Reinforcement Learning-Based Resilience And Decision Making In Cyber-Physical Systems, Fisayo Sangoleye
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) transform how humans interact with technology by integrating sensing, computation, networking, and control with physical processes to facilitate smart services and innovative applications in our environments. Recent advances in CPS have led to rapid growth in the amount of information constantly generated by people, systems, and processes. Most of this information, however, is underutilized due to the lack of efficient information utilization and decision-making techniques. Also, the increasing interconnectivity of CPSs presents security risks that, if left unaddressed, could be highly disruptive to systems, processes, and economies. In this dissertation, we present a study and proposal of …

Rebuilding Grid Governance, Joel B. Eisen, Heather E. Payne
Rebuilding Grid Governance, Joel B. Eisen, Heather E. Payne
BYU Law Review
As climate change sharpens the focus on our electricity systems, there is widespread agreement that the institutions that govern our electric grid must change to realize a clean energy future in the timescale necessary. Scholars are actively debating how grid governance needs to change, but in this Article we demonstrate that current proposals are insufficient because they do not contemplate “rebuilding.” This Article defines “rebuilding” as ending entities tasked with grid governance and creating new ones to take their place. We propose what no one else has: an overarching framework for rebuilding any grid governance institutions.
This Article discusses when …
Mitigating Adverse Impacts Of Increased Electric Vehicle Charging On Distribution Transformers, Akansha Jain
Mitigating Adverse Impacts Of Increased Electric Vehicle Charging On Distribution Transformers, Akansha Jain
Theses and Dissertations
There is a growing interest in electric transportation, and the number of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing. The resulting increase in EV charging power demand has an adverse impact on the existing power grids, especially the distribution transformers. The repeated and continued overloading caused by EV charging can significantly reduce their operational life. This dissertation aims to comprehensively study the adverse impacts of EV charging on distribution transformers and provide robust and practical solutions to mitigate it. A typical North American secondary distribution system with different EV penetration levels and four realistic residential EV charging scenarios are used for the …
Design Of High-Power Ultra-High-Speed Permanent Magnet Machine, Md Khurshedul Islam
Design Of High-Power Ultra-High-Speed Permanent Magnet Machine, Md Khurshedul Islam
Theses and Dissertations
The demand for ultra-high-speed machines (UHSM) is rapidly growing in high-tech industries due to their attractive features. A-mechanically-based-antenna (AMEBA) system is another emerging application of UHSM. It enables portable wireless communication in the radio frequency (RF)-denied environment, which was not possible until recently. The AMEBA system requires a high-power (HP) UHSM for its effective communication performance. However, at the expected rotational speed range of 0.5 to 1 million rpm, the power level of UHSM is limited, and no research effort has succeeded to improve the power level of UHSM.
The design of HP-UHSM is highly iterative, and …
Relaxing Dc Capacitor Voltage Of Power Electronic Converters To Enhance Their Stability Margins, Ali Zakerian
Relaxing Dc Capacitor Voltage Of Power Electronic Converters To Enhance Their Stability Margins, Ali Zakerian
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, due to the increasing adoption of distributed energy resource (DER) technologies including battery energy storage (BES) and electric vehicle (EV) systems, bidirectional power converters are becoming more popular. These converters are broadly utilized as interface devices and provide a bidirectional power flow in applications where the primary power supply can both supply and receive energy. A dc capacitor, called the dc-link, is an important component of such bidirectional converters. For a wide range of applications, the converter is required to control the dc-link voltage. Commonly, a proportional-integrating (PI) controller is used by the dc capacitor voltage controller to generate …
Universal Short-Circuit And Open-Circuit Fault Detection For An Inverter, Buck Brown
Universal Short-Circuit And Open-Circuit Fault Detection For An Inverter, Buck Brown
All Theses
Short-circuit and open-circuit faults of an inverter’s power device often lead to catastrophic failure of the entire system if not detected and acted upon within a few microseconds, particularly for emerging wide bandgap (WGB) power semiconductors. While a significant amount of research has been done on the fast and accurate protection and detection of short-circuit faults, there has been less success corresponding to the research on open-circuit faults. Common downfalls include protection and detection that are too application-specific, take longer than a couple of microseconds, and are not cost-efficient. This study proposes a new open-circuit fault protection and detection system …

