These problems include: the hydraulic oil temperature getting too high, the saw blades not having enough horsepower, and poor cutting performance due to operator error as well as terrain variations.

Resonance Frequencies Of A Spherical Aluminum Shell Subject To Static Internal Pressure, Andrew A. Piacsek, Sami Abdul-Wahid, Robert Taylor May 2012

Resonance Frequencies Of A Spherical Aluminum Shell Subject To Static Internal Pressure, Andrew A. Piacsek, Sami Abdul-Wahid, Robert Taylor

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Measurements of the vibrational response of a spherical aluminum shell subject to changes in the interior pressure clearly demonstrate that resonance frequencies shift higher as the pressure is increased. The frequency shift appears to be smaller for longitudinal modes than for bending wave modes. The magnitude of frequency shift is comparable to analytical predictions made for thin cylindrical shells. Changes in the amplitudes of resonance peaks are also observed. A possible application of this result is a method for noninvasively monitoring pressure changes inside sealed containers, including intracranial pressure in humans.

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Nelson, Jameson K. M.S., Purdue University, May 2012. Acoustic Emission Detection of Metals and Alloys During Machining Operations. Major Professor: Rodney G. Handy.

Practical correlation between material deformation attributes and theoretical concepts of machining has proven difficult to attain. The purpose of this study was to further explore trends and relationships using acoustic emission detection of materials undergoing single-point lathe turning machine processes. The majority of machining experiments that incorporate acoustic emissions focuses on tool degradation for the purposes of optimizing consumables required to manufacture mechanical devices. Experiments were implemented varying recording location, mechanical barrier condition, and machine parameters. The …

A Novel Ultrasonic Method To Quantify Bolt Tension, Jairo Andres Martinez Garcia Mar 2012

A Novel Ultrasonic Method To Quantify Bolt Tension, Jairo Andres Martinez Garcia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The threaded fasteners are one of the most versatile methods for assembly of structural components. For example, in bridges large bolts are used to fix base columns and small bolts are used to support access ladders. Naturally not all bolts are critical for the operation of the structure. Fasteners loaded with small forces and present in large quantities do not receive the same treatment as the critical bolts. Typical maintenance operations such tension measurements, internal stress checking or monitoring of crack development are not practical due to cost and time constrains. Although failure of a single non-critical fastener is not …

A Review Of Some Subtleties Of Practical Relevance, Keqin Gu

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This paper reviews some subtleties in time-delay systems of neutral type that are believed to be of particular relevance in practice. Both traditional formulation and the coupled differential-difference equation formulation are used. The discontinuity of the spectrum as a function of delays is discussed. Conditions to guarantee stability under small parameter variations are given. A number of subjects that have been discussed in the literature, often using different methods, are reviewed to illustrate some fundamental concepts. These include systems with small delays, the sensitivity of Smith predictor to small delay mismatch, and the discrete implementation of distributed-delay feedback control. The …

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Hydraulic power control systems are a common and important part of mechanical and agricultural systems. In hydraulic power system design, power, pressure, flow rates, and mechanism of circuitry are all important factors when analyzing any hydraulic system. Pumps, electric motors, reservoirs, working fluid properties, hydraulic circuitry, and a large variety of valves make up a functional hydraulic system. Applications for hydraulic systems vary widely from automotive, agricultural, mechanical etc. It is the engineers’ job to design a hydraulic system that will be functional, efficient, and safe.

Simulation Of Whistle Noise Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Acoustic Finite Element Simulation, Jiawei Liu Jan 2012

Simulation Of Whistle Noise Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Acoustic Finite Element Simulation, Jiawei Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The prediction of sound generated from fluid flow has always been a difficult subject due to the nonlinearities in the governing equations. However, flow noise can now be simulated with the help of modern computation techniques and super computers. The research presented in this thesis uses the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the acoustic finite element method (FEM) in order to simulate the whistle noise caused by vortex shedding. The acoustic results were compared to both analytical solutions and experimental results to better understand the effects of turbulence models, fluid compressibility, and wall boundary meshes on the acoustic frequency response. …

Root Locus Techniques With Nonlinear Gain Parameterization, Brandon Wellman Jan 2012

Root Locus Techniques With Nonlinear Gain Parameterization, Brandon Wellman

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This thesis presents rules that characterize the root locus for polynomials that are nonlinear in the root-locus parameter k. Classical root locus applies to polynomials that are affine in k. In contrast, this thesis considers polynomials that are quadratic or cubic in k. In particular, we focus on constructing the root locus for linear feedback control systems, where the closed-loop denominator polynomial is quadratic or cubic in k. First, we present quadratic root-locus rules for a controller class that yields a closed-loop denominator polynomial that is quadratic in k. Next, we develop cubic root-locus rules …

Aerodynamics And Control Of A Deployable Wing Uav For Autonomous Flight, Michael Thamann Jan 2012

