Inquisitive Pattern Recognition, Amy L. Magnus Mar 2003

Inquisitive Pattern Recognition, Amy L. Magnus

Theses and Dissertations

The Department of Defense and the Department of the Air Force have funded automatic target recognition for several decades with varied success. The foundation of automatic target recognition is based upon pattern recognition. In this work, we present new pattern recognition concepts specifically in the area of classification and propose new techniques that will allow one to determine when a classifier is being arrogant. Clearly arrogance in classification is an undesirable attribute. A human is being arrogant when their expressed conviction in a decision overstates their actual experience in making similar decisions. Likewise given an input feature vector, we say …

Feature Guided Image Registration Applied To Phase And Wavelet-Base Optic Flow, Kate R. Duffy Mar 2003

Feature Guided Image Registration Applied To Phase And Wavelet-Base Optic Flow, Kate R. Duffy

Theses and Dissertations

Optic Flow algorithms are useful in problems such as computers vision, navigational systems, and robotics. However, current algorithms are computationally expensive or lack the accuracy to be effective compared with traditionally navigation systems. Recently, lower accuracy inertial navigation systems (INS) based on Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology have been proposed to replace more accurate traditional navigation systems.

Fast Compression Of Imagery With High Frequency Content, D. Scott Anderson Mar 2003

Fast Compression Of Imagery With High Frequency Content, D. Scott Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Image compression is an active area due to the many applications involving electronic media. Much research has been focused on image quality versus bit rate and/or algorithm speed. Here, we seek an effective image coder with a weighted constraint on speed. However, the compression must not taint the quality of impulsive features on the image. Moreover, the camera is operated in a mode that creates a dominant fixed pattern noise across the image array, degrading visual quality and disrupting compression performance. We propose a method that efficiently compresses such an image. We begin by characterizing and removing the fixed pattern …

Automatic Target Recognition Classification System Evaluation Methodology, Christopher Brian Bassham Sep 2002

Automatic Target Recognition Classification System Evaluation Methodology, Christopher Brian Bassham

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research makes contributions towards the evaluation of developing Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) technologies through the application of decision analysis (DA) techniques. ATR technology development decisions should rely not only on the measures of performance (MOPs) associated with a given ATR classification system (CS), but also on the expected measures of effectiveness (MOEs). The purpose of this research is to improve the decision-makers in the ATR Technology development. A decision analysis framework that allows decision-makers in the ATR community to synthesize the performance measures, costs, and characteristics of each ATR system with the preferences and values of both the …

Airborne Radar Interference Suppression Using Adaptive Three-Dimensional Techniques, Todd B. Hale Jun 2002

Airborne Radar Interference Suppression Using Adaptive Three-Dimensional Techniques, Todd B. Hale

Theses and Dissertations

This research advances adaptive interference suppression techniques for airborne radar, addressing the problem of target detection within severe interference environments characterized by high ground clutter levels, levels, noise jammer infiltration, and strong discrete interferers. Two-dimensional (2D) Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) concepts are extended into three-dimensions (3D) by casting each major 2D STAP research area into a 3D framework. The work first develops an appropriate 3D data model with provisions for range ambiguous clutter returns. Adaptive 3D development begins with two factored approaches, 3D Factored Time-Space (3D-FTS) and Elevation-Joint Domain Localized (Elev-JDL). The 3D adaptive development continues with optimal techniques, i.e., …

An Analysis Of Mutually Dispersive Brown Symbols For Non-Linear Ambiguity Suppression, Matthew J. Papaphotis

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis significantly advances research towards the implementation of optimal Non-linear Ambiguity Suppression (NLS) waveforms by analyzing the Brown theorem. The Brown theorem is reintroduced with the use of simplified linear algebraic notation. A methodology for Brown symbol design and digitization is provided, and the concept of dispersive gain is introduced. Numerical methods are utilized to design, synthesize, and analyze Brown symbol performance. The theoretical performance in compression and dispersion of Brown symbols is demonstrated and is shown to exhibit significant improvement compared to discrete codes. As a result of this research a process is derived for the design of …

