The effects of process parameters and friction stir processing (FSP) run configurations on the stability of nugget microstructure at elevated temperatures were evaluated. Cast plates of an Al-7Si-0.6Mg alloy were friction stir processed using a combination of tool rotation rates and tool traverse speeds. All single pass runs showed some extent of abnormal grain growth (AGG), whereas multi-pass runs were more resistant to AGG. Additionally, higher tool rotation rate was found to be beneficial for controlling AGG. These effects were analyzed by comparing the result of this work with other published results and AGG models. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

The Relationship Between Induced Fluid Structure And Boundary Slip In Nanoscale Polymer Films, Nikolai V. Priezjev Nov 2010

The Relationship Between Induced Fluid Structure And Boundary Slip In Nanoscale Polymer Films, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The molecular mechanism of slip at the interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive smooth surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. In agreement with our previous studies on slip flow of shear-thinning fluids, it is shown that the slip length passes through a local minimum at low shear rates and then increases rapidly at higher shear rates. We found that at sufficiently high shear rates, the slip flow over atomically flat crystalline surfaces is anisotropic. It is demonstrated numerically that the friction coefficient at the liquid-solid interface (the ratio of viscosity and slip length) undergoes a transition from a …

Synthesis Of Mild–Hard Aao Templates For Studying Magnetic Interactions Between Metal Nanowires, Jin-Hee Lim, Aurelian Rotaru, Seong-Gi Min, Leszek Malkinski, John B. Wiley

Physics Faculty Publications

The sequential application of mild and hard anodization techniques in the fabrication of porous aluminamembranes allows one to decrease the number of continuous pores in anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) templates. Initially, standard mild anodization techniques were used to create porous templates with 100 nm interpore distances and 70 nm pore diameters. Hard anodization treatment on the same membrane then produced interpore distances of about 265 nm with diameters of 110 nm. At the interface between the two anodization steps, many of the mild-side pores were terminated to create a mild–hard membrane (Mi–Ha AAO) where the functional interpore distances were 200–300 …

Hydrogen Absorption Induced Slow Crack Growth In Austenitic Stainless Steels For Petrochemical Pressure Vessel Industries, Ronnie Higuchi Rusli

Makara Journal of Technology

Type 304L and type 309 austenitic stainless steels were tested either by exposed to gaseous hydrogen or undergoing polarized cathodic charging. Slow crack growth by straining was observed in type 304L, and the formation of α‘ martensite was indicated to be precursor for such cracking. Gross plastic deformation was observed at the tip of the notch, and a single crack grew slowly from this region in a direction approximately perpendicular to the tensile axis. Martensite formation is not a necessary condition for hydrogen embrittlement in the austenitic phase.
