Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study has been made to determine the effect of antimony, chloride ion, and glue on copper electrorefining. All deposits were made at a temperature of 65° C on a titanium cathode. Current densities of 398 A m-2 and 133 A m-2 were used. The deposits were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine morphology and crystal orientation. Atomic absorption (AA) and Auger spectroscopy (AES) were used to study the chemical composition of the deposits and a simple bend test was used to determine structural integrity. It was found that when the antimony concentration in …

Disk And Strip Forging With Side Surface Foldower: Part 2: Evaluation Of The Upper-Bound Solutions, Ronald A. Kohser, B. Avitzur Jan 1978

Disk And Strip Forging With Side Surface Foldower: Part 2: Evaluation Of The Upper-Bound Solutions, Ronald A. Kohser, B. Avitzur

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The upper-bound solutions developed in Part 1 are evaluated with regard to their ability to produce a lower value for required power (load, pressure, or work). Comparisons made with existing solutions such as the triangular field solution and one-zone bulge solution show that for strip, each solution has a domain of geometry and friction in which it is superior. The new solution produces a lower upper-bound for conditions of high interface, friction and relatively thin specimen, the area where fold over is the observed mode of flow. For solid cylindrical disks, the solution fails to improve upon existing analyses, but …

The Effects Of Certain Impurities And Their Interactions On Zinc Electrowinning, Donald R. Fosnacht Jan 1978

The Effects Of Certain Impurities And Their Interactions On Zinc Electrowinning, Donald R. Fosnacht

Doctoral Dissertations

“The effects of germanium, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, glue, and free acid concentration were studied on both commercial and synthetic electrolytes. The effects of a single factor and the combined effects of multiple factors were elucidated. The temperature, zinc concentration, and current density were also varied. It was found that the acid concentration was the most critical factor when impurity levels were at normal plant solution concentrations. The ranges where the effect of the impurity became apparent were: greater than 20 ppb for antimony; 40 ppb for germanium; 120 ppb for arsenic; and 7-8 mg/l for cobalt for a solution containing …

Evaluation Of Organic Additives For Use In Zinc Electrowinning, R. C. Kerby, H. E. Jackson, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Yar Ming Wang

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Organic additives are used extensively in zinc electrowinning to assist in controlling the process. A cyclic voltammetry technique has been developed to provide a rapid, quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of selected organic additives in minimizing the deleterious effects that impurities, such as antimony, have on zinc deposition. Results have indicated that animal glues are more effective than the other organic additives tested, which included several gums, enzymes, and amino acids, in relation to the current efficiency of zinc production. Of the various animal glues compared in this research, the most effective appeared to have average molecular weights in the …

Positron Lifetime As A Function Of Grain Size, Hollis P. Leighly Feb 1977

Positron Lifetime As A Function Of Grain Size, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Published data on positron annihilation lifetime in copper as a function of grain size have been analyzed to show that there is a linear relationship between the internal grain boundary surface area, per unit volume, S v, and the positron lifetime, τ. The analysis indicates that grain boundaries are important in the trapping of positrons. It is suggested that the slope of the resulting straight line, dS v/dτ, can be used to determine the annihilation rate of the grain boundaries. © 1977 Springer-Verlag.

On The Effects Of Antimony And Glue On Zinc Electrocrystallization Behaviour, D. J. Robinson, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation has been made to determine the effects that additions of glue and antimony have on the electrowinning of zinc from acid sulphate solutions. In particular, the zinc crystal growth and cathode current efficiencies were studied in an attempt to establish a correlation between morphology and the nature of the additives. Operating conditions of 55 A ft-2* and 35°C were used for most of the experiments with electrolyte concentrations of approximately 55 gl-1 zinc and 150 gl-1 H2SO4. Additional runs were made at 40,75 and 100 Aft-2 at 30,40 and 50°C in order to verify certain trends. Primarily by …

Anion Grain-Boundary Diffusion In Soidum Chloride, K. S. Sabharwal, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig Dec 1975

Anion Grain-Boundary Diffusion In Soidum Chloride, K. S. Sabharwal, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The grain-boundary diffusion of 131I in Harshaw pure and Ca-doped NaCl was investigated in the temperature range between 430 and 560°C. The Arrhenius plot of the grain-boundary diffusivity parameter Dδ displays a marked dip at around 510°C. It is proposed that this dip is due to a phase transformation occurring at the grain boundary, possibly calcium segregation.

