Broadband, Non-Destructive Characterisation Of Pec-Backed Materials Using A Dual-Ridged-Waveguide Probe, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Michael J. Havrilla
Broadband, Non-Destructive Characterisation Of Pec-Backed Materials Using A Dual-Ridged-Waveguide Probe, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Michael J. Havrilla
Faculty Publications
A new probe which utilises a dual-ridged waveguide to provide broadband, non-destructive (ND) material characterisation measurements of a perfect electric conductor (PEC)-backed material is introduced. The new probe possesses a bandwidth similar to existing coaxial probes and is structurally robust like rectangular waveguide probes. The combinations of these two qualities make it especially attractive for ND inspection/evaluation applications in the field. The theoretical development of the dual-ridged-waveguide probe is discussed. A magnetic field integral equation is derived by applying Love’s equivalence theorem and enforcing the continuity of transverse fields at the dual-ridged-waveguide aperture. The magnetic field integral equation is then …

It is reported that wearable electronic devices are to be used extensively in the next generation of sensors for sports and health monitoring. The information obtained from sensors on the human body depends on the biological parameters, the measurement rate and the number of sensors. The choice of the wireless protocol depends on the required data rates and on system configurations. The communication link quality is achieved with narrowband technologies such as Bluetooth or Zigbee, provided that the number of sensors is small and data rates are low. However, real-time measurements using wideband channels may also be necessary. This paper …
Wideband Balun Design With Ferrite Cores, Paul R. Biggins
Wideband Balun Design With Ferrite Cores, Paul R. Biggins
Electrical Engineering
This project explores different balun devices in order to develop a balanced to unbalanced transformer that will operate over a wide bandwidth. The balun must operate from at least 1 MHz (or below) to the highest possible frequency. It must have an insertion loss of less than 1 dB under the ideal case with an imbalance of less than 1 dB and 2.5 degrees. Three balun topologies were tested, each built for a 1:1 impedance transformation ratio. Techniques of measuring each balun topology were investigated including gathering accurate data from a three port device with two port instruments and measuring …
An Eigenvector-Based Test For Local Stationarity Applied To Array Processing, Jorge Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk
An Eigenvector-Based Test For Local Stationarity Applied To Array Processing, Jorge Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In sonar array processing, a challenging problem is the estimation of the data covariance matrix in the presence of moving targets in the water column, since the time interval of data local stationarity is limited. This work describes an eigenvector-based method for proper data segmentation into intervals that exhibit local stationarity, providing data-driven higher bounds for the number of snapshots available for computation of time-varying sample covariance matrices. Application of the test is illustrated with simulated data in a horizontal array for the detection of a quiet source in the presence of a loud interferer.
Non-Linear Electromechanical System Dynamics, Shathiyakkumar Ganapathy Annadurai
Non-Linear Electromechanical System Dynamics, Shathiyakkumar Ganapathy Annadurai
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Electromechanical systems dynamics analysis is approached through nonlinear differential equations and further creating a state space model for the system. There are three modules analyzed and validated, first module consists two magnet coupled with a mass spring damper system as a band-pass system, Low-pass equivalent system and Low-pass equivalent system through perturbation analysis. Initially Band Pass frameworks for the systems are formulated considering the relation between the mechanical forcing and current. Using Mathematical tools such as Hilbert transforms, Low-Pass equivalent of the systems are derived. The state equations of the systems are then used to design a working model in …

Properties Of Multiferroic Bifeo3 From First Principles, Dovran Rahmedov
Properties Of Multiferroic Bifeo3 From First Principles, Dovran Rahmedov
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, a first-principle-based approach is developed to study magnetoelectric effect in multiferoic materials. Such approach has a significant predictive power and might serve as a guide to new experimental works. As we will discuss in the course of this work, it also gives an important insight to the underlying physics behind the experimentally observed phenomena.
We start by applying our method to investigate properties of a generic multiferroic material. We observe how magnetic susceptibility of such materials evolves with temperature and compare this evolution with the characteristic behavior of magnetic susceptibility for pure magnetic systems. Then we focus …

Simulation Of A Magnetron Using Discrete Modulated Current Sources, Sulmer A. Fernández Gutierrez
Simulation Of A Magnetron Using Discrete Modulated Current Sources, Sulmer A. Fernández Gutierrez
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Magnetrons are microwave oscillators and are extensively used for commercial and military applications requiring power levels from the kilowatt to the megawatt range. It has been proposed that the use of gated field emitters with a faceted cathode in place of the conventional thermionic cathode could be used to control the current injection in a magnetron, both temporally and spatially. In this research, this concept is studied using the 2-D particle trajectory simulation Lorentz2E and the 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) code VORPAL. The magnetron studied is a ten cavity, rising sun magnetron, which can be modeled easily using a 2-D simulation. …

