Comparative Characterization Of Ni-Base Superalloys Fabricated By Laser And Electron Beam Melting Technologies, Krista Amato
Comparative Characterization Of Ni-Base Superalloys Fabricated By Laser And Electron Beam Melting Technologies, Krista Amato
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Nickel-base superalloys have been used in cast and wrought, and powder metallurgy forms for nearly four decades for industrial and automotive applications. One drawback of cast alloys is that upon solidification, there is minimal microstructural control. Another issue to be improved is to eliminate the limitations of shapes and forms of fabricated alloys.
Rapid prototyping is a new technology of additive manufacturing that shows to be promising for the freeform fabrication of novel superalloys, including nickel-base alloys. New rapid manufacturing technologies allow us to produce parts in any shape that can be designed by computer-aided design (CAD) software. Additionally, the …
The Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors When Used As Radiation Dosimeters, Des Baccini
The Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors When Used As Radiation Dosimeters, Des Baccini
Theses : Honours
The effects of Gamma Radiation on Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs), when used as a radiation dosimeter, was proposed. The focus of this study centred on the FBG performance, and in particular the Bragg Wavelength Shift (BWS) whilst being exposed to ionizing radiation. Current research suggests that certain types of fibres manufactured by varying methods produce different results. The different responses to exposure from gamma irradiation between Germanium (Ge) doped optical fibres, with and without Hydrogen loading, along with the standard SMF-28 fibre with Hydrogen, were used and results noted and compared to previous work. The FBG’s in each fibre were …

Copper Indium Diselenide Nanowire Arrays In Alumina Membranes Deposited On Molybdenum And Other Back Contact Substrates, Bhavananda R. Nadimpally
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Heterojunctions of CuInSe2 (CIS) nanowires with cadmium sulfide (CdS) were fabricated demonstrating for the first time, vertically aligned nanowires of CIS in the conventional Mo/CIS/CdS stack. These devices were studied for their material and electrical characteristics to provide a better understanding of the transport phenomena governing the operation of heterojunctions involving CIS nanowires. Removal of several key bottlenecks was crucial in achieving this. For example, it was found that to fabricate alumina membranes on molybdenum substrates, a thin interlayer of tungsten had to be inserted. A qualitative model was proposed to explain the difficulty in fabricating anodized aluminum oxide …

Investigation Of Nbnx Thin Films And Nanoparticles Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition And Thermal Diffusion, Ashraf Hassan Farha
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Niobium nitride films (NbNx) were grown on Nb and Si (100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser heating, and thermal diffusion methods. Niobium nitride films were deposited on Nb substrates using PLD with a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm, 40 ns pulse width, and 10 Hz repetition rate) at different laser fluences, different nitrogen background pressures and deposition temperatures. The effect of changing PLD parameters for films done by PLD was studied. The seen observations establish guidelines for adjusting the laser parameters to achieve the desired morphology and phase of the grown NbNx films.
When the …

Magneto-optic (MO) garnets are used in a range of applications in nanophotonics, integrated optics, communications and imaging. Bi-substituted iron garnets of different compositions are the most useful class of materials in applied magneto- optics due to their excellent MO properties (large Faraday effect) and record-high MO figure of merit among all semi- transparent dielectrics. It is highly desirable to synthesise garnets which possess simultaneously a high MO figure of merit and large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. However, the simultaneous optimization of several material properties and parameters can be difficult in single-layer garnet thin films, and it is also challenging to prepare …

Process Study And Control Of Electron Beam Melting Technology Using Infrared Thermography, Jorge Mireles
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
An IR camera was installed in an Arcam A2 system (Arcam AB, Mölndal, Sweeden) and layer-by-layer image acquisition was achieved. The camera's capability to detect manufacturing defects was evaluated by implementing computer vision techniques using LabVIEW measurement and programming software (National Instruments, Austin, TX). Thermal maps acquired by the IR camera allowed layer-by-layer part temperature to be recorded. A core objective of this research was to study the impact of processing temperature on EBM-fabricated Ti-6Al-4V parts and achieve controlled mechanical properties. In this research, build variations were achieved by modifying parameters that change processing temperature from the standard processing temperature. …

Experimental Study On The Fabrication Of Advanced Materials For Energy Applications Using High Energy Mechanical Milling, Ashvin Kumar Narayana Swamy
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The reaction of aluminum (Al) powder with water has the potential for on demand hydrogen generation. Conventional Al powders, however, react with water slowly due to a highly protective oxide layer on the particle surface. Current methods for Al activation involve harmful and expensive materials. The nano-scale Al powders also remain very expensive and have problems such as a large amount of oxide on the surface. The use of aluminum in an energy generation cycle is also hindered by the fact that, although Al is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, its recovery from ore consumes a lot …

