Kiss Gating In Sand-Cast Aluminum Alloys., Michael Lynn Holt
Kiss Gating In Sand-Cast Aluminum Alloys., Michael Lynn Holt
Masters Theses
"This thesis describes the optimum conditions necessary for the production of macrosound plate castings of sand-cast aluminum alloys by the kiss gating process. Castings of alloys of different freezing ranges in the Al-Si-Cu system (alloys 195, 319, 380, and 384) were produced and examined visually to evaluate the effectiveness of various gating systems and superheats on the production of macrosound castings.
For the aluminum alloys used in this investigation, the optimum conditions leading to the production of macrosound castings without the use of risers are one or a combination of the following: (l) wider freezing ranges; (2) pressurized gating systems; …
Effect Of Nodule Count And Cooling Rate On The Matrix Of Nodular Iron., Subrata Sen Gupta
Effect Of Nodule Count And Cooling Rate On The Matrix Of Nodular Iron., Subrata Sen Gupta
Masters Theses
"The objective of this investigation was to establish the relationship between the nodule count, the matrix structure, and the cooling rate through the eutectoid in nodular iron. The chemical composition of the nodular iron was held constant while various inoculation methods, inoculants, and mold designs, including chills, were used to vary the solidification time and cooling rate through the eutectoid range. This produced variations in both the matrix structure and the nodule count.
The nodule count has a power relationship with the percent pearlite in the matrix at fixed cooling rates: Percent pearlite = K (Nodule count)-n where the …
Magnetostrictive Aftereffects In A Dilute 50fe-50ni-C Alloy, Raj N. Master
Magnetostrictive Aftereffects In A Dilute 50fe-50ni-C Alloy, Raj N. Master
Masters Theses
"Crystallographically equivalent interstitial sites are energetically equivalent when the host crystal is free of any fields. This situation is shown in Fig. Pl from which it may be appreciated that the difference of the free energy of the "crystal" with an interstitial "I" located in "x" and "y" sites, respectively, is equal to zero. This energy equivalence of the various interstitial sites is destroyed when the host crystal is subjected to fields such as strain fields, magnetization fields or a combination of both as may be appreciated from Figs. P2 through P4. In this case, the interstitials will preferentially occupy …