Numerical Examination Of The Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Hybrid Acousto-Optic Bragg Cell With Positive Feedback Under Profiled Beam Propagation, Fares S. Almehmadi, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In standard weak interaction theory, acousto-optic Bragg analysis typically assumes that the incident light and sound beams are uniform plane waves. Acousto-optic Bragg diffraction with nonuniform profiled input beams is numerically examined under open loop via a transfer function formalism. Unexpected deviations in the first-order diffracted beam from the standard theory are observed for high values. These deviations are significant because the corresponding closed-loop system is sensitive to input amplitudes and initial conditions, and the overall impact on the dynamical behavior has not been studied previously in standard analyses. To explore the effect of such nonuniform output profiles on …

Memristor-Based Neuron Circuit And Method For Applying Learning Algorithm In Spice, Christopher Yakopcic, R. Hasan, T.M. Taha, M. Mclean, D. Palmer
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The learning of nonlinearly separable functions in cascaded memristor crossbar circuits is described and the feasibility of using them to develop low-power neuromorphic processors is demonstrated. This is the first study evaluating the training of memristor crossbars through SPICE simulations. It is important to capture the alternate current paths and wire resistance inherent in these circuits. The simulations show that neural network learning algorithms are able to train in the presence of alternate current paths and wire resistances. The fact that the approach reduces the area by three times and power by two orders of magnitude compared with the existing …

Numerical Analysis Of First-Order Acousto-Optic Bragg Diffraction Of Profiled Optical Beams Using Open-Loop Transfer Functions, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Fares S. Almehmadi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In standard acousto-optic Bragg analysis, the incident light and sound beams are assumed to be uniform plane waves (with constant profiles) leading to the results based on standard weak interaction theory. As a follow-up to earlier work dealing with nonuniform incident optical beams, we revisit the problem of Bragg diffraction under nonuniform profiles, and include Gaussian, third-order Hermite–Gaussian, and zeroth-order Bessel profiles in our investigation, along with a few others. The first-order diffracted beam is examined (using a transfer function formalism based on angular spectra) under several parametric limits [such as the Klein–Cook parameter Q, the effective profile width, and …

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to investigate the triplet (S = 1) ground state of the neutral oxygen vacancy in bulk rutile TiO2 crystals. This shallow donor consists of an oxygen vacancy with two nearest-neighbor, exchange-coupled 3+ ions located along the [001] direction and equidistant from the vacancy. The spins of the two trapped electrons, one at each 3+ ion, align parallel to give the S = 1 state. These neutral oxygen vacancies are formed near 25 K in as-grown oxidized TiO2 crystals by illuminating with sub-band-gap 442 nm laser light. The angular dependence of the EPR …

Neutral Nitrogen Acceptors In Zno: The 67Zn Hyperfine Interactions, Eric M. Golden, S. M. Evans, Larry E. Halliburton, Nancy C. Giles
Faculty Publications
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to characterize the 67Zn hyperfine interactions associated with neutral nitrogen acceptors in zinc oxide. Data are obtained from an n-type bulk crystal grown by the seeded chemical vapor transport method. Singly ionized nitrogen acceptors (N−) initially present in the crystal are converted to their paramagnetic neutral charge state (N0) during exposure at low temperature to 442 or 633 nm laser light. The EPR signals from these N0 acceptors are best observed near 5 K. Nitrogen substitutes for oxygen ions and has four nearest-neighbor cations. The zinc ion …

Investigation Of Profiled Beam Propagation Through A Turbulent Layer And Temporal Statistics Of Diffracted Output For A Modified Von Karman Phase Screen, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Fathi H.A. Mohamed
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Gaussian beam propagation through a turbulent layer has been studied using a split-step methodology. A modified von Karman spectrum (MVKS) model is used to describe the random behavior of the turbulent media. Accordingly, the beam is alternately propagated (i) through a thin Fresnel layer, and hence subjected to diffraction; and (ii) across a thin modified von Karman phase screen which is generated using the power spectral density (PSD) of the random phase obtained via the corresponding PSD of the medium refractive index for MVKS turbulence.
The random phase screen in the transverse plane is generated from the phase PSD by …

Numerical Inversion And Assessment Of 2d Laplace Transforms Using The Brancik Algorithm And Its Use In 3d Holography, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Le Feng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
An analytic examination of 3D holography under a 90° recording geometry was carried out earlier in which 2D spatial Laplace transforms were introduced in order to develop transfer functions for the scattered outputs under readout [1,2].
Thereby, the resulting reconstructed output was obtained in the 2D Laplace domain whence the spatial information would be found only by performing a 2D Laplace inversion. Laplace inversion in 2D was attempted by testing a prototype function for which the analytic result was known using two known inversion algorithms, viz., the Brancik and the Abate [2]. The results indicated notable differences in the 3D …