Space Time Adaptive Processing And Clutter Classification Integration And Evaluation, Nathan A. Jensen Mar 2002

Space Time Adaptive Processing And Clutter Classification Integration And Evaluation, Nathan A. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Radar is a fundamental technology in today's military and civilian environment, and continuing development of this technology is of utmost importance to maintaining technological advantages this realm. Current radar technologies suffer from jamming and clutter limitations. STAP is a statistical method to remove this noise, however it is extremely computationally intensive, and presents several real time processing hurdles. Clutter Classification is another method to classify the radar returns that are found according to the best fit statistical distribution that the return follows. This research investigation attempts to use this clutter classification technology to aid in the detection of targets by …

Translation And Rotation Invariant Multiscale Image Registration, Jennifer L. Manfra Mar 2002

Translation And Rotation Invariant Multiscale Image Registration, Jennifer L. Manfra

Theses and Dissertations

The most recent research involved registering images in the presence of translations and rotations using one iteration of the redundant discrete wavelet transform. We extend this work by creating a new multiscale transform to register two images with translation or rotation differences, independent of scale differences between the images. Our two-dimensional multiscale transform uses an innovative combination of lowpass filtering and the continuous wavelet transform to mimic the two-dimensional redundant discrete wavelet transform. This allows us to obtain multiple subbands at various scales while maintaining the desirable properties of the redundant discrete wavelet transform. Whereas the discrete wavelet transform produces …

The Analysis Of Sophisticated Direction Of Arrival Estimation Methods In Passive Coherent Locators, Ahmet Ozcetin Mar 2002

The Analysis Of Sophisticated Direction Of Arrival Estimation Methods In Passive Coherent Locators, Ahmet Ozcetin

Theses and Dissertations

In passive coherent locators (PCL) systems, noise and the precision of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are key issues. This thesis addresses the implementation of sophisticated DOA estimation methods, in particular the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, the conventional beam forming (CBF) algorithm, and the algebraic constant modulus algorithm (ACMA). The goal is to compare the ACMA to the MUSIC, and CBF algorithms for application to PCL. The results and analysis presented here support the use of constant modulus information, where available, as an important addition to DOA estimation. The ACMA offers many simple solutions to noise and separation related …

Ambiguity Function Analysis And Direct-Path Signal Filtering Of The Digital Audio Broadcast (Dab) Waveform For Passive Coherent Location (Pcl), Abdulkadir Guner

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents an ambiguity function analysis of the digital audio broadcast (DAB) waveform and one signal detection approach based on signal space projection techniques that effectively filters the direct-path signal from the receiver target channel. Currently, most Passive Coherent Location (PCL) research efforts are focused and based on frequency modulated (FM) radio broadcasts and analog television (TV) waveforms. One active area of PCL research includes the search for new waveforms of opportunity that can be exploited for PCL applications. As considered for this research, one possible waveform of opportunity is the European digital radio standard DAB. For this research, …

Wavelet Domain Communication System (Wdcs): Packet-Based Wavelet Spectral Estimation And M-Ary Signaling, Marion Jay F. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

A recently proposed Wavelet Domain Communication System (WDCS) using transform domain processing demonstrated excellent interference avoidance capability under adverse environmental conditions. This work extends previous results by: 1) incorporating a wavelet packet decomposition technique, 2) demonstrating M-Ary signaling capability, and 3) providing increased adaptivity over a larger class of interference signals. The newly proposed packet-based WDCS is modeled and its performance characterized using MATLAB®. In addition, the WDCS response to two scenarios simulating Doppler effects and physical separation of transceivers are obtained. The fundamental metric for analysis and performance evaluation is bit error rate (Pb). Relative to …

Determination Of The Possible Locations Of The Receiver On A Passive Coherent Location System, Considering The Effects Of The Terrain And The Atmospheric Conditions, Carlos A. Meier Mar 2002