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications
This paper investigates employing a Halbach PM rotor array to increase torque and power density within coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines. Analytical and 2/3-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) methods are developed to study torque and power capabilities within an example double-rotor, single-stator coreless AFPM machine with a PCB stator. Compared to a surface PM topology of the same mass and volume, employing a Halbach array increases torque density by as much as 30% through increased airgap flux density amplitude. Multiple parametric studies are performed to explore methods of increasing torque and power density while employing Halbach arrays combined …

This paper presents a multi-objective design optimization for a novel direct-drive wind turbine generator. The proposed electric machine topology employs an outer rotor of the reluctance type and a special modular stator including three phase-windings and spoke-type permanent magnets (PMs). Each stator module includes a single coil toroidally wound around the ferromagnetic core. Consecutive stator modules are separated by PMs and include coils belonging to a different phase. An optimization method with three objectives: total power loss, weight, and torque ripple, and with one constraint for a minimum acceptable value for the power factor, is described. The design examples are …

Simulating Dielectric Barrier Plasma Actuators With Varying Geometries, Cass Wiederkehr
Simulating Dielectric Barrier Plasma Actuators With Varying Geometries, Cass Wiederkehr
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The idea of Ionic Wind Propulsion has long been a topic of research for whether or not it can be used as a practical power source for flight. MIT researchers proved in 2018 that a plane with zero moving parts powered by Ionic Wind Propulsion was possible, and sustained flight could work with an internal power supply. However, due to the thin wire electrodes required to generate the ion cloud that made such propulsion possible, large amounts of drag rendered the plane extremely inefficient and impractical. Dielectric Barrier Discharge Devices (DBDs) are being investigated as to whether they can serve …

Multiple Output Power Supply Using Toroidal Transformers For Medium Voltage Active Gate Drivers, Samhitha Venkata Machireddy
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When operating in high power applications, power devices dissipate tens or hundreds of watts of power in the form of heat. The ability of the power devices to withstand power and dissipation of heat across the power devices becomes a prominent requirement in designing the power converter. This challenge demands a power converter design to be more effective and consistent which factors in size, cost, weight, power density and reliability. This study aims to propose a gate driver isolated power supply design that can be used in medium voltage applications (e.g., up to 10 kV) while respecting the principle of …
Stream Processor Development Using Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Asynchronous Design Methodology, Wassim Khalil
Stream Processor Development Using Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Asynchronous Design Methodology, Wassim Khalil
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Decreasing transistor feature size has led to an increase in the number of transistors in integrated circuits (IC), allowing for the implementation of more complex logic. However, such logic also requires more complex clock tree synthesis (CTS) to avoid timing violations as the clock must reach many more gates over larger areas. Thus, timing analysis requires significantly more computing power and designer involvement than in the past. For these reasons, IC designers have been pushed to nix conventional synchronous (SYNC) architecture and explore novel methodologies such as asynchronous, self-timed architecture. This dissertation evaluates the nominal active energy, voltage-scaled active energy, …

A Nonlinear-Model-Based High-Bandwidth Current Sensor Design For Switching Current Measurement Of Wide Bandgap Devices, Xia Du, Liyang Du, Yuxiang Chen, Yuqui Wei, Andrea Stratta, H. Alan Mantooth
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
With the growing adoption of wide bandgap devices in power electronic applications, current sensor design for switching current measurement has become more important. The demands for high accuracy, high bandwidth, low cost, compact size, and galvanic isolation pose significant design challenges. The conventional modeling approach for bandwidth analysis of current transformer sensors assumes that the magnetizing inductance remains constant, which does not always hold true in high-frequency operations. This can result in inaccurate bandwidth estimation and affect the overall performance of the current sensor. To address this limitation, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of nonlinear modeling and bandwidth, considering …

The strategy significantly improves the volumetric power density, as evident by a proposed PCU constructed and tested having 55.6 kW/L, representing an 11.2 % improvement on the Department of Energy’s 2025 goal of 50 kW/L for the same power electronics architecture. The dissertation begins with a custom magnetic design procedure, based on optimization of a predetermined C-core geometrical relationship and custom Litz wire. It accounts for electrical and thermal tradeoffs to produce a magnetic structure to best …
Classification Of Electrical Current Used In Electroplastic Forming, Tyler Grimm
Classification Of Electrical Current Used In Electroplastic Forming, Tyler Grimm
All Dissertations
Electrically assisted manufacturing (EAM) is the direct application of an electric current to a workpiece during manufacturing. This advanced manufacturing process has been shown to produce anomalous effects which extend beyond the current state of modeling of thermal influences. These purported non-thermal effects have collectively been termed electroplastic effects (EPEs).
While there is a distinct difference in results between steady-state (ideal DC) testing and pulsed current testing, the very definition of these two EAM methods has not been well established. A "long" pulse may be considered DC current; a "short" pulse may produce electroplastic effects; and even "steady-state" current shapes …

