Rational Design Of Flexible And Stretchable Electronics Based On 3d Printing, Yuanhang Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Flexible and stretchable electronics have been considered as the key component for the next generation of flexible devices. There are many approaches to prepare the devices, such as dip coating, spin coating, Mayer bar coating, filtration and transfer, and printing, etc. The effectiveness of these methods has been proven, but some drawbacks cannot be ignored, such as lacking pattern control, labor consuming, requiring complex pretreatment, wasting conductive materials, etc.
In this investigation, we propose to adopt 3D printing technology to design flexible and stretchable electronics. The objective is to rationally design flexible and stretchable sensors, simplify the preparation process, form …
Microscale Transverse Compression Modeling: A Comparative Study Of The Analytical Mac/Gmc Methods To Experimental Results, Emily Zeitunian
Microscale Transverse Compression Modeling: A Comparative Study Of The Analytical Mac/Gmc Methods To Experimental Results, Emily Zeitunian
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Composite materials require a multi-scale approach to fully understand its behavior. At the micro level, material behavior analysis is conducted most often using numerical or analytical approaches. These models, however, require validation from experimental data to ensure material predictions are accurate. This study compares a semi-analytical micromechanical analysis tool, MAC/GMC, to experimental results of in-situ microscale transverse compression testing conducted at AFRL facilities. Effective properties, stress-strain curves, stress and strain fields, and damage predictions are compared with experimental outputs. Both generalized method of cells (GMC) and high-fidelity generalized method of cells (HFGMC) theories implemented within MAC/GMC show results that agree …
A Computational Exploration Of The Scandate Cathode Surface, Shankar Miller-Murthy
A Computational Exploration Of The Scandate Cathode Surface, Shankar Miller-Murthy
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
The exact surface configuration of scandate cathodes has been a point of contention for the materials community for a long time. Without proper understanding of it and the related structures and emission mechanisms, scandate cathodes remain patchy and unreliable emitters. Thus, density functional theory techniques were applied to various potential surface arrangements and found that there are several low-energy surfaces with low work functions that incorporate a scandium interlayer between tungsten and oxygen or otherwise have a scandium-on-tungsten structure. Furthermore, it was discovered that adding a monolayer of scandium directly to a tungsten surface is surprisingly favorable, thermodynamically. While none …

Lateral-Torsional Instability And Biaxial Bending Of Imperfect Frp I-Beams, Jodi Knorowski, Stella B. Bondi, Zia Razzaq
Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents the outcome of a theoretical and experimental study of the behavior of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) I-beams exposed to lateral-torsional instability or when subjected to biaxial bending. Laboratory experiments involved the application of vertical and horizontal static loads to a 4 x 4 x ¼ in. I-beam with various lengths and the resulting deflections were recorded. Governing biaxial flexure and torsion differential equations were modified to account for the presence of initial imperfections and subsequently solved using a central finite-difference scheme. The theoretical predictions of the beam behavior were found to be in good agreement with what …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Adjust-A-Ramp is a portable ramp designed to ensure the safety of consumers and prevention of damage to cars, specifically towards low profile cars. A low-profile vehicle includes any vehicle that has a clearance off the ground of 6.5 inches or less. Advantages of low-profile vehicles include improved handling, better braking, increased fuel efficiency, increased stability, and an overall luxury aesthetic. The reduced tire size increases grip on smooth surfaces with better wheel response, creating a fast, more efficient ride. The simple tire tread patterns and the stiff sidewalls allow for lower rolling resistance which increases fuel economy. The Adjust-A-Ramp can …

Recycled Printer Filament, Charlotte Hyland, Troy D. Molinar
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of recycling PLA filament for 3D printing on its material properties. After examining these effects, PLA and carbon fiber additives were mixed with recycled PLA pellets in different ratios to attempt to regain material properties lost in the recycling process. To complete these findings, an experiment was design and executed.
The research found that tensile strength during multiple iterations of recycling remained mostly unaffected, however, the strain degraded exponentially. In the PLA additive study, high ratios of PLA additive were able to increase the strength and strain properties of the …
Exploring The Effects Of Chip Flexibility On The Behavior Of Standing Seam Diaphragms To Brace Cold Formed Steel Purlins, Michael W. Seek
Exploring The Effects Of Chip Flexibility On The Behavior Of Standing Seam Diaphragms To Brace Cold Formed Steel Purlins, Michael W. Seek
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Cold-formed steel C- and Z-shaped purlins in standing seam roof systems rely on the diaphragm action provided by the panels to restrain lateral movements and thus increase the load carrying capacity the purlins. The clip connection between the purlin and the panel has inherent and sometimes intentional flexibility designed to accommodate thermal deformations. The lateral deformation behavior of standing seam systems supported by Zees is highly nonlinear and this behavior is not well understood. The flexibility has major implications on the transfer of diaphragm forces throughout these systems and simplified models often grossly overpredict the demands on the diaphragm and …

