The influence of naphthalene water reducer on corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in concrete was studied by the methods of corrosion potential measurement,linear polarization and EIS test.The values of concrete resistance(Rc) and polarization resistance(Rp) of the samples with naphthalene water reducer were higher than those without naphthalene water reducer,especially in the concrete with 0.2 percent naphthalene water reducer.A suitable amount of water reducer can improve the pore structures of concrete,increase the concrete compactness and impermeability,and decrease corrosion rate of rebars in concrete.

A variety of studies were performed using existing and newly proposed techniques and instrumentation to further the understanding of nondestructive testing of concrete. A new combined stress wave propagation method was developed that combined the existing methods of the spectral analysis of surface waves, impact echo, and free-free resonant column experimental and analysis techniques. The method was used to determine the stiffness profile and location of embedded voids in a concrete tunnel lining modeled as a three layer concrete slab. Pervious concrete is concrete made by eliminating most or all of the fine aggregate (sand) in the concrete mix, which allows interconnected void spaces to be formed in the hardened product. These interconnected void spaces allow the concrete to transmit water at relatively high rates. The main objective of this project was to conduct research on the potential application of pervious concrete in agricultural settings, specifically for use in animal feed lots, manure storage pads, animal manure and bedding compost facilities, or floor systems in animal buildings. The effects of crack and ethanolamine on corrosion of rebar in concrete were studied by measuring the distribution of corrosion potential and polarization resistance of iron wires in 10% NaCl solution.The results showed that the diffusion of water,oxygen and chloric ion toward concrete was accelerated by the crack which intensified the nonuniform corrosion of iron wire with the regions near to crack as anode and the uncracked regions as cathode.Ethanolamine could diffuse into the body of concrete and absorb on the surface of iron wire,which reduced iron corrosion evidently and successfully inhibited the nonuniform corrosion caused by crack without changing …

Most of the available shear models for reinforced concrete rely on empirical formulations. In this study, a rational shear stress function is used to define the shear stress–strain envelope for reinforced concrete. Cyclic rules are proposed to define the loading, unloading and reloading relationships for reinforced concrete under shear stress reversals. A normal stress function describing the cyclic relationship of concrete under axial stress is also introduced. The proposed functions are verified using experimental data of reinforced concrete panels tested under monotonic and cyclic loading. Subsequently, the normal and shear stress functions along with their cyclic rules are integrated in …

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) was employed to study the influence of chloride on the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in concrete. In Nyquist plot, the spectrum consists of two semicircles, indicating that the reinforced concrete system contained two time constants,one derived from electrical double layer of reinforcing steel and the other from the deposition film of concrete layer. The depressed semicircle in lower frequency featured the non-faradic behavior of the electrical double layer (EDL) deviated from idea capacitor due to diffusive effect which was attributed to the surface roughness of rebar and the inhomogenity of concrete layer. In the present paper, the application of the coulostatic method to the corrosion of steel in concrete was reviewed. By comparing with other electrochemical techniques, the results obtained in the previous work reveal that the coulostatic method is an interesting alternative to the usual procedures for estimation of corrosion rate, and is better than them in some respects. The main advantages are as follows. The signal to be used can be instantaneous and as small as desired, so the electrode is minimally perturted during the measuring process. The mechanism of FeS electrode process has been investigated by using linear cyclic voltammetry. The electrode porcess of FeS is accompanied with the formation and dissolution of insoluble FeS and controlled by ohmic resistance. The peak currents and potentials on the cyclic voltammograms are dependent lineally on the square root of the scan rates. According to this, an ohmic resistance controlling model of FeS electrode has been put forward, and the relative functions between peak currents or potentials and scan rates have been deduced. The theoretical deduction is corresponding to the results of the experiments.

A linear polarization method was applied to measure corrosion rate of reinforcing bar of concrete in situ. Generally in the experiment, the area and shape of the reinforcing bar as a working electrode can be changed and adjusted according to our needs. But polarization area cannot be defined when reinforcing bar is polarized in situ, so that a real Rp can't be obtained. Thus the purpose of present work is to improve the measurement system. A new polymer E-T was synthesized and used as a corrosion inhibitor for reinforced concrete. The inhibitive behavior and mechanism were studied with linear polarization, Tafel polarization, EIS and XPS method in simulated pore solution system with concrete samples. The result showed that the polymer was a mixing type inhibitor. A 1% dosage was sufficient to imhibit the corrosion of steel in simulated pore solution system. The salt endurance was enhanced from 0.02 mol/L to 0.10 mol/L. The result also showed the good synergetic effect of NaNO2, especially in low NaNO2 concentration. The EIS showed that E-T …
