Forced convection heat transfer in the entrance region of tubes and ducts has been studied extensively since the pioneering work of Graetz. Most of the published solutions for axial flow heat transfer are based on the idealization of either fully established or uniform velocity profiles with developing temperature.

The object of this work was to investigate the effect that heat losses from the "insulated" face of thin foil heat flux meters has upon the sensitivity of heat flux meters. In the past it has been characteristic of any analysis done on heat flux meters to assume that the insulation on the back face of the foil was a perfect insulator and thereby neglect the effects of heat losses from this "insulated" face. The word hysteresis is derived from a Greek word meaning "to lag 'behind". As specifically applied to fluid flow around bodies with transient angles of attack in and near the stall region, "aerodynamic hysteresis" is used to describe the effect of delay in boundary layer separation and reattachment upon the lift, drag and pitching moment. Experimental work done on airfoils by H. Studer showed that for increasing angles of attack flow "separation is delayed to an angle of attack appreciably greater than that for a stationary airfoil. On the return movement, re-establishment of a smooth flow is also delayed." [1]* …

The object of this thesis was to lay a foundation for a comprehensive study of the dynamic response of rotating members. This initial phase of the study includes a theoretical investigation and proposes experimental techniques for the determination of the stresses and strains in a thin, rotating disk with a concentric hole, subjected to transient shaft inputs. There are many practical applications of this problem including computor memory storage disks, turbine rotors, grinding wheels, saw blades, gears, optical reflectors, and solar sails for space vehicles.

The impulse technique is progressively being developed for determining the steady state rate of heat transfer systems involving exponential temperature-time histories. A pulse thermocouple system has been utilized in such a technique having a steady state response time on the order of one time constant of the thermocouple used. When an impulse thermocouple system is not used, the required time in obtaining the steady state value is on the order of five time constants or the time required to reach steady state.

During recent years an increasing number of technical firms and manufacturers have begun to specify heat flux, energy input per unit area per unit time, as a testing and designing criteria. This change in the boundary condition (to heat flux from temperature excess or others) evolved from the idea that each material has a characteristic burning temperature. Therefore, the rate of ablation or burning depends mainly upon the rate of energy input into the specimen, and not its temperature. Thus, the need for a flux measuring device became more acute.

One very important part of research is the development of effective, reliable instruments. The measurement of turbulence in flow fields is a complex research problem. It depends heavily upon the hot-wire anemometer. This thesis describes the evaluation and use of a constant- current hot-wire anemometer, and presents the equations governing its use for turbulence measurements. The thesis first enumerates and explains some of the important parameters of turbulent flows, providing the basis for the discussion of their measurement which follows. The object of this work was to design and build equipment to measure the aerodynamic forces which will cause self-induced oscillations of a body having an unsymmetrical cross-section, such as a D-section. This self-induced oscillation has been called "stall flutter" or in electrical transmission lines, "galloping-transmission lines." Recent progress in structural engineering has been marked by the increased use of thin shells as load carrying members. In particular, shells of revolution have been widely utilized in the missile industry whereas shells of arbitrary shape have been incorporated in the architectural design of today's modern buildings. A literature survey was conducted to determine the factors which affect aerodynamic drag of spheres. Graphs are presented which show the effect of each variable where such information was available. Equipment was designed and built for the purpose of studying the effects of acceleration on the aerodynamic drag of spheres. Special emphasis was placed on the measurement and control of each of the other variables which can affect the drag. The plasma-arc generator (see figure 1, 2) has been used for several years as an invaluable ground test facility in which the gas stagnation properties of hypervelocity flight may be reproduced. The plasma is produced by shorting an electric arc between two electrodes; then directing a gas stream through the arc. The gas stream is thus heated to a ''temperature " of forty to fifty thousand degrees Farenheit. At this temperature the gas is in a state of partial ionization termed "plasma".
