Through-Thickness Reinforcement And Repair Of Carbon Fiber Based Honeycomb Structures Under Flexure And Tension Of Adhesively Bonded Joints, Aleric Alden Sanders Apr 2020

Through-Thickness Reinforcement And Repair Of Carbon Fiber Based Honeycomb Structures Under Flexure And Tension Of Adhesively Bonded Joints, Aleric Alden Sanders

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Repair and reinforcement of composite honeycomb structures is an area of concern as higher demands are being placed on high strength, lightweight structural materials, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics and corresponding honeycomb structures. A common issue with these structures is when a delamination in the facesheet may form and spread, leading to a failure scenario. An investigation of adding a through thickness reinforcement (TTR) to these structures at the sample level that undergo four-point-bending, tension, and joining methods is conducted throughout this thesis. The embedding of pultruded carbon fiber rods is found to be an ideal addition to composite …

A Study Of The Aeroacoustics Of Swept Propellers For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Arthur David Wiedemann Apr 2020

A Study Of The Aeroacoustics Of Swept Propellers For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Arthur David Wiedemann

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have increased in availability and use in both public and commercial sectors. This increased use of small UAVs or “drones” has the unfortunate consequence of introducing excessive noise into communities where they operate. Implementation of noise reduction methods is necessary if we wish to see expanded use of drones in public areas. With electric propulsion, the primary source of noise is the rotor/propeller used in contemporary multi-rotor configurations. In this thesis, the aerodynamics and acoustic behavior of various swept propellers is examined with computational and experimental methods.

A family of propeller geometries …

Thermal Contact Resistance Measurement And Related Uncertainties, Amanda Elizabeth Stark Apr 2020

Thermal Contact Resistance Measurement And Related Uncertainties, Amanda Elizabeth Stark

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Thermal contact resistance is an important parameter in detailed thermal analysis and design of aerospace systems. The ability to determine thermal contact resistance reliably can have a significant impact on the fidelity of thermal models—particularly for space applications. The 2004 NASA Langley Research Center thermal contact resistance test apparatus has been employed to evaluate two methods for inferring estimated interface surface temperatures so that thermal contact resistance can be calculated more accurately. The traditional method of extrapolation is a steady-state approach, while the new method utilizes inverse heat transfer techniques to account for inherent unsteadiness in these quasi-steady-state measurements. The …

Fast Reversible Phase Change Silicon For Visible Active Photonics, Letian Wang, Matthew Eliceiri, Yang Deng, Yoonsoo Rho, Wan Shou, Heng Pan, Jie Yao, Costas P. Grigoropoulos Apr 2020

Fast Reversible Phase Change Silicon For Visible Active Photonics, Letian Wang, Matthew Eliceiri, Yang Deng, Yoonsoo Rho, Wan Shou, Heng Pan, Jie Yao, Costas P. Grigoropoulos

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Both amorphous and crystalline silicon are ubiquitous materials for electronics, photonics, and microelectromechanical systems. On-demand control of Si crystallinity is crucial for device manufacturing and to overcome the limitations of current phase-change materials (PCM) in active photonics. Fast reversible phase transformation in silicon, however, has never been accomplished due to the notorious challenge of amorphization. It is demonstrated that nanostructured Si can function as a PCM, since it can be reversibly crystallized and amorphized under nanosecond laser irradiation with different pulse energies. Reflection probing on a single nano disk's phase transformations confirms the distinct mechanisms for crystallization and amorphization. The …

7-Dof Robotic Arm Xy-Plane Translational Stability, Christopher Dean Alkire Apr 2020

7-Dof Robotic Arm Xy-Plane Translational Stability, Christopher Dean Alkire

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Robotic arms are traditionally mounted to rigid structures as they perform tasks. As a result, the arm’s movement would not affect the position of its mount and its operational space that it is performing a task within would remain constant. If a robotic arm were to function in orbit, the motion of the arm would cause it to rotate and translate about its center of mass, which changes as the joints of the arm rotate.

