Comparative Modeling Of Performance Limits Of Solid State Neutron Detectors Based On Planar B-Rich Capture Layers, A. D. Harken, Brian W. Robertson Jan 2006

Comparative Modeling Of Performance Limits Of Solid State Neutron Detectors Based On Planar B-Rich Capture Layers, A. D. Harken, Brian W. Robertson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Solid-state neutron detectors based only on boron-rich semiconductors are of interest for their potential to provide the highest thermal neutron detection efficiencies of any solid-state neutron detectors. A simple physical model, recently shown to generate thermal neutron capture product spectra that agree quantitatively with full-physics GEANT4 simulation, is used to compare the capture product energy spectra and the upper limits to neutron detection efficiency of planar conversion layer, sandwich and all-boron-carbide detectors for the case of normally incident, mono-energetic, thermal neutrons. All-boron-carbide semiconductor detectors are deduced to be greatly superior to all other boron-rich solid-state detector types in their maximal …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Background: Posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a common cause of foot pain and dysfunction in adults. Clinical observations strongly suggest that the condition is progressive. There are currently no controlled studies evaluating the effectiveness of exercise, orthoses, or orthoses and exercise on Stage I or IIA PTTD. Our study will explore the effectiveness of an eccentric versus concentric strengthening intervention to results obtained with the use of orthoses alone. Findings from this study will guide the development of more efficacious PTTD intervention programs and contribute to enhanced function and quality of life in persons with posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction. …

Recent Development In The Weibull Stress Model For Prediction Of Cleavage Fracture In Ferritic Steels, Xiaosheng Gao, Robert H. Dodds Jr. Jan 2006

Recent Development In The Weibull Stress Model For Prediction Of Cleavage Fracture In Ferritic Steels, Xiaosheng Gao, Robert H. Dodds Jr.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

This paper reviews recent developments in the Weibull stress model for prediction of cleavage fracture in ferritic steels. The procedure to calibrate the Weibull stress parameters builds upon the toughness scaling model between two crack configurations having different constraint levels and eliminates the recently discovered non-uniqueness that arises in calibrations using only fracture toughness data obtained under small scale yielding (SSY) conditions. The introduction of a non-zero threshold value for Weibull stress in the expression for cumulative failure probability is consistent with the experimental observations that there exists a minimum toughness value for cleavage fracture in ferritic steels, and brings …

Annular Beam Shaping And Optical Trepanning, Danyong Zeng Jan 2006

Annular Beam Shaping And Optical Trepanning, Danyong Zeng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Percussion drilling and trepanning are two laser drilling methods. Percussion drilling is accomplished by focusing the laser beam to approximately the required diameter of the hole, exposing the material to one or a series of laser pulses at the same spot to melt and vaporize the material. Drilling by trepanning involves cutting a hole by rotating a laser beam with an optical element or an x–y galvo-scanner. Optical trepanning is a new laser drilling method using an annular beam. The annular beams allow numerous irradiance profiles to supply laser energy to the workpiece and thus provide more flexibility in affecting …

Study Of Discharge Coefficient And Trends In Film Cooling Effectiveness Of Conical Holes With Increasing Diffusion Angles, Humberto Zuniga, Jan 2006

Study Of Discharge Coefficient And Trends In Film Cooling Effectiveness Of Conical Holes With Increasing Diffusion Angles, Humberto Zuniga,

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies indicate that increasing the diffusion angle in conical film-cooling holes leads to an improvement in their film cooling effectiveness. Discharge coefficient and film cooling effectiveness measurements are conducted to characterize this behavior. Part of the focus of this investigation is to find out how this trend develops and attempt to ascertain the optimum cone angle, if possible. Six test plates, each with one row of eight conical-shaped cooling holes of equal diffusion angles of 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, or 8 [degrees], with respect to the hole axis are used in this study. The ratios of the hole …

Efficient Large Scale Transient Heat Conduction Analysis Using A Parallelized Boundary Element Method, Kevin Erhart Jan 2006