Locally slender open cross-section members are susceptible to significant twisting and high warping torsion stresses. Torsion considerations are complicated by whether it is derived as a first-order effect from loading or a second-order effect from instability. Previous direct torsion experiments on lipped channels have shown significant inelastic reserve in limited cases. The current design for combined bending and torsion interaction has some limitations, including only considering the first yield in torsion and ignoring the cross-section slenderness in torsion. A parametric study is conducted to predict the torsion capacity in locally slender cross-sections. Shell finite element models of lipped Cee and …

Fatigue Damage Quantification And Life Estimation With Provision For Microstructure, Arash Pourbagheri Jirandehi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation provides methodologies for the quantification of different forms of fatigue damage by considering the role of microstructure. The laws of thermodynamics in conjunction with Finite Element Method (FEM) are utilized to devise thermodynamically-base frameworks for the estimation of cyclic damage in polycrystalline metals. Accordingly, a microstructure-sensitive platform for fatigue life estimation is introduced. The proposed framework is assessed for 3D printed metallic alloys at room and elevated temperatures. Further, it is used to analyze the fatigue performance difference between additively manufactured Inconel 718 in three print orientations. This research is of fundamental vital interest because it ensures that …

Novel Photothermal Materials And Thermally Engineered Membranes For Solar Desalination, Sisi Cao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Although 71% of earth surface is covered with water, more than 97% of it is saltwater, and freshwater is limited to only about 2.5%. The freshwater shortage has been exacerbated due to the environmental pollution, increased agriculture needs, socio-economic development, and population growth. Among various desalination technologies, membrane distillation has gained wide attention due to its ability to treat highly saline water utilizing waste heat from industrial processes. However, the implementation of conventional membrane distillation is hindered in the remote regions and disaster-struck communities where the low-grade thermal energy from industrial plants and electricity are not readily available. To address …

Motivated by such demands, this thesis focuses on design, fabrication, characterization of novel flexible electronic devices and integration of individual devices to realize …
Nucleation Studies In Barium Silicate Glasses And Soda-Lime Silicate Glass, Xinsheng Xia
Nucleation Studies In Barium Silicate Glasses And Soda-Lime Silicate Glass, Xinsheng Xia
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Controlling nucleation is key for the manufacture of glasses and glass-ceramics. It has been observed by different researchers in many silicate glasses that at low temperatures the critical work of cluster formation (i.e. the nucleation barrier) slowly rises rather than decreasing with decreasing temperature. However, this experimental observation is in contradiction with nucleation theories. In this dissertation, crystal nucleation was studied in BaO·2SiO2, 5BaO·8SiO2, and Na2O·2CaO·3SiO2 glasses. The main research topics include measurements of the nucleation rate, the structural evolution of the glass, and the low-temperature nucleation behavior. A special focus is given to the low-temperature nucleation anomaly. In total, …
Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized By Nonthermal Plasma For Electrochemical Applications, Qinyi Chen
Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized By Nonthermal Plasma For Electrochemical Applications, Qinyi Chen
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Metal oxide nanocrystals can be synthesized by colloidal processing and gas-phase processing routes. High-quality nanocrystals produced by colloidal routes typically have surface ligands. Transport of electrons and ions among nanocrystals is hindered by surface ligand, and degrades related electrical performance. Gas-phase processing, for example combustion and thermal plasma, can make free-standing nanocrystals. However, nanocrystals produced by combustion method are heavily agglomerated, which further limits the usage of nanoparticles in electrochemical applications. Nonthermal plasma, as an emerging attractive route, has been initially focused on the synthesis of elemental group IV materials, and extended to include the synthesis of multicomponent materials, such …
Phase-Field Modeling Of The Polymer Membrane Formation Process For Micro- And Ultra-Filtration, Michael Rosario Cervellere
Phase-Field Modeling Of The Polymer Membrane Formation Process For Micro- And Ultra-Filtration, Michael Rosario Cervellere
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Porous polymer membrane filters are widely used in separation and filtration process. Micro- and ultra-filtration membranes are commonly used in biopharmaceutical applications such as filtering viruses and separating proteins from a carrier solution. The formation of these membrane filters via phase inversion is a complex and interconnected process where varying casting conditions can have a wide variety of effects on the final membrane morphol- ogy. Tailoring membrane filters for specific performance characteristics is a tedious and time consuming process. The time and length scales of membrane formation make it extremely difficult to experimentally observe membrane formation. Modeling the membrane formation …

