Synthesis Dibenzyl Terephthalate Through Depolimerization of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) as Alternative of Waste Plastics Recycling. Synthesis dibenzyl terephathalate were done through PET degradation by refluxing in benzyl alcohol at 145oC temperature for 20, 24, and 28 hours in the presence of zinc acetate catalyst. The result of degradation was purified by recristalization in methanol and then melting point (mp), FTIR, 1H NMR spectra, and TLC spot were determined. The melting point of product degradation for 28 hours was 98-99 oC. Dipole Magnetization Effect to Kerosene Characteristics. Investigation of kerosene characteristics has been done by ex-situ dipole magnetization. The results show that magnetization technique can be able to influence kerosene characteristics. Polarity and viscosity of the kerosene are observed by measuring refractive index and viscosity. An hour of 4330 Gauss flux magnetic will increase refractive index from 1.447 to 1.449 and decrease the viscosity from 1.278 to 1.256. Those changing support de-clustering occurrence and polarity increment of kerosene molecule. Gas chromatography and infrared result show that those changing do not alter kerosene structure and composition.

Study of 2D and 3D Optical Beam Induced Voltage Imaging Using Photoresistor Sensor. This article shows a method to study OBIV (optical beam induced voltage) imagerie system, that usually employ a laser scanning microscopy system. The OBIV imagerie system developed use a photoresistor sensor as a sample and simultaneously it can be used for analyzing its inhomogeneity response. Resolution of the system is still low, about 350μm due to high value of incident light diameter. The results inform that photoresistor sensors gave an optimum response if the incident light hits the center of sensible zone.

Micro-Raman (µ-Raman) spectroscopy is used to measure residual stress in two silicon carbide (SiC) poly-types: single-crystal, hexagonally symmetric 6H-SiC, and polycrystalline, cubic 3C-SiC thin films deposited on Si substrates. Both are used in micro-electrical-mechanical systems (MEMS) devices. By employing an incorporated piezoelectric stage with submicron positioning capabilities along with the Raman spectral acquisition, spatial scans are performed to reveal areas in the 6H-SiC MEMS structures that contain residual stress. Shifts in the transverse optical (TO) Stokes peaks of up to 2 cm-1 are correlated to the material strain induced by the MEMS fabrication process through the development of phonon …

This quarterly report provides an update to the last phase of the Modeling, Fabrication, and Optimization of Niobium Cavities in the no-cost extension period. Designing the experimental setup of secondary electron emission was well underway in early summer of 2003 when funding was made available for this portion the study. By March 2004, many of the components of the experimental study reached UNLV with some assembly accomplished. The first secondary electron emission (SEE) measurement was made from the surface of a Faraday cup in September 2004. We report on the Raman spectra of Ti3SiC2 (312), M2AlC(211) (M=Ti, V, Cr, and Nb) and Ti4AlN3 (413), as representative compounds from the family of Mn+1AXn phases. Intense and narrow first-order Raman peaks are observed, and we present an analysis of the spectra based on symmetry considerations and from results of first-principles calculations of phonon frequencies. The agreement between experimental and calculated mode energies is excellent. The identification of the modes enables application of Raman scattering as a diagnostic tool for the detailed study of the structural and physical properties of this family of compounds and their …

Unsteady aerodynamic analysis of Inlet Guide Vane (IGV)/rotor interaction is conducted with a commercial CFD solver, STAR-CD. 12% and 26% IGV axial chord IGV/Rotor spacing configurations were examined for 100% corrected speed at choke, peak efficiency and near stall conditions to investigate bow shock/tip leakage interaction within blade rows. Comparison with IGV surface unsteady pressure experimental data indicates good agreement at the IGV trailing edge across the span for both spacing configurations; therefore, validating the modeling of the high speed, highly loaded transonic compressor. The strongest effect on the tip clearance flow physics was caused by decreasing the axial spacing. …

The science and technology that are fundamental to the concept of composite materials are also the foundation for the construction and function of fuel cells and fuel cell systems. The present paper outlines this relationship in the context of the physics and chemistry that are enabled by the specific selection and arrangement of constituents of the “functional composite” fuel cell. General principles of operation are described, and fundamental issues are defined that must be addressed by the composites community if the fuel cell science and engineering is to advance. One of the key technologies for the deployment of accelerator driven transmutation systems is the accelerator itself. Elliptical superconducting niobium cavities are used to increase the efficiency of the high-power accelerators needed to support the transmutation mission.
One of the major sources of energy loss from a superconducting accelerator cavity is a process known as multiple impacting (or “multipacting”) of electrons. This phenomenon limits the maximum amount of energy and power that the niobium cavity can store. As a result, the maximum power available for accelerating the desired charge, as well as the overall performance of the accelerator is reduced. …