A New And Direct Process For The Reduction Of Lead Sulfide, Rolando Oscar Fernandez
A New And Direct Process For The Reduction Of Lead Sulfide, Rolando Oscar Fernandez
Masters Theses
"The direct reduction of lead sulfide concentrates by iron was investigated. An oxygen-bearing flux was shown to be a necessary ingredient for complete reduction of the concentrate. The effects of time and temperature on lead recovery were studied. Only a trace amount of sulfur dioxide is evolved during reduction, which is in agreement with thermochemical calculations"--Abstract, page ii.
The Effect Of Gating On Soundness Of Al-Alloy Permanent Mold Castings, Dinesh Shantilal Patel
The Effect Of Gating On Soundness Of Al-Alloy Permanent Mold Castings, Dinesh Shantilal Patel
Masters Theses
"This thesis describes the step by step approach to the design of a gating system for the production of sound plate castings in permanent molds. Castings of different thicknesses were produced, utilizing various gating systems, and examined radiographically to evaluate the effectiveness of these gating systems in the production of sound castings. A gating system which allows metal to enter the mold cavity with no turbulence and which establishes proper temperature gradients in the casting will produce sound permanent mold castings"--Abstract, page ii.
Precipitation Of Carbon From Martensite In Ductile Iron, Devendra Ratilal Majmundar
Precipitation Of Carbon From Martensite In Ductile Iron, Devendra Ratilal Majmundar
Masters Theses
"Since metallographic studies of quenched and tempered cast iron have indicated that the carbon might precipitate directly as graphite rather than as carbides which are found in steels, this investigation used the Debye-Scherrer x-ray diffraction technique to examine electrolytically extracted residues from quenched and tempered ductile cast iron samples to determine if cementite was present. The precipitation of carbon in quenched samples of this ductile cast iron was found to be similar to the precipitation process in steels. Cementite was identified during the early stages of the tempering process when the tempering temperature was 800 degrees F, 900 degrees F, …
Premartensitic Elasticity Of Fe-Ni Invars, Bryce Linn Shriver
Premartensitic Elasticity Of Fe-Ni Invars, Bryce Linn Shriver
Doctoral Dissertations
"The premartensitic temperature dependence of ultrasonic wave propagation in Fe-30 pct Ni polycrystals and Fe-32 pct Ni single crystals was measured by using a continuous wave technique. As the temperature was lowered to within 10°C of the Ms, a nonlinear decrease of the relative shear velocity was observed. This effect is related to dislocation stacking fault instabilities which may trigger the martensitic phase transformation. In addition, the single crystals show a frequency dependence of the shear elastic constant C' well above the Ms. The dispersion is believed to be caused by fluctuations in the anisotropic molecular …
Prebainitic Phenomena In Aisi 86b80 And 0.8c-5.3ni Steels, Chung Lim
Prebainitic Phenomena In Aisi 86b80 And 0.8c-5.3ni Steels, Chung Lim
Doctoral Dissertations
"An ultrasonic investigation shows that the prebainitic kinetics of AISI 86B80 and 0.8C-5.3Ni steels follow t2/3 and or t1 time laws in the lower bainite temperature region. The data analysis indicates that these kinetics signal carbon segregation to dislocations. The simple time laws are interrupted at the bainite start time. It is shown that at this time the carbon depleted regions around dislocations transform martensitically. The lower bainite reaction is thus initiated by the formation of supersaturated ferrite through carbon segregation and the subsequent local martensitic transformation"--Abstract, page iii.
Thermal Expansion Of Nickel And Iron, And The Influence Of Nitrogen On The Lattice Parameter Of Iron At The Curie Temperature, Jinn-Wen Hwang
Thermal Expansion Of Nickel And Iron, And The Influence Of Nitrogen On The Lattice Parameter Of Iron At The Curie Temperature, Jinn-Wen Hwang
Masters Theses
"By precise X-ray measurements, the lattice parameter of pure nickel (Fisher Co., reagent grade) was found to be 3.52389 Å at 25ºC. At the same temperature, the lattice parameters of iron samples were found to be: 2.86621 Å, 2.86624 Å and 2.86614 Å for purities of 99.999%, 99.985% and 99.9%, respectively. By measuring high angle back reflection lines, the linear coefficients of thermal expansion of both nickel and iron were precisely determined. Both, high purity nickel and iron, exhibited anomalies in their expansion coefficients near their Curie points. This is in agreement with some of the previously reported data. Some …
Mechanism Of Ual₃ To Ual₄ Transformation, Ling Ping Lee
Mechanism Of Ual₃ To Ual₄ Transformation, Ling Ping Lee
Masters Theses
"The UAl₄ compound which forms during the peritectic reaction, Liquid + UAl₃ - UAl₄ , has a long needle-like shape and a characteristic morphology of fish-tail when cut along the long axis. It has an internal core of another phase when cut perpendicular to the needle axis. Because of the interesting similarity between UAl₃ and UAl₄ crystal structures, the peculiar UAl₄ morphology could be explained. The mechanism of UAl₃ to UAl₄ transformation is identified as shear and diffusion controlled transformation"--Abstract, page ii.