Electrochemical Deposition In Energy Storage Devices, Witness Atutala Martin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metals, whether in a solid or soluble ion form, are a vital part of any electrochemical storage system. More so, Li metal is widely considered as the ideal anode because of its low density and low electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode – SHE). However, just like most metals, it does not plate or strip evenly during cycling which can lead to cycling performance issues, short cycling lifespans, and even safety concerns brought about by dendrites that can cause internal short-circuiting within cells. This research focused on investigating the electroplating of metals in both aqueous and non-aqueous …
A Computational Study Of Radiation Damage In Bilayer Silicon-Gold Structures, Cameron Hopper
A Computational Study Of Radiation Damage In Bilayer Silicon-Gold Structures, Cameron Hopper
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Irradiation from sources such as nuclear reactors bombard materials with neutrons and heavy ions. The primary consequence of this irradiation is the displacement of atoms from their atomic structure. As the structure becomes damaged, the mechanical properties can change. Eventually, this can result in a failure due to embrittlement. This type of damage is hard to detect and can result in sudden, unexpected failure. Therefore, focusing on managing the consequences of irradiation has been a heavily researched topic. To manage irradiation, the focus is primarily to manage the voids and interstitials that appear during irradiation. Grain boundaries and amorphous regions …

Metallic foams, or nanoporous (NP) metals as it is widely referred to in literature, with ligament sizes up to a few tens of nm show exceptional mechanical properties such as high strength and stiffness per weight ratio under different loading scenarios due to their high surface area to solid volume ratio. Therefore, they can be utilized in a wide range of applications making them of great interest to researchers. While their elasticity and yield strength have been the subject of several studies, very limited attention was given to the effect of size, strain rate, and temperature on the material plastic …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Detection and quantification of biomolecules within biological fluids and tissues is of fundamental importance to biomedical research and clinical diagnostics. It is impossible to fully characterize complex, non-linear, biochemical systems without being able to accurately and quantitatively determine the component molecules. This problem is ubiquitous across all domains of biomedical research, and it is a major barrier to fully understanding health, ageing, and disease. Such bottlenecks are extremely challenging to be solved, especially for proteins and peptides, which do not have amplification schemes such as polymerase chain reaction for nucleic acids, because relevant concentrations of molecules related to diseases such …
Aerosol Vapor Synthesis Of Organic Processable Pedot Particles And Measuring Electric Conductivity Using A 3d Printed Probe Station, Yang Lu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Conducting polymers are organic semiconductors characterized by conjugated backbones (alternating single-double bonds) that enable mixed ionic-electronic conductivity. Their polymeric nature, tunable band structure and reversible redox capability have demonstrated fundamental advances in the fields ranging from electrochemical energy storage, sensing, to electro/photo catalysis and neuromorphic engineering. Conjugated backbones, the origin of all the unique physical and chemical properties associated with conducting polymers, prevent their solubility due to high lattice energy which hinders processing. Current solution utilizes a long-chain polymer (PSS) as dopants to render conducting polymer water dispersible (PEDOT:PSS). Nonetheless, PSS is highly acidic and hydrophilic limiting applicability with acid-incompatible …

Higher-Order Topolectrical Semimetal Realized Via Synthetic Gauge Fields, Xiang Ni, Andrea Alù
Advanced Science Research Center
Classical bosonic systems may be tailored to support topological order and unidirectional edge transport exploiting gauge fields. Here, we theoretically explore how synthetic gauge fields may be used to induce higher-order topological phases and zero-energy boundary states. We demonstrate these principles in two types of three-dimensional topolectrical circuits with synthetic gauge fields threading through their reduced two-dimensional lattices, leading to a half-quantized quadrupole charge within a region of the momentum space. We theoretically show the emergence of nodal line rings and Weyl points in the bulk dispersion, whose projected surfaces and hinges support surface Fermi arcs and flat hinge Fermi …