Aerodynamics And Control Of A Deployable Wing Uav For Autonomous Flight, Michael Thamann

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

UAV development and usage has increased dramatically in the last 15 years. In this time frame the potential has been realized for deployable UAVs to the extent that a new class of UAV was defined for these systems. Inflatable wing UAVs provide a unique solution for deployable UAVs because they are highly packable (some collapsing to 5-10% of their deployed volume) and have the potential for the incorporation of wing shaping. In this thesis, aerodynamic coefficients and aileron effectiveness were derived from the equations of motion of aircraft as necessary parameters for autonomous flight. A wind tunnel experiment was performed …

Low Energy Disruption Of Lipid Containing Biomass, Joaquin Rodriguez Jan 2012

Low Energy Disruption Of Lipid Containing Biomass, Joaquin Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Lipid containing biomass from microalgae has received recent research interest as a renewable and sustainable feedstock for biofuel production. Algae is known to offer as much as 30 times the energy density than corn based ethanol, the current world standard for biomass based liquid transportation fuels. The development of large scale systems and methods of extracting lipids from microalgae is still in the early stages of development and significant increases in efficiency and reduction in costs are necessary to substantiate algae as a feasible alternative source of fuel. Traditional conversion of algae feedstock into a refineable feedstock for biofuel can …

Characterizing The Acoustic Properties Of The Jet Lab At The National Center For Physical Acoustics, Joshua Anderson Lieblong Jan 2012

Characterizing The Acoustic Properties Of The Jet Lab At The National Center For Physical Acoustics, Joshua Anderson Lieblong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aerodynamic noise has been a problem since the first use of the jet engine for military aircraft in World War II. For further uses of the jet engine to be possible, problems due to jet noise must be researched and addressed. Anechoic chambers were proposed as a testing facility for research in aerodynamic noise because of their supposed free-field characteristics. The international standard ISO 3745-1977 was introduced to determine whether the facilities could be considered anechoic, semi-anechoic, or neither. An experiment was designed to determine at what frequencies the National Center for Physical Acoustics' Jet Lab Facility is non-anechoic, semi-anechoic, …

Shelf-Scale Mapping Of Fish Distribution Using Active And Passive Acoustics, Carrie Christy Wall Jan 2012

Shelf-Scale Mapping Of Fish Distribution Using Active And Passive Acoustics, Carrie Christy Wall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fish sound production has been associated with courtship and spawning behavior. Acoustic recordings of fish sounds can be used to identify distribution and behavior. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) can record large amounts of acoustic data in a specific area for days to years. These data can be collected in remote locations under potentially unsafe seas throughout a 24-hour period providing datasets unattainable using observer-based methods. However, the instruments must withstand the caustic ocean environment and be retrieved to obtain the recorded data. This can prove difficult due to the risk of PAMs being lost, stolen or damaged, especially in highly …

Dolphin Sound Production And Distribution On The West Florida Shelf, Peter Simard Jan 2012

Dolphin Sound Production And Distribution On The West Florida Shelf, Peter Simard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigation of dolphin sound production and distribution off west central Florida. Although a wealth of information exists on the production of common sounds (whistles, echolocation) made by captive, trained dolphins, far less is known about free-ranging dolphin sound production and of unusual sounds. In addition, while inshore dolphin populations or communities are the subjects of research projects in many locations, dolphins in offshore waters are less commonly studied. The objectives of this dissertation were to contribute information on free-ranging dolphin sounds and continental shelf dolphin distribution.

While echolocation has been rigorously studied in captive, trained dolphins, …

Multi-Disciplinary Hands-On Desktop Learning Modules And Modern Pedagogies, Bernard J. Van Wie, David B. Thiessen, Marc Compere, Ximena Toro, Jennifer C. Adam, Et Al.

Publications

Our team’s research focuses on fundamental problems in undergraduate education in terms of how to expand use of well researched, yet still “new”, teaching pedagogies of ‘sensing’ or ‘hands-on’, ‘active’ and ‘problem-based learning’ within engineering courses. It is now widely accepted that traditional lectures ARE NOT best for students – yet that is what the community almost universally does.

To address this issue we are developing new Desktop Learning Modules (DLMs) that contain miniaturized processes with a uniquely expandable electronic system to contend with known sensor systems/removable cartridges, as well as, unknown expansions to the project. We have shown that …

Dynamic Test Scheduling In Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation Of Commercial Vehicles, Tenil Cletus Dec 2011

Dynamic Test Scheduling In Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation Of Commercial Vehicles, Tenil Cletus

Master's Theses

Modern day commercial vehicles are controlled by various Electronic Control Units (ECU). They are not only tested as single units, but also by networking them in Controlled Area Network bus (CAN) to form a complete electrical control system. This is achieved using Hardware In the Loop (HIL) Integration Lab. In HIL, the electrical system is connected to a real time mathematical model of the vehicle plus it’s environment so as to form a loop.