Analogy Between Spinodal Decomposition And Martensitic Transformation, Tetsuro Suzuki, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1975

Analogy Between Spinodal Decomposition And Martensitic Transformation, Tetsuro Suzuki, Manfred Wuttig

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The translation of the theory developed for the spinodal decomposition of a supercooled alloy to the language appropriate for the martensitic transformation is carried out. In the spinodal theory, the stability of the alloy with respect to the composition fluctuation is examined, while in the present theory the stability of the crystal with respect to the shear displacement fluctuation, the transverse phonon, is studied. The analogy to the spinodal theory requires the revival of the strain gradient energy term or the couple stress term, the presence of which has been a subject of controversies for a long time since Laval. …

Electroless And Chemical Metal Deposition On Human Tooth Enamel., Richard Doyle Christie Jan 1975

Electroless And Chemical Metal Deposition On Human Tooth Enamel., Richard Doyle Christie

Masters Theses

"Initial investigations have confirmed the feasibility of depositing an adherent metal film onto tooth enamel. Such films might be used as pit and fissure sealants in preventive dentistry, with denture or orthodontic work, as an intermediate substrate with various organic or inorganic restorative materials, or other such areas. The process employs chemical solutions containing ions of the metal to be deposited and suitable reducing agent solutions.

To date, metallic copper and silver films have been plated onto teeth in vitro. The deposits are quite adherent and appear to exhibit the conductivity, crystal structure, luster, hardness, and other chemical and physical …

Variables Affecting The Rate Of Solution Of Mold Inoculants In Cast Iron, Jose Osorno Fonnegra Jan 1975

Variables Affecting The Rate Of Solution Of Mold Inoculants In Cast Iron, Jose Osorno Fonnegra

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to measure the effectiveness of an inoculant alloy reacting with molten cast iron in a reaction chamber properly located in the gating system.

The chemical composition of the gray iron was held constant while several metallurgical factors were varied to produce test samples with different cementite thicknesses. These chill depths were measured as an indication of the inoculation effectiveness.

Appreciable differences in chilling tendency were observed within the different variables studied. The results indicate that pouring temperature, as well as the other variables studied, are of considerable importance when dealing with inoculation of gray …

The Spheriodization Of Tool Steels., Siri Ram Rai Jan 1975

The Spheriodization Of Tool Steels., Siri Ram Rai

Masters Theses

"Four different tool steels--AISI 01, Sl, A9 and Tl5--were obtained in the 1/2-inch diameter hot rolled and air-cooled condition from the steel mill. The lower critical temperatures of these steels were determined. The spheroidization of each steel by three different spheroidizing procedures was evaluated with the use of hardness testing and metallographic techniques. Isothermal annealing completely spheroidized each steel yielding coarse carbides and low hardness. Cyclic annealing was an effective spheroidization procedure only for 01 and Tl5 steels. Hardening and tempering resulted in rather fine spheroidized structures in these steels. The total time consumed to produce the best spheroidized structures …

Phase Equilibria Near The Solidus Temperature For Iron-Rich Fe-Cu-C Alloys., Kenneth L. Metz Jr. Jan 1975

Phase Equilibria Near The Solidus Temperature For Iron-Rich Fe-Cu-C Alloys., Kenneth L. Metz Jr.

