Electrokinetic Phenomena In Pencil Lead-Based Microfluidics, Yashar Bashirzadeh, Venkat Maruthamuthu, Shizhi Qian

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Fabrication of microchannels and associated electrodes to generate electrokinetic phenomena often involves costly materials and considerable effort. In this study, we used graphite pencil-leads as low cost, disposable 3D electrodes to investigate various electrokinetic phenomena in straight cylindrical microchannels, which were themselves fabricated by using a graphite rod as the microchannel mold. Individual pencil-leads were employed as the micro-electrodes arranged along the side walls of the microchannel. Efficient electrokinetic phenomena provided by the 3D electrodes, including alternating current electroosmosis (ACEO), induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO), and dielectrophoresis (DEP), were demonstrated by the introduced pencil-lead based microfluidic devices. The electrokinetic phenomena were characterized …

Modeling Time-Dependent Performance Of Submerged Superhydrophobic Or Slippery Surfaces, Ahmed A. Hemeda

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study is to quantify the transient performance of microfabricated superhydrophobic surfaces when used in underwater applications. A mathematical framework is developed and used to predict the stability, longevity, and drag reduction benefits of submerged superhydrophobic surfaces with two- or three-dimensional micro-textures. In addition, a novel design is proposed to improve the drag-reduction benefits of lubricant-infused surfaces, by placing a layer of trapped air underneath the lubricant layer. The new design is referred to as lubricant–infused surfaces with trapped air, and it is designed to eliminate the long-lasting longevity problem of submerged superhydrophobic surfaces. The effectiveness of …

Magnetic Materials Characterization And Modeling For The Enhanced Design Of Magnetic Shielding Of Cryomodules In Particle Accelerators., Sanjay K. Sah

Theses and Dissertations

Particle accelerators produce beams of high-energy particles, which are used for both fundamental and applied scientific research and are critical to the development of accelerator driven sub-critical reactor systems. An effective magnetic shield is very important to achieve higher quality factor (Qo) of the cryomodule of a particle accelerator. The allowed value of field inside the cavity due to all external fields (particularly the Earth’s magnetic field) is ~15 mG or less. The goal of this PhD dissertation is to comprehensively study the magnetic properties of commonly used magnetic shielding materials at both cryogenic and room temperatures. This knowledge can …

Mechanical Property Characterization Of Polymeric Composites Reinforced By Continuous Microfibers, Ali Zubayar Jan 2016

Mechanical Property Characterization Of Polymeric Composites Reinforced By Continuous Microfibers, Ali Zubayar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Innumerable experimental works have been conducted to study the effect of polymerization on the potential properties of the composites. Experimental techniques are employed to understand the effects of various fibers, their volume fractions and matrix properties in polymer composites. However, these experiments require fabrication of various composites which are time consuming and cost prohibitive. Advances in computational micromechanics allow us to study the various polymer based composites by using finite element simulations. The mechanical properties of continuous fiber composite strands are directional. In traditional continuous fiber laminated composites, all fibers lie in the same plane. This provides very desirable increases …

Oscillating Heat Pipe Performance With Evaporator Section Modifications, Mitchell Hoesing Jan 2016

Oscillating Heat Pipe Performance With Evaporator Section Modifications, Mitchell Hoesing

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The continuous development of electronic components to become faster and smaller has led to an increasing problem with thermal management. Thermal management ensures that the component operating temperatures are within a safe range, which maintains performance and improves reliability and lifespan. Traditional thermal management devices, such as the extruded-fin heat sink, are incapable of maintaining the safe operating temperature range for current and future high heat flux cooling applications. A device that has the capability to meet this growing need is the oscillating heat pipe. Oscillating heat pipes (OHPs) are passive, two-phase cooling devices that have been shown to transfer …

The Effects Of Diffuser Exit Velocity And Distance Between Supply And Return Apertures On The Efficiency Of An Air Distribution System In An Office Space, Khaled Abdel Razzaq Saadeddin Jan 2016

The Effects Of Diffuser Exit Velocity And Distance Between Supply And Return Apertures On The Efficiency Of An Air Distribution System In An Office Space, Khaled Abdel Razzaq Saadeddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The distance between supply air diffusers and return air grilles is an important design parameter that has not been properly investigated. Sometimes, design and installation constraints force the engineer or the contractor to place the return duct close to the supply duct which can have a huge impact on the overall efficiency of air distribution in the zone. When the return grille is too close to the supply diffuser, air by-passes the room and flows directly back into the return duct. By-passing of the air in a zone of a building will prevent the heat transfer and the circulation that …

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan Jan 2016

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan

Conference papers

An investigation into solar photovoltaic (PV) system control topology selection, when partial shade is anticipated in the solar array, is presented. As available area is maximised in Building Integrated PV (BIPV) systems, shading is an inevitable consequence. The presence of partial shading in a PV array leads to multiple power peaks in the power-voltage curve, due to bypass diode sections being triggered, and an increase in module mismatch losses in the array. A building energy design software, Integrated Environmental Solutions, is used to determine the shadowed area on PV modules throughout the year, incorporating the PV system location and geometrical …

Using Photovoltaics To Power Electrochemical Chloride Extraction From Concrete, Sean Bond, Lynette O'Callaghan, Niall Holmes Dr., Brian Norton

Conference papers

Corrosion of embedded steel in reinforced concrete (RC) is a world-wide problem, that reduces structural performance and lifespan. Chloride attack may be a result of seawater, de-icing salts or contaminated admixtures, brought on by ingress of chlorides into the concrete. Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) is a non-destructive treatment for contaminated RC structures, that due to uncertainty of treatment times and applied current densities, is only 50% effective. It is often diesel powered has an environmental impact and often very costly due to the long treatment times. To improve the efficiency of ECE the influences of concrete resistance, cement type and …

Friction Stir Welding And Processing On Titanium Alloys, Dawei Li Jan 2016

Friction Stir Welding And Processing On Titanium Alloys, Dawei Li

Theses and Dissertations

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process that utilizes a non-consumable, rotating tool to plunge into abutting faces and transverse along the weld path. Material nearby the tool is softened by frictional heat generated via local friction and plastic deformation. Severe plastic deformation of the interface along with a state of hydrostatic pressure results in creation of a joint by metallurgical bonding. Because the temperature of the material during the welding process is below that of the melting point, FSW has numerous advantages over conventional fusion welding. Friction consolidation (FC) is also a solid-state process that uses a …