Equilibria Between Moo₂ And Liquid Molybdenum Oxide, Prakash Bakhru
Equilibria Between Moo₂ And Liquid Molybdenum Oxide, Prakash Bakhru
Masters Theses
"The oxygen pressure over solid molybdenum dioxide in equilibrium with liquid molybdenum oxide was determined by transpiration and solid electrolytic galvanic cell methods at 950ºC and 900º, 950º and 1000ºC respectively. The results were compared to those expected from thermodynamic data on the Mo-O system. Possible reactions between MoO₂ and SiO₂ were studied at different oxygen pressures up to 1550ºC. No compound formation or solid solution between MoO₂ and SiO₂ was detected by x-ray diffraction techniques. The phase boundary between MoO₂ and liquid molybdenum oxide was checked by microscopic examination of quenched samples. Equilibration runs were carried out in silica …
The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson
The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson
Masters Theses
"The effect of high electric field strengths (10⁴ to 10⁵ V/cm) present during neutron radiation on the neutron-induced defects is determined by utilizing the high electric field strength inherent in the emitter-base transistion region of an n-p-n transistor. A method is presented for the separation of neutron and gamma effects. Previous theoretical work on the ratio of base current increase to collector current decrease is applied to experimental data. The variations of the space-charge region volume damage introduction rate with neutron fluence and the average electric field strength are determined experimentally in order to obtain a measure of this effect. …
The Morphology Of The Cellular Precipitation Reaction In A Pb-3.0 Wt% Sn Alloy, Federico Sequeda Osorio
The Morphology Of The Cellular Precipitation Reaction In A Pb-3.0 Wt% Sn Alloy, Federico Sequeda Osorio
Masters Theses
"The complete development of the cellular precipitation structure at selected grain boundaries in a Pb-3.0 wt% Sn alloy during aging at 34°C and 23°C was investigated by light microscopy. The cellular structure in this alloy consists of lamellae of solute depleted lead solid solution and lamellae of ß tin precipitate. The cellular precipitation reaction begins by local migration of a grain boundary with concomitant grain boundary precipitation of ß tin. The grain boundary bows around the ß tin grain boundary precipitates which then begin to lengthen in the direction of boundary migration thus forming the precipitate lamellae of the cell. …
Dissolution Potentials And Activation Energies Of Insb Single Crystals, Martin E. Straumanis, Lih Da Hu
Dissolution Potentials And Activation Energies Of Insb Single Crystals, Martin E. Straumanis, Lih Da Hu
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The rest (or corrosion) and dissolution potentials of InSb single crystals in HC1 were determined. There is no potential difference (within error limits) between the inverse {111} faces in pure HC1. A difference of up to 44 mV and more develops as soon as the InSb electrode is anodically dissolved. The potential becomes less noble in the sequence In{111}, {100}, {110}, Sb{111}. The Tafel relationship is observed over three decades of current density. With additions of FeCl3, FeCl2, K3Fe(CN)6, K4Fe(CN)6, H2C4H4O6 to 2N HC1, the anodic potentials of both inverse {111} faces are shifted to more active values; the e'H …
Irradiation Enhanced Decomposition Of A Nickel-Carbon Solid Solution, B. L. Shriver, Manfred Wuttig
Irradiation Enhanced Decomposition Of A Nickel-Carbon Solid Solution, B. L. Shriver, Manfred Wuttig
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This investigation was performed to determine the effects of room temperature neutron irradiation on the distribution of carbon in a nickel-0.3 wt.% carbon alloy. The experiment consisted of comparing the amount of carbon in solid solution and the internal stresses of both unirradiated and irradiated (1013 fn-cm-2 < ΦF < 1018 fn-cm-2) samples following isochronal anneals between 100 and 1200°C by using the magnetic Dis accommodation technique. The results indicate that the amount of carbon remaining in solid solution decreases with increasing neutron dose. At temperatures below 200°C this is due to the trapping of carbon by mobile irradiation-produced defects. Between 200 and 600°C the formation of metastable carbides is enhanced by the presence of irradiation-produced defects. No differences are observed in irradiated and unirradiated samples above 600°C. © 1972.
Activation Volumes Of Carbon Diffusion In Fcc Iron-Nickel Alloys, J. Keiser, Manfred Wuttig
Activation Volumes Of Carbon Diffusion In Fcc Iron-Nickel Alloys, J. Keiser, Manfred Wuttig
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Dis accommodation technique was used to determine the activation volume of carbon diffusion, ΔV, in six fcc iron-nickel alloys. Measurements were made at temperatures ranging from 68 to 90 °C and pressures up to 6 kbar on samples having a nickel content between 31 and 63 at.%. A maximum activation volume of 3.9 cm3/mole was found at 34 at.% nickel. The compositional dependence of ΔV is satisfactorily reproduced by a magnetic-energy continuum model in which it is assumed that the activation free energy of diffusion is essentially ferromagnetic in origin. © 1972 The American Physical Society.

Low Temperature Lattice Parameters And Expansion Coefficients Of Ai2au And Lif Gruneisen Constants Of Lif, Martin E. Straumanis, Jayant S. Shah
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
There is no difference in the thermal expansion behavior of an intermetallic compound (Al2Au) and of an ionic (LiF), except in the magnitude of the expansion coefficients, which for both compounds upon cooling below 40°K approach zero. The lattice parameters of the two compounds mentioned decrease uniformly and without anomalies with lowering the temperature, approaching a constant value below 40°K. The a–T relationship between 40 and 180° is given in form of equations. A pump working on the Joule‐Thomson principle was used for cooling. The GRÜNEISEN parameter, γ, of LiF between 40 and 180°K is a constant, contrary to theoretical …