Determination Of The Possible Locations Of The Receiver On A Passive Coherent Location System, Considering The Effects Of The Terrain And The Atmospheric Conditions, Carlos A. Meier

Theses and Dissertations

It has always been an issue for an armed force, or government, to obtain complete radar coverage over an area of interest. Generally, this objective remains unaccomplished due to geographical, technical, and/or operational reasons (meaning topographic obstacles, transmitted power, extreme isolation, hierarchy of objectives, etc.) The fact of having vast areas of territory beyond radar coverage can be decisive in an armed conflict. With the recent resurgence of bistatic radar theory and applications, now in the form of Passive Coherent Location (PCL) systems, using existing signal sources (TC and Radio Stations) it is possible to decrease the blind zones of …

Statistical Error Analysis Of A Doa Estimator For A Pcl System Using The Cramer-Rao Bound Theorem, Kerim Say Mar 2002

Statistical Error Analysis Of A Doa Estimator For A Pcl System Using The Cramer-Rao Bound Theorem, Kerim Say

Theses and Dissertations

Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation of signals has been a popular research area in Signal Processing. DOA estimation also has a significant role in the object location process of Passive Coherent Location (PCL) systems. PCL systems have been in open literature since 1986 and their applications are not as clearly understood as the DOA estimation problem. However, they are the focus of many current research efforts and show much promise. The purpose of this research is to analyze the DOA estimation errors in a PCL system. The performance of DOA estimators is studied using the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) Theorem. The …

Nonlinear Suppression Of Range Ambiguity In Pulse Doppler Radar, Jon M. Anderson Dec 2001

Nonlinear Suppression Of Range Ambiguity In Pulse Doppler Radar, Jon M. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Coherent pulse train processing is most commonly used in airborne pulse Doppler radar, achieving adequate transmitter/receiver isolation and excellent resolution properties while inherently inducing ambiguities in Doppler and range. First introduced by Palermo in 1962 using two conjugate LFM pulses, the primary nonlinear suppression objective involves reducing range ambiguity, given the waveform is nominally unambiguous in Doppler, by using interpulse and intrapulse coding (pulse compression) to discriminate received ambiguous pulse responses. By introducing a nonlinear operation on compressed (undesired) pulse responses within individual channels, ambiguous energy levels are reduced in channel outputs. This research expands the NLS concept using discrete …

A Model To Predict Diffraction Attenuation Resulting From Signal Propagation Over Terrain In Low Earth Orbit Satellite Systems, Peter R. Pollock Mar 2001

A Model To Predict Diffraction Attenuation Resulting From Signal Propagation Over Terrain In Low Earth Orbit Satellite Systems, Peter R. Pollock

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on multipath communication propagation impairments to the LEOSAT communications channel. Two terrain diffraction models, based on the geometric theory of diffraction (GTD), were developed and applied to the space-to-ground communications channel. These models were used to predict the impact of terrain on the performance of three LEOSAT communication systems with designs based on the Iridium, Globalstar and Orbcomm implementations. The study verified the feasibility of applying models based on the GTD rather than empirical or statistical models, to approximate the effect of propagating signals over terrain. Both models confirm that signal blockage and multipath propagation, due to …

Using Gps As A Reference System To Hit A Moving Target, Daryl J. Burnette Mar 2001

Using Gps As A Reference System To Hit A Moving Target, Daryl J. Burnette

Theses and Dissertations

The Affordable Moving Surface Target Engagement (AMSTE) project attempts to develop affordable solutions to the precise moving target surface target engagement problem. Up to this point, most of the error analysis performed for the AMSTE project has been at the error variance level, generating root-sum-square (RSS) total errors from error budgets consisting of constant error variances. In reality, the level of error for both Global Positioning System (GPS) positioning and radar targeting systems is highly dependent upon the given situation (such as the distance between sensor and target, the altitude differences, etc.) This research generates a more comprehensive model of …