Testing functionality of the electrical system begins by defining functional tests. An example would be testing cruise control activation. Executing each test is made possible by …

Predicting The Acoustic Response Of The Golf Club & Ball Impact Using Finite Elements And The Boundary Element Method, Scott Henry Moreira Dec 2011

Predicting The Acoustic Response Of The Golf Club & Ball Impact Using Finite Elements And The Boundary Element Method, Scott Henry Moreira

Master's Theses

An improved and repeatable method for meshing golf club heads using finite elements in TrueGrid® was developed. Using solid brick elements through the thickness of the club head instead of shell elements better represents the many thickness variations throughout each section of a club head. This method also results in a high quality mesh at the center of the club head sections while still maintaining high quality at the edges. A simulation procedure was also developed to predict the acoustic pressure at a designated point in an acoustic medium of a golf club and ball impact using the BEM and …

Nonlinear Progressive Wave Equation For Stratified Atmospheres, B. Edward Mcdonald, Andrew A. Piacsek Nov 2011

Nonlinear Progressive Wave Equation For Stratified Atmospheres, B. Edward Mcdonald, Andrew A. Piacsek

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The nonlinear progressive wave equation (NPE) [McDonald and Kuperman, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 81, 1406–1417 (1987)] is expressed in a form to accommodate changes in the ambient atmospheric density, pressure, and sound speed as the time-stepping computational window moves along a path possibly traversing significant altitude differences (in pressure scale heights). The modification is accomplished by the addition of a stratification term related to that derived in the 1970s for linear range-stepping calculations and later adopted into Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov-type nonlinear models. The modified NPE is shown to preserve acoustic energy in a ray tube and yields analytic similarity solutions for …

Vibration-Based Health Monitoring Of Multiple-Stage Gear Train And Differential Planetary Transmission Involving Teeth Damage And Backlash Nonlinearity, Andrew Patrick Sommer Sep 2011

Vibration-Based Health Monitoring Of Multiple-Stage Gear Train And Differential Planetary Transmission Involving Teeth Damage And Backlash Nonlinearity, Andrew Patrick Sommer

Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to develop vibration-based fault detection strategies for on-line condition monitoring of gear transmission systems. The study divides the thesis into three sections. First of all, the local stresses created by a root fatigue crack on a pinion spur gear are analyzed using a quasi-static finite element model and non-linear contact mechanics simulation. Backlash between gear teeth which is essential to provide better lubrication on tooth surfaces and to eliminate interference is included as a defect and a necessary part of transmission design. The second section is dedicated to fixed axis power trains. Torsional vibration …

Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For The Discrete Velocity Boltzmann-Bgk Equation, Elena Craig Jul 2011

Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For The Discrete Velocity Boltzmann-Bgk Equation, Elena Craig

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) absorbing boundary conditions were first proposed by Berenger in 1994 for the Maxwell's equations of electromagnetics. Since Hu first applied the method to Euler's equations in 1996, progress made in the application of PML to Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) includes linearized Euler equations with non-uniform mean flow, non-linear Euler equations, flows with an arbitrary mean flow direction, and non-linear clavier-Stokes equations. Although Boltzmann-BGK methods have appeared in the literature and have been shown capable of simulating aeroacoustics phenomena, very little has been done to develop absorbing boundary conditions for these methods. The purpose of this work was …

Quantifying Multiple Types Of Damping Acting On Bronze-Wound Guitar Strings, Jonathan Christian Jun 2011

Quantifying Multiple Types Of Damping Acting On Bronze-Wound Guitar Strings, Jonathan Christian

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

The goal of this study was to quantify the contributions of multiple damping types acting on guitar strings for each mode over a wide frequency range so that design variables could be identified to one day create frequency based damping in guitar strings. Structural dynamic testing was used to obtain the time-response of a vibrating string in open air and in a vacuum. From this signal, each harmonic was filtered and the decay envelope was curve-fitted with a function that was a linear summation of decay functions. From the curve-fits, the damping coefficients for aerodynamic, friction, and material damping were …

Development Of A Cubesat Instrument For Microgravity Particle Damper Performance Analysis, John Trevor Abel Jun 2011

Development Of A Cubesat Instrument For Microgravity Particle Damper Performance Analysis, John Trevor Abel

Master's Theses

Spacecraft pointing accuracy and structural longevity requirements often necessitate auxiliary vibration dissipation mechanisms.  However, temperature sensitivity and material degradation limit the effectiveness of traditional damping techniques in space.  Robust particle damping technology offers a potential solution, driving the need for microgravity characterization.   A 1U cubesat satellite presents a low cost, low risk platform for the acquisition of data needed for this evaluation, but severely restricts available mass, volume, power and bandwidth resources.  This paper details the development of an instrument subject to these constraints that is capable of capturing high resolution frequency response measurements of highly nonlinear particle damper dynamics.
