Wedeven Associates: Finding New Ways To Develop Novel Solutions To Persistent, Intractable Problems, Richard Jonsen Jan 2022

Wedeven Associates: Finding New Ways To Develop Novel Solutions To Persistent, Intractable Problems, Richard Jonsen

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Wedeven Associates is a small tribology research and engineering consulting firm located near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company faced a variety of challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic as did most small businesses in 2020. As the company became fully operational again, Wedeven Associates was approached by a longtime client to solve a tribological problem the client’s engineers had been trying to address for almost 14 years. The catch: Wedeven Associates only had a little over two months to do the work while complying with pandemic-related travel and meeting restrictions. This case tells the story of how the Wedeven Associates team …

Opportunities And Barriers Faced By Early-Career Civil Engineers Enacting Global Responsibility, Shannon Chance, Inês Direito, John Mitchell Jan 2022

Opportunities And Barriers Faced By Early-Career Civil Engineers Enacting Global Responsibility, Shannon Chance, Inês Direito, John Mitchell

Articles

The term ‘global responsibility’ projects a holistic sense of ethics, sustainability, and obligation. To achieve the long-term viability of human life on Earth, civil engineering must be conducted in increasingly responsible ways, and civil engineers must value and enact global responsibility in their work. Interviews conducted with nine civil engineers in London provide insight regarding engineers’ familiarity with the term, how they learned about it, what opportunities and barriers they face, and what might be done by professional and educational institutions to help them practice more responsibly. Results indicate: the term itself is novel but underlying concepts are not; continuing …

College-Wide First Year And Career Mentorship Programs, Ronald S. Harichandran, Nadiye O. Erdil, Stephanie Gillespie

Engineering and Applied Science Education Faculty Publications

The College of Engineering at the University of New Haven began two formal mentorship programs in spring 2020 with the help of a for-profit company named Mentor Collective. The First-Year Mentorship Program is designed for students entering the university and the Career Mentorship Program is designed for juniors and seniors. The programs were sponsored by a generous gift from Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company. This paper focuses particularly on the impact of the First-Year Mentorship Program on the first to second year retention of engineering and computer science students.

Clarity, Organization, Precision, Economy: A Technical Writing Guide For Engineers, David J. Adams, University Of New Haven

Civil Engineering Faculty Book Series

This fourth edition of COPE was sparked by my involvement with PITCH (Project to Integrate Technical Communication Habits) at the Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven. This new edition contains additional material on data displays, as well as some additional material on writing about data—including how to avoid rhetorical shifts that undermine the precision of a technical report.

Agile Research - Getting Beyond The Buzzword, Trupti Narayan Rane Jan 2022

Agile Research - Getting Beyond The Buzzword, Trupti Narayan Rane

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

"Oh yeah, we're an Agile shop, we gave up Waterfall years ago." - product owners, managers, or could be anyone else. You will seldom have a conversation with a product or software development team member without the agile buzzword thrown at you at the drop of a hat. It would not be an oversell to say that Agile software development has been adopted at a large scale across several big and small organizations. Clearly, Agile is an ideology that is working, which made me explore more on its applicability in research. As someone who has been in the Information Technology …

What Makes An Expert? Characterizing Perceptions Of Expertise And Intuition Among Early-Career Engineers, Caroline Bolton Jan 2022

What Makes An Expert? Characterizing Perceptions Of Expertise And Intuition Among Early-Career Engineers, Caroline Bolton

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to characterize if and how practicing engineers’ perceptions of expertise development, decision-making processes, and engineering intuition vary by aspects of identity, specifically gender and career stage. This thesis is built from ongoing work of the Miskioğlu group on the relationship between expertise and intuition in engineering. Intuition is a characteristic of experts used in decision-making, and the importance of experience in the development of expertise is well documented in literature. There is a gap around how intuition relates to experience, prompting the need to compare the perceptions of early career engineers and mid-to-late career engineers. This thesis …

Preparing Engineering Students For The Challenges Of The Sdgs: What Competences Are Required?, Una Beagon, Klara Kövesi, Brad Tabas, Bente Nørgaard, Riitta Lehtinen, Brian Bowe, Christiane Gillet, Claus Monrad Spliid

Articles

Despite the emerging discussions about the growing role of engineers in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is a lack of agreement on which competences should be prioritised to prepare engineering students to resolve future sustainability challenges. This study examined and compared the views of key stakeholders of engineering education (Academics, Employers and Students) using twelve focus groups in Denmark, Finland, France and Ireland. The findings were mapped against competences identified in previous studies to highlight gaps and opportunities for development. The results confirm the strong emphasis on normative, strategic and systems thinking competences in engineering. However, the outcomes …

Project-Based Learning In Non-Traditional Settings In Engineering Education, Mary Foss Jan 2022

Project-Based Learning In Non-Traditional Settings In Engineering Education, Mary Foss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of utilizing the principles of Project-based learning (PJBL) in nontraditional settings in engineering education. There is ample literature related to the usage of PJBL techniques in engineering education but there are also challenges with incorporating PJBL within the curriculum. It is the aim of this dissertation to build upon this understanding of the advantages and limitations of PJBL in engineering education and identify areas within the existing body of knowledge in which more research is needed. This dissertation divides this topic into 4 sub-topics. The first sub-topic explores how PJBL …

A Pilot Course As A Step Towards New Academic Programs In Renewable Energies, Otilia Popescu, Orlando Ayala, Isaac Flory, Jose Fernandez, Vukica Jovanović Jan 2022

A Pilot Course As A Step Towards New Academic Programs In Renewable Energies, Otilia Popescu, Orlando Ayala, Isaac Flory, Jose Fernandez, Vukica Jovanović

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

The challenges arising from climate change have never before in human history been more pressing for solutions. Addressing pollution and the transition to clean energies are essential problems to solve in the upcoming decades. The process of transitioning to renewable energies has started already, with some states leading the process. As the development of industries sees a fast growth, the supply of qualified engineers and technicians to support these industries needs to keep up. At the community college level, some efforts have already started to introduce courses on renewable energies as well as boot camps or certifications to prepare the …
