Research indicates significant cheating at institutions of higher learning; however, evidence indicates that a well-designed and clearly-communicated campus honor code might have a mitigating effect. This is the impetus behind the implementation of an Academic Honor Code Policy at a private university beginning in the fall of 2004. This situation presented a unique opportunity to investigate the potential of an academic honor code to change the culture and behavior at a university. Six different engineering courses were taught using aspects of the classical ballet instruction model in organization, teaching methods, and learning strategies. There was a strong focus on performance. The courses spanned sophomore to senior levels. Some aspects of the ballet model worked well: setting rules for the Sacred Space for learning, the beginning activity (“stretch”), the overall organization of the class session, communicating the known ideal, including historical background, and using demonstrations. Most engineering educators excel at planning and conducting technical research in their field, but few are proficient doing this for a project in engineering education. Recently, however, there has been increased emphasis on conducting rigorous research in engineering education. This paper provides practical advice for planning and conducting such research. The authors use their long term project to predict academic dishonesty in engineering college students as a case study representing one approach to research in engineering education. An apparatus for delivering a fluidic media to a wafer includes a housing defining a process chamber. A fluidic media delivery member is coupled to the process chamber. The purpose of this research was to evaluate and compare the physical properties of knitted fabrics in bilaminate and trilaminate composite forms used in Foam-In-Place (FIP) manufacturing technology for automotive applications. Seven physical tests employed by the automotive industry to evaluate the physical properties of fabric were used. The factors tested were Elongation, Boardiness, Weight, Thickness, Stretch and Set, Breaking Radius, and Ravel. Each test was performed according to standard test methods established by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) or the specifications of tier-one automotive seat suppliers. In the past decade, layer-by-layer (LbL) nanoassembly has been used as a tool for immobilization and surface modification of materials with applications in biology and physical sciences. Often, in such applications, LbL assembly is integrated with various techniques to form functional surface coatings and immobilized matrices. In this work, integration of LbL with microfabrication and microfluidics, and tissue engineering are explored. In an effort to integrate microfabrication with LbL nanoassembly, microchannels were fabricated using soft-lithography and the surface of these channels was used for the immobilization of materials using LbL and laminar flow patterning. The electronic structure and spin-dependent tunneling in epitaxial Fe/MgO/Fe(001) tunnel junctions are studied using first-principles calculations. For small MgO barrier thickness the minority-spin resonant bands at the two interfaces make a significant contribution to the tunneling conductance for the antiparallel magnetization, whereas these bands are, in practice, mismatched by disorder and/or small applied bias for the parallel magnetization. This explains the experimentally observed decrease in tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) for thin MgO barriers. We predict that a monolayer of Ag epitaxially deposited at the interface between Fe and MgO suppresses tunneling through the interface band and may thus be used to …

Multi-layer thin films are important components in many micro-electronic devices. These films are often used when a single film layer is insufficient to meet devices specifications. The continued reduction in component size has the side effect of increasing the thermal stress on these films and consequently the devices they comprise. Understanding the transfer of heat-energy at the micro-scale is important for thermal processing using a pulse-laser. Often, micro-voids may be found in processed devices. This is due to thermal expansion. Such defects may cause an amplification of neighboring defects resulting in severe damage and consequently the failure of the device. …

Inherent limitations of traditional lithography have prompted the search for means of achieving self-assembly of nano-scale structures and networks for the next generation of electronic and photonic devices. The nanowire, the basic building block of a nanocircuit, has recently become the focus of intense research. Reports on nanowire synthesis and assembly have appeared in the scientific literature, which include Vapor-Liquid-Solid mechanism, template-based electrochemical fabrication, solvothermal or wet chemistry, and assembly by fluid alignment or microchannel networks. Modeling a delivery train system is more challenging than traditional forklift systems as the delivery train model consists of a tugger, cart and a controller that combine to deliver materials within a manufacturing plant. Also, the decision logic for selection of carts and tuggers, joining of loads to particular delivery trains is more complicated than forklift systems. Simulation software such as Arena, Automod and Flexsim do not provide direct support for modeling delivery train systems.

