Anomalous Decay Of Nanomechanical Modes Going Through Nonlinear Resonance, Oriel Shoshani, Steven W. Shaw, Mark I. Dykman Jan 2017

Anomalous Decay Of Nanomechanical Modes Going Through Nonlinear Resonance, Oriel Shoshani, Steven W. Shaw, Mark I. Dykman

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Because of the small size of nanomechanical systems, their vibrations become nonlinear already for small amplitudes. Many nontrivial aspects of the vibration dynamics arise from the coexistence of several nonlinearly coupled modes. We show that such coupling can lead to anomalous decay of the modes where they go through nonlinear resonance, so that their amplitude-dependent frequencies become commensurate. We demonstrate the possibility of a strongly nonmonotonic dependence of the decay rate on the amplitude if one of the modes serves as a thermal reservoir for another mode. Where the decay of both modes is slow compared to the rate of …

Impact Of Pretreatment Methods On Fast Pyrolysis Of Biomass, Yash Donepudi

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Biomass is considered a renewable source of energy with minimum carbon foot print if managed sustainably. The majority of the worlds energy is spend on transportation, and fast pyrolysis of biomass could be a potential route for production of a sustainable liquid transportation fuel. However, there are several hurdles in the conversion process. This work addresses these hurdles by investigating the impact of several pretreatment methods on fast pyrolysis including thermal pretreatment (torrefaction), comminution/grinding, mineral reduction. The impact of important parameters like heat transfer medium, conversion temperature and particle size were also investigated.

A mild thermal pretreatment of biomass (~10-15% …

Nanotextured Titanium Surfaces For Implants: Manufacturing And Packaging Aspects, Sachin Bhosle Jan 2017

Nanotextured Titanium Surfaces For Implants: Manufacturing And Packaging Aspects, Sachin Bhosle

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

It has been shown that nanotexturing the surface of otherwise smooth titanium orthopedic materials increases osteoblast proliferation in vitro, and the bone-implant contact area and pullout force in vivo. However, this prior work has not focused on the requirements for scale-up to industrial processes. This dissertation reports on titanium surface modifications by electrochemical anodization using a benign NH4F electrolyte, and a hybrid electrolyte also containing AgF, rather than hazardous hydrofluoric acid used elsewhere. Nanotube fabrication of Ti6Al4V foils, rods, thermal plasma sprayed commercial implants, and laser and e-beam melted powder materials was demonstrated.

It was found …

Mechanical And Computational Evaluation Of Cementitious Materials With Hollow Glass Microsphere Inclusions, Zachary J. Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effect of volumetric replacement of cementitious materials by an inert filler known as hollow glass microspheres on elastic properties is evaluated in this study through a combined computational and experimental approach. This approach considered the variation in properties of type I Portland cement for 0, 5, 10, and 15% volume fractions of two kind of glass microspheres; one was high density with high crushing strength, and the other with a relative lower density. Using a suite of software called Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory (VCCTL), the microstructural details were determined for 80% degree of hydration of the cement …

Turbulent Spray Combustion Modeling Using Direct Integration Of Chemistry And Flamelet Generated Manifolds, Ashraya Goyal

Wayne State University Theses

Turbulent spray combustion of n-dodecane was modeled at engine relevant conditions using various combustion models (Direct Integration of Chemistry and Flamelet Generated Manifolds) and turbulence models (Dynamic Structure Large Eddy Simulation and RNG Reynolds-Averaged Naiver-Stokes). A recently developed n-dodecane mechanism was utilized and the turbulent spray was simulated at various combustion chamber initial gas temperature and pressure conditions. Mesh with size of 31 microns was utilized to resolve small eddies around the spray. The pressure-based ignition delay, flame lift-off length, and spray and jet penetrations were studied and compared with experimental measurements. The Direct Integration of Chemistry and Flamelet Generated …

Investigation Of The Thermal Performance Of Sierpinski Carpet Fractal Fins In A Natural Convection Environment, Jennifer P. Shaffer Jan 2017

Investigation Of The Thermal Performance Of Sierpinski Carpet Fractal Fins In A Natural Convection Environment, Jennifer P. Shaffer

Honors College Theses

This experimental investigation studies the thermal performance of the first four iterations of the Sierpinski carpet pattern in a natural convection environment. This particular fractal geometry is promising in that it increases the available surface area for heat transfer while simultaneously decreasing the mass of the system. This makes it a potentially advantageous design for fins or heat sinks, especially in aerospace applications where minimizing mass of the system is essential. The thermal performance was evaluated by comparing the efficiency, effectiveness, and effectiveness per unit mass for each fractal iteration. The results indicate that efficiency decreases with each fractal iteration …

Probabilistic Analysis And Verification Framework For Adaptive Flight Control, Mario Luca Fravolini, Tansel Yucelen, Marcello Napolitano Jan 2017

Probabilistic Analysis And Verification Framework For Adaptive Flight Control, Mario Luca Fravolini, Tansel Yucelen, Marcello Napolitano

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A crucial aspect that could facilitate the applications of adaptive control systems in aerospace applications is the development of effective validation and verification procedures. Most of the existing analysis and design frameworks for adaptive controllers are based on the Lyapunov direct method. One well-known drawback of this approach is the conservatism in the estimation of the uniform ultimate boundedness region with little practical utility. To overcome this limitation, a probabilistic framework for the design of uniform ultimate boundedness regions is proposed where uncertain parameters and adaptive controls are considered as random variables. In this framework, the design is translated into …

Plume Characterization Of Electric Solid Propellant Pulsed Microthrusters, Matthew S. Glascock, Joshua L. Rovey, Shae Williams, Jason Thrasher Jan 2017

Plume Characterization Of Electric Solid Propellant Pulsed Microthrusters, Matthew S. Glascock, Joshua L. Rovey, Shae Williams, Jason Thrasher

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electric solid propellants are an attractive option for propulsion because they are ignited only by an applied electric current. This leads to capabilities such as on-demand throttling and reignition in chemical combustion operation, and it lends itself to application in electric propulsion. In this work, the plasma plume created by electric solid propellant pulsed micro thrusters is investigated using a nude Faraday probe, a triple Langmuir probe, and residual gas analysis. The thrusters are tested at a vacuum level of 2 x 10-5torr. Results indicate an average plume electron temperature of 1.7 eV and a density of 1011 to 1014cm-3. …
