Effects Of Mass Layer Nonuniformity On A Quartz-Crystal Microbalance, Nan Liu, Jiashi Yang, Weiqiu Chen
Effects Of Mass Layer Nonuniformity On A Quartz-Crystal Microbalance, Nan Liu, Jiashi Yang, Weiqiu Chen
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We study the effects of the nonuniform thickness of a thin mass layer on a quartz-crystal microbalance. A theoretical analysis is performed on thickness-shear (TSh) vibration of an AT-cut quartz plate with a nonuniform mass layer. Mindlin’s 2-D equation for TSh vibration of a quartz plate is used. An elliptical mass layer with stepped thickness is considered which allows an exact analysis based on the plate equation. Free vibration frequencies and modes are obtained. The effects of the mass layer nonuniformity are examined. Results show that a mass layer thicker at the center tends to confine more modes under the …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Tandem structures can boost the efficiency of organic solar cell to more than 15%, compared to the 10% limit of single layer bulk heterojunction devices. Design and fabricating of intermediate layers plays a very important role to achieve high device performance. This article will review the main experimental progresses of tandem organic solar cells, and focus on the intermediate layers (charge recombination layers) in both thermal evaporated and solution processed organic tandem solar cell devices.

A Model Of Giant Vacuole Dynamics In Human Schlemm’S Canal Endothelial Cells, Ryan M. Pedrigi, David Simon, Ashley Reed, W. Daniel Stamer, Darryl R. Overby
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Aqueous humour transport across the inner wall endothelium of Schlemm’s canal likely involves flow through giant vacuoles and pores, but the mechanics of how these structures form and how they influence the regulation of intraocular pressure (IOP) are not well understood. In this study, we developed an in vitro model of giant vacuole formation in human Schlemm’s canal endothelial cells (HSCECs) perfused in the basal-to-apical direction (i.e., the direction that flow crosses the inner wall in vivo) under controlled pressure drops (2 or 6 mmHg). The system was mounted on a confocal microscope for time-lapse en face imaging, and cells …

Improved Joining Method For Segmental Prestressed Structures, Ralph Warren Jensen
Improved Joining Method For Segmental Prestressed Structures, Ralph Warren Jensen
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the need for more robust and materially efficient structures, specifically structures that absorb higher levels of energy, can self-erect and which have variable reaction capabilities. These structures can take much higher levels of strain and loading compared to current technologies in reinforced concrete and carbon fiber composites. These structures are made using a novel method of joining segmental elements. A great advantage with this segmental structural system is it's survivability under overloaded conditions. During an impact, or concentrated pressure load, the structure will wrap around the impact zone thereby widely distributing the contact stresses. This function or …

Concentrated solar energy has become the input for an increasing number of experimental and commercial thermal systems over the past 10-15 years [M. Thirugnanasambandam et al., Renewable Sustainable Energy Rev. 14 (2010)]. Recent papers have indicated that the addition of nanoparticles to conventional working fluids (i.e., nanofluids) can improve heat transfer and solar collection [H. Tyagi et al., J. Sol. Energy Eng. 131, 4 (2009); P. E. Phelan et al., Annu. Rev. Heat Transfer 14 (2005)]. This work indicates that power tower solar collectors could benefit from the potential efficiency improvements that arise from using a nanofluid working fluid. A …
Advanced Underwater Vehicle Navigation, M. Jordan Stanway
Advanced Underwater Vehicle Navigation, M. Jordan Stanway
Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports
Underwater vehicles–both manned and unmanned–are critical in our efforts to explore and study the depths of the ocean. Most underwater sensors possess a relatively small field of view; this means they must be carried over large distances to achieve high spatial coverage and resolution. The vast amount of data these sensors collect is much more valuable if the location of the vehicle is precisely known at the time the data is collected. This gives rise to the maxim: The data is only as good as the navigation. Navigation remains a challenging problem for underwater vehicles. Fundamental limitations of sensing technology …

