The heat transfer effects on liquid methane are investigated with the use of a carbo-thermal rig at the Center for Space Exploration Technology Research (cSETR) located at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The cSETR carbo-thermal rig design approach is presented along with the design of a methane condensing mobile unit (MCMU) to supply the laboratory and rig with liquid methane. In this study, nanoindentation was used to determine Young's modulus of homogeneous plastic materials as well as inhomogeneous epoxy woven fabric composites using various indenters. In the first part, homogeneous PMMA and polycarbonate were characterized using conical and spherical indenters. The conventional approach of the inverse analysis was modified in order to account for effects obtained during spherical nanoindentation. The experimental results were verified using FEA analysis in ABAQUS. It was found that viscous effects were present in conical nanoindentations which led to an overestimation of contact stiffness. The recent emergence of personal 3D printers (i.e., systems that cost $5,000 or less) has engaged a new class of users including hobbyists, tinkerers, entrepreneurs, and do-it-yourselfers. Over 20,000 personal 3D printers were sold in 2011, and thus there is a need for users to understand the cost and performance of personal 3D printers as compared to low-cost professional-grade machines (i.e., systems that cost between $5,000 and $20,000). The cost, process time, material usage, and dimensional accuracy was assessed for select personal 3D printers and low-cost professional-grade systems. The purpose of this project is to study the thermal-electrical and mechanical properties of the Nanojunctions between Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) and Silicon Carbide (SiC). The mixture was done by spreading the nanoparticles in a solution of ethanol and SiC, then sintered to a solid sample of 10 mm x 10 mm x 35 mm, which was attached with Alumel (Ni-Al) wire using silver epoxy to form a circuit for recording during fracture testing. The carbon nanotubes used were approximately 60% semiconducting and 40% metallic. The themal-electrical effect changed when SWCNTs (at 2, and 5 wt%) were infused into SiC. …

Lithium ion batteries are one of the most popular energy storage devices due to its high energy density. However, their performance is hindered by the limited surface area of the anode. This research focuses on the use of graphene nanowire hybrids and their performance as anode material. These hybrid structures have a greater surface area then graphite, the most common anode material. Greater surface area will enhance lithium ion insertion, and thus improve battery performance. Parallel architectures in computer systems are powerful tools for processing enormous amounts of information. The results of this research will illustrate their optimal usage by evaluating the scalability of the code Abaqus in the cases of domain decomposition and loop parallelization architectures. The scalability was analyzed using concomitant variation having the DoF (Degrees of Freedom) and CPU (Central Processing Unit) numbers as the variables. Abaqus jobs with less than 100,000 DoF showed similar scalability than that of jobs with more than 500,000. These results contradict the original hypothesis which proposed that small jobs would show poor scalability and vice versa. …

Temperature measurements in power generation systems can provide useful information on the performance parameters of the units. This paper presents a conceptual measurement technique using a simulated thermoelectric loop (signal transmitter). The transmitter simulates the induced current and magnetic field emanating from the center of an n and p loop. The receiver used in this study is a Hall Effect sensing device which measures the magnetic flux density produced by the transmitter. The ignition and control systems of a laboratory scale high-pressure gas turbine combustor were developed in the present work. This work provides a detailed description of the design, development and testing of the remote control system developed for a High Pressure Gas Turbine Combustor (HPTC).
The combustor has the capability to operate at pressures up to 1.5 MPa and temperatures up to 2400 K. It is also designed for a maximum air and fuel flow rates of 81.93 g/s and 35.77 g/s respectively. The fuel used will be CH4 for the early experiments but it is designed to operate using …

Potable water is becoming a scarce resource in many arid regions of the world. An experimental unit was designed and constructed to examine and characterize the production capabilities of a humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination process. An HDH cycle offers a viable, technologically light, alternative for producing fresh water from brackish water because the low relative humidity air is infused with water vapor through evaporation by means of conventional heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) components. The evaporation process effectively separates salts and suspended solids from the brackish feed-water. Desalinated water is subsequently recovered by extracting the water vapor from the moist …

This work describes the development and preliminary testing of a thrust measurement system, in combination with a propellant feed and automation controls systems to test the performance of 8.9 to 35.6 N (2 to 8 lbf) LOX/Methane reaction control thrusters. LOX/LCH4 has come to be the main focus of next generation "green" propellants for future space exploration. Over the last three decades, developments within the area of Additive Manufacturing (AM) have resulted in novel technologies capable of producing highly customized, complex part geometries in a fraction of the lead time required by traditional manufacturing methods (e.g., injection molding, metal casting). In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM), a material extrusion AM process, can produce parts using production-grade thermoplastics like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polycarbonate, and polyetherimide. Additionally, non-commercial materials (e.g., polycaprolactone, ceramic loaded polymers, carbon nanotube loaded polymers) have been processed using FDM in part to demonstrate the potential diversity in material selection.