The Morphology Of Cellular Precipitation In Aluminum Rich Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Santiago Ibarra Jr.
The Morphology Of Cellular Precipitation In Aluminum Rich Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Santiago Ibarra Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
"The morphology of cellular precipitation in Al-29.8wt%Ag alloy has been investigated in bulk specimens by transmission electron microscopy and in solution treated specimens by means of hot stage microscopy. Both cellular and general precipitation were observed to occur simultaneously in quench-aged and isothermally aged alloys. By studying the early stages of precipitation in the hot stage, the mechanism for the growth of cells in Al-Ag alloys was developed. According to this mechanism, the grain boundary allotriomorphs begin to form, the boundary then interacts with the allotriomorphs by bowing, and then either trailing precipitation forms on the allotriomorphs or new lamellae …
Grain Boundary Diffusion In Ionic Crystals, Kulwant Singh Sabharwal
Grain Boundary Diffusion In Ionic Crystals, Kulwant Singh Sabharwal
Doctoral Dissertations
"The diffusion of ¹³¹I in single crystals and along the tilt grain boundaries of pure and calcium chloride doped (142±5 ppm) bicrystals of sodium chloride, grown by Czochralski technique, was investigated using a microtome sectioning technique. Results on bulk diffusion in pure NaCl agree well with the results of earlier investigators and are represented by the D=(504 cm²/sec)exp (-2.27 ev/kT). Enhanced diffusion of ¹³¹I is observed along the grain boundaries and the presence of the dopant lowers the grain boundary diffusivity over the entire temperature range of 430ºC - 570ºC studied in the present investigation. Thermal activation and electrical polarization …
Effects Of Cr-Plating And Environment On The Cracking Of Low Alloy Steels At High Temperatures, Robert C. Tooke
Effects Of Cr-Plating And Environment On The Cracking Of Low Alloy Steels At High Temperatures, Robert C. Tooke
Doctoral Dissertations
"The cracking of low alloy Cr-Mo-V steels under cyclic stress at 1000-1100°C. was studied using a specially designed test apparatus. The results obtained from specimens plated with hard chromium are compared to those of unplated specimens. Tests conducted in gas mixtures of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide showed that a high CO/CO2 ratio retards cracking in both plated and unplated specimens. Both external and internal oxidation are used to explain these results. Inherent microcracks in the hard chromium plating promoted cracking in all CO/CO2 environments. It was also found that these steels are severely embrittled in the presence …
The Effect Of Impurities And Additives On The Electrowinning Of Zinc, Haruhisa Fukubayashi
The Effect Of Impurities And Additives On The Electrowinning Of Zinc, Haruhisa Fukubayashi
Doctoral Dissertations
"The effect of various impurities, commonly found in zinc electro-winning solutions, on the surface morphology of deposited zinc was investigated. Individual additions of the impurities Al, Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ge, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, Ti, PbO₂ , PbSO₄, and HCl were studied. In a few cases additives of animal glue, gum arabic, and Na₂SiO₃, were used individually or in combination, to determine their effect on the surface structure of the deposited zinc. Comparisons were then made with deposits from a pure electrolyte consisting of H₂SO₄ and Zn⁺², 200 and 65 g/l, respectively. The zinc was deposited on a …

Thermal Expansion Of Tungsten At Low Temperatures, Jayant S. Shah, Martin E. Straumanis
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Lattice parameters, thermal expansion coefficients, and Grüneisen parameters of tungsten are determined by an x-ray method in the temperature range of 180-40 K without the use of liquid gases. Lattice parameters are expressed as a function of temperature. Thermal-expansion coefficients decrease with temperature and show no anomaly in contrast to a hypothesis proposed by Featherston and Neighbours. Grüneisen parameters γ are decreasing with temperature in accordance with the theoretical predictions. © 1971 The American Institute of Physics.
The Effect Of Cathodic Protection On The Stress Corrosion Characteristics Of 300m Low Alloy Steel, John Pechonick
The Effect Of Cathodic Protection On The Stress Corrosion Characteristics Of 300m Low Alloy Steel, John Pechonick

"The objective of this investigation was to determine if stress corrosion failure of 300M steel is accelerated by the application of cathodic protection. Testing was conducted on notch tensile specimens that were coated with vacuum cadmium, electroplated cadmium, and vacuum aluminum. All specimens were stressed and placed in an aqueous sodium chloride environment. The failure times for the specimens were monitored and graphs were drawn which characterized the stress corrosion resistance of 300M steel and the cathodic protection systems. Fractography techniques were used to study the failure surfaces to determine the type of failure mechanism. The results of this thesis …

The Anodic Dissolution Reaction Of Insb: Etch Patterns, Electron Number, Anodic Disintegration, And Film Formation, Martin E. Straumanis, Lih Da Hu
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The etching behavior of the inverse {111} planes of undoped, semiconducting, n-type, InSb single crystals was explored. Depending upon the etchant, including anodic dissolution, various etch patterns were obtained on the inverse planes. In general, the etch pits on the In{111} plane were round, and the face was shiny, whereas the face of the inverse plane was dark and rough. The rates of dissolution in the electrolytes used were very low, especially in absence of oxidizers. The components dissolve as In3+ and Sb3 +. At current densities above 40 or 60 mA cm-2 (on Sb{111} or In{111}), growth of a …