Image Registration Using Redundant Wavelet Transforms, Richard K. Brown Mar 2001

Image Registration Using Redundant Wavelet Transforms, Richard K. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Imagery is collected much faster and in significantly greater quantities today compared to a few years ago. Accurate registration of this imagery is vital for comparing the similarities and differences between multiple images. Since human analysis is tedious and error prone for large data sets, we require an automatic, efficient, robust, and accurate method to register images. Wavelet transforms have proven useful for a variety of signal and image processing tasks, including image registration. In our research, we present a fundamentally new wavelet-based registration algorithm utilizing redundant transforms and a masking process to suppress the adverse effects of noise and …

This research effort focused exclusively on software modifications and hardware validations related to the GP-3 post-processing mode. As modified, tested, and validated, the GP-3's post-processing mode is now fully operational. The GP-3 is capable of transmitting and receiving bandlimited (3.5 MHz) waveforms at X-Band frequencies. System characterization tests included, noise performance and frequency response. System noise performance characterization permitted establishment of the receiver 'noise floor' and enabled determination …

A Low Power Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (Asic) Implementation Of Wavelet Transform/Inverse Transform, Daniel N. Harvala Mar 2001

A Low Power Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (Asic) Implementation Of Wavelet Transform/Inverse Transform, Daniel N. Harvala

Theses and Dissertations

A unique ASIC was designed implementing the Haar Wavelet transform for image compression/decompression. ASIC operations include performing the Haar wavelet transform on a 512 by 512 square pixel image, preparing the image for transmission by quantizing and thresholding the transformed data, and performing the inverse Haar wavelet transform, returning the original image with only minor degradation. The ASIC is based on an existing four-chip FPGA implementation. Implementing the design using a dedicated ASIC enhances the speed, decreases chip count to a single die, and uses significantly less power compared to the FPGA implementation. A reduction of RAM accesses was realized …

An Objective Evaluation Of Four Sar Image Segmentation Algorithms, Jason B. Gregga Mar 2001

An Objective Evaluation Of Four Sar Image Segmentation Algorithms, Jason B. Gregga

Theses and Dissertations

Because of the large number of SAR images the Air Force generates and the dwindling number of available human analysts, automated methods must be developed. A key step towards automated SAR image analysis is image segmentation. There are many segmentation algorithms, but they have not been tested on a common set of images, and there are no standard test methods. This thesis evaluates four SAR image segmentation algorithms by running them on a common set of data and objectively comparing them to each other and to human segmentors. This objective comparison uses a multi-metric a approach with a set of …

Development And Testing Of A Multiple Filter Approach For Precise Dgps Positioning And Carrier-Phase Ambiguity Resolution, Paul E. Henderson Mar 2001

Development And Testing Of A Multiple Filter Approach For Precise Dgps Positioning And Carrier-Phase Ambiguity Resolution, Paul E. Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

The most precise relative positioning obtained using differential GPS depends on accurately determining carrier-phase integer ambiguities. To achieve high precision, many current static and kinematic algorithms use a floating-point solution until enough information becomes available to fix the carrier-phase ambiguities accurately. A mew method is presented that uses a multiple model Kalman filter to resolve the carrier-phase integer ambiguities. This method starts with the floating-point results, yet smoothly and rapidly attains the precision of the correct fixed-integer solution, eliminating the need to decide when to switch from the floating to the fixed-integer solution. This method is based on a theoretically …

Redundant Wavelet-Based Image Restoration Using A Prior Information, Mary K. Marcum Mar 2001

Redundant Wavelet-Based Image Restoration Using A Prior Information, Mary K. Marcum

Theses and Dissertations

Reconnaissance missions and satellites collect hundreds of images loaded with valuable information to be utilized by the Air Force. Intelligence operations must analyze these images to extract the information needed to help commanders make important decisions. No matter how obtained, images of this type are often degraded by noise due to disruptions such as atmospheric disturbances, optical system variations, motion, and large distance from the sensor to the source. This noise must be removed effectively to improve the quality of these images and ensure that the information contained in them can be correctly extracted. The Air Force relies on the …