Efficient Large Scale Transient Heat Conduction Analysis Using A Parallelized Boundary Element Method, Kevin Erhart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A parallel domain decomposition Laplace transform Boundary Element Method, BEM, algorithm for the solution of large-scale transient heat conduction problems will be developed. This is accomplished by building on previous work by the author and including several new additions (most note-worthy is the extension to 3-D) aimed at extending the scope and improving the efficiency of this technique for large-scale problems. A Laplace transform method is utilized to avoid time marching and a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, POD, interpolation scheme is used to improve the efficiency of the numerical Laplace inversion process. A detailed analysis of the Stehfest Transform (numerical Laplace …

Neural Network-Based Output Feedback Controller For Lean Operation Of Spark Ignition Engines, Brian C. Kaul, Jagannathan Sarangapani, J. A. Drallmeier, Jonathan B. Vance, Pingan He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Spark ignition (SI) engines running at very lean conditions demonstrate significant nonlinear behavior by exhibiting cycle-to-cycle dispersion of heat release even though such operation can significantly reduce NOx emissions and improve fuel efficiency by as much as 5-10%. A suite of neural network (NN) controller without and with reinforcement learning employing output feedback has shown ability to reduce the nonlinear cyclic dispersion observed under lean operating conditions. The neural network controllers consists of three NN: a) A NN observer to estimate the states of the engine such as total fuel and air; b) a second NN for generating virtual input; …

Creating Cross-Over Vehicles: Defining And Combining Vehicle Classes Using Shape Grammars, Seth D. Orsborn, R. Pawlicki, R. Smith, Jonathan Cagan Jan 2006

Creating Cross-Over Vehicles: Defining And Combining Vehicle Classes Using Shape Grammars, Seth D. Orsborn, R. Pawlicki, R. Smith, Jonathan Cagan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the push for new vehicle designs, the distinctions between vehicle classes are quickly becoming blurred. We use shape grammars to quantify the differences between vehicle classes through the application of class-specific rules and the constraint of rule applications to within parametric ranges determined for each class. This allows for the development of new vehicle forms that clearly fall within a class or purposefully cross over the boundaries of classes and mix rules and ranges to create unique and interesting cross-over vehicles.

Effects Of Current On Droplet Generation And Arc Plasma In Gas Metal Arc Welding, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai Jan 2006

Effects Of Current On Droplet Generation And Arc Plasma In Gas Metal Arc Welding, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), a technology using pulsed currents has been employed to achieve the one-droplet-per-pulse (ODPP) metal transfer mode with the advantages of low average currents, a stable and controllable droplet generation, and reduced spatter. In this paper, a comprehensive model was developed to study the effects of different current profiles on the droplet formation, plasma generation, metal transfer, and weld pool dynamics in GMAW. Five types of welding currents were studied, including two constant currents and three wave form currents. In each type, the transient temperature and velocity distributions of the arc plasma and the molten …

Neural Network Control Of Spark Ignition Engines With High Egr Levels, A. Singh, Brian C. Kaul, J. A. Drallmeier, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Jonathan B. Vance Jan 2006

Neural Network Control Of Spark Ignition Engines With High Egr Levels, A. Singh, Brian C. Kaul, J. A. Drallmeier, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Jonathan B. Vance

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research has shown substantial reductions in the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) concentrations by using 10% to 25% exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in spark ignition (SI) engines [1]. However under high EGR levels the engine exhibits strong cyclic dispersion in heat release which may lead to instability and unsatisfactory performance. A suite of neural network (NN)-based output feedback controllers with and without reinforcement learning is developed to control the SI engine at high levels of EGR even when the engine dynamics are unknown by using fuel as the control input. A separate control loop was designed for controlling EGR levels. The …

Neuroadaptive Model Following Controller Design For A Nonaffine Uav Model, Nishant Unnikrishnan, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

Neuroadaptive Model Following Controller Design For A Nonaffine Uav Model, Nishant Unnikrishnan, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new model-following adaptive control design technique for nonlinear systems that are nonaffine in control. The adaptive controller uses online neural networks that guarantee tracking in the presence of unmodeled dynamics and/or parameter uncertainties present in the system model through an online control adaptation procedure. The controller design is carried out in two steps: (i) synthesis of a set of neural networks which capture the unmodeled (neglected) dynamics or model uncertainties due to parametric variations and (ii) synthesis of a controller that drives the state of the actual plant to that of a reference model. This method …

A Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos Method For Uncertainty Propagation In Cfd Simulations, Serhat Hosder, R. Perez, Robert W. Walters Jan 2006

A Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos Method For Uncertainty Propagation In Cfd Simulations, Serhat Hosder, R. Perez, Robert W. Walters

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An inexpensive non-intrusive polynomial chaos (NIPC) method for the propagation of input uncertainty in CFD simulations is presented. The method is straightforward to implement for any stochastic fluid dynamics problem and computationally less expensive than sampling or quadrature based non-intrusive methods. To validate the present NIPC approach, the method has been applied to: (1) an inviscid oblique shock wave problem with geometric uncertainty, (2) an inviscid expansion wave problem with geometric uncertainty, and (3) a subsonic, two-dimensional, laminar boundary layer flow over a flat plate with an uncertain free-stream dynamic viscosity. For all test cases, the statistics (mean and the …

Automated Adaptive Data Center Generation For Meshless Methods, Eric Mitteff Jan 2006

Automated Adaptive Data Center Generation For Meshless Methods, Eric Mitteff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Meshless methods have recently received much attention but are yet to reach their full potential as the required problem setup (i.e. collocation point distribution) is still significant and far from automated. The distribution of points still closely resembles the nodes of finite volume-type meshes and the free parameter, c, of the radial-basis expansion functions (RBF) still must be tailored specifically to a problem. The localized meshless collocation method investigated requires a local influence region, or topology, used as the expansion medium to produce the required field derivatives. Tests have shown a regular cartesian point distribution produces optimal results, however, in …

The work presented in this thesis deals with the application of optimization tools to the design of solid rocket motor grains per internal ballistic requirements. Research concentrated on the development of an optimization strategy capable of efficiently and consistently optimizing virtually an unlimited range of radial burning solid rocket motor grain geometries. Optimization tools were applied to the design process of solid rocket motor grains through an optimization framework developed to interface optimization tools with the solid rocket motor design system. This was done within a programming architecture common to the grain design system, AML. This commonality in conjunction with …

Driver-Gas Tailoring For Test-Time Extension Using Unconventional Driver Mixtures, Anthony Amadio Jan 2006

Driver-Gas Tailoring For Test-Time Extension Using Unconventional Driver Mixtures, Anthony Amadio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To study combustion chemistry at low temperatures in a shock tube, it is of great importance to increase experimental test times, and this can be done by tailoring the interface between the driver and driven gases. Using unconventional driver-gas tailoring with the assistance of tailoring curves, shock-tube test times were increased from 1 to 15 ms for reflected-shock temperatures below 1000 K. Provided in this thesis is the introduction of tailoring curves, produced from a 1-D perfect gas model for a wide range of driver gases and the production and demonstration of successful driver mixtures containing helium combined with either …

Study Of Low Speed Transitional Regime Gas Flows In Microchannels Using Information Preservation (Ip) Method, Umit Kursun Jan 2006

Study Of Low Speed Transitional Regime Gas Flows In Microchannels Using Information Preservation (Ip) Method, Umit Kursun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proper design of thermal management solutions for future nano-scale electronics or photonics will require knowledge of flow and transport through micron-scale ducts. As in the macro-scale conventional counterparts, such micron-scale flow systems would require robust simulation tools for early-stage design iterations. It can be envisioned that an ideal Nanoscale thermal management (NSTM) solution will involve two-phase flow, liquid flow and gas flow. This study focuses on numerical simulation gas flow in microchannels as a fundamental thermal management technique in any future NSTM solution. A wellknown particle-based method, Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) is selected as the simulation tool. Unlike continuum …

Regulation Of Powder Mass Flow Rate In Gravity-Fed Powder Feeder Systems, Vishnu Thayalan, Robert G. Landers Jan 2006

