A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr.
A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr.
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The need for long-distance High Frequency (HF) communications in the 3-30 MHz frequency range seemed to diminish at the end of the 20th century with the advent of space-based communications and the spread of fiber optic-connected digital networks. Renewed interest in HF has emerged as an enabler for operations in austere locations and for its ability to serve as a redundant link when space-based and terrestrial communication channels fail. Communications system designers can create a “digital twin” system to explore the operational advantages and constraints of the new capability. Existing wireless channel models can adequately simulate communication channel conditions with …

Vector Magneto-Optical Generalized Ellipsometry On Magnetic Slanted Columnar Heterostructured Thin Films, Chad Briley
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Modern material growth techniques allow for nano-engineering highly complex three dimensionally nanostructured materials. These nano-engineered materials possess highly anisotropic physical properties that are significantly different from that of their bulk counterparts. The magnetization properties of nano-engineered materials can be modified through a close range interaction known as magnetic exchange. These materials are referred to as magnetic exchange-coupled materials. Exchange-coupled magnetic materials are composite magnetic materials where the magnetization of one material is influenced by the magnetization state of the neighboring materials.
The author describes the creation of a representative sample set of exchange-coupled nanoengineered magnetic materials. These materials are created …
Deep Learning And Polar Transformation To Achieve A Novel Adaptive Automatic Modulation Classification Framework, Pejman Ghasemzadeh
Deep Learning And Polar Transformation To Achieve A Novel Adaptive Automatic Modulation Classification Framework, Pejman Ghasemzadeh
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is an approach that can be leveraged to identify an observed signal's most likely employed modulation scheme without any a priori knowledge of the intercepted signal. Of the three primary approaches proposed in literature, which are likelihood-based, distribution test-based, and feature-based (FB), the latter is considered to be the most promising approach for real-world implementations due to its favorable computational complexity and classification accuracy. FB AMC is comprised of two stages: feature extraction and labeling. In this thesis, we enhance the FB approach in both stages. In the feature extraction stage, we propose a new architecture …
Amodal Instance Segmentation And Multi-Object Tracking With Deep Pixel Embedding, Yanfeng Liu
Amodal Instance Segmentation And Multi-Object Tracking With Deep Pixel Embedding, Yanfeng Liu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis extends upon the representational output of semantic instance segmentation by explicitly including both visible and occluded parts. A fully convolutional network is trained to produce consistent pixel-level embedding across two layers such that, when clustered, the results convey the full spatial extent and depth ordering of each instance. Results demonstrate that the network can accurately estimate complete masks in the presence of occlusion and outperform leading top-down bounding-box approaches.
The model is further extended to produce consistent pixel-level embeddings across two consecutive image frames from a video to simultaneously perform amodal instance segmentation and multi-object tracking. No post-processing …

The formulation aims to assist distribution system operators in the task of making decisions on energy storage investment, BESSs' operation, and distributed generation penetration's level to minimize electricity costs. The BESSs are required to participate in energy arbitrage and voltage control. In addition, …
Pixel-Level Deep Multi-Dimensional Embeddings For Homogeneous Multiple Object Tracking, Mateusz Mittek
Pixel-Level Deep Multi-Dimensional Embeddings For Homogeneous Multiple Object Tracking, Mateusz Mittek
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The goal of Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) is to locate multiple objects and keep track of their individual identities and trajectories given a sequence of (video) frames. A popular approach to MOT is tracking by detection consisting of two processing components: detection (identification of objects of interest in individual frames) and data association (connecting data from multiple frames). This work addresses the detection component by introducing a method based on semantic instance segmentation, i.e., assigning labels to all visible pixels such that they are unique among different instances. Modern tracking methods often built around Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and additional, …

Cooperative Learning For The Consensus Of Multi-Agent Systems, Qishuai Liu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Due to a lot of attention for the multi-agent system in recent years, the consensus algorithm gained immense popularity for building fault-tolerant systems in system and control theory. Generally, the consensus algorithm drives the swarm of agents to work as a coherent group that can reach an agreement regarding a certain quantity of interest, which depends on the state of all agents themselves. The most common consensus algorithm is the average consensus, the final consensus value of which is equal to the average of the initial values. If we want the agents to find the best area of the particular …

Such communication technologies would aid tasks regarding organization and information dissemination from authorities to the civilians and vice-versa. This necessity is due to protocols and applications to allocate the number of emergency resources per location and …
Analysis Of Local Anti-Islanding Detection Methods For Photovoltaic Generators In Distribution Systems, Milad Kahrobaee
Analysis Of Local Anti-Islanding Detection Methods For Photovoltaic Generators In Distribution Systems, Milad Kahrobaee
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the current decade, technology innovations and cost reduction of inverter-based Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) have led to higher integration of distributed energy storage and photovoltaic (PV) solar power systems. Increasing growth in PV penetration to the distribution system can raise operational and safety concerns especially in case of an unintended islanding.
In general, standards require distributed generators (DGs) to detect islanding from the main grid and cease to energize the local system. Multiple methods have been introduced in the literature to detect these islands reliably and quickly. In order to connect an inverter to distribution system, inverter should pass …

Design And Analysis Of Binary Driven Coherent M-Ary Qam Transmitter For Next Generation Optical Networks, Naji Albakay
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This work presents a design for a binary driven optical square M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmitter for high speed optical networks. The transmitter applies tandem quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulators to eliminate the need for linear broadband amplifiers and high-resolution digital to analog converters (DACs), which are both required by conventional transmitters. The transmitter design could be scaled to any order of square M-ary QAM by simply adding more QPSK modulators in tandem. It also provides a Gray coded symbol constellation, insuring the lowest bit error rate possible during symbol recovery. We also provide the design for the …

Using Low Power 5g Iot Devices Off-Network Utilizing Modified Prose Communication, John Aaron Swarner
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In setups to enable IoT devices, high power radios are required in each of the devices separately. In order to reduce the power requirements for each individual device, a lower power radio could be used in order to reduce the total power requirements and size for the device and increase battery life or reduce power draws for each device. To enable this, a small change removing the application server requirements would be required. A mesh network could be used to enable communication to the main network, either to a tower that is within the range or through a larger relay …

Real-Time Streaming Video And Image Processing On Inexpensive Hardware With Low Latency, Richard L. Gregg
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The use of resource constrained inexpensive hardware places restrictions on the design of streaming video and image processing system performance. In order to achieve acceptable frame-per-second (fps) performance with low latency, it is important to understand the response time requirements that the system needs to meet. For humans to be able to process and react to an image there should not be more than a 100ms delay between the time a camera captures an image and subsequently displays that image to the user.
In order to accomplish this goal, several design considerations need to be taken into account that limit …

Generalized Ellipsometry On Complex Nanostructures And Low-Symmetry Materials, Alyssa Mock
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this thesis, complex anisotropic materials are investigated and characterized by generalized ellipsometry. In recent years, anisotropic materials have gained considerable interest for novel applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, mostly due to unique properties that originate from reduced crystal symmetry. Examples include white solid-state lighting devices which have become ubiquitous just recently, and the emergence of high-power, high-voltage electronic transistors and switches in all-electric vehicles. The incorporation of single crystalline material with low crystal symmetry into novel device structures requires reconsideration of existing optical characterization approaches. Here, the generalized ellipsometry concept is extended to include applications for materials with …