The purpose of this thesis is to focus on the two-dimensional translational effects of an arm operating on a simulated zero-friction surface and provide a …

Hybrid Non-Destructive Assessment For Flow Induced Vibration Piping Systems Using Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction, Keen Kuan Kong Apr 2020

Hybrid Non-Destructive Assessment For Flow Induced Vibration Piping Systems Using Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction, Keen Kuan Kong

Student Works (2020-2029)

Pipelines and piping systems are of great importance in many industries such as water supply, petroleum and petrochemicals and nuclear power generation. They provide transport for high-velocity pressurized fluids operating under time-varying conditions. They are required to operate non-stop for a schedule of 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Piping vibration failures have been one of the major causes of downtime, fires and explosions in industrial plant over the past 30 years. Failure of piping systems can have disastrous effects, leading to injuries and fatalities as well as to substantial cost to industry and the environment. Flow-induced vibration …

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition And Recurrence Map For The Identification Of Spatial–Temporal Patterns In A Low-Re Wake Downstream Of Two Cylinders, Meihua Zhang, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng, Huixuan Wu Mar 2020

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition And Recurrence Map For The Identification Of Spatial–Temporal Patterns In A Low-Re Wake Downstream Of Two Cylinders, Meihua Zhang, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng, Huixuan Wu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Flow decomposition methods provide systematic ways to extract the flow modes, which can be regarded as the spatial distribution of a coherent structure. They have been successfully used in the study of wake, boundary layer, and mixing. However, real flow structures also possess complex temporal patterns that can hardly be captured using the spatial modes obtained in the decomposition. In order to analyze the temporal variation of coherent structures in a complex flow field, this paper studies the recurrence in phase space to identify the pattern and classify the evolution of the flow modes. The recurrence pattern depends on the …

Detonation Confinement In A Radial Rotating Detonation Engine, Kavi Muraleetharan Mar 2020

Detonation Confinement In A Radial Rotating Detonation Engine, Kavi Muraleetharan

Theses and Dissertations

Radial Rotating Detonation Engines (RRDE) have provided an opportunity for use of a pressure-gain combustor in a more compact form compared to an axial RDE. A successfully tested RRDE has operated over a wide range of test conditions and produced detonation modes with one, two, and three waves. The presence of multiple waves located the detonation waves to the outer radius, while one wave modes operated closer to the inner radius. Locating the detonation wave closer to the inner diameter resulted in less time for combustion prior to the radial turbine. Subsequently, this tended to decrease efficiency. To attempt to …

Distributed Adaptive State Estimation And Tracking By Using Active-Passive Sensor Networks, Akhilesh Raj, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Tansel Yucelen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heterogeneous sensor networks (HSN) find a wide range of applications in the field of military and civilian environments, where sensor nodes are utilized to estimate the position of a target with both dynamics and control input being unknown for the purposes of tracking. In the HSN, nodes are considered active depending upon their ability to sense the target output while the others are taken passive. Accurate estimation requires local information exchange among the spatially located sensor nodes, so that the active nodes as well as the passive nodes converge simultaneously to the same value. The local information exchange among the …

Design And Analysis Of A Compact Combustor For Integration With A Jetcat P90 Rxi, Daniel Holobeny Mar 2020

Design And Analysis Of A Compact Combustor For Integration With A Jetcat P90 Rxi, Daniel Holobeny

Theses and Dissertations

Ultra Compact Combustors are a novel approach to modern gas turbine combustor designs that look to reduce the overall combustor length and weight. A previous study integrated an Ultra Compact Combustor into a JetCat P90 RXi turbine engine and achieved self-sustained operation with a length savings of 33% relative to the stock combustor. However, that combustor could not operate across the full stock engine performance range due to flameout at increased mass ow rates as reactions were pushed out of the primary zone. To ensure reactions stayed in the primary zone, a new design with a larger combustor volume was …

Angular Correlation Using Rogers-Szego-Chaos, Christine Schmid, Kyle J. Demars Feb 2020