Regulation Of Powder Mass Flow Rate In Gravity-Fed Powder Feeder Systems, Vishnu Thayalan, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Precise regulation of powder mass flow in laser-based manufacturing processes is critical to achieving excellent part dimensional and microstructure quality. Control of powder mass flow is challenging because low flow rates, where nonlinear effects are significant, are typically required. Also, gravity-fed powder feeder systems have significant material transport delays, making the control of powder mass flow even more challenging. This paper presents a control strategy for regulating the powder mass flow rate in a gravity-fed powder feeder system. A dynamic model of the powder feeder system, including material transport delay, is constructed, and a modified proportional plus integral (PI) controller …

Statistically Steady Measurements Of Rayleigh-Taylor Mixing In A Gas Channel, Malcolm J. Andrews, Arindam Banerjee Jan 2006

Statistically Steady Measurements Of Rayleigh-Taylor Mixing In A Gas Channel, Malcolm J. Andrews, Arindam Banerjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel gas channel experiment is described to study the development of high Atwood number Rayleigh-Taylor mixing. Two gas streams, one containing air and the other containing a helium-air mixture, flow parallel to each other separated by a thin splitter plate. The streams meet at the end of a splitter plate leading to the formation of an unstable interface and of buoyancy driven mixing. This buoyancy driven mixing experiment allows for long data collection times, has short transients, and is statistically steady. The facility was designed to be capable of large Atwood number studies (At~0.75). We describe initial validation work …

An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Combining the principles of dynamic inversion and optimization theory, a new approach is presented for stable control of a class of one-dimensional nonlinear distributed parameter systems, assuming the availability a continuous actuator in the spatial domain. Unlike the existing approximate-then-design and design-then-approximate techniques, here there is no need of any approximation either of the system dynamics or of the resulting controller. Rather, the control synthesis approach is fairly straight-forward and simple. The controller formulation has more elegance because we can prove the convergence of the controller to its steady state value. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed technique, a …

Magnetically Filtered Faraday Probe For Measuring The Ion Current Density Profile Of A Hall Thruster., Joshua L. Rovey, Mitchell L. R. Walker, Alec D. Gallimore, Peter Y. Peterson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ability of a magnetically filtered Faraday probe (MFFP) to obtain the ion current density profile of a Hall thruster is investigated. The MFFP is designed to eliminate the collection of low-energy, charge-exchange (CEX) ions by using a variable magnetic field as an ion filter. In this study, a MFFP, Faraday probe with a reduced acceptance angle (BFP), and nude Faraday probe are used to measure the ion current density profile of a 5 kW Hall thruster operating over the range of 300-500 V and 5-10 mg/s. The probes are evaluated on a xenon propellant Hall thruster in the University …

Robust/Optimal Temperature Profile Control Using Neural Networks, Vivek Yadav, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

Robust/Optimal Temperature Profile Control Using Neural Networks, Vivek Yadav, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approximate dynamic programming (ADP) based neurocontroller is developed for a heat transfer application. Heat transfer problem for a fin in a car''s electronic module is modeled as a nonlinear distributed parameter (infinite-dimensional) system by taking into account heat loss and generation due to conduction, convection and radiation. A low-order, finite-dimensional lumped parameter model for this problem is obtained by using Galerkin projection and basis functions designed through the `Proper Orthogonal Decomposition'' technique (POD) and the `snap-shot'' solutions. A suboptimal neurocontroller is obtained with a single-network-adaptivecritic (SNAC). Further contribution of this paper is to develop an online robust controller to …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modern product design is a very complicated process which involves groups of designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and customer representatives. Conflicts are unavoidable in collaboration among multiple stakeholders, who have different objectives, requirements, and priorities. Unfortunately, current web-based collaborative engineering design systems do not support collaborative conflict resolution. In this paper, we will develop an intelligent computational argumentation model to enable management of a large scale argumentation network, and resolution of conflicts based on argumentation from many participants. A web-based intelligent argumentation tool is developed as a part of a web-based collaborative engineering design system based on the above model to resolve …

The Role Of Electrospinning In The Emerging Field Of Nanomedicine, S. Y. Chew, Y. Wen, Yuris A. Dzenis, K. W. Leong

