Art To Engineering: Curved Folding And Developable Surfaces In Mechanism And Deployable Structure Design, Todd G. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates how curved-crease origami and the developable surfaces which compose it can be transitioned to engineering design. Methods for creating flexible, tailorable-property surfaces that function as thick panels in place of paper are presented. Concepts from curved-crease origami and developable surfaces that can describe and extend engineering applications are discussed and demonstrated. These concepts are particularly beneficial to applications where curved surfaces are integral to the function, deployability is desired, and planar manufacturing could be beneficial. The first part of this work uses arrays of compliant elements to create flexible-tailorable property surfaces. The key feature to these arrays is …
Cost Model Evaluation For Large Scale Additive Manufacturing, Andrea Piazza
Cost Model Evaluation For Large Scale Additive Manufacturing, Andrea Piazza
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) is becoming a valuable option in medium to large scale manufacturing operations, due to the increasing technological advances and popularization of different techniques. Product development assembly costs can be greatly reduced with additive manufacturing, producing directly consumer-usable parts without the need of always rising labor costs. Entry level companies can bridge the gap between Tier 1 suppliers and Research & Development (R&D) businesses by utilizing the lower capital and reoccurring costs of modern additive manufacturing techniques, thereby avoiding the necessity for retooling and specialized machinery. The following study both explores the advantages and quantifies the cost factors, …
Augmented Design Capabilities For Origami Tessellations, Janette Darlene Herron
Augmented Design Capabilities For Origami Tessellations, Janette Darlene Herron
Theses and Dissertations
Applying engineering principles to tessellation origami-based designs enables the control of certain design properties, such as flexibility, bending stiffness, mechanical advantage, shape conformance, and deployment motion. The ability to control these and other properties will enable augmented design capabilities in environments which currently limit the design to specific materials, including space, medicine, harsh environments, and scaled environments (such as MEMS applications). Other applications will be able to achieve more complex motions or better satisfy design and performance requirements. This research demonstrates augmented design capabilities of origami tessellations in engineering design in rigid-foldable and non-rigid-foldable applications. First, a method to determine Poisson's …
Perovskite Solar Cells Fabricated Via Scalable Dip Coating Methods, Joseph F. Iannello
Perovskite Solar Cells Fabricated Via Scalable Dip Coating Methods, Joseph F. Iannello
Theses and Dissertations
Perovskite solar cells present the possibility for less expensive electricity generation, through the use of low cost materials and fabrication methods relative to current silicon-based technology. Many current methods of fabricating thin film perovskite solar cells focus on spin-coating, which inherently lacks scalability due to particle conglomeration, poor uniformity over a larger area, and safety concerns. Dip-coating, an alternative to spin-coating, which is explored here addresses these issues which limit scalability. Each individual layer can be separately synthesized, deposited, and characterized, which leads towards scalability. Choosing only the best results from each independent layer allowed progress to the creation of …

Kinematic Analysis Of Spinal Cord Injury Animals Treated With A Neurotrophin-Infused Scaffold And Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training, Alexander Herman
Theses and Dissertations
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a condition that affects around 250,000 Americans with no cure. Existing treatments rely on physical therapies such as body weight support treadmill training (BWSTT). Treatments currently being researched include the use of implantable cells and biomaterials. Our study investigated the changes in locomotive gait and range of motion via a combinational treatment using a bioengineered scaffold [poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) polyethylene glycol (PNIPAAm-g-PEG) with BDNF and NT-3] and rehabilitation training using BWSTT in a clinically relevant contusion SCI animal model. Five different groups of animals (Sham, Injury, BWSTT, Implant, and Combinational) were tested on a treadmill …
Thermal Fluid Models Of A Hydrogel Delivery System For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment, Nesrine Bouhrira
Thermal Fluid Models Of A Hydrogel Delivery System For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment, Nesrine Bouhrira
Theses and Dissertations
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most devastating cancers with low survival rates. This disease is difficult to detect due to the pancreas's location deep within the body. Therefore, diagnoses are often made in the later stages, making treatment options more limited and difficult. It has been hypothesized that direct injection into the tumor would enhance drug effectivenes. Therefore, we examined the use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) combined with a fine needle injection to deliver a drug-eluding thermosensitive hydrogel directly into the tumor. Unfortunately normal body temperatures surrounding the EUS can warm the hydrogel drug combination beyond its phase transition …
Effect Of Cavitation Regimes On Stepped Diesel Injectors, David Michael Sykes
Effect Of Cavitation Regimes On Stepped Diesel Injectors, David Michael Sykes
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this work was to determine the effects of different cavitating flow regimes on a stepped orifice geometry relevant to diesel injectors. Conventional diesel orifice geometries consist of a single tapered or straight circular passage. The geometry used in this work had two circular passages in series: a first orifice that was similar to conventional geometries and a second larger orifice immediately downstream that induced cavitation. The large orifice served to stabilize the flow, allowing for different flow regimes to exist at the exit plane of the large orifice (single-phase, intermittent bubbly, bubbly, annular, etc.). A series of …

