Slm Processing-Microstructure-Mechanical Property Correlation In An Aluminum Alloy Produced By Additive Manufacturing, Bryce Abstetar
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Additive manufacturing has become a highly researched topic in recent years all over the world. The current research evaluates the merits of additive manufacturing based on the mechanical, microstructural, and fracture properties of additive manufactured AlSi10Mg test specimens. The additive manufactured build plates consisted of tensile and fatigue test specimens. They were printed in the 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° orientations relative to the build platform. Tensile and dynamic fatigue tests were conducted followed by microstructural characterization and fracture analysis. A wrought 6061 T6 aluminum alloy was also tested for comparison. Tensile tests revealed similar ultimate tensile strengths for all …

Microstructural Properties And Four-Point Bend Fatigue Behavior Of Ti-6.5al-2zr-1mo-1v Welded Joints By Electron Beam Welding, Peng Liu, Tongguang Zhai, Yuanbin Zhang
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
With the help of a four-point-bend of fatigue rig, high-cycle fatigue tests were carried out on an Ti–6.5Al–2Zr-1Mo-1V titanium alloy at room temperature, 20 Hz and R = 0.1 in ambient air. The test results indicated that the fatigue strength of base metal, 888 MPa, is about 120% of yield strength. The fatigue strength of joints is 814 MPa. It is about 110% of yield strength of base metal. When the loading stress is higher, the fatigue failure region is located in middle weld zone of weld face, which the cracks are propagated along coarse β phase’s grain boundary. When …
Coercivity Enhancement And Gamma Phase Avoidance Of Alnico Alloys, Li Zhang
Coercivity Enhancement And Gamma Phase Avoidance Of Alnico Alloys, Li Zhang
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The promotion of social progress requires greater levels of energy efficiency, quality and productivity. However, these developments usually come at the cost of the environment. Green technologies such as electric vehicles, wind turbine and solar panels are ironically overshadowed by supply limitations and high prices of rare earth elements. Therefore, it is important to find alternative materials to replace those that contain critical elements. Alnico alloys show high magnetization, high Curie temperature (800°C) and good corrosion resistance, making it one of the best candidates to replace neodymium-based magnets used in electric vehicles.
In this thesis, methods controlling shape anisotropy and …

Texture And Microstructure Of Ipvd Copper Manganese Seed In 1 Μm & 70 Nm Wide Damascene Trenches, Robert Stuart Brown
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis describes the grain texture and microstructure of Ionized Physical Vapor Deposition (iPVD) Copper Manganese seed in 1 µm and 70 nm wide damascene trenches. Using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging and diffraction pattern analysis, the grain size and general orientation of the grains were determined. It was found that the 1 µm wide trenches contained larger grains and more texture than that of the 70 nm wide trenches. While this thesis builds upon previous work by Brendan O’Brien in the Dunn group, one significantly different finding will be presented regarding the structure on the sidewall of the trenches. …
Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang
Cryogenic Processing Of Al 7050-T7451 Alloy For Improved Surface Integrity, Bo Huang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Al 7050-T7451 alloy with good combinations of strength, stress corrosion cracking resistance and toughness, is used broadly in the aerospace/aviation industry for fatigue-critical airframe structural components. However, it is also considered as a highly anisotropic alloy as the crack growth behavior along the short transverse direction is very different from the one in the long transverse direction, due to the inhomogeneous microstructure with the elongated grains distributed in the work material used in the sheet/plate applications. Further processes on these materials are needed to improve its mechanical and material properties and broaden its applications.
The material with ultra-fine or nano …

