Prototyping And Testing Of Solar Hybrid Pv-T Panels, Joel Aaron Lamson
Prototyping And Testing Of Solar Hybrid Pv-T Panels, Joel Aaron Lamson
Masters Theses
"The combination of photovoltaic and solar thermal (PV-t) systems has been proven to provide greater efficiency than their stand-alone counterparts. Previous studies on hybrid assemblies have found favorable results supporting the combination of both systems. The research presented here builds on the work competed here at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) yielding favorable results of increased efficiencies as compared to stand-alone systems. The main difference between this experiment and previous research at Missouri S&T is that the hybrid PV-t is unglazed. The effect of an unglazed panel is shown to reduce the thermal output of the PV-t …

Microlens Array Light Trapping In Cdte/Cds Solar Cells, Patrick Michael Margavio
Masters Theses
"In light of the continued rise in fossil fuel costs, alternative energy sources, such as solar technology, are increasingly important. Concentrating photovoltaic systems are promising for future efficient and cost effective competition with fossil fuels. A microlens array is employed to a CdTe/CdS semiconducting solar cell to increase efficiency via light trapping. Since the microlens array will cause a local increase in incident light intensity, it should cause a corresponding increase in efficiency. The solar cell is deposited layer by layer. The CdS layer is chemically deposited. The CdTe layer is deposited using a novel additive manufacture technique: laser melting …

Manufacturing And Characterization Of Soy-Based Polyurethane Composites, Rama Bhadra Raju Vuppalapati
Doctoral Dissertations
"The major cost drivers for composites are raw materials and manufacturing process. Automated manufacturing processes like pultrusion and low cost bio-based raw materials can significantly lower the cost of composites. Polyurethane (PU) resin systems are being introduced in the pultrusion industry as they have higher performance characteristics and manufacturing feasibility when compared to conventional resin systems such as polyester and vinyl ester. PU resin systems are generally characterized as aromatic and aliphatic. Aliphatic PU has lower mechanical properties than the aromatic resin system due to its chemical structure. Nano materials can be used to increase the mechanical properties of aliphatic …
The Risk Mitigation Strategy Taxonomy And Generated Risk Event Effect Neutralization Method, Daniel A. Krus
The Risk Mitigation Strategy Taxonomy And Generated Risk Event Effect Neutralization Method, Daniel A. Krus
Doctoral Dissertations
"In the design of new products and systems, the mitigation of potential failures is very important. The sooner in a product's design mitigation can be performed, the lower the cost and easier to implement those mitigations become. However, currently, most mitigations strategies rely on the expertise of the engineers designing a product, and while models and for failure modes do exist to help, there are no guidelines for performing product changes to reduce risk. To help alleviate this, the risk mitigation strategy taxonomy is created from an empirical collection of mitigation strategies used in industry for failure mitigation, creating a …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Highly sensitive and robust refractive index (RI) fiber sensors are proposed, which are based on concatenating two micro air-cavities. the micro air-cavities embedded in the fiber along the core axis are fabricated by combining the techniques of femtosecond laser micromachining and arc fusion splicing. the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of an attenuation peak of a sensor in air is 0.048 nm, and the extinction ratio is ∼15 dB. When the diameter of the cavity is slightly larger than the fiber core diameter, the sensor is highly sensitive to external RI changes. a high sensitivity of 172.4 nm/refractive index unit …

Efficient Uncertainty Quantification In Multidisciplinary Analysis Of A Reusable Launch Vehicle, Benjamin R. Bettis, Serhat Hosder, Tyler Winter
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The objective of this study was to apply a recently developed uncertainty quantification framework to the multidisciplinary analysis of a reusable launch vehicle (RLV). This particular framework is capable of efficiently propagating mixed (inherent and epistemic) uncertainties through complex simulation codes. the goal of the analysis was to quantify uncertainty in various output parameters obtained from the RLV analysis, including the maximum dynamic pressure, cross-range, range, and vehicle takeoff gross weight. Three main uncertainty sources were treated in the simulations: (1) reentry angle of attack (inherent uncertainty), (2) altitude of the initial reentry point (inherent uncertainty), and (3) the Young's …

Conveying gas containing sulfur through a sulfur tolerant planar solid oxide fuel cell (PSOFC) stack for sulfur scrubbing, followed by conveying the gas through a non-sulfur tolerant PSOFC stack. The sulfur tolerant PSOFC stack utilizes anode materials, such as LSV, that selectively convert H2S present in the fuel stream to other non-poisoning sulfur compounds. The remaining balance of gases remaining in the completely or near H2S-free exhaust fuel stream is then used as the fuel for the conventional PSOFC stack that is downstream of the sulfur-tolerant PSOFC. A broad range of fuels such as gasified coal, …
Radiative And Nonradiative Decay Rates In Chromium-Related Centers In Nanodiamonds, S. Castelletto, Alberto Boretti
Radiative And Nonradiative Decay Rates In Chromium-Related Centers In Nanodiamonds, S. Castelletto, Alberto Boretti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We address for the first time the measurement of nonradiative decay rates in Cr-related centers in nanodiamonds. Compared to our previous quantum efficiency measurement of Cr centers created in bulk diamond, separate measurements of radiative and nonradiative decay rates in grown nanodiamonds prove more challenging due to size dependence effects. We demonstrate in this Letter that, using defocused dipole imaging and collection efficiency calculation via finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), a quantum efficiency up to 0.9 can be inferred to Cr-related centers showing a 2-level system photon statistics. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