Several highly effective compression techniques are applied to compress the resulting audio/video signal in an embedded fashion. This wavelet-based compression algorithm incorporates bit plane coding, first difference coding, and Huffman coding. To demonstrate the potential of this audio embedding audio/video compression system, an audio signal …

The Calibration Of Bistatic Radar Cross Section Measurements, Christopher J. Bradley Mar 2001

The Calibration Of Bistatic Radar Cross Section Measurements, Christopher J. Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in signal processing and remote sensing have highlighted the importance of bistatic radar systems for the purposes of environmental monitoring, surveillance, and tracking radar. The calibration of such systems has been problematic-much more so than similar monostatic systems, primarily as a result of the lack of reference objects suitable for calibrating at any given bistatic angle. This research deals with the problems of calibrating full-polarimetric laboratory-environment bistatic radar systems, including the lack of suitable calibration targets and procedures, and operational considerations such as alignment and mounting. Several popular bistatic calibration techniques are classified, evaluated, and comparisons are made …

Effects Of Jamming On Radars, Ahmet Okuyucu Mar 2000

Effects Of Jamming On Radars, Ahmet Okuyucu

Theses and Dissertations

Although jamming of radars has been in vogue for nearly 50 years there appears to be no comprehensive report on the subject matter. The purpose of this research is to fill this gap. The methodology consisted of analysis, simulation, and where feasible experimental demonstrations. Experimental equipment consisted of a digital noise generator whose output was used to modulate a high frequency carrier in various fashions. The modulated output was fed into a very sensitive super-heterodyne receiver whose Intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth could be varied from tens of Hz to mega Hz range. The detected output was displayed on a sampling …

Post-Processing Resolution Enhancement Of Open Skies Photographic Imagery, Daniel E. Sperl Mar 2000

Post-Processing Resolution Enhancement Of Open Skies Photographic Imagery, Daniel E. Sperl

Theses and Dissertations

The Treaty on Opens Skies allows any signatory nation to fly a specifically equipped reconnaissance aircraft anywhere over the territory of any other signatory nation. For photographic images, this treaty allows for a maximum ground resolution of 30 cm. The National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC), which manages implementation of the Open Skies Treaty for the US Air Force, wants to determine if post-processing of the photographic images can improve spatial resolution beyond 30 cm, and if so, determine the improvement achievable. Results presented in this thesis show that standard linear filters (edge and sharpening) do not improve resolution significantly and …

Dual Channel Matched Filtering And Space-Time Adaptive Processing, Scott D. Berger Jun 1999

Dual Channel Matched Filtering And Space-Time Adaptive Processing, Scott D. Berger

Theses and Dissertations

We propose a dual channel matched filtering system that addresses two key challenges in the practical implementation of a single channel matched filtering system: secondary data support and computational cost. We demonstrated that the dual channel system requires half the secondary data to achieve nearly the same signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) as an equivalent single channel system. The key to the dual channel system is the block diagonalization of the interference plus noise correlation matrix with a fixed transformation. We investigated the application of this dual channel concept to the problem of space-time adaptive processing (STAP), referring to the …

Bistatic Radar Cross Section (Rcs) Characterization Of Complex Objects, Robert L. Eigel Jr. Jun 1999

Bistatic Radar Cross Section (Rcs) Characterization Of Complex Objects, Robert L. Eigel Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses some phenomenological aspects of bistatic scattering from a complex object with an emphasis on specular, shadowing, dihedral, and cavity effects. Five targets are investigated for their simplicity and ability to highlight certain scattering phenomena. Direct measurements of scattered electromagnetic energy and simulation data is gathered for a frequency bandwidth of 6-18 GHz. Both ray tracing and scattering center approaches are used to describe the bistatic mechanisms. An appraisal of the effectiveness and utility of the monostatic-to-bistatic equivalence theorems (Kell's and Crispin's) and several commercial scattering prediction codes is also accomplished. Simulation data is generated from two different …

Terrain Backscattering Coefficient Generator, Ricardo Mediavilla Mar 1999