Effect Of Hafnium-Incorporation On The Microstructure And Dielectric Properties Of Cobalt Ferrite Ceramics, Stephen Josiah Wells
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The effect of hafnium ion (Hf4+) incorporation in cobalt ferrite (CFO) was studied. Samples of Hf substituted CFO ceramic (CoFe2-xHfxO4), were synthesized in the laboratory with hafnium concentrations ranging from x=0.000 to x=0.200. X-ray diffraction scans show that the Hafnium CFO crystalizes in the inverse spinel phase. Inclusion of hafnium causes lattice expansion, increasing the lattice parameter from 8.374 í? for pure CoFe2O4 to 8.391 í? for the highest concentration of hafnium tested (x=0.020). The dielectric properties of CFO are greatly enhanced by inclusion of hafnium. The enhancement is due to the …

Microstructure And Properties For Titanium Aluminide Superalloy Prototypes Fabricated By Electron Beam Melting And Thermally Processed, Jennifer Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Gamma TiAl has been considered to be an ideal replacement for Ni-base superalloy aerospace applications, particularly in weight-critical applications. While bulk, fully dense gamma-TiAl is 50% less dense than Ni-base superalloys, it also has excellent mechanical properties at high temperature (up to ~800°C). Pre alloyed (Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb) powder was used to fabricate solid, fully dense (3.85 g/cm3) components and foam components with densities ranging from 0.33 g/cm3 to 0.46 g/cm3 by electron beam melting (EBM). A 10:1 blend of 2-phase TiAl (Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb in a/o) : Inconel 625 (Ni-22Cr-6Mo-2Nb in a/o) pre-alloyed powders produced …

New Topics On Nanoindentation Of Polymers And Composite Materials, Ricardo Martinez-Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, nanoindentation was used to determine Young's modulus of homogeneous plastic materials as well as inhomogeneous epoxy woven fabric composites using various indenters. In the first part, homogeneous PMMA and polycarbonate were characterized using conical and spherical indenters. The conventional approach of the inverse analysis was modified in order to account for effects obtained during spherical nanoindentation. The experimental results were verified using FEA analysis in ABAQUS. It was found that viscous effects were present in conical nanoindentations which led to an overestimation of contact stiffness. The second part, the response of carbon and glass fiber woven fabric …

Rbd2po4: Room Temprature Synthesis, Chemical And Structural Stablity Upon Heating, Masoud Mollaee
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Monoclinic RbD2PO4 polycrystals were synthesized via the room temperature crystallization of RbH2PO4 dissolved in D2O. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) data collected at T=25 ºC indicate that this deuterated compound crystallizes in space group P21/m with unit cell parameters a=7.688í?, b=6.192í?, c=4.781í? and β=109.02°, and is isomorphic with the intermediate-temperature phase of its hydrogenated counterpart rubidium dihydrogen phosphate (RDP). We found no evidence of previously reported [Phase Transitions 80, 17 (2007)] polymorphic phase transition in rubidium dideuterium phosphate (DRDP) upon heating from room temperature to 210 ºC. All lattice parameters vary smoothly within this temperature range, demonstrating that the P21/m phase …

The prediction of spectral phonon relaxation time, mean-free-path, and thermal conductivity can provide significant insights into the thermal conductivity of bulk and nanomaterials, which are important for thermal management and thermoelectric applications. We perform frequency-domain normal mode analysis (NMA) on pure bulk argon and pure bulk germanium. Spectral phonon properties, including the phonon dispersion, relaxation time, mean free path, and thermal conductivity of argon and germanium at different temperatures have been calculated. We find the dependence of phonon relaxation time τ on frequency ω and temperature T vary from ~ω-1.3 to ~ω-1.8 and ~T-0.8 to ~T-1.8 …
High Speed Turning Of Compacted Graphite Iron (Cgi) Using Controlled Modulation, Tyler Paul Stalbaum
High Speed Turning Of Compacted Graphite Iron (Cgi) Using Controlled Modulation, Tyler Paul Stalbaum
Open Access Theses
Compacted graphite iron (CGI) is a material which emerged as a candidate material to replace cast iron (CI) in the automotive industry for engine block castings. Its thermal and mechanical properties allow the CGI-based engines to operate at higher cylinder pressures and temperatures than CI-based engines, allowing for lower fuel emissions and increased fuel economy. However, these same properties together with the thermomechanical wear mode in the CGI-CBN system result in poor machinability and inhibit CGI from seeing wide spread use in the automotive industry.
In industry, machining of CGI is done only at low speeds, less than V = …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The objective of this paper was to predict the thermomechanical behavior of 2080 aluminum alloy reinforced with SiC particles using the Mori–Tanaka theory combined with the finite element method. The influences of particle volume fraction, stiffness, aspect ratio and orientation were examined in terms of effective Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composite. The microstructure induced local stress and strain field was obtained through the numerical models of the representative volume element. Results suggested that particle volume fraction had significant impact on the effective Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and CTE of the composite. Stiffer …

