive and respond to different sensory cues perceived through touch. Thermal haptics as a branch deals with how humans perceive the temperature sensation and respond to that. The process in which thermal perception occurs is well known to researchers. What seems missing in the literature is how temperature interacts or sometimes intervenes in other physiological and psychological aspects of our lives. In this research, a series of studies are presented where the main focus was how temperature and brain interact with each other to impede or enhance our …

Reduced Order Modeling Based On Hybrid Snapshot Simulation, Feng Bai
Reduced Order Modeling Based On Hybrid Snapshot Simulation, Feng Bai
Theses and Dissertations
Reduced order model (ROM) is an emerging technique for rapid and efficient numerical simulation and computation in science and engineering applications. The ROM consists of two stages: (1) the offline snapshot simulation to produce high-quality snapshot data representative of model trajectories, from which the projection subspace can be extracted and used for ROM construction; and (2) the online simulation to utilize the ROM built in stage 1. The snapshot simulation is traditionally performed with full order model (FOM) and is computationally demanding, which is one of the most critical limiting factors for the development and deployment of ROM in real-world …
Optimizing Heat Pipes With Partially-Hybrid Mesh-Groove Wicking Structures And Its Capillary-Flowing Analysis By Simulation, Guanghan Huang
Optimizing Heat Pipes With Partially-Hybrid Mesh-Groove Wicking Structures And Its Capillary-Flowing Analysis By Simulation, Guanghan Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Heat pipes are known as efficient two-phase heat transfer devices and widely utilized in thermal management of power plants and electronics. The hybrid mesh-groove wick promises to attain a higher thermal performance of the heat pipe by balancing the permeability and capillarity. However, traditional fully hybrid mesh-groove wick presents considerable condensation thermal resistance due to the condensed quiescent working fluid and thick, saturated wick.
In this study, a novel partially hybrid mesh-groove wick has been proposed to enhance the evaporation of L-shaped copper-ethanol heat pipes. L-shaped heat pipe promotes high-efficient draining of condensed liquid by gravity, while traditional straight-shaped heat …

Printing Quality Improvement For Laser-Induced Forward Transfer Bioprinting: Numerical Modeling And Experimental Validation, Jie Qu, Chaoran Dou, Ben Xu, Jianzhi Li, Zhonghao Rao, Andrew Tsin
Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
Laser-induced-forward-transfer (LIFT)-based laser assisted bioprinting (LAB) has great advantages over other three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting techniques, such as none-contact, free of clogging, high precision, and good compatibility. In a typical LIFT based LAB process, a jet flow transfers the bioink from the ribbon to the substrate due to bioink bubble generation and collapse, and the printing quality is highly dependent on the jet flow regime (stable or unstable), so it is a great challenge to understand the connection between the jet flow and the printing outcomes. To tackle this challenge, a novel computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD)-based model was developed in this study to …

We met with our target customer to understand their needs for the ideal portable car wash. Their key needs included use by any sized passenger vehicle, washing the car as good as a community car wash, and must be portable. We started by researching current products that could match these needs, and then we sketched four of our own designs to match our customer’s needs. With these design sketches we used a metrics tool to determine which design was the best. From there we did engineering calculations to analyze the trouble spots in our design, such as the water pressure …
The Effects Of Noise On Parametrically Excited Systems With Nonlinear Damping, Donghao Li
The Effects Of Noise On Parametrically Excited Systems With Nonlinear Damping, Donghao Li
Theses and Dissertations
Parametric oscillators are a class of resonating systems in which a parameter, such as stiffness in a mechanical system or capacitance in an electrical system, is periodically modulated in order to alter the system response in a desired manner. A resonance effect occurs when the pump frequency is near twice of resonant frequency. Such systems are said to be “parametrically pumped,” and this pump can, above a certain amplitude threshold, destabilize the system in the absence of nonlinearities. Parametric resonance is widely observed in nature and has been employed in a large variety of engineered systems, most notably in micro-electro-mechanical …
Pore-Resolving Simulations To Study The Impacts Of Char Morphology On Zone Ii Combustion And Effectiveness Factor Models, Dongyu Liang, Simcha L. Singer
Pore-Resolving Simulations To Study The Impacts Of Char Morphology On Zone Ii Combustion And Effectiveness Factor Models, Dongyu Liang, Simcha L. Singer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Combustion and gasification of pulverized char often occur under zone II conditions, in which the rate of conversion depends on both heterogeneous reaction and gas transport within the particle's porous structure. The morphology of porous char has a strong influence on intra-particle diffusion, and thus, on the overall conversion rate. Because pulverized coal and biomass char particles are often irregularly shaped and contain pores and voids which can approach the size of the particles themselves, conventional models based on spherical symmetry and coarse-grained, upscaled, effective continuum conservation equations are not applicable or appropriate. A recent 3-D, pore-resolving CFD simulation approach …

Resin/reinforcement wetting is a key parameter in the manufacturing of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based composite materials. Determining the contact angle between combinations of liquid resin and reinforcement surfaces is a common method for quantifying wettability. As experimental measurement of contact angle can be difficult when screening multiple high-performance resins with CNT materials such as CNT bundles or yarns, computational approaches are necessary to fa-cilitate CNT composite material design. A molecular dynamics simulation method is developed to predict the contact angle of high-performance polymer resins on CNT surfaces dominated by aromatic carbon, aliphatic carbon, or a mixture thereof (amorphous carbon). Several resin …

Using a set of large eddy point-particle simulations, we explore the fluid dynamics of an ejected puff resulting from a cough/sneeze. The ejection contains over 61 000 potentially virus-laden droplets at an injection Reynolds number of about 46 000, comparable to an actual cough/sneeze. We observe that global puff properties, such as centroid, puff volume, momentum, and buoyancy vary little across realizations. Other properties, such as maximum extent, shape, and edge velocity of the puff, may exhibit substantial variation. In many realizations, a portion of the puff splits off and advances along a random direction, while keeping airborne droplet nuclei …