A stable micro-plasma jet in air was generated from a direct current discharge between two molybdenum electrodes (0.25 mm thick) that were separated by an alumina insulator of the same thickness. The after-glow plasma jet was generated by blowing air through the space between the electrodes. A change from laminar to turbulent flow was observed at a gas flow rate of 140 ml/min. The length of the plasma jet increased with flow rate in the laminar mode to approximately 15 mm and decreased in the turbulent mode.

Improvement of superconducting properties, such as critical current density Jc and trapped magnetic field, of melt textured YBa2Cu3O7-x (Y123) require introducing of effective pinning sites, e.g., nonsuperconducting inclusions, twin boundaries and other defects. It has been shown that addition of small quantities of BaCeO3 (< 0.5 wt.%) into Y123 results in an increase of the J/sub c/. However, higher cerium concentrations affect the solidification process and inhibit the growth of melt textured Y123 single crystals. In this study, the effect of BaCeO/sub 3/ additions on the growth and microstructural development of melt textured Y123 single crystals were investigated. The relationship between the solidification kinetics, microstructural development and superconducting properties of Y123 melt textured single crystals with cerium additives is discussed.

Human thymidylate synthase, a target in cancer chemotherapy, was crystallized from PEG 3350 with 30 mM ammonium sulfate (AS) in the crystallization medium. The crystals are isomorphous with the high-salt crystals (~2.0 M AS) and the structure has been solved and refined (R = 22.6%, Rfree = 24.3%) at 1.8 Å resolution. The high- and low-AS-concentration structures are quite similar, with loop 181-197 is in the inactive conformation. Also, residues 95-106 and 129-135 (eukaryotic inserts region) show high mobility as assessed by poor electron density and high values of crystallographic temperature factors (residues 1-25 and 108-129 are disordered in both …

This research focuses on experimental investigation of rate-dependent behavior and short-term creep of PMR-15 neat resin at 23 and 288°C. Effect of loading rate on monotonic stress-strain behavior was explored in monotonic tests at constant stress rates of 0.75, 0.075, and 0.0075 MPa/s at 23 and 288°C. In addition, effect of prior stress rate on creep behavior was explored in creep tests preceded by uninterrupted loading to a target stress. This study is to investigate the high temperature hot corrosion behavior of aluminide coating and platinum-aluminide coating on Ni-base superalloy MAR-M247. On the platinum-aluminide, aluminide and the base metal, respectively, by the salt spraying method. The resistances to hot corrosion of platinum-aluminide coating, aluminide coating and the base metal were evaluated by the variations of weight gains. Aluminide and platinum-aluminide coating showed significanty beneficial effect on inhibiting the hot corrosion of MAR-M247. But that of the platinum-aluminide coating was even much better. The aluminide coating surface was composed of β-NiAl, and that of the platinum-aluminide coating was PtAl2. …

The nano-sized NiO materials were synthesized by solid phase method and sol-gel method. The synthesis conditions were optimized by DSC and TG techniques. The sol-gel method was optimized by changing the solvent and regulating the solution's pH for preparing NiO material. The structure and morphology of the materials were also characterized by means of XRD and TEM techniques, and the electrochemical performances of the materials were studied by the galvanostatically charge and discharge experiments.

The catalytic splitting decomposition of carbon nanotubes isprocessed by dispersing with dilute nitric acid and thermal oxidation. A Nafion emulsion method for fuel cell membrane-electrode-assembly (MEA) preparation was reported for the first time in this paper. 5 %(by mass) Nafion alcohol solution and non-polar solvent (e.g., cyclohexane) were ultrasonicallymixed to produce Nafion emulsion. The catalyst ink prepared using the thus-obtained Nafion emulsion can be directly cast onto Nafion membrane to make MEA. This method is simple in operation, and effectively preventsthe Nafion membrane swelling, hence is suitable for large-scale application. The MEA thus-prepared showed comparable catalyst efficiencywith respect to the popular transfer-method, and the preliminary performance in room-temperature H2/O2 fuel cell test was satisfying.

