A Variational Approach To Non-Newtonian Flow In Angular Pores: An Application To Enchanced Oil Recovery, Nithin Kavoori
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With an alarming rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from anthropogenic sources, CO2 sequestration has become an attractive choice to mitigate the emission. Some popular storage media for CO2 are oil reservoirs, deep coal-bed, deep oceanic-beds. These have been used for the long term CO2 storage. Due to special lowering viscosity and surface tension property of CO2, it has been widely used for enhanced oil recovery. The sites for CO2 sequestration or enhanced oil recovery mostly consist of porous rocks. In this thesis work, I focus on understanding the flow through porous at pore-level using variational approach.
Variational approach is …
Computational Study Of Fluid-Valve Interaction Involving Deep Vein Thrombosis, Upendra Parimi
Computational Study Of Fluid-Valve Interaction Involving Deep Vein Thrombosis, Upendra Parimi
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The venous valves in veins carry on the important function of eliminating the retrograde (re-verse) flow of blood in veins and help the veins to carry on their work effectively. The abnormal functioning of venous valves can cause deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is a phenomena caused by clotting in deep veins. The importance of the thesis work lies in understanding the role of blood flow dynamics in Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Elderly People and pregnant women are the ones who are most likely to develop DVT. It was determined from previous studies that women in their postpartum period are …

An Investigation On The Mixing Hydrodynamics Of A Gas-Solid Fluidized Bed, Mario Alberto Ruvalcaba
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In previous decades, the experimental and numerical studies of multiphase flows have remarkably increased especially gas-solid flows. Research of this type has abundant applications in energy, chemical processes, among others. Moreover, common applications include fluid catalytic cracking for petroleum refineries, fluidized bed reactors (type of chemical reactors), interface modification, such as applying a coating onto solid items, and an important technology breakthrough in coal gasification. The work presented on this thesis concentrates on the investigation of gas-solid flows utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. The gas-solid flows studies performed on this investigation assumed the solid phase as a continuum with …
Insight Into The Physics Of Rupture: Dynamic Triggering Seismicity, Hector Gonzalez-Huizar
Insight Into The Physics Of Rupture: Dynamic Triggering Seismicity, Hector Gonzalez-Huizar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Seismic waves can trigger earthquakes and tremor at large distances from the causable event. Dynamic triggering occurs when the surface waves from large earthquakes change the stresses conditions on previously overstressed faults, promoting failure. To understand the causative stresses and environments behind dynamic triggering, we model the change in the stress field that the passing of Rayleigh and Love waves cause on a fault plane of arbitrary orientation relative to the direction of propagation of the waves, and apply a Coulomb failure criterion to calculate the potential of these stress changes to trigger seismicity. We apply our model to three …

Impacting Testing Of High Temperature Ceramics Through The Use Of A Vitiated Heater For Hot And Cold Fire Collisions, Adrian Trejo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Material testing is a crucial step during the design process as particular materials serve as safety and life saving conditions. In this study, a MoSi2 is chosen as the target specimen to undergo impact under high temperatures. An impact apparatus is designed and constructed for the purpose of propelling alumina particles at high velocities. A nozzle using compressed nitrogen gas is used to fire the particle at the desired velocities. Due to the possibility of thermal shock occurring at higher temperatures, a separate nozzle utilizing vitiation heating is designed to fire the particle at equally higher temperatures to prove the …
An Experimental Study Of The Hydrodynamics Of Multiphase Flow In Fluidized Beds, Gerardo Vargas
An Experimental Study Of The Hydrodynamics Of Multiphase Flow In Fluidized Beds, Gerardo Vargas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Fluidized bed reactors have been widely used as a gasifier in coal gasification processes to convert coal into other forms of energy. At this stage, full fluidization is required to attain the best thermochemical reaction within the fluid-solid mixture. This can only be achieved if the fluid is maintained between minimum fluidization and terminal velocities. To better understand the hydrodynamics of multiphase flow, a fluidized bed was designed and constructed to carry out the investigation. Compressed air and 1-mm glass beads were used to determine gas minimum fluidization and terminal velocities at three different particle concentrations. The solids were enclosed …
Laminar Burning Velocities Of Gas Mixtures, Vishwanath Reddy Ardha
Laminar Burning Velocities Of Gas Mixtures, Vishwanath Reddy Ardha
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, burning velocities of hydrogen-carbon monoxide (H2-CO) mixtures, which are primary constituents of syngas fuels, are measured. The effect of different burner systems, H2 concentration, and different measurement techniques on the burning velocities of H2-CO mixtures is also discussed. The burning velocities of H2-CO mixtures increase with the increase in H2 content in the mixture. When compared with different burner systems using different methods, the burning velocity data almost coincide in the lean condition, but at rich condition the data stray away from each other. The burning velocities of actual syngas compositions (based on different sources of coal) …

Experimental Investigation Of A Meso-Scale Axial Flow Pump, Jonathon Ray Bice
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The scope of this work involves the testing of an experimental meso-scale axial flow pump intended for use in micro-spacecraft and micro-satellites. A setup was implemented to test pressure and flow characteristics at different velocities for three configurations of the pump. In addition, an alternate setup was used to test torque and efficiency. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were also conducted. The results are presented and analyzed to determine whether the pump is a viable alternative for the space industry.

Flashback Propensity Of Gas Mixtures, Bidhan Kumar Dam
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, experimental measurements of flashback propensity of hydrogen (H2)-carbon monoxide (CO) mixtures, which are the primary constituents of syngas fuels, are described. The effects of H2 concentration, diluents and swirl on the flashback propensity of H2 CO flames are discussed. For boundary layer type flashback, the critical velocity gradient (gF) values of 5 to 95%, 15 to 85%, and 25 to 75% H2-CO mixtures somewhat agree with the scaling relation (g_F=c (S_L^2)/α) and yield an average c value of 0.038. At a lower SL2/α ratio, burner diameters have small effects on critical velocity gradient measurements; however, the effect …