Cfd Analysis Of Resistance For Stepless And Stepped Planing Hulls, Bhanu Prakash Valtheru
Theses and Dissertations
It is the endeavour of naval architects to design hull forms with the least amount of power consumption. In this respect, Naval Architects have been obsessed with the design of various hull forms optimized for a particular service requiring the lowest amount of fuel consumption keeping in mind effects on the climate change and sustainability. Regardless of the way that a considerable measure of research has been done around this area, there remains a level of uncertainty in the reasonably accurate resistance prediction of stepped hull forms in the early design stage. Model tests and full-scale tests are still the …

Superharmonic Resonance Of Second Order For Electrostatically Actuated Mems Cantilevers, Martin Amador Botello
Theses and Dissertations
The nonlinear dynamics of electrostatically actuated micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) cantilever resonators are investigated. The applied Alternating Current (AC) voltage is in the realm of superharmonic resonance of the second order (near one-fourth of the natural frequency of the resonator) and hard excitations. Method of Multiple Scales (MMS) and Reduced Order Models (ROMs) are used to solve the dimensionless partial differential equation (PDE) of motion along with boundary and initial conditions. MMS transforms the PDE of motion into zero-order and first-order problems. ROMs uses mode shapes of vibration for undamped cantilever resonator as a basis of functions. ROM is …

The Effect Of Heat Generation In The Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element On The Thermal Behavior Of Railroad Bearing Assembly, Oscar Osvaldo Rodriguez
The Effect Of Heat Generation In The Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element On The Thermal Behavior Of Railroad Bearing Assembly, Oscar Osvaldo Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the internal heat generation of the railroad bearing elastomer suspension element during operation is essential to predict its dynamic response and structural integrity, as well as to predict the thermal behavior of the complete railroad bearing assembly including the bearing adapter. The latter is essential for sensor selection and placement within the adapter (e.g., typical temperature sensors have operating ranges of up to 125°C or 257°F). The internal heat generation is a function of the loss modulus, strain, and frequency. Based on experimental studies, estimations of internally generated heat within the thermoplastic elastomer pad were obtained. The calculations show …