Framework For Cohesive Zone Model Based Multiscale Damage Evolution In A Fatigue Environment, Michael Andrew Thomas
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this research is to develop a framework to track damage evolution in a structural model subjected to a fatigue environment. This framework incorporates a micromechanical approach of continuous damage modeling, where damage in a homogenized representative microstructure is introduced at the continuum scale through the material constitutive matrix. In this research, damage in the representative microstructure is simulated utilizing cohesive zone models (CZM) whose properties are a function of the magnitude of applied stresses and the resulting separation. In order to minimize the mesh dependence of the cohesive zone model an adaptive meshing technique is employed. A …

With the increase in demand for high quality thin gauge metals improvements to control systems that monitor strip characteristics must first be acquired. During the rewinding of sheet metal, little insight is known as to what stresses are attributed to the actual winding process, not simply those induced by the mill. When winding effects become too severe they will alter control system readings, prompting the need for a rapid model that can predict winding effects and filter them from current control systems. This research develops a new method to determine a 4th order Airy function that predicts the 2D stress …

The main objective of this computational study is to investigate the optimum injection and spark parameters for the direct injection spark ignition (DISI) Wankel rotary engine using diesel fuel. Currently only port fuel injected gasoline rotary engines are available in the automotive industry. Compared to reciprocating type engines rotary engine is mechanically simple, less vibrate, have higher power to weight ratio and achieve better performance at high rpm. Due to the inherent low fuel efficiency of rotary engine and increasing gas prices, application of the rotary engine in conventional automobiles is decreasing. This project seeks to introduce DISI technology to …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
A high/variable-order numerical simulation procedure for gas dynamics problems was developed to model steep grading physical phenomena. Higher order resolution was achieved using an orthogonal polynomial Gauss-Lobatto grid, adaptive polynomial refinement and artificial diffusion activated by a pressure switch. The method is designed to be computationally stable, accurate, and capable of resolving discontinuities and steep gradients without the use of one-sided reconstructions or reducing to low-order. Solutions to several benchmark gas-dynamics problems were produced including a shock-tube and a shock-entropy wave interaction. The scheme's 1st-order solution was validated in comparison to a 1st-order Roe scheme solution. Higher-order solutions were shown …

Wind energy is an abundant natural resource that people have been trying to tap in recent decades. More and more wind turbines are being built to solve the world's energy shortage problem. For a wind turbine, power extracted from the wind by the rotor and the torque applied to the wind turbine blades are important issues in the design process. Thus there is a need to predict the performance of wind turbine blades using computer modeling. This work shows the results of a computational fluid dynamic simulation developed to predict the air flow field and associated aerodynamic quantities around the …
Effect Of Material Anomalies On Fatigue Life Of Turbine Disks, Jace A. Carter
Effect Of Material Anomalies On Fatigue Life Of Turbine Disks, Jace A. Carter
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
There is an economic need to extend the fatigue life of turbine engine rotor disks. The probability of failure during the operation life must be quantified as components remain in service beyond their traditional safe-life limit. Fracture mechanics based probabilistic methods are utilized to predict the probability of failure of components containing manufacturing and fatigue anomalies. Total fatigue life is defined in terms of crack initiation and propagation phases. A micromechanical initiation model uses material properties at the micro-scale to characterize the initiation phase, while short and long fatigue-crack growth models predict the crack propagation phase. A Monte Carlo simulation …

In the casting process, regions of shrinkage porosity can be reduced or eliminated through the implementation of taper, or small angled additions of mass on the boundaries of the part design, before risers are placed on the casting. Taper supplements the effect of risers so that a smaller riser volume is necessary to make a casting sound. Typically, taper is determined for a casting by using industry guidelines that were developed for simple two-dimensional simplifications of a complex casting. There is no accepted method of defining taper directly on part geometry aside from using expert opinions to make final decisions …