The lifetime and performance of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) were investigatedto understand the correlation between thestructure of catalysts/membrane and cell performanceversus time. The cell polarization and performance curves were obtained during the DMFC operation with the time. The catalysts and Nafion membrane of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) from the lifetime test were comprehensively examined by XRD, HRTEM, FTIR and Raman spectroscope techniques. The results revealed that there was significant performance degradation during the first 200 hours operation; while the degradation was slowing down between 200 and 704 hours operation. The degradation became worse after 1002 h operation. …

The 430 stainless steels have been hot dipped in the molten Al-6.5%Si melts from 680 to 800℃, respectively. The effects of the hot dipping temperature and time on the thickness of the internal alloy layer have been investigated. The activation energy of the growth kinetic of aluminized layer was also calculated. The results showed that the thickness of aluminized layer increased with increasing dipping time and temperature. Besides, the growth kinetic of aluminized layer obeys parabolic rate law. The FeAl3 and Fe2Al5 were formed by the inward diffusion, and the interface of intermetallic layer will be …

The test of chloride ion penetration based on the standards of ASTM C1202-93 is applied to evaluate the anti-corrosion performance of concrete in this research. Concrete specimens were produced according to ACI 318-89 mixture proportioning design and the Desenfied Mixture Design Algorithm (DMDA) and were measured the 6-hour coulombs at the age of 91 days. Results show that w/b is not the factor influencing chloride penetration of ACI concrete, as the ion penetration of ACI specimens is all higher than 2 000 Coulombs and can even be poorer than 10 000 Coulombs. The behaviors of dissociative adsorption of ethanol on roughened platinum-ruthenium electrode with high activity of SERS were studied by using cyclic voltammetry and in-situ surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, surface enhanced Raman spectra of dissociative adsorption of ethanol on Pt electrode in acid was obtained for the first time. It is shown that the Pt-Ru could lower the over-potential of CO oxidation when compared to Pt electrode. The results show that the ethanol in acid medium can be self-dissociated at Pt-Ru electrode to produce CO, which discourage the further oxidation of ethanol, some information of Pt-C and Pt-C-Pt stretching vibration from …

The role of Polyaspartic acid in the corrosion inhibition of 45# carbon steel in sulphuric acid solution has been investigated by polarization curve andelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The influences of the concentration and the temperature of PASP on the corrosion inhibition efficiency were determined. The results indicated that the PASP as the corrosion inhibitor mainly inhibitated the anode; within the experiment temperature, the inhibitor efficiency decreased with the raising of the temperature and PASP had a good inhibiting performance at 10℃, the corrosion inhibition efficiency of PASP for carbon steel increased with the increase of the concentration of PASP when …

The electrochemical behavior of spinel LiMn2O4 electrode in ionic liquid electrolyte was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and ACimpedance techniques. The results reveal that the spinel LiMn2O4 can be effectively cycled in electrolyte based on the ionic liquid with discharge capacity of 108.2mAh/g and Coulombic efficiency of more than 90% in the first cycle at room temperature. Temperature and current density play an important role in the electrode performances. Cytosine adsorbed on a roughened gold electrode has been investigated by using electrochemical cyclic voltammetry and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results indicate that cytosine was adsorbed on the Au electrode in a perpendicular orientation via the N3 position. As the maximum enhancement of ring breathing mode appears at negative potentials compared with other modes, both the electromagnetic enhancement and the charge transfer mechanism were considered to contribute to the SERS intensity. A Conjugate Dissolution/Deposition Behavior In Thin Layer Electrodeposition, Sun Bin, Xian-Wu Zou, Zhun-Zhi Jin

During the electrodeposition of lead, the dendrite deposit segregates from the cathode due to the disturbance of hydrogen gas. The segregated deposit could move toward the anode spontaneously rather than keep stationary. The studies show that this novel phenomenon was caused by the conjugate electrodissolution and electrodeposition reactions taking place at two ends of the isolated segment of the deposit. The mechanism inducing this phenomenon is suggested.

The corrosion behavior of API Spec X60 pipeline steels, including electric resistance welding(ERW) and Seamless (SML) types, in sea mud gathered fromYangtse River estuaryof the East China Sea was investigatedthrough linear polarization resistance, potentio-dynamic polarizationand electrochemical impedance measurements. The result indicate the improved corrosion resistance of SML in sea mud. The oxygen diffusion in the cathode zone determines the corrosion behavior of pipeline steel in sea mud.