Angular Correlation Using Rogers-Szego-Chaos, Christine Schmid, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polynomial chaos expresses a probability density function (pdf) as a linear combination of basis polynomials. If the density and basis polynomials are over the same field, any set of basis polynomials can describe the pdf; however, the most logical choice of polynomials is the family that is orthogonal with respect to the pdf. This problem is well-studied over the field of real numbers and has been shown to be valid for the complex unit circle in one dimension. The current framework for circular polynomial chaos is extended to multiple angular dimensions with the inclusion of correlation terms. Uncertainty propagation of …

Dislocation-Oxide Interaction In Y2o3 Embedded Fe: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, M. Mustafa Azeem, Qingyu Wang, Zhongyu Li, Yue Zhang Feb 2020

Dislocation-Oxide Interaction In Y2o3 Embedded Fe: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, M. Mustafa Azeem, Qingyu Wang, Zhongyu Li, Yue Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxide dispersed strengthened (ODS) steel is an important candidate for Gen-IV reactors. Oxide embedded in Fe can help to trap irradiation defects and enhances the strength of steel. It was observed in this study that the size of oxide has a profound impact on the depinning mechanism. For smaller sizes, the oxide acts as a void; thus, letting the dislocation bypass without any shear. On the other hand, oxides larger than 2 nm generate new dislocation segments around themselves. The depinning is similar to that of Orowan mechanism and the strengthening effect is likely to be greater for larger oxides. …

Characterization Of Inertial Particles In The Turbulent Wake Of A Porous Disk, Kristin Nichole Travis Jan 2020

Characterization Of Inertial Particles In The Turbulent Wake Of A Porous Disk, Kristin Nichole Travis

Dissertations and Theses

This study presents the findings of a wind tunnel experiment investigating the behaviour of micrometric inertial particles in the turbulent wake of a stationary porous disk. Various concentrations [Φv ∈ (2.95 x 10-6 - 1.22 x 10-5)] of polydisperse water droplets (diameter 13-41 µm) are compared to sub-inertial tracer particles. Hot-wire anemometry, phase Doppler interferometry and particle image velocimetry were implemented in the near and far wake regions to study the complex dynamics of the particles. Turbulence statistics and particle size distributions are presented and used to explore the particle wake interaction.

Near-Field Pressure Signature Splicing For Low-Fidelity Design Space Exploration Of Supersonic Aircraft, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker Jan 2020

Near-Field Pressure Signature Splicing For Low-Fidelity Design Space Exploration Of Supersonic Aircraft, Christian R. Bolander, Douglas F. Hunsaker

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

As interest in supersonic overland flight intensifies, new ways to meet government restrictions on sonic boom loudness must be implemented. Low-fidelity aerodynamic tools, such as PANAIR, can estimate the near-field pressure signature that ultimately determines the loudness of the sonic boom at the ground. These tools can greatly benefit the exploration of large design spaces due to their computational efficiency. One of the limitations of low-fidelity tools is the accuracy of the solution produced, which is dependent on the fundamental physical assumptions made in the development of the governing equations. If flow patterns are produced that severely violate these fundamental …

Tangle-Free Exploration With A Tethered Mobile Robot, Danylo Shapovalov, Guilherme Pereira Jan 2020

Tangle-Free Exploration With A Tethered Mobile Robot, Danylo Shapovalov, Guilherme Pereira

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Exploration and remote sensing with mobile robots is a well known field of research, but current solutions cannot be directly applied for tethered robots. In some applications, tethers may be very important to provide power or allow communication with the robot. This paper presents an exploration algorithm that guarantees complete exploration of arbitrary environments within the length constraint of the tether, while keeping the tether tangle-free at all times. While we also propose a generalized algorithm that can be used with several exploration strategies, our implementation uses a modified frontier-based exploration approach, where the robot chooses its next goal in …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Aerospace Materials, Vehicle Shape And Astronaut Position At Lowering The Whole Body Effective Dose Equivalent In Deep Space, Daniel K. Bond