The use of non-standard modes of heat treatment increases the density of dislocations in the crystal structure of the α-phase and increases the wear resistance of carbon, low-alloy steels under various friction conditions, which is comparable to the results when heated to a standard temperature (Ac3+30÷50 °C). The preliminary extreme heating temperature is determined. After re-quenching at standard temperature and low tempering, the wear resistance of steels under various types of friction increases by up to 40 % compared to standard quenching.

Mechanical Strength Of Germanium Doped Low Oxygen Concentration Czochralski Silicon And The Effect Of Oxygen On Nitrogen Dissociation In Silicon, Junnan Wu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
During the Czochralski growth of silicon, it is inevitable for oxygen to be incorporated into the silicon crystal from the quartz crucible. Interstitial oxygen improves the mechanical strength of silicon by pinning and locking dislocations, but also generates thermal donors during device processes, shifting the electrical resistivity. For silicon wafers used in radio frequency (RF) applications, it is important to ensure the high resistivity of the substrates for good RF characteristics. Therefore, the oxygen level in these high resistivity silicon wafers is kept very low (< 2.5 × 1017 atoms/cm3) by carefully controlling the Czochralski growth conditions, in order to reduce the thermal donor concentration to an acceptable level. Silicon on insulator (SOI) substrates made from high resistivity wafers have been widely used for RF applications. SOI manufacturing includes multiple high temperature thermal cycles (1000 – 1100 °C), during which the high resistivity wafers are prone to slip and warpage. Therefore, it is technologically important to recover some of the lost mechanical strength due to the lack of oxygen by introducing electrically inactive impurities to suppress the dislocation generation and mobility in silicon. Germanium (Ge) as an isovalent impurity is 4% larger in size and forms a solid solution with silicon in the entire concentration range. Previous works have shown Ge doping at high concentrations above 6 × 1019 atoms/cm3 increased mechanical strength of silicon with high oxygen concentration (~ 1 × 1018 atoms/cm3). In this work, we explore the effect of Ge doping (7 - 9 × 1019 atoms/cm3) on the mechanical strength of low oxygen concentration (< 2 × 1017 atoms/cm3) silicon, where the oxygen associated dislocation locking and pinning are very low. A mechanical bending test was used to study the average dislocation migration velocity and the critical shear stress of dislocations motion at 600 – 750 °C for Ge doped, nitrogen doped, and undoped low oxygen samples, as well as nitrogen doped float-zone and un-doped high oxygen concentration samples. Next, we fabricated SOI substrates using these high resistivity wafers and compared their slip generation rates and the slip-free epitaxial grow temperature windows after the high temperature thermal cycles (> 1000 °C). Our results indicate at lower temperature Ge doesn’t affect the dislocation mobility …
Nanoscale Enhancement Of Photosensitized Radionuclide Stimulated Therapy, Daniel Douglas Lane
Nanoscale Enhancement Of Photosensitized Radionuclide Stimulated Therapy, Daniel Douglas Lane
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) provides efficient tumor killing through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the optical excitation of a photosensitizer (PS). Furthermore, this mechanism is highly immune stimulating, providing systemic tumor immunity with a reduction in metastasis. However, these materials had previously been limited by their dependence upon external light sources, allowing treatment of only laser-accessible malignancy. With the recent development of photosensitized radiation stimulated therapy (PRaST) this depth dependence is broken through co-localization of radionuclides and semiconducting photosensitizers. This dissertation focuses on the enhancement of titanium dioxide (TiO2) based PRaST agents through understanding of TiO2 material parameters …

Incorporating each aspect of engineering incorporated into a senior project is difficult. That is why an RC Baja car is a great senior project for Mechanical Engineering students. The approach that students must take to design, construct, and test the car is to set parameters, and to make overall goals that can be easily measured. These goals include, but not limited to things like a $700 budget and the ability to withstand a 1-foot drop to a flat surface on all four wheels simultaneously. First, the design must meet the specifications and rules that are set previously. This ensures that …
