Gibbs’ Phenomenon, an unusual behavior of functions with sharp jumps, is encountered while applying the Fourier Transform on them. The resulting reconstructions have high frequency oscillations near the jumps making the reconstructions far from being accurate. To get rid of the unwanted oscillations, we used the Lanczos sigma factor to adjust the Fourier series and we came across three cases. Out of the three, two of them failed to give us the right reconstructions because either it was removing the oscillations partially but not entirely or it was completely removing them but smoothing out the jumps a little too much. …

This dissertation presents a flexible and robust offline handwriting recognition system which is tested on the Bangla and Korean scripts. Offline handwriting recognition is one of the most challenging and yet to be solved problems in machine learning. While a few popular scripts (like Latin) have received a lot of attention, many other widely used scripts (like Bangla) have seen very little progress. The purely mechanical or passive prosthesis has some drawbacks such as consumption of high metabolic energy and limitations in mimicking normal dynamics and kinematics of gait pattern. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound images has been used for easier analysing of anatomy related to abnormalities. 3D image reconstruction is required as it helps doctors interpret results and assess any defects quickly. Not only does it improve the accuracy of diagnosis, but it also saves a lot of time. In this thesis, 295 slices of 2D ultrasound images of a foetal are used to do 3D reconstruction using surface rendering, volume rendering, and multiplanar rendering technique. Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is a cutting-edge imaging technique that uses a variation of the traditional streak camera to obtain video at 100 billion frames per second with a single exposure. In order to achieve this level of temporal detail, CUP leverages compressed sensing (CS). Compressed sensing theory states that a compressed representation of an image can be directly acquired using a non-adaptive measurement matrix so long as the encoding matrix follows certain properties such as restrictive isometry and incoherence. This paper describes a method of estimating distance via Time-of-Flight (TOF) measurement using ultrasonic Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals. Using OFDM signals allows the signals and their sub-carriers to remain orthogonal to each other while continuously transmitting. This estimation method is based on the change of phase of a traveling wave as it propagates through a medium (air for ultrasonic signals). By using signals containing multiple tones, the phase change between each frequency component is slightly different. This paper introduces a new time-resolved spectral analysis method based on the Linear Prediction Coding (LPC) method that is particularly suited to the study of the dynamics of low Signal-to-noise Ratio (SNR) signals comprising multiple frequency components. One of the challenges of the time-resolved spectral method is that they are limited by the Heisenberg-Gabor uncertainty principle. Gallium nitride-based field effect transistors (FETs) have opened a path for full-frequency-range class-D audio amplifiers with low distortion and noise, thanks to their ability to switch at much higher frequencies than that of the upper range of human hearing. Compared to traditional silicon-based transistors, GaN-based transistors offer superior efficiencies, particularly at power levels below their maxima. Burst suppression is a clinical term describing a phenomenon in which the electroencephalogram (EEG) of a sedated patient produces behavior that switches between higher frequency and amplitude bursting to lower frequency and lower amplitude suppression. This phenomenon can be observed during general anesthesia, hypothermia, or in an otherwise induced coma state. In a clinical setting, this phenomenon is typically induced by sedation from a drug such as propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol). The work presented in this thesis was aimed at the development of a hardware accelerator for the Digital Image Correlation engine (DICe) and compare two methods of data access, USB and Ethernet. The original DICe software package was created by Sandia National Laboratories and is written in C++. The software runs on any typical workstation PC and performs image correlation on available frame data produced by a camera. EEG is used to acquire neurophysiological signals for application in clinical diagnosis and brain computer interface (BCI). However, in practical settings the EEG signals are often contaminated by signal artifacts known as the biological and environmental artifacts. Self- organizing networks (SONs) can perform self-configuration, self-optimization, and self-healing. Atmospheric compensation of long-wave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral imagery is investigated in this article using set representations learned by a neural network. This approach relies on synthetic at-sensor radiance data derived from collected radiosondes and a diverse database of measured emissivity spectra sampled at a range of surface temperatures. The network loss function relies on LWIR radiative transfer equations to update model parameters. Atmospheric predictions are made on a set of diverse pixels extracted from the scene, without knowledge of blackbody pixels or pixel temperatures. This effort explored design of metasurface antennas and evaluated their suitability for ultra-wideband applications (2 to 18 GHz). Six unit cell types were characterized. Eigenmode simulations produced frequency vs. phase data for the unit cells, from which impedance vs. gap size data was computed. A holographic design equation was used to generate the metasurface antenna designs. The unit cell simulations revealed that the assumption of single mode operation is a constraint for wideband designs. Traditional frame-based technology continues to suffer from motion blur, low dynamic range, speed limitations and high data storage requirements. Event-based sensors offer a potential solution to these challenges. This research centers around a comparative assessment of frame and event-based object detection and tracking. A basic frame-based algorithm is used to compare against two different event-based algorithms. First event-based pseudo-frames were parsed through standard frame-based algorithms and secondly, target tracks were constructed directly from filtered events. The findings show there is significant value in pursuing the technology further.