The Use Of Mixed Organic/Ionic Liquid Electrolytes With Forcespun Metal Oxides/Carbon Microfiber Electrodes In Lithium Ion Batteries, Jahaziel Villarreal
Theses and Dissertations
Conventional Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) electrolytes have serious safety concerns because of highly flammability. In order to mitigate this drawback, alternative electrolytes with low volatility and non-flammable need to be synthesis. Ionic liquids (ILs) and mixed organic ionic liquid electrolytes (MOILEs) are the most suitable replacement for the highly flammable commercial organic electrolytes. In this academic investigation, a new perspective on the electrochemical performance of the ionic liquid EMI-TFSI as an alternate non-flammable electrolyte. In parallel, the use of Forcespun nanofibers as binder-free anodes will be analyzed to further improve overall electrochemical performance.
Design And Optimization Of A Passive Magnetic Thrust Bearing, Thomas Matthew Lasko
Design And Optimization Of A Passive Magnetic Thrust Bearing, Thomas Matthew Lasko
Theses and Dissertations
High-speed turbomachines present a number of unique challenges and problems. Large centrifugal forces create high stresses in rotating components, friction leads to elevated temperatures and component failure, and rotordynamic instability makes control difficult. The weak link in these high-speed systems is often the bearings because they provide the interface between the rotating and stationary components. Traditional bearings often fail in these conditions, especially when relatively large force capacities are required. In miniature gas turbines for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications, traditional bearings exhibit a typical lifetime of only 25 hours due to excessive axial loading. This research presents a passive …
Optimization Of Chemical Kinetic Mechanism For Efficient Computation Of Combustion Process In Advanced Internal Combustion Engine Configurations, Muzammil Arshad
Optimization Of Chemical Kinetic Mechanism For Efficient Computation Of Combustion Process In Advanced Internal Combustion Engine Configurations, Muzammil Arshad
Theses and Dissertations
For the development and optimization of future fuels and automotive engines, computer modeling and simulation has proved itself as an inseparable, efficient and cost effective tool to experimental studies. The traditional reliance of computer models on simplified global reaction steps to simulate the combustion and engine performance parameters, such as in-cylinder pressure, heat release rate and pollutant formation could reduce credibility of the predictions as the global reaction steps depend on arbitrary adjustment of model parameters. This study has incorporated detailed chemistry by augmenting the combustion model of a three dimensional unsteady compressible turbulent Navier-Stokes solver with liquid spray injection …
Development Of Recyclability Index: A Design For Assembly And Disassembly Approach, Darshan Yadav
Development Of Recyclability Index: A Design For Assembly And Disassembly Approach, Darshan Yadav
Theses and Dissertations
Designing products for recyclability is driven by environmental and economic goals. Several Design for Assembly(DFA) rules and parameters can be used to gauge the recyclability index of product designs. These indices can be used for comparative analysis of the recyclability of different products. This assists the designer in making design choices related to the product’s end of life. However, many of the existing recyclability indices are only available after design and manufacturing decisions are made. If such design decisions could be made earlier in the design process, when the design space is less bound, recyclability could be considered earlier. A …
Adaptive Control For Inflatable Soft Robotic Manipulators With Unknown Payloads, Jonathan Spencer Terry
Adaptive Control For Inflatable Soft Robotic Manipulators With Unknown Payloads, Jonathan Spencer Terry
Theses and Dissertations
Soft robotic platforms are becoming increasingly popular as they are generally safer, lighter, and easier to manufacture than their more rigid, heavy, traditional counterparts. These soft platforms, while inherently safer, come with significant drawbacks. Their compliant components are more difficult to model, and their underdamped nature makes them difficult to control. Additionally, they are so lightweight that a payload of just a few pounds has a significant impact on the manipulator dynamics. This thesis presents novel methods for addressing these issues. In previous research, Model Predictive Control has been demonstrably useful for joint angle control for these soft robots, using …
A Definition And Demonstration Of Developable Mechanisms, Trent Karl Zimmerman
A Definition And Demonstration Of Developable Mechanisms, Trent Karl Zimmerman
Theses and Dissertations
There is an increasing need for compact mechanical systems that can accomplish sophisticated tasks. Technologies like ortho-planar and lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs) have been developed to satisfy needs like these by stowing in planar sheets from which they emerge to perform their function. They can be compact, lightweight, monolithic, scalable, and can withstand harsh environments. They are limited, however, by their base element---planar surfaces. Applications requiring these advantages often include curved surfaces, like aircraft wings, needles, and automotive bodies. In this research, developable mechanisms are presented as a solution to satisfy the need for mechanisms that can conform to or …

Multimodal Fusion Detection System For Autonomous Vehicles, Michael Person
Multimodal Fusion Detection System For Autonomous Vehicles, Michael Person
Theses and Dissertations
In order for autonomous vehicles to safely navigate the road ways, accurate object detection must take place before safe path planning can occur. Currently there is a gap between models that are fast enough and models that are accurate enough for deployment. We propose Multimodal Fusion Detection System (MDFS), a sensor fusion system that combines the speed of a fast image detection CNN model along with the accuracy of a LiDAR point cloud data through a decision tree approach. The primary objective is to bridge the trade-off between performance and accuracy. The motivation for MDFS is to reduce the computational …
Using Collapsible Systems To Mitigate Buckling In Thin Flexible Instruments In Robotic Surgery, Brandon Scott Sargent
Using Collapsible Systems To Mitigate Buckling In Thin Flexible Instruments In Robotic Surgery, Brandon Scott Sargent
Theses and Dissertations
Robotic surgery procedures may include long, thin flexible instruments that are inserted by the robot into the patient. As the robot inserts these devices, due to their geometry, they are prone to buckling failure. To mitigate buckling failure, a support system is needed on the robot. This system supports the device but also adapts to the varying ex vivo length of the device as it is inserted. This work presents four collapsible support systems designed to mitigate buckling failure of long, thin instruments while accounting for changing length. The Ori-Guide is an origami-inspired system that has enabled a part reduction …
Development, Classification And Biomedical Applications Of Nano Composite Piezoresponsive Foam, Aaron Jake Merrell
Development, Classification And Biomedical Applications Of Nano Composite Piezoresponsive Foam, Aaron Jake Merrell
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the development of and applications for Nano-Composite Piezoresponsive Foam (NCPF). This self-sensing foam sensor technology was discovered through research in a sister technology, High Deflection Strain Gauges (HDSG), and was subsequently developed with some of the same base materials. Both technologies use nano and micro conductive additives to provide electrically responsive properties to materials which otherwise are insulative. NCPF sensors differ from HDSGs in that they provide a dual electrical response to dynamic and static loading, which is measured through an internally generated charge, or a change in resistance. This dissertation focuses on the development of …
Quantifying Grain Boundary Atomic Structures Using The Smooth Overlap Of Atomic Positions, Jonathan Lake Priedeman
Quantifying Grain Boundary Atomic Structures Using The Smooth Overlap Of Atomic Positions, Jonathan Lake Priedeman
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, the relationship between grain boundary crystallography and grain boundary atomic structure is examined, using [1 0 0] - symmetric tilt grain boundaries in nickel. The structural unit model is used as a benchmark to evaluate the atomic structure description capacities of an emerging structural descriptor, the local environment representation, which itself is a refinement of the also-emergent Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) descriptor. We show that the local environment representation encodes both the information of the structural unit model and additional information, such as distortion in the structural units and the arrangement of the structural units …