Power Amplifier Based On Composite Injection-Voltaic Transistors, Nodira Batirdjanovna Alimova
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The problem of high-current radio engineering devices is related to the fact that the use of high-power transistors and other semiconductor devices is limited by such a phenomenon as a secondary breakdown, in which there is a sharp decrease in the voltage on the device with simultaneous internal current lacing, and the device fails. To solve the problem of secondary breakdown, schemes have been proposed that operate stably at reverse voltage values 4-5 times higher than usual and at power dissipation 2-3 times higher than the maximum allowable power for an individual device. The problem is proposed to be solved …

Cobalt/Carbon Composites As Sulfur Hosts For High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Yun-Rui Yang, Huan-Huan Dong, Zhi-Qiang Hao, Xiang-Xi He, Zhuo Yang, Lin Li, Shu-Lei Chou
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the promising energy storage devices because of its high energy density. However, the sulfur cathode suffers from sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics, slow charge transfer, large volume expansion and severe shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides inevitably resulting in low reversible capacity, poor rate performance and short cycle life, limiting its practical applications. Herein, the recent progress of cobalt/carbon composites, including cobalt nanoparticles and cobalt single atoms, as the sulfur host materials in Li-S batteries is overviewed. In general, cobalt plays the role of electrocatalyst, which inhibits the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, accelerates the electrochemical …

Recent Advances Of Functional Electrolyte Additives For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Xiu-Qing Zhang, Shuai Tang, Yong-Zhu Fu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have become one of the most promising next-generation battery systems due to their high energy density and low cost. However, the application of Li-S batteries still faces critical challenges, such as the low conductivities of S and Li2S, shuttle effect of polysulfides and dendrite growth of Li, etc. The optimization of the electrolyte can ameliorate the electrolyte|electrode interphase, conveniently regulating the parasitic reaction and improving the performance of the resultant batteries. The functional additives in electrolytes provide chances to tune the interphase and even the redox mechanism to improve the performance of the batteries. In …
Metals And Alloys As Catalytic Hosts Of Sulfur Cathode For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhen-Yu Wang, Xue-Ping Gao
Metals And Alloys As Catalytic Hosts Of Sulfur Cathode For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhen-Yu Wang, Xue-Ping Gao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur batteries are recognized as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices, owing to the high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh·kg–1. However, their application has been seriously hindered by the sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics of elemental sulfur and discharged products (Li2S2/Li2S), and the notorious “shuttle effect” of soluble intermediate lithium polysulfide species, leading to poor cycle stability, low sulfur utilization and inferior coulombic efficiency. Introducing catalytic hosts into sulfur cathode is an efficient path to propel the conversion of sulfur-contained species, thus preventing the dissolution and loss of active-sulfur …

Ultraviolet-Initiated In-Situ Cross-Linking Of Multifunctional Binder Backbones Enables Robust Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Sha Li, Xiao Zhan, Gu-Lian Wang, Hui-Qun Wang, Wei-Ming Xiong, Li Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries show attractive prospects owing to their high theoretical energy density, but their commercialization still faces such challenges as lithium polysulfides shuttling, severe volume change and considerable polarization. These stubborn issues place higher demands on each component in the battery, such as the development of multifunctional binders with superior mechanical properties. Herein, ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate was firstly introduced into sulfur cathodes, and in-situ cross-linked by ultraviolet (UV) curing combined with traditional polyvinylidene difluoride binder (i.e., forming a binary binder, denoted as c-ETPTA/PVDF) to construct high-loading and durable Li-S batteries. The covalently cross-linked ETPTA framework not only significantly enhances …

A nonlinear stabilizing control scheme based on Lyapunov theory is proposed for a grid- connected hybrid photovoltaic (PV)/ battery/supercapacitor (SC) system. The system dynamics is developed in the stationary reference frame, and the state-space model of the system is derived and used to formulate the Lyapunov function (LF) candidate. The global asymptotic stability of the LF-based controller is discussed in detail. The real-time implementation feasibility of the proposed control scheme is validated through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) studies of a grid- connected hybrid system under solar energy generation and grid load variations. To address the issue of digital computational time that leads …