Second-Harmonic Double-Resonance Cones In Dispersive Hyperbolic Metamaterials, Domenico De Ceglia, Maria Antonietta Vincenti, Salvatore Campione, Filippo Capolino, Joseph W. Haus, Michael Scalora
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We study the formation of second-harmonic double-resonance cones in hyperbolic metamaterials. An electric dipole on the surface of the structure induces second-harmonic light to propagate into two distinct volume plasmon-polariton channels: a signal that propagates within its own peculiar resonance cone and a phase-locked signal that is trapped under the pump's resonance cone. Metamaterial dispersion and birefringence induce a large angular divergence between the two volume plasmon polaritons, making these structures suitable for subwavelength second- and higher-harmonic imaging microscopy.

Development Of An Ionic Liquid Ferrofluid Electrospray Source And Mode Shape Studies Of A Ferrofluid In A Non-Uniform Magnetic Field, Edmond Joseph Meyer Iv
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
An electrospray source has been developed using a novel new fluid that is both magnetic and conductive. Unlike conventional electrospray sources that required microfabricated structures to support the fluid to be electrosprayed, this new electrospray fluid utilizes the Rosensweig instability to create the structures in the magnetic fluid when an external magnetic field was applied. Application of an external electric field caused these magnetic fluid structures to spray. These fluid based structures were found to spray at a lower onset voltage than was predicted for electrospray sources with solid structures of similar geometry. These fluid based structures were also found …
Cascaded Plasmon Resonances For Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Response, Seyfollah Toroghi
Cascaded Plasmon Resonances For Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Response, Seyfollah Toroghi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The continued development of integrated photonic devices requires low-power, small volume all-optical modulators. The weak nonlinear optical response of conventional optical materials requires the use of high intensities and large interaction volumes in order to achieve significant light modulation, hindering the miniaturization of all-optical switches and the development of lightweight transmission optics with nonlinear optical response. These challenges may be addressed using plasmonic nanostructures due to their unique ability to confine and enhance electric fields in sub-wavelength volumes. The ultrafast nonlinear response of free electrons in such plasmonic structures and the fast thermal nonlinear optical response of metal nanoparticles, as …
Injection-Locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (Vcsels) For Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation, Sharad Bhooplapur
Injection-Locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (Vcsels) For Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation, Sharad Bhooplapur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Complex optical pulse shapes are typically generated from ultrashort laser pulses by manipulating the optical spectrum of the input pulses. This generates complex but periodic time-domain waveforms. Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation (OAWG) builds on the techniques of ultrashort pulse-shaping, with the goal of making non-periodic, truly arbitrary optical waveforms. Some applications of OAWG are coherently controlling chemical reactions on a femtosecond time scale, improving the performance of LADAR systems, high-capacity optical telecommunications and ultra wideband signals processing. In this work, an array of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are used as modulators, by injection-locking each VCSEL to an individual …
Large Area Conformal Infrared Frequency Selective Surfaces, Jeffrey D'Archangel
Large Area Conformal Infrared Frequency Selective Surfaces, Jeffrey D'Archangel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Frequency selective surfaces (FSS) were originally developed for electromagnetic filtering applications at microwave frequencies. Electron-beam lithography has enabled the extension of FSS to infrared frequencies; however, these techniques create sample sizes that are seldom appropriate for real world applications due to the size and rigidity of the substrate. A new method of fabricating large area conformal infrared FSS is introduced, which involves releasing miniature FSS arrays from a substrate for implementation in a coating. A selective etching process is proposed and executed to create FSS particles from crossed-dipole and square-loop FSS arrays. When the fill-factor of the particles in the …

Design And Analysis Of Circularly Polarized Electrically Small Antennas, Jesse R. Ludwig
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
A growing need for efficient wireless communication is prevalent in the world in which we live. From cell phones to television to GPS applications, wireless communications are vital in consumer electronics and military applications. In these applications, a miniaturized antenna is sometimes necessary for reducing overall size of the communication system. For many satellite based communication applications, circular polarization in antennas is needed for efficient communication. In this thesis, the miniaturization technique known as T-top loading is utilized on two novel antenna designs. One design is an electrically small, circularly polarized planar cross dipole and the other design is a …

