Recent studies on precipitation-hardened high-entropy alloys (HEAs) demonstrate their high strength and thermal stability, making them promising materials for high-temperature structural applications such as nuclear reactors. However, many existing HEAs contain cobalt (Co), which is unsuitable for nuclear applications because of the long-term activation issue of Co. Co is also expensive and considered a critical material for other applications. Therefore, it is desired to exclude Co from the composition. a Co-free (Fe0.3Ni0.3Mn0.3Cr0.1)88Ti4Al8 HEA was developed and studied in this work. in contrast to previous Co-free HEAs, this alloy is close to Equi atomic in its composition and promises a more …

Ceramic On-Demand Extrusion (CODE) is a direct ink writing process which allows for the creation of near theoretically dense ceramic components with large cross-sections due to oil-assisted drying. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) colloidal pastes (∼d50 ≲ 1 µm) were used in CODE to produce dense (multi-road infill and ≳ 98% relative density), large continuous volume (> 1 cm3), and high fidelity (nozzle diameters ≲ 1 mm) structural ceramic components. However, many of these printed components underwent significant particle migration after forming. The reason for this particle migration defect was investigated using the coffee-ring effect for dilute solutions and rheological methods for …

Nuclear Reactor Environments Are Extreme in Nature Due to the Combination of Exposure to Corrosive Coolant, Mechanical Stresses, and Neutron Irradiation Damage. This Combination of Environments Can Lead to Irradiation Induced/assisted Precipitation, Segregation, and Embrittlement Coupled with Enhanced Creep and Stress Corrosion Cracking. While Nanostructured Materials Are of Interest in a Variety of Applications Due to their Unique Properties Including High Mechanical Strength, for Nuclear Applications Nanostructured Materials Have the Added Benefit of Irradiation Resistance Due to the High-Volume Density of Sinks for Irradiation-Induced Defects. in This Study, We Show Unique Radiation-Induced Segregation (RIS) Behavior in Nanocrystalline 304 Stainless Steel …

High-entropy (HE) ultra-high temperature ceramics have the chance to pave the way for future applications propelling technology advantages in the fields of energy conversion and extreme environmental shielding. Among others, HE diborides stand out owing to their intrinsic anisotropic layered structure and ability to withstand ultra-high temperatures. Herein, we employed in-situ high-resolution synchrotron diffraction over a plethora of multicomponent compositions, with four to seven transition metals, with the intent of understanding the thermal lattice expansion following different composition or synthesis process. As a result, we were able to control the average thermal expansion (TE) from 1.3 x 10−6 to …

There exists a need to measure optical constants n and k for many materials, especially organic solids in the infrared spectral region, but at present, there are only two established methods for making such measurements: single-angle (SA) reflectance and infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry (IRSE). the former derives the n/k vectors via measurement of the change in the amplitude of light reflected from the sample and then uses the Kramers-Kronig transform, while the latter measures the change in polarization of the reflected light from the sample to derive n/k. Here we make a direct comparison between the n/k vectors derived from SA …

Zirconium carbide ceramics were prepared by carbothermal reduction of ZrO2 and C that were mixed by high-energy ball milling. Powders were milled for times from 0 to 120 min in air. As milling time increased, the surface area of the powders increased, indicating significant particle size reduction. Milled powders were reacted at 1600 °C and then densified by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C, which was sufficient to convert the starting powders to zirconium carbide. Unmilled powders did not reach full density. Milled powders reached full density, but ZrO2 impurities were found for specimens prepared from powders milled …

Accurate measurement of interfacial heat transfer during casting solidification is crucial for optimizing metal solidification processes. The gap between the mold wall and the casting surface plays a significant role in heat transfer and cooling rates. In this study, two innovative fiber-optic sensors are employed to measure real-time mold gaps and thermal profiles during the solidification of A356 aluminum in a permanent mold casting. The experimental setup consists of a specially designed mold system made of unheated, uncoated tool steel, which facilitates easy installation of the fiber-optic sensors. An Extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (EFPI) sensor is utilized to monitor the evolving …