Heterogeneous Templated Grain Growth, Dallin James Frandsen
Theses and Dissertations
Heterogeneous Templated Grain Growth (HTGG) is a developing method to fabricate designedcrystallographic textures of polycrystalline materials. Designed crystallographic texturesare important for enhancing desired material properties for specific applications. Four steps toHTGG have been identified: fabricating single crystal seeds, aligning seeds embedded into a powdermatrix, compacting seeds in the powder matrix, and promoting templating through sintering.Experimental research was performed on processing parameters, powder particle size and compaction,to indicate template coarsening trends during sintering. The results demonstrated thatlarger powder particles were influenced faster by the seeds crystallographic orientations comparedto smaller particles. The local effects of porosity on the seed and powder interface …

Stress Modulated Grain Boundary Mobility, Derek Michael Lontine
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis consists of a thermodynamically based kinetic model that more accurately predicts grain boundary mobility (GBM) over a large range of thermodynamic states including changes in temperature, pressure and shear stress. The form of the model was validated against calculated GBM values for Al bicrystals via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A total of 98,786 simulations were performed (164 different GBs, each with a minimum of 250 different thermodynamic states, and 2 different driving forces). Methodology for the computation of the GBM via MD simulations is provided. The model parameters are directly linked to extensive thermodynamic quantities and suggest potential …
Simulated Tremor Propagation In The Upper Limb: From Muscle Activity To Joint Displacement, Thomas Henry Corie
Simulated Tremor Propagation In The Upper Limb: From Muscle Activity To Joint Displacement, Thomas Henry Corie
Theses and Dissertations
Although tremor is the most common movement disorder, there are few non-invasive treatment options. One of the obstacles to creating effective tremor suppression devices is our lack of understanding regarding where tremor originates (which muscles), how it propagates through the limb (to which degrees of freedom, DOF), and where it manifests most severely (which DOF). To investigate these questions, we created a simple, linear time-invariant model to simulate tremor, with tremorogenic muscle activity input (in the 15 major superficial muscles from the shoulder to the wrist) and joint displacement output (in the 7 major upper limb DOF). The model included …

This research investigated the building energy performance of different parameters over six US climate zones to ascertain which passive and active strategies would be most effective in each climate zone. Six cities were chosen to represent different climate zones. The focus of this study is for the Alumni House at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL to achieve NZE through retrofitting energy efficient measures (EEMs). An implementation of all active and passive strategies, also referred to Energy Efficiency Measures (EEM), …
Effect Of Gyroscope Parameters On Gyroscopic Tremor Suppression In A Single Degree Of Freedom, Brendon Connor Allen
Effect Of Gyroscope Parameters On Gyroscopic Tremor Suppression In A Single Degree Of Freedom, Brendon Connor Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Although tremor is one of the most common movement disorders, there are few effective tremor-suppressing options available to patients. One potential tremor-suppression device involves a wearable gyrostabilizer similar to those used to stabilize cameras. However, we do not currently know how to design a gyrostabilizer to suppress tremor in an optimal manner. To address this gap, we present a systematic investigation of how gyrostabilizer parameters affect tremor suppression in a single degree of freedom (DOF). A simple model of the hand with a single DOF at the wrist and a gyroscope mounted on the back of the hand was used …

Simulation Of The Inertia Friction Welding Process Using A Subscale Specimen And A Friction Stir Welder, Ty Samual Dansie
Theses and Dissertations
This study develops a method to simulate a full-scale inertia friction weld with a sub-scale specimen and modifies a direct drive friction stir welder to perform the welding process. A torque meter is fabricated for the FSW machine to measure weld torque. Machine controls are modified to enable a force control during the IFW process. An equation is created to measure weld upset due to deflection of the FSW machine. Data obtained from a full-scale inertia friction weld are altered to account for the geometrical differences between the sub-scale and full-scale specimens. The IFW are simulated with the sub-scale specimen …
