Subwavelength Engineering Of Silicon Photonic Waveguides, Farhan Bin Tarik
Subwavelength Engineering Of Silicon Photonic Waveguides, Farhan Bin Tarik
All Dissertations
The dissertation demonstrates subwavelength engineering of silicon photonic waveguides in the form of two different structures or avenues: (i) a novel ultra-low mode area v-groove waveguide to enhance light-matter interaction; and (ii) a nanoscale sidewall crystalline grating performed as physical unclonable function to achieve hardware and information security. With the advancement of modern technology and modern supply chain throughout the globe, silicon photonics is set to lead the global semiconductor foundries, thanks to its abundance in nature and a mature and well-established industry. Since, the silicon waveguide is the heart of silicon photonics, it can be considered as the core …
Synthetic Aperture Optical Imaging Interferometric Microscopy With Improved Image Quality, Preyom K. Dey
Synthetic Aperture Optical Imaging Interferometric Microscopy With Improved Image Quality, Preyom K. Dey
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The resolution limit of optical microscopy can be extended by using Imaging Interferometric Microscopy (IIM), which uses a low numerical aperture (NA) objective lens to achieve resolution equivalent to that of a high-NA objective lens with multiple sub-images. Along with the resolution enhancement challenge, IIM often suffers from poor image quality. In this dissertation, several image quality improvement methods are proposed and verified with simulation and experimental results. Next, techniques to extend the resolution limit of IIM to ≤ 100nm using a low-NA objective lens are demonstrated. An experimental technique of using a grating coupler on …
Approaches To Studying Bacterial Biofilms In The Bioeconomy With Nanofabrication Techniques And Engineered Platforms., Michelle Caroline Halsted
Approaches To Studying Bacterial Biofilms In The Bioeconomy With Nanofabrication Techniques And Engineered Platforms., Michelle Caroline Halsted
Doctoral Dissertations
Studies that estimate more than 90% of bacteria subsist in a biofilm state to survive environmental stressors. These biofilms persist on man-made and natural surfaces, and examples of the rich biofilm diversity extends from the roots of bioenergy crops to electroactive biofilms in bioelectrochemical reactors. Efforts to optimize microbial systems in the bioeconomy will benefit from an improved fundamental understanding of bacterial biofilms. An understanding of these microbial systems shows promise to increase crop yields with precision agriculture (e.g. biosynthetic fertilizer, microbial pesticides, and soil remediation) and increase commodity production yields in bioreactors. Yet conventional laboratory methods investigate these micron-scale …
Memristive Nanodevices And Arrays: Scaling And Novel Applications, Shuang Pi
Memristive Nanodevices And Arrays: Scaling And Novel Applications, Shuang Pi
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the challenges for device scaling and novel application of nanoscale memristive devices and device arrays through demonstrating the first working sub-10 nm memristor array, the first ultra-dense atomic scale working memristor array and the first high performance nanoscale radiofrequency switch based on memristive devices. Nanoimprint lithography is used to generate the sub-10 nm cross-point memristor array. The imprint mold with sub-10 nm features is generated by using wet chemical method to shrink the larger features on a master mold. The imprinting, pattern transfer and metallization process are closely monitored to enforce optimal conditions for sub-1 nm critical …
Three-Dimensional Memristor Integrated Circuits And Applications, Peng Lin
Three-Dimensional Memristor Integrated Circuits And Applications, Peng Lin
Doctoral Dissertations
New computing paradigms are highly demanded in the “Big Data” era to efficiently process, store and extract useful information from overwhelmingly rich amount of data. New computing systems based on large scale memristor circuits emerges as a very promising candidate due to its capability to both store and process information, thus eliminating the von Neumann bottleneck in the conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) based computers. As the lateral scaling of the device geometry approaching its physical limit, three-dimensional stacking of multiple device layers becomes necessary to further increase the packing density. Moreover, innovations in the 3D circuits design can …
Terahertz Radiation From Electrically Driven Graphene, Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, And Platinum Nanostructures, Martin M. Muthee
Terahertz Radiation From Electrically Driven Graphene, Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, And Platinum Nanostructures, Martin M. Muthee
Doctoral Dissertations
Terahertz power generation continues to be a subject of great interest owing mainly to the sparsity and diversity of sources. Though there has been remarkable development in sources, ranging from quantum cascade lasers, time domain spectroscopy systems and multiplier sources, there still exists hurdles when it comes to integration and application. While some sources excel in a particular attribute like power, they are severely limited when it comes to on-chip or system integration, for example. Furthermore, tunable bandwidth and power are inversely related. Electrically driven radiation sources are emergent and this thesis presents work in terahertz generation from arrays of …
Nanofabrication Of Metallic Nanostructures And Integration With Light Detection Devices, Liang Huang
Nanofabrication Of Metallic Nanostructures And Integration With Light Detection Devices, Liang Huang
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metallic nanostructures have been investigated with various applications especially for integration with light detection devices. The incident light can be manipulated by those nanostructures to enhance light absorption therefor improve device performance. However, previous studies focused on optical design. The electrical properties of these integrated light detection devices have not been fully considered. The photon generated carriers transport and collection are critical for light detection devices as well. An optimized device platform considering from both the optical and electrical aspects to fully utilize these nanostructures is highly desired for future light detection devices.