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The fact that in vivo the extracellular matrix or substratum with which cells interact often includes topography at the nanoscale underscores the importance of investigating cell-substrate interactions and performing cell culture at the submicron scale. An important and exciting direction of research in nanomedicine would be to gain an understanding and exploit the cellular response to nanostructures. Electrospinning is a simple and versatile technique that can produce a macroporous scaffold comprising randomly oriented or aligned nanofibers. It can also accommodate the incorporation of drug delivery function into the fibrous scaffold. Endowed with both topographical and biochemical signals such electrospun nanofibrous …

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC program of the National Science Foundation under Award Number DMR-0079996. Microstructure controls the properties of most useful materials. Thus an ability to control microstructure through the processing of materials is a key to optimization of materials performance. Most materials are polycrystalline and their grain structure is a very important aspect of their microstructure. Thanks to their complexity there is a great variety of grain boundary types even in relatively isotropic materials such as the cubic metals. Simply describing the crystallography requires five (macroscopic) parameters (e.g. disorientation and inclination). Evidently, acquiring a knowledge …

Extending Taylor Plasticity Theory For Microscopic Slip Transfer Conditions, Brent L. Adams, Ray M. Merrill, John A. Basinger, Bassem S. El-Dasher Jan 2006

Extending Taylor Plasticity Theory For Microscopic Slip Transfer Conditions, Brent L. Adams, Ray M. Merrill, John A. Basinger, Bassem S. El-Dasher

Faculty Publications

This work was supported primarily by the MRSEC Program of the National Science Foundation under DMR-0079996. Most studies in crystal plasticity are based upon Taylor's original 1938 work. Within Taylor's framework the dependence of yield strength on microstructure, beyond lattice orientation, is carried within the critical resolved shear stress for slip. Thus, as the grain size decreases, the critical resolved shear stress is required to increase. This increase in critical resolved shear stress is applied, uniformly across the entire interior of the slipping grains according to the basic assumption of the model (uniform plastic strain or strain rate). It is …

Virtual Prototype Of Shuttle Bay Door, Nick Harrington, Raphael Schulz, Pierre Chapron Jan 2006

Virtual Prototype Of Shuttle Bay Door, Nick Harrington, Raphael Schulz, Pierre Chapron

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study analyzed the motion of the Space Shuttle free floating in space after one of its bay doors is opened and closed. Kane's method and Autolev motion simulation software were used to carry out simulation and analysis. The Space Shuttle has two large bay doors that open simultaneously, but for our study we analyzed a hypothetical situation, in which only one door functioned properly, in order to achieve amplified results. To model this system we used a rigid body to resemble the Shuttle and an attached rotating flap to resemble the door. Since the Shuttle is free floating in …

Dynamical Multi-Body Gyroscopic Motion Simulation, Andy Ries, Johnathan Deppe Jan 2006

Dynamical Multi-Body Gyroscopic Motion Simulation, Andy Ries, Johnathan Deppe

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper, the motion of a three-degree-of-freedom gyro scope is analyzed in three different force scenarios. The equations of motion for the gyroscope are derived by hand as well as derived by the dynamical analysis software, Autolev These equations are compared with each other to show the consistency between the two methods and the time savings of using software applications for analyzing complex multi-body dynamical systems. The Autolev™ program drastically reduced the workload for determining the motion equations and the program even compiled Matlab code that was used to produce numerical values to show the respective motion of each …

Optimal Management Of Beaver Population Using A Reduced-Order Distributed Parameter Model And Single Network Adaptive Critics, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

Optimal Management Of Beaver Population Using A Reduced-Order Distributed Parameter Model And Single Network Adaptive Critics, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Beavers are often found to be in conflict with human interests by creating nuisances like building dams on flowing water (leading to flooding), blocking irrigation canals, cutting down timbers, etc. At the same time they contribute to raising water tables, increased vegetation, etc. Consequently, maintaining an optimal beaver population is beneficial. Because of their diffusion externality (due to migratory nature), strategies based on lumped parameter models are often ineffective. Using a distributed parameter model for beaver population that accounts for their spatial and temporal behavior, an optimal control (trapping) strategy is presented in this paper that leads to a desired …