The purpose of the meetings was to coordinate the FY05 research and development effort of the UNLV Research Foundation portion of the Nuclear Hydrogen Initiative among the DOE, national program technical directors and the UNLVRF collaborators. Influence of Connection Placement to the Behavior of Precast Concrete Exterior Beam-Column Joint. This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of connection placement to the behaviour of exterior beamcolumn joint of precast concrete structure under semi cyclic loading. Four half-scale beam-column specimens were investigated. Three beam-columns were jointed through connection that are placed in beam-column joint region and the forth is connected at the plastic hinge potensial region of the beam. Crack patterns, strength, stiffness and ductility of the test specimens have been evaluated. The test result indicated that all beam-column specimens show good ductility behavior.

Optic Properties on AgGaSe2 Polycristal Fabrication. Polycristal AgGaSe2, is compound (I-III-VI2) a semiconductor as basic material for thin film for solar cell. Polycristal was succesfully grown using Bridgmann Method, heated on sequential temperature treatment until 850°C and cooled down slowly until room temperature. Results observed were in the form of ingot (bars) with more or less 3 cm length and 13 mm in diameter. Martensitic Alloy HT-9 has been tested for its evaluation of stress corrosion cracking resistance in neutral and acidic solutions at ambient and elevated temperatures incorporating smooth and notched cylindrical specimens under constant load and slow strain rate (SSR) conditions. C-ring and U-bend specimens have also been tested for stress corrosion cracking evaluation in the acidic solution. The role of hydrogen on the cracking tendency has been evaluated by cathodic applied potential.

This investigation is focused on the evaluation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), localized corrosion, and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) susceptibility of martensitic Alloy EP-823 in neutral and acidic solutions at ambient and elevated temperatures. While no failures were observed in smooth specimens in the neutral solution, failures were noticed in the 90°C acidic solution at constant-load (CL) leading to a threshold stress (O'th) of 102 ksi. The presence of a notch reduced the O'th value to 91 ksi in a similar environment. The ductility (%El and %RA), time-to-failure (TTF), and true failure stress (O'r) were gradually …

The susceptibility of Alloy EP-823 to stress corrosion cracking has been evaluated using smooth and notched cylindrical specimens in neutral and acidic solutions at ambient and elevated temperatures using constant load and slow strain rate testing (SSR) techniques. C-ring and U-bend specimens have also been tested in the acidic solution. The effect of hydrogen on the cracking susceptibility has been evaluated under controlled cathodic potential. UNLV hosted a meeting on NHI Materials and Heat Exchanger Design on Monday, May 17. Paul Pickard (Sandia National Lab) and Bill Corwin (Oak Ridge National Lab) facilitated the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to summarize the hydrogen materials and heat exchanger requirements and priorities for UNLV staff and their collaborators to support the research proposal solicitation for the UNLV Research Foundation HTHX program. Attendance was heavier than anticipated and required a change of venue to accommodate the crowd of over 30.

Ice patterns generated by rapid freeze prototyping or a molding process can be used to make ceramic investment molds for metal castings. Due to the use of ice, the ceramic slurries must be poured around the pattern and cured at sub-freezing temperatures. Success of this process depends greatly on the mold strength after the gelation of the slurries. This paper describes the experimental results of the mold strength after the gelation of the slurries under different compositions. X-Fuorescence spectrometry is classified under two categories – WDXRF (wavelenght – dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer) and EDXRF (energy-dispersive X – ray fluorescence spectrometer). The secondary flow which happens near hub and casing compressors is three dimentional flow separation phenomenon comes from interaction blade boundary layer with casing and hub boundary layers in the compressor. To reduce the level of CO2 content in air, effort on converting CO2 to useful products is required. One of the alternatives includes CO2 fixation to produce biomass using Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg. Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg is applied for production of food supplement. Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg is also easy to handle due to its superior adaptation. Synthesize of emulsion polymer latex for sub-grade CBR improvement in the road construction. Latex polymer for California Bearing Ratio (CBR) enhancement in sub-grade soil of road building has been prepared by emulsion polymerizations technique. The prepared polymer then characterize by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). For application purpose, CBR test was done to the compacted polymer added-soil. The CBR test is done also for both soaked and unsoaked samples. It is found that our latex polymer is better then other imported latex polymer.