Theses and Dissertations

As future crewed, deep space missions are being planned, it is important to assess how spacecraft design can be used to minimize radiation exposure. Collectively with shielding material, vehicle shape and astronaut position must be used to protect astronauts from the two primary sources of space radiation: Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) and Solar Particle Events (SPE). GCRs, which are composed of low intensity, highly energetic, and fully ionized stable and meta-stable isotopes, are considered a chronic source of radiation risk to the astronauts. SPEs, which originate from solar coronal mass ejections, are composed mostly of high intensity protons that can …

Impartial Sensor Tasking Via Forecasted Information Content Quantification, Matthew J. Gualdoni, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The consistently increasing population of space debris in orbit about the Earth is becoming an increasingly unavoidable problem, necessitating a proper handling of the problem of sensor tasking to effectively and efficiently obtain observations of space objects to maintain catalogs of their positions and velocities. A variety of approaches have been explored to achieve this in an autonomous fashion, assisting with space traffic management. This work presents new statistical analysis of the Kullback–Leibler divergence justifying the use of its expected value in generating sensor schedules. This divergence's use as an objective measure is extended to simultaneously consider, in an impartial …

Characterization Of Directed Energy Deposition Additively Manufactured Grcop-42 Alloy, Scott Landes Jan 2020

Characterization Of Directed Energy Deposition Additively Manufactured Grcop-42 Alloy, Scott Landes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

GRCop is an alloy family constructed of copper, chromium, and niobium and was developed by NASA for high heat flux applications. The first of its kind, GRCop-84, was specifically designed for the environments seen by channel cooled main combustion chamber liners. To further increase thermal conductivity while maintaining material strength characteristics, the percentage of alloying elements were cut in half and GRCop- 42 was developed. In recent years, NASA has successfully additively manufactured GRCop with comparable material characteristics to wrought GRCop using a Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) process. Benefits of this process include fabrication of intricate cooling channels as …

Optimization Strategies For Myopic And Forecasted Divergence-Based Sensor Tasking Objectives, Matthew J. Gualdoni, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In light of the ever-increasing value of space assets operating in the presence of a continuously growing population of space objects in orbit about Earth, space situational awareness is becoming more crucial than ever. The process of tracking and maintaining estimates for the numerous assets and space objects is a complex and highly demanding problem, as it requires robust state estimates in the presence of sparse data. As the number of space objects greatly outweighs the number of available sensors, a sensor tasking policy is necessary to properly utilize the available sensor resources in a way that ensures targets are …

Impact Of Considering And Neglecting States On Descent-To-Landing Navigation, Kyle J. Demars, Kari C. Ward Jan 2020

Impact Of Considering And Neglecting States On Descent-To-Landing Navigation, Kyle J. Demars, Kari C. Ward

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a novel square-root formulation of the consider/neglect Kalman filter for navigation applications. The proposed filter partitions system parameters into three distinct categories: those to be estimated by the filter, those whose contribution to the system can be considered without explicitly estimating them, and those with sufficiently low effect on the system such that their contribution can be neglected altogether. Discussion on appropriate selection of consider and neglect parameters is provided with specific attention given to descent-to-landing navigation. Monte Carlo simulations and analysis are performed to assess the performance of the square-root consider/neglect filter.

Robustness Metric For Robust Design Optimization Under Time-And Space-Dependent Uncertainty Through Metamodeling, Xinpeng Wei, Xiaoping Du Jan 2020

Robustness Metric For Robust Design Optimization Under Time-And Space-Dependent Uncertainty Through Metamodeling, Xinpeng Wei, Xiaoping Du

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Product performance varies with respect to time and space in many engineering applications. This paper discusses how to measure and evaluate the robustness of a product or component when its quality characteristics (QCs) are functions of random variables, random fields, temporal variables, and spatial variables. At first, the existing time-dependent robustness metric is extended to the present time-and space-dependent problem. The robustness metric is derived using the extreme value of the quality characteristics with respect to temporal and spatial variables for the nominal-the-better type quality characteristics. Then, a metamodel-based numerical procedure is developed to evaluate the new robustness metric. The …
