Studying the magnetic properties and crystal defects of transition metal chalcogenide crystals is of paramount importance for utilizing them for next generation spintronics devices and hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts. Hydrothermally grown transition metal chalcogenide nanocrystals (MoS2, Ru2S3, Rh2S3, Co2S8) were chosen as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction due to their low dimensionality and previous utilization as catalysts for hydrodesulfurization. The relationship between crystal defect sites and catalytic activity must be discerned to maximize the efficiency of hydrogen production during the hydrogen evolution reaction. From September 2012 to May 2015, a phenocam monitored the seaward edge of a protected mangrove forest. Calculated GCC revealed seasonal greening patterns of a mangrove species, Rhizophoa apiculata, and an overall increase in the GCC, suggesting mangrove expansion. In comparing temperature and precipitation effects, it was found that this particular mangrove species had a greening optima at temperatures between 28°C and 28.5°C, and greening and canopy development response lag time of 10 weeks in response to precipitation. Tree saplings were monitored and showed to grow by 50%, mostly during a three month period during the rainy season. The establishment …

The use of a weaponized thermo-nuclear device in exo-atmospheric conditions would be of great impact on the material integrity of orbiting satellite infrastructure. Particular damage would occur to the multi-layered, solar cell components of such satellites. This study highlights the material behavior in riveting operation that includes buckling load analysis using ABAQUS. Finite Element Analysis is used to find the buckling load vs. Displacement results and validated with the results obtained in physical testing of rivet (POP Nut). A mesh sensitivity study is performed using ABAQUS to understand the optimum mesh size for this analysis. An axisymmetric model with contact properties is created and simulated to reduce the simulation time using ABAQUS. The mechanical and a.c. electrical properties of a new varietal of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) incorporating conductive inclusions are presented. Electrical measurements were undertaken over a wide frequency range while curing and when under uniaxial tensile loading to study the influence of ongoing hydration and multiple microcrack formation on the composite electrical impedance. When presented in Nyquist format, the work shows that conductive inclusions reduce the bulk resistance of the composite while enhancing its polarizability, transforming the classic, single-arc bulk response of typical cement-based materials to a two-arc response. This paper examines the abrasion resistance of high early-strength concrete developed for rapid repair of highways and bridge decks. The cement types chosen for this study included ASTM Type III, ASTM Type V, and Calcium Sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements. A cement content of 386 kg/m3 (650 lb/yd3 ) was maintained for all studied concretes. Test samples were tested after 24 hours and 28 days of curing in order to evaluate compressive strength and depth of wear. An experimental method was developed that demonstrated the size effects in forming thin sheet metals, and a finite element model was developed to predict the effects demonstrated by the experiment. A universal testing machine (UTM) was used to form aluminum and copper of varying thicknesses (less than 1mm) into a hemispherical dome. A stereolithography additive manufacturing technology was used to fabricate the punch and die from a UV curing resin. There was agreement between the experimental and numerical models. The concept of low lattice misfit and high-density of nanoscale precipitates obtained through solution treatment was adopted to obtain ultrahigh strength maraging steel without compromising elongation. An "ultrahigh strength-high toughness" combination was successfully obtained in 19Ni3Mo1.5Ti maraging steel with ultimate strength of ~1858 MPa and static toughness of ~110 MJ·m-3. Maraging steel had extremely high density (2.3Ã?1024 m-3) of nanoscale precipitates with minimum lattice misfit of less than 1% at the solutionization temperature of 820 oC. Two kinds of nanoscale precipitates, namely, η-Ni3(Ti,Mo) and B2-Ni(Mo,Fe) contributed to ultrahigh strength. The size of nanoscale precipitates governed the movement of dislocations, cutting …

Commonly used Gruneisen parameter (γ) models only hold accurate in limited regimes making them inapplicable for use over wide temperature-pressure conditions. The accuracy of these analytical models of γ and of the thermal expansion of solids are of particular interest as these are considered proxies for quantifying anharmonicity, which may be a significant contribution to the thermal pressure at high temperatures. Nitride nanocomposite thin films have generated significant attention as a result of their robust mechanical properties, excellent triobology, and good chemical (corrosion) stability. Due to their excellent hardness and high wear resistance NbN coatings have found use in a wide variety of applications such as the coating of cutting tools and to strengthen the surface mechanical properties of superconducting cavities. The mechanical properties of NbN can be further improved through mixing with Si3N4, leading to the formation of a nanocomposite structure. Deformation Correlations And Machine Learning: Microstructural Inference And Crystal Plasticity Predictions, Michail Tzimas

The present thesis makes a connection between spatially resolved strain correlations and material processing history. Such correlations can be used to infer and classify prior deformation history of a sample at various strain levels with the use of Machine Learning approaches. A simple and concrete example of uniaxially compressed crystalline thin films of various sizes, generated by two-dimensional discrete dislocation plasticity simulations is examined. At the nanoscale, thin films exhibit yield-strength size effects with noisy mechanical responses which create an interesting challenge for the application of Machine Learning techniques.