High throughput (combinatorial) materials science methodology is a relatively new research paradigm that offers the promise of rapid and efficient materials screening, optimization, and discovery. The paradigm started in the pharmaceutical industry but was rapidly adopted to accelerate materials research in a wide variety of areas. High throughput experiments are characterized by synthesis of a “library” sample that contains the materials variation of interest (typically composition), and rapid and localized measurement schemes that result in massive data sets. Because the data are collected at the same time on the same “library” sample, they can be highly uniform with respect to …

Nanometric thin films are used widely throughout various industries and for various applications. Metallic thin films, specifically, are relied upon extensively in the microelectronics industry, among others. For example, alloy thin films are being investigated for CMOS applications, tungsten films find uses as contacts and diffusion barriers, and copper is used often as interconnect material. Appropriate metrology methods must therefore be used to characterize the physical properties of these films. Xray scattering experiments are well suited for the investigation of nano-scaled systems, and are the focus of this doctoral dissertation. Emphasis is placed on (1) phase identification of polycrystalline thin …

Development And Characterization Of Nanoparticlee Enhancements In Pyrolysis-Derived High Temperature Composites, James Mckee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thermal protection systems, which are commonly used to protect spacecraft during atmospheric entry, have traditionally been made of materials which are traditionally high in manufacturing costs for both the materials needed and the manufacturing complexity, such as carbon-carbon composites and aerogels. [1] In addition to their manufacturing costs, these materials are also limited in their strength, such as PICA, in a way that necessitate the use of tiles as opposed to single structures because they are not capable of supporting larger structures. [2] The limitations of polymer reinforced composites have limited their entry into these applications, except for pyrolyzed composite …

The Processing Of Aluminum Gasarites Via Thermal Decomposition Of Interstitial Hydrides, Joseph James Licavoli
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Gasarite structures are a unique type of metallic foam containing tubular pores. The original methods for their production limited them to laboratory study despite appealing foam properties. Thermal decomposition processing of gasarites holds the potential to increase the application of gasarite foams in engineering design by removing several barriers to their industrial scale production. The following study characterized thermal decomposition gasarite processing both experimentally and theoretically. It was found that significant variation was inherent to this process therefore several modifications were necessary to produce gasarites using this method. Conventional means to increase porosity and enhance pore morphology were studied. Pore …

Structural Tailoring Of Nanoporous Metals And Study Of Their Mechanical Behavior, Lei Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Nanoporous (np) metals and alloys are the subject of increasing research attention due to their high surface-area-to-volume ratio. Numerous methods exist to create np metals, with dealloying being a common approach. By dissolving one or more elements from certain alloy systems, porous structure can be generated. Utilizing this method, multiple np metals, including np-Ni, np-Ir, and np-Au were created. By carefully adjusting precursor type and dealloying conditions for each system, nanoporous Ni/Ir/Au with different morphologies and even controllable ligament/pore size were achieved.
The mechanical behavior of porous materials is related to their fully dense counterparts by scaling equations. Established scaling …

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Metallic materials play important roles in providing electrical, thermal, and mechanical functions in electronic devices and systems. The understanding of the electrical-thermal-mechanical interaction caused by the passage of electric current with high density is important to improve the performance and reliability of electronic assembly and packaging. The electromechanical interaction on the deformation behavior of copper and tin is studied in this work.
The electromechanical response of Cu strips was studied by passing a DC electric current. The electric resistance linearly increased with time before the occurrence of electric fusing. The electrothermal interaction led to the buckling of the Cu strips …
Infiltrated Composite Electrodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Aligul Buyukaksoy
Infiltrated Composite Electrodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Aligul Buyukaksoy
Doctoral Dissertations
"Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are electrochemical devices which can convert chemical energy to electrical energy with efficiencies up to 60%. In order for SOFCs to be favorable energy conversion devices, the power obtained from a unit volume should be improved. This corresponds to minimized resistances from SOFC components (composite electrodes and electrolyte). Stability of the generated power is another important issue. Degradation of SOFCs with time due to microstructural processes or chemical reactions that occur at operating conditions; and due to reduction/oxidation cycles caused by the changes in the anode has been an important obstacle that has prevented the …

Effect Of Vortex Hotspots On The Radio-Frequency Surface Resistance Of Superconductors, A. Gurevich, G. Ciovati
Physics Faculty Publications
We present detailed experimental and theoretical investigations of hotspots produced by trapped vortex bundles and their effect on the radio-frequency (rf) surface resistance Rs of superconductors at low temperatures. Our measurements of Rs, combined with the temperature mapping and laser scanning of a 2.36-mm-thick Nb plate incorporated into a 3.3-GHz Nb resonator cavity cooled by the superfluid He at 2 K, revealed spatial scales and temperature distributions of hotspots and showed that they can be moved or split by thermal gradients produced by the scanning laser beam. These results, along with the observed hysteretic field dependence of Rs which can …