Masters Theses

"The effect of copper on the solidification temperature of graphite-saturated iron-rich alloys was determined with the use of cooling curves. The ternary invariant temperature for the alloy was found to be 1172°c with the use of heating curves. At 1172°c, graphite, austenite, an iron rich liquid, and a copper-rich liquid are in equilibrium. The composition of the metallic phases was determined by weight gain, chemical analysis, and the electron microprobe. In addition, the composition of the iron-rich liquid was calculated from thermodynamic data. Isothermal sections of the iron-rich corner of the system were constructed for several temperatures in the range …

Mechanism Of Uai3 To Uai4 Transformation, Ling Ping Lee, Hollis P. Leighly Jan 1975

Mechanism Of Uai3 To Uai4 Transformation, Ling Ping Lee, Hollis P. Leighly

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The compound, UA14, which forms during the peritectic reaction (Liquid + UA13 → UAI4), has a long needlelike shape and reveals the characteristic morphology of a fishtail when cut along the long axis. When cut perpendicular to the long axis, it shows an internal core of another phase, which has been identified as a primary aluminum solid solution. Because of the interesting relationship between the crystallographic structures of UA13 and UA14, the peculiar UA14 morphology can be explained on the basis of a proposed mechanism. The mechanism of UA13 to UA14 transformation has been identified as shear and diffusion controlled …

Application Of Voltammetry To Copper Electrodeposition, Louis Francis Toth Jr. Jan 1975

Application Of Voltammetry To Copper Electrodeposition, Louis Francis Toth Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy techniques to characterize copper deposition from an acid-sulfate electrolyte. The main process variables investigated were temperature and addition agents (chloride ion, glue, separan or thiourea) at different concentrations, over a range of current densities. Cathodes employed were either polycrystalline titanium or copper. Some long-time copper deposits were also made using Ti cathodes and the orientations of these deposits were determined by x-ray diffraction.

Observations of copper crystals produced during voltammetry scans, on a Ti cathode, indicated that a characteristic morphology was associated with each type …

Corrosion And Electrochemical Behavior Of Indium And Indium-Bismuth Alloys In Hydrochloric Acid, Yar Ming Wang Jan 1975

Corrosion And Electrochemical Behavior Of Indium And Indium-Bismuth Alloys In Hydrochloric Acid, Yar Ming Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The corrosion of In-Bi alloys was studied using X-ray, scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry techniques.

Calculated activation energy values indicated that the corrosion of In-Bi alloys was activation controlled. The effect of amine mixtures on the corrosion of In and In2Bi (ß1 phase) was studied. Morphological studies revealed that the porosity of the resulting physical surface structure was influential in determining the corrosion rate. In deaerated 3N HCl solutions, the selective dissolution of indium was the predominant mechanism in the corrosion of In-Bi alloys. The corrosion was always accompanied by a phase change …

A Study Of The Feasibility In Obtaining The Kinetics Of Various Ordering Phenomena Of The Iron Aluminum System Utilizing The Mössbauer Effect, Lloyd Rollan Chapman

Masters Theses

"The determination of the kinetics of ordering for various ordering phenomena of the Iron-Aluminum system utilizing exclusively the Mössbauer effect technique is shown to be infeasible for all but a highly restrictive consideration from experimental as well as theoretical evidence. Also, the possible use of the Mössbauer effect for the analysis of other ordered systems is discussed.

An alternative method for the acquisition of the needed information utilizing diffraction and Mossbauer techniques is presented recognizing the need for a computer fitting analysis of the complex Mössbauer effect spectra. However, at this stage of investigation, no experimental work has been performed …

Amine Flotation Of Feldspar From Magnetite Concentrate., Gary William Hudiburgh Jr. Jan 1974

Amine Flotation Of Feldspar From Magnetite Concentrate., Gary William Hudiburgh Jr.

Masters Theses

"The gangue in some magnetite ore bodies contains feldspar; the alkali content of the feldspar reduces the usefulness of these iron ores. One method of decreasing the feldspar content in magnetite concentrate is froth flotation.

The amine flotation of feldspar from magnetite concentrate was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The zeta potential of various feldspars (microcline, albite, anorthite, oligoclase and anorthoclase) were determined as a function of pH; the point of zero charge ranged from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using two amine reagents were conducted on the feldspars. …