Diesel-Like And Hcci-Like Operation Of A Truck Engine Converted To Hydrogen, Alberto A. Boretti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In addition to the traditional spark ignition (SI), premixed, gasoline-like and compression ignition (CI), diffusion, Diesel-like operation of internal combustion engines, premixed, homogeneous charge, compression ignition (HCCI) operation has also been proposed to improve the fuel conversion efficiency and reduce the pollutant formation. to be attractive, the operation in HCCI mode has to be coupled with the other traditional operations, being HCCI in general difficult to be controlled and limited to values of the air-to-fuel equivalence ratio λ within a narrow windows set by the lean burn limits with large λ and the peak pressure limits with small λ. Furthermore, …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers. Part 4. Effect Of High Enthalpy, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper we present direct numerical simulations (DNS) of hypersonic turbulent boundary layers to study high-enthalpy effects. We study high-and low-enthalpy conditions, which are representative of those in hypersonic flight and ground-based facilities, respectively. We find that high-enthalpy boundary layers closely resemble those at low enthalpy. Many of the scaling relations for low-enthalpy flows, such as van-Driest transformation for the mean velocity, Morkovin's scaling, and the modified strong Reynolds analogy hold or can be generalized for high-enthalpy flows by removing the calorically perfect-gas assumption. We propose a generalized form of the modified Crocco relation, which relates the mean temperature …

Effective Approach For Estimating Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, L. (Lian) Duan, M. P. Martín
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An effective approach for estimating turbulence-chemistry interaction in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers is proposed, based on "laminar- chemistry" Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes mean flow solutions. The approach combines an assumed probability density function with a temperature fluctuation scaling, which provides the second moment for specifying the shape of the probability density function. As a result, the effects of temperature fluctuation on chemical production rates can be estimated without solving an additional moment evolution equation. The validity of this method is demonstrated using direct-numerical-simulation data. This approach can be used to identify regions with potentially significant turbulence-chemistry interaction in hypersonic boundary layers and …

InGaN based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with undoped GaN interlayer of variant thicknesses grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique have been investigated. It was found that the thickness of undoped GaN interlayers affected LEDs' performance greatly. The LED with 50 nm undoped GaN interlayer showed higher light output power and lower reverse-leakage current compared with the others at 20 mA. Based on electrical and optical characteristics analysis and numerical simulation, these improvements are mainly attributed to the improvement of the quality of depletion region by inserting an undoped GaN layer, as well as reduction of the Shockley-Read-Hall recombination in InGaN/GaN …

High power density, stoichiometric, turbocharged, directly injected engines with water injection and a three-way catalytic converter after treatment have been proposed as one of the most promising H2ICE [1]. These throttle-controlled engines have top brake efficiencies exceeding 40%, but large penalties in efficiency reducing the load with 1 bar BMEP values approaching 10%. Recovery of the large amount of fuel energy lost in the coolant especially at low loads as well as the fuel energy lost in the exhaust that is significant at high loads and speeds may push not only the top brake efficiencies to exceed the 45% mark, …

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a strategy for fabricating complex structures via a hybrid manufacturing process. The Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) lab at Missouri S&T has developed a hybrid process combining both a direct metal deposition process and a five-axis CNC milling. Accessibility is a difficulty when finish machining internal features. The concept is to pause the deposition process to finish machine an internal feature while it is still visible is one possible solution to this issue. However, this must be done in a manner that will not be spoiled when the deposition process continues. This …

Bio-Inspired Design Of Bipolar Plate Flow Fields For Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Nannan Guo, Ming-Chuan Leu, Maoliang Wu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The flow field of a bipolar plate distributes hydrogen and oxygen for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and removes the produced water from the fuel cells. It greatly influences the performance of fuel cells, especially regarding reduction of mass transport loss. Flow fields with good gas distribution and water removal capabilities reduce the mass transport loss, thus allowing higher power density. Inspired by natural structures such as veins in tree leaves and blood vessels in lungs, which efficiently feed nutrition from one central source to large areas and are capable of removing undesirable by-products, a mathematic model has been …

The freeze–form extrusion process for aqueous-based ceramic paste is complex due to the non-Newtonian behavior of the paste. In this paper the process is studied numerically using a developed mathematical model. The ceramic paste viscosity is characterized by the Herschel-Bulkley model. The relationship between plunger velocity and extrusion force is computed numerically. The influence of air, which is mixed with the paste during the loading process, is also examined. Due to the compressibility introduced by the trapped air, the plunger force dynamic response is typically dominated by a first order response. It is also shown that the extrusion plunger force …

Using the first-principle phonon calculations under the quasiharmonic approximation, thermal expansions in III-nitrides with wurtzite AlN, GaN, and InN are reported. The results showed that it is different for each thermal expansion of three III-nitrides at low temperatures, which is consistent with their Grneisen parameters as the function of temperature. Below 50 K, negative thermal expansions occur in InN, while GaN and AlN follow the rule of positive thermal expansion. To seek the origin of positivenegative thermal expansion distinction, the mode Grneisen parameters and the phonon spectra are investigated. They indicate that different low-frequency phonon vibration modes correspond to the …