Vibration Diagnosis Of Elastic Shafts With A Transverse Crack, Cai Zhongyi
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Detection of the shaft crack in a rotating machine is one of the most challenging problems in equipment predictive maintenance. In the available literature, various crack detection methods have been applied to study the dynamic behaviour of a cracked shaft. This study sought to attempt a vibration-based method. Elastic shafts with three different types of transverse cracks, including experimentally-induced fatigue crack, welded shaft crack, and wire-cut crack, were fabricated, and used to analyse the bending stiffness and frequency response in the vertical direction. The results from the cracked shafts were compared with that of an intact shaft. Bending stiffness of …

We report efficient laminated organic photovoltaic device with efficiency approach the optimized device by regular method based on Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The high efficiency is mainly attributed to the formation of a concrete polymer/metal interface mechanically and electrically by the use of electronic-glue, and using the highly conductive and flexible silver film as anode to reduce photovoltage loss and modifying its work function for efficiency hole extraction by ultraviolet/ozone treatment, and the pressure induced crystallization of PCBM.

Patch angioplasty is the most common technique used for the performance of carotid endarterectomy. A large number of patching materials are available for use while new materials are being continuously developed. Surprisingly little is known about the mechanical properties of these materials and how these properties compare with those of the carotid artery wall. Mismatch of the mechanical properties can produce mechanical and hemodynamic effects that may compromise the long-term patency of the endarterectomized arterial segment. The aim of this paper was to systematically evaluate and compare the biaxial mechanical behavior of the most commonly used patching materials. We compared …

Frequency Shifts In Plate Crystal Resonators Induced By Electric, Magnetic, Or Mechanical Fields In Surface Films, Nan Liu, J.S. Yang, Yuantai Hu, Xuedong Chen, Wei Jiang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We study frequency shifts in plate crystal resonators with surface films. The films are multiphysical, including the effects of inertia, stiffness, intrinsic stress, piezoelectric coupling, and piezomagnetic coupling. Mindlin’s two-dimensional equations for a crystal plate with two elastic surface films are generalized to include the multiphysical effects of the films. They are used to study thickness-shear vibrations of a rotated Y-cut quartz plate with initial fields resulting from the mechanical, electric, and magnetic fields in the surface films. Frequency shifts caused by the initial fields are calculated and examined. Results show that plate crystal resonators with multiphysical surface films may …

We study a few transient effects of AT-cut quartz thickness-shear resonators, including resonator turning on and turning off as well as voltage amplitude and frequency fluctuations. Mindlin’s two-dimensional plate equations are used and solved analytically. Both a sudden change and a gradual change of the driving voltage are studied. It is found that for a resonator with a frequency of 1.649430868 MHz and material quality factor of Q = 105, the characteristic time scale of the transient effects is of the order of 0.1 s.

Production of ethyl dodecanoate (biodiesel) using lauric acid and methanol with a solid acid catalyst of sulfated zirconia is studied by using two distillation sequences. In the first sequence, the methanol recovery column follows the reactive distillation column. In the second sequence, the reactive distillation and methanol recovery columns are thermally coupled. Thermally coupled distillation sequences may consume less energy by allowing interconnecting vapor and liquid streams between the two columns to elminate reboiler or condenser or both. Here we study the thermally coupled side-stripper reactive distillation and eliminate the condenser of the reactive distillation column. Both the sequences are …

An optical cell is described for high-throughput backscattering Raman spectroscopic measurements of hydrogen storagematerials at pressures up to 10 MPa and temperatures up to 823 K. High throughput is obtained by employing a 60 mm diameter × 9 mm thick sapphire window, with a corresponding 50 mm diameter unobstructed optical aperture. To reproducibly seal this relatively large window to the cell body at elevated temperatures and pressures, a gold o-ring is employed. The sample holder-to-window distance is adjustable, making this cell design compatible with optical measurement systems incorporating lenses of significantly different focal lengths, e.g., microscope objectives and single element …

Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.