Processing Of Al-12si-Tnm Composites By Selective Laser Melting And Evaluation Of Compressive And Wear Properties, Konda Prashanth, Sergio Scudino, Anil Chaubey, Lukas Löber, Pei Wang, Hooyar Attar, Frank Schimansky, Florian Pyczak, Jürgen Eckert
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Al-12Si (80 vol%)-Ti52.4Al42.2Nb4.4Mo0.9B0.06 (at.%) (TNM) composites were successfully produced by the selective laser melting (SLM). Detailed structural and microstructural analysis shows the formation of the Al6MoTi intermetallic phase due to the reaction of the TNM reinforcement with the Al-12Si matrix during SLM. Compression tests reveal that the composites exhibit significantly improved properties (∼140 and ∼160 MPa higher yield and ultimate compressive strengths, respectively) compared with the Al-12Si matrix. However, the samples break at ∼6% total strain under compression, thus showing a reduced plasticity of the composites. Sliding wear tests were carried out for both the Al-12Si matrix and the Al-12Si-TNM …
Thermal Processing And Mechanical Properties Of Beta Phase Titanium Alloys For Biomedical Applications, Ethan Wood
Thermal Processing And Mechanical Properties Of Beta Phase Titanium Alloys For Biomedical Applications, Ethan Wood
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The past few decades have seen an increase in the use of beta titanium alloys as structural biomaterials. Their combination of excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, along with a lower Young’s modulus than stainless steel, cobalt-chromium and commercially pure titanium make the beta titanium alloys ideal biomaterials. This work evaluates the use of three beta titanium alloys for biomedical applications. Three beta titanium alloys, Ti 15-3-3-3, Ti SP-700 and Ti Beta-C, underwent thermal processing to optimize mechanical properties. The alloys were subjected to tensile testing, hardness testing, fatigue testing, optical microscopy and SEM fracture analysis in order to …

A combination of severe plastic deformation by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and bake hardening (BH) was used to produce high strength ultrafine-grained AA6061 aluminum alloy. 2, 4 and 8 passes of ECAP were performed, and the bake hardenability of samples was tested by 6% pre-straining followed by baking at 200 °C for 20 min. The microstructures obtained for various passes of ECAP were characterized by XRD, EBSD, and TEM techniques. The microstructures were refined from an average grain size of 20 µm to 212 nm after 8 passes of ECAP. Maximum bake hardenability of 110 MPa, and final yield …

Computational Study Of Microstructure-Propertymechanism Relations In Ferroic Composites, Fengde D. Ma
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Ferroic materials, as notable members of smart materials, have been widely used in applications that perform sensing, actuation and control. The macroscopic property change of ferroic materials may become remarkably large during ferroic phase transition, leading to the fact that the macroscopic properties can be tuned by carefully applying a suitable external field (electric, magnetic, stress). To obtain an enhancement in physical and/or mechanical properties, different kinds of ferroic composites have been fabricated. The properties of a ferroic composite are determined not only by the properties and relative amounts of the constituent phases, but also by the microstructure of individual …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Ferroelectric materials, as a large family exploited for the application of sensors, transducers and random access memories, open up a remarkable ground both for fundamental science and industry. Dielectric and piezoelectric properties are of the most interest in ferroelectric materials, which motivate research to enhance ferroelectric properties based on various application purposes. Among the multitudinous candidates in ferroelectric family, pseudo binary solid solutions with ABO3 lattice structure attract special attention in virtue of their large strain response when applying external loading. Furthermore, existence of morphological phase boundary (MPB) on their phase diagrams shed light on tuning material compositions to …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Direct Metal Deposition Parameters On The Characteristics Of The Deposited Layers, Tarak A. Amine, Joseph William Newkirk, Frank W. Liou
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multilayer direct laser deposition (DLD) is a fabrication process through which parts are fabricated by creating a molten pool into which metal powder is injected as particles. During fabrication, complex thermal activity occurs in different regions of the build; for example, newly deposited layers will reheat previously deposited layers. The objective of this study was to provide insight into the thermal activity that occurs during the DLD process. This work focused on the effect of the laser parameters of newly deposited layers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the previously deposited layers in order to characterize these effects to …
Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman
Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman
Open Access Theses
Tungsten remains a leading candidate for plasma facing component (PFC) in future fusion devices. This is in large part due to its strong thermal and mechanical properties. The ITER project has already chosen to use an all tungsten divertor. Despite having a high melting temperature and low erosion rate, tungsten faces a large variety of issues when subject to fusion like conditions. These include embrittlement, melting, and extreme morphology change (growth of fuzz nanostructure). The work presented here investigates mechanisms that drive surface morphology change in tungsten materials exposed to fusion relevant plasmas. Specifically, tungsten materials of different grain sizes …