Reconfigurable Microstrip Antennas With Tunable Radiation Pattern Characteristics, Ahmed Khidre
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reconfigurable beam antenna systems are capable of changing their radiation characteristics in real time, such as beam direction, beam shape, beamwidth, etc. Such antenna system is desired for various wireless applications because of many reasons among them; it helps to enhance signal strength received from an intended target, mitigates interference, and accommodates sudden changes in traffic demand of wireless networks. It might also help to reduce the deployment cost of wireless networks infrastructures. In this dissertation, designs for reconfigurable beam microstrip antennas with tunable radiation characteristics have been proposed. The method to achieve these designs is the reconfigurable parasitic element …
Modification Of Plasmonic Nano Structures' Absorption And Scattering Under Evanescent Wave Illumination Above Optical Waveguides Or With The Presence Of Different Material Nano Scale Atomic Force Microscope Tips, Gazi Mostafa Huda
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
The interaction of an evanescent wave and plasmonic nanostructures are simulated in Finite Element Method. Specifically, the optical absorption cross section (Cabs) of a silver nanoparticle (AgNP) and a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) in the presence of metallic (gold) and dielectric (silicon) atomic force microscope (AFM) probes are numerically calculated in COMSOL. The system was illuminated by a transverse magnetic polarized, total internally reflected (TIR) waves or propagating surface plasmon (SP) wave. Both material nanoscale probes localize and enhance the field between the apex of the tip and the particle. Based on the absorption cross section equation the author …
Broadband Approaches And Beam-Scanning Techniques For Reflectarray Antenna, Yilin Mao
Broadband Approaches And Beam-Scanning Techniques For Reflectarray Antenna, Yilin Mao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reflectarray antennas combine the numerous advantages of reflector antennas and phased array antennas and create a hybrid high-gain antenna with a low-profile, low-mass, easy-fabrication, and diversified radiation performance. However, it still has some inherent drawbacks, such as limited bandwidth and scanning range, which are targeted in this dissertation. At first, the array theory approach for radiation analysis of reflectarray antennas is described and implemented. Numerical results are then presented and compared with reference results to confirm its reliability. As the most critical influential factor to the reflectarray bandwidth, the element bandwidth was studied at first, and the effects of element …
Analysis And Design Of Low Profile Multiband Multifunctional Antenna Arrays, Walker F. Hunsicker
Analysis And Design Of Low Profile Multiband Multifunctional Antenna Arrays, Walker F. Hunsicker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Light-weight phased array antennas for aerospace and mobile applications require utilizing the same antenna aperture to provide multiple functions with dissimilar radiation pattern specifications (e.g., multiband operation for communications and tracking). Multi-functional antennas provide advantages over aggregate antenna clusters by reducing space requirements, and can aid in the optimal placement of all required apertures to provide adequate isolation between channels. Furthermore, the combination of antenna apertures into a comgeometry mitigates co-site installation issues by addressing interference within the integrated radiator design itself as opposed to the extensive analysis which is required to configure multiple radiators in close proximity. The combination …

Chapter 1 shows several finished prototypes of 3D printed electronics as well as newly developed techniques in fabrication. Little is …
Self-Heating Control Of Edge Emitting And Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Yu Zhang
Self-Heating Control Of Edge Emitting And Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers, Yu Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Self-heating leads to temperature rise of laser diode and limits the output power, efficiency and modulation bandwidth due to increased loss and decreased differential gain. The main heat sources in laser diode during continuous wave operation are Joule heating and free carrier absorption loss. To control device self-heating, the epi structure needs to be designed with low electrical resistance and low absorption loss, while the heat flux must spread out of the device efficiently. This dissertation presents the control of self-heating of both edge emitting laser diodes and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs). For the 980nm high power edge …

Particle Manipulation Via Optical Forces And Engineering Soft-Matter Systems With Tunable Nonlinearities., Shima Fardad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the most intriguing properties of light-matter interaction is the ability of an electromagnetic field to exert mechanical forces on polarizable objects. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the fact that light carries momentum, which in turn can be transferred to matter. Mediated by scattering, this interaction usually manifests itself as a “pushing force” in the direction of beam propagation. However, it is possible to judiciously engineer these optical forces, either by tailoring particle polarizability, and/or by structuring the incident light field. As a simple example, a tightly focused laser beam demonstrates strong gradient forces, which may attract …
Frequency Selective Detection Of Infrared Radiation In Uncooled Optical Nano-Antenna Array, Sushrut Modak
Frequency Selective Detection Of Infrared Radiation In Uncooled Optical Nano-Antenna Array, Sushrut Modak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mid-infrared (mid-IR) detection and imaging over atmospheric transparent 3-5 μm and 8-12 μm bands are increasingly becoming important for various space, defense and civilian applications. Various kinds of microbolometers offer uncooled detection of IR radiation. However, broadband absorption of microbolometers makes them less sensitive to spectrally resolved detection of infrared radiation and the fabrication is also very tedious involving multiple complex lithography steps. In this study, we designed an optical nano-antenna array based detector with narrow frequency band of operation. The structure consists of a two-element antenna array comprised of a perforated metallic hole array coupled with an underneath disk …
